One afternoon, I told my father I couldn’t enter the key high school next autumn. My grades were too low.
After hearing what I said, my father then called the headmaster of the school. But there was no change of the decision. You may never know how disappointed I was at that time.
My father was a farmer. He worked hard on a farm but got little harvest. He really wanted me to have a bright future. He advised me to choose another private high school. I had to learn in the private high school! What a shame! And my pride was badly hurt.
One door had closed but another opened. Given a second chance, I worked harder, falling in love with learning. Three years later, I entered a famous university. I’m a famous professor now.
Failure taught me that life is a road with unpredictable (不可预知的) forks and unexpected (意想不到的) tomorrows. To take advantage of them, you can’t let yourself be destroyed by failure, or let others set the limits on your ability to achieve.

The “hottest” tourist city this winter in China is the ice city Harbin in Northeast China.
The capital city of Heilongjiang Province welcomed a 3.04 million visitors during the three-day New Year holiday. Shenzhen is also one of the 10 most popular tourist destinations in the country this holiday. During the three-day holiday, the city attracted 2.37 million tourists. It’s clear that Harbin sets an example in tourism. Harbin’s officials said that the city had prepared for the coming of tourists for over a year.
In an effort to ensure visitors’comfort and joy, the city used a drone (无人机) to hoist (升起) 5-meter-diameter artificial moon. What’s more, small warm houses were built for tourists in the freezing temperatures, particularly those from southern China.
Today’s tourists want meaningful experiences. Harbin sets an example of how to respect tourists, providing them with unforgettable experiences.
In today’s world, social media are helpful to a city’s appeal (吸引力). Harbin’s rise as a popular city owes much to short videos that made “Erbin,” a playful nickname for Harbin, a hot topic across social media platforms.
Video clips of a group of 11 children from Nanning, Guangxi on an educational trip to Harbin, quickly won the hearts of netizen (网民). These kids were called the “little tange-rines” (小砂糖橘) by the netizens.

Do you ever feel like your thoughts are going round in circles One minute, you’re thinking about your homework. The next minute, you’re thinking about your plans for the weekend.
Is it possible for us to slow our thoughts down or even stop them It depends on your understanding of “thinking”, according to Michael Halassa, a researcher at MIT, US. We go through each day in one of two states (状态)—we either realize that we’re thinking or we don’t. Our brains won’t stop thinking completely until we die.
“The brain never actually stops thinking.... Most thoughts are actually in the background without us noticing them and there’s not really a way to turn these things off,” Halassa said.
Human brains can unconsciously process (无意识地处理) about 11 million pieces of information per second (每秒), according to Forbes.
You can compare this to how a computer works. Even when you aren’t using your computer while it’s turned on, it is still doing things “in the background”. Your computer, much like your brain, is “thinking” without stopping, even if you’re not consciously using it. Some researchers have called this “thought-chatter”. It describes the random (胡乱的) thoughts that pop in and out of our minds at different times during the day. Some thought-chatter can be fun, such as daydreaming. Albert Einstein came up with his famous theory of relativity (相对论) while daydreaming at work. But too much thought-chatter can make us feel too worried. Meditation (冥想) can help us clean up some of this thought-chatter.

[1]2024 is the Year of the Dragon on the Chinese lunar calendar. Or should that be the Year of the Loong The question has been argued a lot in China, as some say the two creatures are different in Chinese and Western cultures.
[2]The Chinese dragon is a mythical (神话的) creature that can fly and has the magical power to control wind and (4)① . It’s typically seen as a symbol of power, excellence and good luck and often described as a wise and kind creature. However, the dragon in the Western world is often described as an evil (邪恶的), fire-breathing creature that collects treasure and causes fear among people. It’s usually a symbol of darkness.
[3]According to written records, the Chinese dragon was first translated as “dragon” in The Travels of Marco Polo in 1299. Since it is similar to the Western dragon in some ways—both are huge, for example—“dragon” might be the best word to describe the creature at that time.(4)② it’s far from being able to show all the meanings that the creature carries in Chinese culture.
[4]In recent years, people have (4)③ up with a better translation. The word “long” is similar to the pinyin for the Chinese character “龙”and it is easy for Westerners to pronounce.
[5]No matter which way it is translated, we must note (表明) that the Chinese dragon is a warm and joyful image (形象). It’s very different from the Western dragon.(5) We should always try to explain it clearly so that Westerners won’t get lost in the translation.

Almost two million young workers in the UK have to live with their parents because they cannot buy a house or rent a room. Newspapers in Britain call them the “clipped wing generation” because they are like birds who have had their wings cut. House prices in the UK are now so high that many young people cannot afford to buy one. This means a quarter of young adults have to live with their parents or grandparents. A poll (民意测评) found that 48 percent of the people said the biggest problem was housing costs. Britain has a long history of young people moving away from the family home when they start working. Rising house prices are now making this more and more difficult.
A 32-year-old woman said she has been saving money for over ten years to pay for a new apartment. She said it was very difficult because the more she saves, the more house prices go up. She is worried about the future if she can’t buy her own home. She told reporters why she didn’t want to leave the family home and rent, saying, “If I move out now, the reality is I’ll be stuck paying expensive rents for the rest of my life... The thought that I’m going to be living like a teenager into my late 30s or even 40s is really disheartening (沮丧的).” A charity for homeless people said Britain’s government needed to build more homes and sell them at a price that is low enough for younger people.

Someday, you may no longer need to brush your teeth by hand. Instead, billions of nanoparticles (纳米颗粒) could do all that work for you. The nanoparticles are very tiny, metalic (金属制的) balls. Magnets make them move. A magnet (磁铁) is a piece of iron (铁), often in a horseshoe shape, which can attract iron naturally.
“If you set up a magnet in just the right way,” says Ed Steager, “you can arrange (安排) them into any shape you want.”
Steager is an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania in the USA. HyunKoo is an inventor and dental (牙齿的) researcher who also works there. Together, they found a way to form the nanoparticles into long, skinny bristles (刷毛), a lot like the ones on a toothbrush. But these bristles can change the shape to fit whatever surface they touch. They can even move between teeth, like floss (牙线).
A new way to clean teeth could help out anyone who finds this chore boring, says Koo. But it would be especially life-changing for people with disabilities or illnesses that make it difficult or impossible to hold and move a toothbrush.
The scientists tested the robotic bristles in the lab. The removed gunk from plastic teeth and from human teeth. The scientists reported their invention on June 28, 2022.
The device (设备) isn’t yet ready for people to use. The magnets and nanoparticles will need to fit comfortably and safely inside a person’s mouth. The researchers are working with a company to make their dream come true. But if these inventors can perfect the device, it will do good to a lot of people.
A dental researcher says of the Pennsylvania robotic brush, “It’s very innovative.”

Spring View On war-torn land streams flow and mountains stand;
In spring town grass and weeds are overgrown.
Sad over the years, flowers make us shed tears;
Hating to part, hearing birds breaks our heart.
The beacon fire has gone higher and higher;
Words from home are worth their weight in gold.
I cannot bear to scratch my grey hair;
It grows too thin to hold a light hairpin.
Poet Du Fu (712—770) wrote this poem in springtime, when he caught by An Lushan’s rebel army (叛军) and locked up in Chang’an, the capital city at that time. The poem shows his love for his motherland and how he missed his family. The poet used imagery of flowers and birds to express his feelings, which is seen as classic. The spring flowers and birds were joyful,① ____▲____, in the eyes of the sad poet, they reminded him of the past and made him cry. Flowers came to life again in spring, however, the broken country could not be easily restored (恢复). This shows his care for his country and his people.
②The birds were singing freely, while the poet lost his freedom. He was alone without any relatives or friends. Thus the birds’ singing frightened him. This shows that he missed his family. His depressed (绝望的) feeling got even deeper in the next lines. As the war was going on, it was hard to receive letters from family members. The letters were as valuable as gold.
