3. Height is just one of the thousands of features (特征) that your genes (基因) decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then maybe you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall you're going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don't decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential (潜力). Getting enough sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the right height.
No doubt you're wondering how fast you should grow. There's no perfect or right answer. Kids grow about 2 inches (5 centimetres) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty (when your body starts changing and becoming more grown up).
Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimetres here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you're at now, how you've been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through.
Don't be scared if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a very quick growth during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later – between 7 and 13 for girls, 9 and 15 for boys.
You'll usually begin to notice that you're growing faster about a year after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.
(1) The Chinese for the underlined word in the third paragraph “puberty” is .
A.童年时期 B.婴幼儿时期 C.习惯养成期 D.青春期
(2)If you want to know how fast and how tall you should grow, .
A.you should have enough exercise
B.you can ask doctors for help
C.you should protect the environment
D.you can record your growth during puberty
(3)This passage is mainly about .
A.how the genes work in your body B.when is the time you grow fast
C.why you look like your parents D.how you grow to a certain height
(4) After reading this passage, we can explain ___________.
A.how good it is to be a doctor B.how much sleep we need
C.why genes can't decide everything D.what an unhealthy diet is
(5)Which is NOT mentioned (提及) in the passage
A.Your height most probably depends on (取决于) how tall your parents are.
B.Girls' age for starting puberty is usually earlier than that for boys'.
C.The time showing the first changes of puberty is never noticed.
D.You may be scared sometimes when you grow too fast.

How cool would it be to have a flying robot What's the first thing you would do with it Maybe send it into war, or use it to watch your neighbors secretly Well, this is not just a fantasy anymore. Drones are remote﹣controlled flying robots, and they are getting more popular every day. But is this a good thing for society
The popularity of drones has increased in recent years as technology has improved and got cheaper. A civil drone with a high﹣quality camera and four helicopter propellers now sells online for just a few hundred US dollars. Drones are extremely useful for making videos because their cameras link directly to phones or computers. Nowadays, anyone can get professional﹣looking fly﹣by pictures from different angles.
But could this cause problems Because drones are so affordable, it means that anyone can send a robot flying around the neighborhood. People might be surprised to find a camera flying outside their window. This should be a terrible worry for people who care about their privacy.
Many governments also spend a lot of money on drones, but for very different reasons. The United States uses military drones for spying. Its most powerful drones, however, are Predator drones, which can fly higher than 15, 000 meters at over 300 kilometers per hour. And no, they don't just take pretty videos. A predator drone can hold 360 kilograms worth of bombs, enough to completely break down an enemy camp. The man controlling the drone sits safely away from the action, so it's impossible to know for sure who is getting mon people might be in danger.
Drones are new﹣born inventions with a new technology. People are still discovering their possible uses, and maybe someday you'll come up with a new cool way to use your own remote﹣controlled robot.
4.How does the writer introduce the topic in the first paragraph
A.By telling a story. B.By asking questions.
C.By showing facts. D.By giving an example.

6.Why does the writer use the sentence "And no, they don't just take pretty videos. "
A.To compare military drones with media drones.
B.To suggest what military drones will do in the future.
C.To give an example of what military drones cannot do.
D.To show the same fact between military drones and civil drones.
7.What can be the best title of the passage
A.A Great Research Military Drones
B.A Popular Technology:Video Drones
C.A New Invention:Remote﹣controlled Drones
D.A Useful Product:Remote﹣controlled Flying Robots

Several large companies have begun creating paper bottles to replace glass and plastic ones.
A company called Paboco has been working with many large companies to develop paper bottles. These companies are creating their own bottle designs.
Clearly, one of the biggest challenges is keeping a paper bottle from leaking (渗漏). The inside of the bottle needs a special liner (衬层) to make sure the liquid doesn't leak through. Many companies are lining their bottles with thin plastic.
Though bottle makers may say this liner can be removed and recycled, many recycling programs don't have the right machines to deal with these liners.
A Danish beer company called Carlsberg is working with Paboco on a paper bottle called the "Green Fiber Bottle". Now the bottle uses a plastic liner. In the future the company hopes to use a "bio-plastic (生物塑料)" that will break down naturally over time.
But even without the plastic, paper bottles aren't perfect. Most paper bottles use wood pulp (木浆). That could lead to the loss of forests.
Frugalpac, a company from the United Kingdom, has created bottles made of recycled paper, so no trees need to be cut down. Frugalpac still uses plastic liners, though.
But with so many companies working towards the same goal, we will see more paper bottles on store shelves in the near future.
9.One of the biggest challenges of using paper bottles is _________.
A.how to use few liners
B.how to make perfect liners
C.keeping the plastic bottles from breaking down
D.keeping the paper bottles from leaking
10.What does the underlined word "Frugalpac" refer to
A.A Danish milk company.
B.A Danish beer company.
C.A company from the United States of America.
D.A company from the United Kingdom.
11.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.A company called Paboco has been working to develop paper bottles alone.
B.Many paper bottles have thin plastic inside.
C.It's impossible to remove and recycle the liners of paper bottles.
D.The loss of forests leads to the use of wood pulp in most paper bottles.
12.What's the main idea of this passage
A.Paper bottles are not perfect.
B.Bottles are made of recycled paper.
C.Some companies work to develop paper bottles.
D.Some companies work to develop glass and plastic bottles.

Have you ever thought of attending an underwater party Now your dream can come true at the Florida Underwater Music Festival. It is held in July every year. It takes place at Looe Key Reel (卢港珊瑚礁). Looe Key Reel is part of the only living coral reef in North America.
"This festival is a way to celebrate the coral reef. We are looking for a balance between protection of the reef and public enjoyment, "said Bill Becker, the co-founder. "The more people realize what's down there, the more they're likely to protect it. "
Before the festival, a list of ocean songs have already been chosen. Waterproof(防水音箱)speakers are used during the festival. They are hung from boats floating above the reef. Music is piped underwater through those speakers. In fact, sound travels 4. 3 times faster through water than in the air. That makes the experience so special. People that attend the party jump into the water. Some are dressed up as mermaids, rock stars, or even SpongeBob. Others pretend to play different kinds of musical instruments underwater.
It is said that the sound is not loud, but very clear, and that the music can be felt through the body and not just through the ears.
13.How often is the Florida Underwater Music Festival held

Presentation(展示)skills are important at school and in other areas of life. Some people don't like giving presentations because they don't know what to say or because they get nervous about public speaking. Here's some advice to help you make presentations easier and more enjoyable.
⒈Get organised
The best presentations are well planned and clearly organized. Think about topics(话题)and choose a proper one. In one topic, three or four main ideas will be fine. The beginning of your presentation should be interesting. For example, you can tell a short, funny story to make people laugh.
⒉Use photos or videos
Try to use photos or videos. These things make your performance more exciting and help you remember what you' re going to say. However, you shouldn't use too many. The "star" of your presentation should be you, not your photos or videos.
⒊ Practice before your performance
You need to practice many times before the "big day". Practice saying any unusual words. Then write the main ideas on small cards to help you remember. Practice in front of a mirror and time your presentation. Finally you can record your performance or ask a friend to watch you and then make suggestions for improvements.
⒋Connect with your audience(观众)
Always look at the audience when you speak. Stand up straight, but don't stand still or move around much. Finally, be sure to thank your audience when you finish speaking. It's a simple but good way to end any presentation.
16.How can you interest your listeners at the beginning
A.By listing your ideas. B.By telling a funny story.
C.By standing up straight. D.By saying simple words.
17.Which is the "big day" according to the text
A.The day you prepare videos.
B.The day you get some advice.
C.The day you visit your friends.
D.The day you make a presentation.
18.What is the good way to end your presentation
A.To repeat topics. B.To show thanks.
C.To make suggestions. D.To share main ideas.
19.Which question could best help us find out the writer's purpose
A.Did the writer try to teach us skills
B.Did the writer help us understand ideas
C.Did the writer invite us to attend a course
D.Did the writer ask us to be polite in public

"The world's oceans are slowly getting more acidic," say scientists. The researchers from California report that the change is taking place in response to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
The lowering of the waters' PH value is not great at the moment but could cause a serious threat to current ocean life if it continues, they warn. Ken Caldeira and Michael Wickett, from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, report their concerns in the journal Nature.
Increasing use of oil fuels means more carbon dioxide is going into the air, and most of it will eventually be absorbed by seawater. Once in the water, it reacts to form carbonic acid. Scientists believe that the oceans have already become slightly more acidic over the last century.
These researchers have tried to predict what will happen in the future by combining what we know about the history of the oceans with computer models of climate change. "This level of acidity will get much more extreme in the future if we continue releasing COZ into the atmosphere," said Dr Caldeira. "And we predict the amount of future acidity will exceed(超过) anything we have seen over the last several hundred million years, let alone perhaps after rare disastrous events such as asteroid impacts. "
However, it is not absolutely clear what that means for ocean life. Most organisms live near the surface, where the greatest pH change would be expected to occur, but deep-ocean life forms may be more sensitive to PH changes. Coral reefs and other organisms whose shells contain calcium carbonate(小行星) may be particularly affected if the water's acidity levels keep going up, the team predict. They could find it much more difficult to build these structures in water with a lower PH.
In recent years some people have suggested storing carbon dioxide from power stations in the deep ocean as a way of dealing with global warming. But Dr. Caldeira said that such a strategy should now be re-considered. "Previously, most experts had looked at ocean absorption of carbon dioxide as a good thing—because in releasing CO2 into the atmosphere we warm the planet, and when CO2, is absorbed by the ocean, it reduces the amount of greenhouse warming. "
20.According to Dr. Caldeira, _________.
A.ocean absorption of carbon dioxide is a good thing
B.more oil fuels will be used in the near future
C.scientists may predict climate changes with computer models
D.the future situation of the amount of acidity is extremely serious
21.If the water's acidity level keeps rising, _________.
A.ocean life whose structures contain calcium carbonate may be affected
B.the waters' PH value will become higher and higher
C.organisms living near the surface are more sensitive to pH changes
D.some disastrous events will occur more often than before
22.What does the underlined word "acidic" probably mean
A.污染的 B.酸的 C.复杂的 D.温暖的
23.How did researchers predict what will happen in the future
A.They studied many reports in the journal Nature
B.They tested the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
C.They combine what they know about the history of the oceans with computer models of climate change
D.They thought ocean absorption of carbon dioxide was a good thing
24.The purpose of this passage is to _________.
A.show people the findings of a research team
B.inform people of how acid the ocean is now
C.introduce Dr. Caldeira and his team's research
D.warn people of the higher level of CO2

A lot of animals travel from one place to another. We call this migration.
In Africa, large animals, like elephants and zebras, migrate to find food and water. They usually follow the same ways every year.
A lot of birds migrate to find food and better weather, too. They are usually birds that eat insects. They spend the summer in northern Europe, because there are lots of insects there. In the winter there aren't any insects, so the birds fly south to southern Europe and Africa.
Some insects migrate, too. In North America, millions of monarch butterflies fly south to spend the winter in Mexico, California and Florida, where it's warmer. They travel 50—65 km each day and they travel about 1.125 km.
Some fish migrate to breed(繁殖). Salmon(鲑鱼) can swim over 20,000 km in their life. They are born in rivers in Ireland, Scotland and other places in northern Europe. The young fish swim down the river to the sea and into the Atlantic Ocean. They live in the ocean until they are adults. Then they return to the river where they were born. They lay their eggs in the river and then they usually die. Salmon do this, because their eggs are safer in the river. Other fish can't eat them.
Arctic terns(北极燕鸥) travel the furthest when they migrate. They spend the summer in the Arctic, but when winter comes they fly to the Antarctic, because it's summer there. The next year they fly back to the Arctic again. In one year these small birds travel 36,000 km from one end of the earth to the other and back again.
25.According to the passage, monarch butterflies in North America migrate to ________.
A.find insects B.look for water
C.find better weather D.produce young
26.Adult salmon swim back to the river because ________.
A.they won't be eaten by other big fish
B.they want to lay eggs in a safer place
C.they are getting ready to die there
D.they want to go where they grew up

Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass ball is. When you learn all these about the ball , you really see it well.
With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the differences between two different coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too. You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music They must like to feel the sounds of music.
All children soon learn what “Don' t touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things that we might buy. To see something well, we have to touch it. The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or hard floor. All feel different under your feet.
Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show.
There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body and the air on your skin.

The water on Earth has been moving all the time for billions of years. It travels from ocean to air to land and back to the ocean. This continuous movement is called the water cycle, and it is the reason that earth has the same amount of water today as it did back in the days of the dinosaurs. The water cycle provides people, animals, and plants with life-giving water. Each stage of the water cycle is equally important. Here are some of the stages.
Evaporation is the stage of the water cycle when water moves into the air. Water in oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and streams is in liquid form. The sun's radiation heats the water and causes it to change into vapor. It rises into the atmosphere.Areas that receive more heat from the sun experience more evaporation.
Condensation is the stage of the water cycle that follows evaporation. In this stage, vapor changes back into liquid while it is still in the air. Vapor in the atmosphere moves to different regions of Earth. When vapor moves to cooler regions, it also cools. Cooling causes vapor to change back into liquid. It turns into many tiny water droplets. The water droplets collect, making them visible in the air. Clouds and fog are collections of water droplets that result from condensation. The water droplets can remain in the air as long as they are light enough for air currents to carry them.
Precipitation occurs after condensation. This is the stage of the water cycle when water travels back to Earth's surface. Water droplets in the atmosphere collect in clouds and become heavy. They become so heavy that air currents can no longer carry them. The droplets fall to Earth's surface as rain. If the air is cold, the water droplets may be snowflakes, hail, or sleet. Some of the precipitation soaks into the ground and some of it goes directly back into the same oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and streams from which it had evaporated.
Although the water cycle has kept water usable for billions of years, the fresh water that we depend on is limited. It is necessary that we think about ...

31.How is evaporation similar to condensation
A.Both stages contain rain and clouds.
B.In both stages water changes the form.
C.They are more important than precipitation.
D.In both stages, the ocean plays an important role.

A.Condensation follows the precipitation stage
B.Vapor changes into liquid in the stage evaporation.

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree Animals can't talk, but can they lie with their bodies and behavior Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. A bird called the plover sometimes pretends (假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When an enemy gets close to its nest, the plover pretends to have a broken wing. The enemy follows the "hurt" adult, leaving the baby birds safe.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries (埋) its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays also steal food. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when others are watching them. So they get back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimpanzee will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand, too, the chimpanzees are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee take the winner's hand and start fighting again. When chimpanzees find food, it's natural for them to cry out. Then other chimpanzees come running. But some clever chimpanzees learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimpanzees don't hear them, and they don't need to share the food.

A.Catch the enemy. B.Show their honesty.
C.Pretend to be hurt. D.Feed them food.
41.What will the scrub jay do when it knows others are watching them
A.Bury the food twice. B.Stopping stealing the food.
C.Bury the food as usual. D.Run away immediately.
42.What does the underlined word "sneaky" mean
A.Honest. B.Brave. C.Weak. D.Lying.
43.Why do many animals behave dishonestly
A.Because they want to have fun.
B.Because they need to do that for living on.
C.Because they want to share food.
D.Because they are beaten down.

Squirrels are getting ready for winter. They
are looking for nuts and seeds, digging holes in the ground or finding holes in
trees. That's where they store the food they will need during the coming
months, when the weather is cold and sometimes snowy.
Squirrels
spend a lot of time in trees, which are like restaurants for them. Among their
favorite things to eat are nuts and other parts of trees, like tender buds (花苞).
Squirrels may also eat corn, insects and other
animals. And, as anyone who has a bird knows, squirrels love bird food!
Squirrels stay active all winter, so they need
plenty of food to help keep up their energy. Squirrels tend to bury food
underground, piece by piece. Some squirrels may gather food into piles that
they put at the base of trees or bury underground.
When they need food, squirrels use their
memory and smell to help them find what they buried. Sometimes, you'll even see
them digging through the snow.
Squirrels make nests in trees. Some squirrels
spend much of the winter in underground
tunnels (地道), where it is warmer.
When spring comes, squirrels change their
eating habits to new plant growth, like buds and leaves. Sometimes they forget
to dig up all their buried nuts.
That's
why you'll sometimes find a little tree growing in a place where neither you
nor your family planted it. It must have been the squirrels.

At times we all get angry when we are driving. It might be because we are stuck in a traffic jam or stuck behind a very slow driver. It might be because we think another driver has done something very stupid and dangerous. Whatever the reason, it seems that getting angry in a car is something which happens more and more often and there is now a special term for it "road rage". What do we know about road rage
There are two kinds of road rage: aggressive driving and aggressive reactions to the way other people are driving. Aggressive driving can take different forms:
·Driving much faster than the speed limit
·Increasing your speed very quickly.
·Changing lanes very suddenly and stopping another car.
·Moving into a parking space where another car is trying to park.
There are also different reactions to the way other people are driving. These include:
·Making rude signs at people,
·Shouting at people and hitting somebody.
·Driving into another person's car on purpose.
·Using a weapon such as a baseball bat, or even a gun or a knife.
Road rage is certainly not a joke. There have been accidents of road rage which have led to serious injuries and even death.
Experts think that one reason for road rage is that films show a lot of examples of fast and aggressive driving which seems to be positive. Experts also think that the punishments for dangerous driving are not serious enough. Experience shows that driving problems can be controlled, but it takes a long time. In the UK in the last 30 years, the police have been quite successful in reducing the number of people who drink and drive. They are now working to stop people using mobile phones when they are driving. Let's hope they can have the same success with the road rage.

②Mrs Smith shouted at another driver who was trying to overpass her car.
③Mr Miller drove so carelessly that his car hit an old man who was walking.
④Mr Green drove at 110 km/h while the speed limit is 70 km/h.
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①③④ D.①②①
52.Road rage is so common possibly because ____________.
A.the punishments are not serious enough
B.the drivers are badly drunk on the road
C.the films show good examples to the drivers
D.it won't cause serious injuries or death
53.What can we infer from the passage
A.Aggressive driving are much worse than aggressive reactions.
B.Road rage can be controlled without any punishments for the drivers.
C.The accidents by using mobile phones have been reduced successfully.
D.The police will be able to do a lot to deal with road rage in the future.

Have you ever imagined your simple T-shirt could act as an air conditioner (空调) on those hot summer days Thanks to a
discovery, that possibility is getting closer and the T-shirt may soon be found
among your favorite clothing brands.
Two inventors took a completely new method. They designed a
special textile (纺织品) that can take in body heat and then send out
the energy. This new textile cools both the objects and things around them
through a technology. This means that a T-shirt made of this textile looks like
a normal T-shirt, but actually it is a device
(设备) that works like a mirror.
Although the technology is not new and has been used for years to
design plastic films and special paints, its use in the textile industry for
the good of wearers is very special and exciting. That is because, in the past,
the methods we used to deal with heat through clothes were only the suggestions
on wearing light colors and choosing breathable textiles. But even when these suggestions
can actually help you feel cool, they are simply not enough in the hottest
season. The new textile, however, can reflect all kinds of light, and this can contribute to the cooling
process. So this discovery is a real advance.
Right now, researchers still need to test the new method to know
how effectively (有效) the new textile works while the wearers are
standing or walking, and not directly facing the sky. They also need to test
how well it works when T-shirts are not close to the skin. But it's still a
great success.
The two inventors are now looking out for clothing brands that are
interested in using their textile. One inventor said, "The new material
will increase clothing producing costs by just 10 percent. We can make it with
large production. Everybody can afford a T-shirt made of this textile and the
cost is basically the same as a normal T-shirt's. It can do good to everybody."
55.What can the new textile do
A.Make wearers feel cool. B.Make wearers fashionable.
C.Get wearers' health information. D.Test wearers' body temperatures.
56.What do the underlined words " contribute to " mean in Chinese

57.What are the two inventors doing now
A.Making money by selling the textile.
B.Trying to use the textile in other fields.
C.Trying to find out more secrets of the textile.
D.Looking for clothing brands to use the textile.
