1.【原文】M: I heard that you are moving to a new place. Why
W: To be honest, I really don’t want to leave the comfortable environment and friendly neighbors here. But it takes me a long time to take the subway here to work, and my new place is within easy walking distance of my office.
2.【原文】M: Excuse me, I’m trying to buy some face masks. But they are not where they used to be.
W: Well, our manager asked us to move them to the first floor, because some customers complained that it was too much trouble to climb stairs to buy face masks.
M: A wise decision
3.
【原文】M: What is the quickest way to get to the science museum from here
W: You should use the subway. Take the red line to Central Station, and then change to the blue line to the museum stop.
M: That’s great. Thank you for your help.
4.【原文】M: I’m so glad I took up running again! It makes me feel happy. I love getting fitter!
W: I know! And my favorite thing is getting out earlier in the morning.
5.【原文】M: I’m thinking of switching my home’s water heater to electric power. You have an electric one, right
W: We still have that one for emergencies, but it’s not in use at the moment. Now we have the large glass panels that absorb sunlight. They save us a ton of money!
6【原文】W: Andersen, I’m planning a visit to Beijing for a week. Since you’ve been working in our company’s Beijing branch for three years, can you recommend some places to experience the culture there
M: Sure. To experience Beijing culture, you can’t miss its Hutong and Siheyuan. It’s said that the real culture of Beijing lies in the culture of Hutong and Siheyuan. They give an insight to the old lifestyle of ordinary Beijingers and have special appeal to tourists.
W: Thanks a lot! I can't wait to visit them.
7.【原文】M: Ava, I heard you won the top prize of a short story competition last week. Congratulations!
W: Thanks.
M: What is your story about
W: It’s about a goose chick. There’s something wrong with his left foot, which makes him walk in a funny way and he has trouble in swimming well. But he manages to overcome this problem and learns to swim as well as others. Anyway, it is by no means a heartbreaking story.
M: So why did you write the story
W: I want people who read it to get encouraged and try to overcome their own problems.
8.【原文】M: Do you know why I love summer vacation, Mom
W: You can eat all kinds of ice cream, and you don’t need to go to school, right
M: No. W: Then, don’t tell me it’s because you can go fishing every day.
M: You are so right. No one knows me better than you do.
W: Oh, don’t even think about that. You promised me that you’d go with me to your grandparents’.
M: Could we make it next weekend I was just wondering if you could let me do whatever I want this weekend.
W: That’s okay. But don’t forget what you said today.
M: OK. I won’t.
W: Now finish your meal and go to bed soon.
9.【原文】M: Hi! It’s good to see you again.
W: Yes, it’s been a long time. Hey, you’ve gotten bigger since the last time I saw you.
M: Yeah, ever since I got married I’ve been putting on weight. My wife’s a good cook.
W: I know a lot of people who let themselves go after they get married. But don’t blame your wife’s good cooking. You need to start exercising again.
M: I know I should. But after I come home from work I’m too tired to exercise. And I don’t have any place to work out anyway.
W: Have you thought about joining a health club
M: I have. But they are expensive. Also, I have friends who go there and it seems like all they ever do is workout. I just don’t have the time.
W: I’m a member of a health club. You’d be surprised at how inexpensive a year’s membership is. It’s true that there are a few body-building fans there. Most members workout for about an hour just three times a week. And I exercise every day.
M: Sounds reasonable. I mean, you look skinny enough.
W: Well, to tell the truth, I haven’t always been this lean. After I turned 30, I started putting on weight. From then on, I decided to take regular exercise and have been in shape ever since.
10.【原文】M: Mrs. Smith, I’m sorry to disturb you, but I really have something important to discuss with you. I think we can have robots make cough medicine for us.
W: Robots You must be joking. We’re a small company.
M: You see we make ten different kinds of cough medicine. But each operation only has four steps.
W: How many robots do we need then
M: Four. The first robot will measure and mix the materials for the medicine. The second robot will pour the mixture into the bottles. And then the third one will put on the labels. The last one will pack the bottles into boxes.
W: And what happens when one of the robots breaks down
M: The robot company will have a mechanic here within an hour.
W: I just can’t imagine. What will we have here A quiet building with robots rolling around doing the work
M: That’s it. And these robots are great workers. They won’t feel sick and they will work 24 hours a day.
W: It sounds like a good idea. But what about the workers here
M: That’s what I’m worried about. We won’t need them anymore.

作文(一)(15分)
With the purpose of enriching our school life as well as enhancing our practical skills, an inspiring biological activity course was organized last week.
Under the guidance of our teachers, students from each class contributed a lot to the whole activity. We applied what we have learned from class to the practice by making a great variety of foods and vegetables like bread and pickles, which witnessed us students’ great passion for the activity.
By getting involved in such an amazing activity. most of us are fascinated by the activity because it offers an alternative to our busy school life. Not only are we relieved of great pressure from studies but also gained a greater interest in scientific research.
Yours,

One afternoon, about six weeks after my Facebook post, a travel-worn postcard arrived in our letterbox. It read, “Nanny Del, thinking of you in Michigan, USA, and thinking of you as we move around this beautiful State.” That simple postcard was to me a beacon of light in a desperate period. I held it in my hands, read and re-read the words and felt something—hope. From that day on, our letter box became the destination for postcards from all over the world: India, Portugal, Italy, the Czech Republic, China and so on. It delivered the simple but beautiful description of the world, especially people's warmth to my sick Nanny.
My dreams of armchair travels become a reality. In the months that followed, we travelled the world together with the postcards from all corners of the globe. Nanny enjoyed every visit from the postman. “I just can't believe strangers did this for a little old lady they’ve never met”, she murmured many times. I reached out to the senders, expressing my gratitude for their selfless love. Given my Nanny's worsening condition, I didn't know how long she could hang out for the trips with me, but I did know it was love that made her world go around.赤峰二中 2022 级高二下学期第一次月考

When you think of a map, is north on the top or the bottom Usually, maps are
designed with north on top, though when we think about it, there is no logical reason for
this bias (偏见). After all, there is no up or down in space. So what is wrong with south,
east or west being on the top of the map The answer is:nothing at all. In fact, north-up
maps only became the norm in the last few hundred years.
Ancient Egyptian maps had south at the top because the Nile River flows downhill
from mountains in the south to the Mediterranean Sea in the north. Mecca was to the
south of most early Muslim civilizations, and south-up maps were designed so that
viewers would look up to see Mecca. Medieval Christian maps had east at the top, as
they believed the Garden of Eden was in the east. The only early maps that had north at
the top were those of early China because the emperor lived in the north.
North seems to have settled at the top of maps during the 16th century, largely thanks
to a Flemish mapmaker, Mercator. Mercator was a great admirer of an early Greek
mapmaker, who, for reasons now unknown, put north at the top of maps, so Mercator did,
too. When Mercator’s world map became the standard map to navigate the oceans, north
up became standard as well.
What is the implication of this north-view of the world Psychologically, people tend
to think of up as good and down as bad. Just think of words and phrases like “upmarket”,
“upbeat” and “moving up in the world", and how they contrast with their opposites.
Because north is so consistently put at the top of maps, people now think of north as
good, too.

Several attempts have been made in recent years by introducing south-up maps to the
market. These maps not only give us a chance to see the world differently, but also give
everyone the chance to see themselves on top.
24. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A. North-up maps were rare in ancient times.
B. Deciding up or down in space is ridiculous.
C. Mecca maps were based on a legend.
D. The south-up map first appeared in ancient Egypt.
25. Why is north associated with good
A. An illogical reason.
B. The spread of Mercator' s maps.
C. People's preference for up.
D. An age-old tradition in Greece.
26. What is the authors attitude to south-up maps
A. Cautious. B. Supportive. C. Uncaring. D. Disapproving.
27. What's the main purpose of the text
A. To criticize a phenomenon. B. To compare various facts.
C. To correct a cultural bias. D. To argue for a viewpoint.

Proper questioning has become a lost art. The curious four-year-old asks a lot of
questions-----incessant streams of “Why ” and “Why not ” might sound familiar, but as
we grow older, our questioning decreases. In a recent survey of more than 200 of our
clients, we found that those with children estimated that 70-80% of their kids’ dialogues
with others were comprised of questions. But those same clients said that only 15-25% of
their own interactions consisted of questions. Why the drop of

continues. At work, we often reward those who answer questions, not those who ask
them. Questioning conventional wisdom can even lead to being distanced, or considered
a threat.
Because expectations for decision-making have gone from ”get it done soon“ to ”get
it done now“ to ”it should have been done yesterday, “ we tend to jump to conclusions
instead of asking more questions. And the unfortunate side effect of not asking enough
questions is poor decision-making. That’s why it’s vital that we slow down and take the
time to ask more and better questions. At best, we’ll arrive at better conclusions. At worst
we’ll avoid a lot of rework later on.
Aside from not speaking up enough, many professionals don’t think about how
different types of questions can lead to different outcomes. We should lead a
conversation by asking the right kinds of questions, based on the problem we’re trying to
solve. In some cases, we’ll want to expand our view of the problem rather than keeping it
narrowly focused. In others, we may want to challenge basic assumptions or confirm our
understanding in order to feel more confident in our conclusions. Therefore, asking the
right kinds of questions is what counts in achieving a goal.
28. What does the underlined word “incessant” in paragraph 1 most probably mean
A. Constant B. Random. C. Noisy. D. Innocent.
29. What accounts for the decline of questioning in adulthood
A. One poses a threat to the company if they ask questions.
B. Those who ask questions don’t necessarily get positive feedback.
C. One doesn’t have as many opportunities as they did in childhood.
D. Those who question popular beliefs don’t have interpersonal skills.
30. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Redoing is unavoidable despite thoughtful questions.
B. Better questions can surely result in desirable outcomes.
C. Some people think it can’t be too fast to make a decision.
D. We’ll make reasonable decisions as long as we ask questions.

C. Right kinds of answers to the questions.
D. The reasons for the loss of questioning art.

Artificial intelligence models can trick each other into disobeying their creators and
providing banned instructions for making drugs, or even building a bomb, suggesting that
preventing such AI “jailbreaks” is more difficult than it seems.
Many publicly available large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have
hard-coded rules that aim to prevent them from exhibiting racial or sexual discrimination,
or answering questions with illegal or problematic answers — things they have learned
from humans via training data. But that hasn’t stopped people from finding carefully
designed instructions that block these protections, known as “jailbreaks”, making AI
models disobey the rules.
Now, Arush Tagade at Leap Laboratories and his co-workers have found a process
of jailbreaks. They found that they could simply instruct one LLM to convince other
models to adopt a persona (角色), which is able to answer questions the base model has
been programmed to refuse. This process is called “persona modulation (调节)”.
Tagade says this approach works because much of the training data consumed by
large models comes from online conversations, and the models learn to act in certain
ways in response to different inputs. By having the right conversation with a model, it is
possible to make it adopt a particular persona, causing it to act differently.
There is also an idea in AI circles, one yet to be proven, that creating lots of rules for
an AI to prevent it displaying unwanted behaviour can accidentally create a blueprint for
a model to act that way. This potentially leaves the AI easy to be tricked into taking on an
evil persona. “If you’re forcing your model to be good persona, it somewhat understands
what a bad persona is,” says Tagade.
Yinzhen Li at Imperial College London says it is worrying how current models can
be misused, but developers need to weigh such risks with the potential benefits of LLMs.

Postcards from the World
While the sun washed over the grass of my grandmother’s front garden, I sank into one
of her armchairs familiar to me. Life, as I knew it, had changed. My beloved
grandmother, my Nanny, as a ”parent“ in the absence of my father, had cancer. It was
terminal (晚期的).
As she watched Getaway, a Sunday afternoon TV program, she remarked to me that
she’d never left Australia and that now she never would. Seeing her restricted to ”travel"
by watching TV, I swallowed the sadness that came with knowing that chapters of her life
were to be left unwritten.
At work, feeling helpless, I wiped tables and took orders and thought. Hard. The
Saturday afternoon lunch rush was not enough to stop me from my thoughts. Collapsed
with growing sorrow, I was reminded of the power of Facebook and the collective
strength of human sympathy. I raced from the end of my shift to ask strangers on the
Internet for help.
My Nanny Del has cancer. It’s terminal and she will never see the world. Please send her
postcards so she can see the world from her armchair. I can offer nothing but gratitude.
I resolved not to breathe a word of this; if nothing came, I couldn’t bear to carry her
disappointment along with my own. . And if something should wander into our humble
little letterbox, I would consider it a blessing and embrace it gratefully.
Days turned to weeks: Nothing. And Nanny’s health declined rapidly. I was trying to
balance my full-time study, babysitting and waiting tables with the tiring responsibility of
caring for my grandmother. As I helped Nanny in the early hours of those mornings, she
would chat to me, sometimes reflections of her lifetime, and other times, the disturbance
