Krakatau Volcano (喀拉喀托火山)is on a small island in Indonesia. It had been peaceful for about 200 years before it erupted (爆发)in 1883.
The first signs of the activity of the volcano appeared in May 1883,when fire and smoke could be seen at the top of the mountain.Great noise could be heard even in Jakarta,a hundred miles away.Later the activity grew much greater. The peak (山顶)was covered with smoke and fire;the smoke at one time was seventeen miles high in the air.The lava—soft and hot rock—shot up into the air and rolled down the sides of the mountain.
The mouth of the volcano was not at the peak of the mountain but on its side, close to the sea.As it grew bigger and bigger with the eruption, the sea water got into it.When the sea water reached the lava inside the volcano,it made the upper part of the lava colder and harder. And this sealed off(封住)the rest of the lava below. As the inside of the lava could not break through the seal, the pressure (压力)built up until the mountain blew up.
The eruption of the volcano was followed by several earthquakes which brought about bad results.About 36,000 people were killed and many towns and villages near the sea were completely destroyed by the great waves which the earthquakes caused.

“Earthquake!” the word flashed in my brain.A roaring sound filled my ears.I tried to slide beneath my desk. The desk did a wild tap dance, slipping and sliding towards the centre of the room.I twisted my body and grabbed at the windowsill (窗沿) behind me,somehow kicking free of my dancing chair.I tried to stand. My legs skated away as if on a bucking escalator.
My fingers shook, grasped the windowsill tightly.Somewhere through the roar sounded the terrified scream of some wounded animal.I looked behind me and tried to steady my gaze on the other kids but the scene was a dizzy nightmare. Some of the class were sitting in the middle of the room, surrounded by chairs and desks. One girl was screaming.A boy was trying to claw his way across the floor to the door in a crazy crawl.
My grip froze me to the windowsill.
I cried aloud,“I’m going to die.I’m going to die.Save me.I’m not ready to die.I’m not ready!”
I hunched (弓起背部) forward on my knees and pressed my face against my clenched (紧握) fingers.I looked at the backs of my fingers and stupidly noticed the fragile pale hairs growing out of the pores (毛孔).The fingers would soon cease to exist.Somehow the impending horror of my death was too terrible to even cry about.

When newspapers and radios report the damage caused by a hurricane (飓风)called Hazel, girls named Hazel are probably played a joke on by others. To keep out of trouble, the Weather Bureau says,“Any resemblance(相似)between hurricane names and the names of particular girls is only accidental.”
Some women became angry because hurricanes are given their names, but many other women are proud to see their names make headlines. They don’t even care that they are the names of destructive storms.Because more women seem to like it than dislike it,the Weather Bureau has decided to continue using girls’ names for hurricanes.
In some ways a hurricane is like a person. After it is born,it grows and develops, then becomes old and dies. Each hurricane has a character of its own. Each follows its own way through the world, and people remember it long after it has gone.So it is natural to give hurricanes names, and to talk about them almost as if they were alive.

C.Others often make fun of them.

Easy Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp
Everyone is forgetful, but as we age,we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit—and that can be a very annoying thing. 33 Read on for some techniques worth trying.
1. 34
People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer’s disease (早老性痴呆症),according to a recent study. 35 Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do.There’s evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward.

Mildly raised glucose (葡萄糖) levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down to normal levels. In fact, exercise produces chemicals that are good for your brain. 36
3.Learn something new.
Take a Spanish class online, join a drawing club,or learn to play cards.A study found that mental stimulation (刺激) limits the weakening effects of aging on memory and the mind. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time. 37 Or go dancing with your friends.
A.Focus on the future.
B.This can be especially harmful to the aged.
C.It should be something like learning gardening.
D.So take a few minutes each day to do some reading.
E.But don’t worry if your schedule isn’t filled with life-changing events.

参考范文
October 15thSunny
An earthquake drill was held in our school this afternoon. After we had two classes, our teacher gave us some instructions on what to do during the drill.
When the alarm rang, all of us students hid ourselves in safe places, such as under the desks. As soon as the alarm ended,we followed the teacher and went downstairs one by one.We finally got together on the playground.
Through the drill,I have learned how to escape in an emergency.I think it is important for us to remain calm and know what to do when disaster strikes.
