The Making of a Believer
It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl, who is chubby and cute, fond of sitting in her one-and-only spot near the nearth (壁炉). AS I got ready, I could hear icy rain pouring down. I said a quick prayer for Baby-Girl. She was out there somewhere in the storm, I could just feel it. Sure, it had been six months since she’d gone missing, but I still had faith. It was the season for miracles, after all.
That summer, my sweet cat had disappeared from my parents’ house in Indiana. Baby-Girl had been staying with them. At the time, I lived and worked in Washington, D.C. Baby-Girl had gotten out of my parents’ house three days before I was set to fly back home to pick her up.
My dad and I spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was the family’s resident “realistic”, which mean the spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. She’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her” he said. I rolled my eyes. Dad always supported me, but he was so skepticat. He could do with a little more faith!
Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I knew I’d see her Baby-Girl again. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after T returned to D.C. without her and the weeks stretched into months, deep down I had this feeling that we’d be reunited.
How, home again for the holidays, I was de tem mined to pick up my search. I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, then persuaded Dad to drive me to the shelter, hoping she’d been found.
“Sharon, you have to be realistic,” my dad said as we headed to the garage. “She’s been gone too long. You’re not going to find her.”
“Well, I just have a feeling,” I said
Dad raised an eyebrow a she climbed into the driver’s seat to take me to the shelter.

【范文】We were led to the room where the abandoned cat lived. I tiptoed into the room with a strong feeling of anticipation. Out of nowhere, I heard a familiar meow, which absorbed my prompt attention suddenly. My eyes zeroed in on a little cat caged in the corner. She was skinnier than I remember, but it was my Baby-Girl all right! Overwhelmed with extreme excitement and
delight, I opened the cage door. Baby-Girl practically jumped into my arms. I held her close, with my eye swelling up tears, as my Dad looked on, his jaw dropping wide with shock.
Soon after, my shocked Dad drove us back home. The instant we dropped Baby-Girl off, freeing her from the carrier, she immediately dashed to the hearth, seeking her favourite spot. On seeing this scene, we all roared with laughter, signaling that my Dad’s doubts were removed as well. Against all odds, my cat was home again, right before Christmas. It was such a miracle that my heart was filled with gratitude, feeling blessed with Baby-Girl’s long-awaited companion. As for my dear father who always support me, it turned out that Baby-Girl’s return made him a man of a believer.

I was eight years old when my family moved from Towoomba to England in 1950. My mother was suffering from a rare disease and had to take treatment in London. The day before we boarded the ship, Father sent his five-year-old red heeler (Australian cattle dog), Spider, who was loved by us all, to his friend Sandy, as Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas. We didn’t know how long my mother’s treatment would take or how long we would be away.
Six weeks later, an airletter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. I will always remember my father’s face as he read this news. My mother and I tried to comfort him, knowing in our hearts how useless this was.
Sandy had advertised constantly on the media. Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. It seemed Spider just kept running and searching for us. My father worried he would be shot or dead from starvation. But our family thought that Father held a secret hope that Spider was still alive.
We sailed back to Australia two years later and my father immediately began his own search for Spider. He repeated calls to the people who had said they had seen his dog, but it turned out to be clueless.
One cold winter’s Saturday morning, eight months after our return, my father had a call from Gin Gin, 375 kilometers from Toowoomba. An elderly lady living on her own was putting food out “for a very old yellow dog”. This had been going on for a few weeks. Immediately we set off.
Five and a half hours later, we found the old house beside the bush (灌木丛). Sadly, the lady told my father that the dog hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had an upset look in his eyes. He put two fingers to his mouth and did his special whistle for Spider.

【范文】Suddenly there was a sound in the bush. My father’s eyes lit up immediately. We all looked in the direction of the sound and saw a yellow dog emerge from the bush. It was Spider! He ran towards my father, wagging his tail excitedly. My father kneeled down and hugged him tightly, tears streaming down his face. It was a heartwarming reunion.
Once home we gently cleaned him up. He was thin and tired, but still recognized us. We gave him a warm bath and fed him a delicious meal. Spider lay on the floor, looking happy and content. My father sat beside him, stroking his fur and telling him how much he had missed him. It was as if nothing had changed between them. From then on, Spider became a part of our family again, bringing us endless joy and companionship.

My parents were always against me owning my own pet, afraid of the mess it would make or that I would quickly lose interest in taking care of it, but we made a compromise: I could volunteer at a local pet shelter on the weekends to test my sense of responsibility and dedication. That was how I first came to volunteer at the Avondale pet shelter and—more importantly—where I met my future best friend, Chocolate.
One hot August afternoon, my boss Charlie told me that they were bringing in a young black Labrador Retriever and that I’d be its primary caretaker. An hour after our conversation and in came Chocolate—a beautiful dog with shining brown fur and amazing blue eyes. At about 3 months old, I expected him to be a lot more energetic and playful, but he immediately backed and lay down at the back of his pen (围栏).
I asked Charlie what was the matter with him. He replied that Chocolate had a genetic problem which caused him to be born with a short tail, leading potential owners to think there was something wrong with him; so the breeder felt that they had no choice but to give up the puppy to the shelter.
He was overlooked and underappreciated. I felt very angry at the thought that an otherwise healthy dog could be thrown away so easily. At the same time, I felt a deep sympathy for this dog who had been cheated out of the love and attention he deserved. It was at this moment that I resolved to give Chocolate as much love and attention as I could while working as a volunteer.
Although Chocolate was reluctant and shy at first. eventually through enough treats and play he slowly came around and warmed up to me. Soon enough, whenever I came around his pen to let him out for his turn of walks and play, Chocolate was always excited and jumping with joy.

【范文】One possible version:
As time passed by, the connection between Chocolate and I grew stronger and stronger. The grassland of the shelter often witnessed heartwarming and harmonious scenes where a girl and a dog chased after each other, or curdled together, leisurely enjoying sunshine’s caress. With my company and care, Chocolate’s previous shyness and timidity gave way to curiosity and enthusiasm. So attached was he to me that he even bit my trousers to stop my pace when I had to head home. Magically, whenever I approached him, my heart would brim with warmth and affection, a sense of responsibility to protect him rising deep down. Perceiving him as my best friend, I resolved to attend to him well and sheltered him from any potential harm.
One day, Charlie said Chocolate must find a home soon or he would be removed. The news struck me like a bolt from the blue, making my heart sink with deep concern that he would be ruthlessly abandoned again. However, it suddenly struck me that I could be Chocolate’s owner. Filled with eagerness and anticipation, I pleaded with my parents to allow me to keep Chocolate. Beyond my wildest dreams, they should approve of my request, telling me “Honey, your unconditional love and continuous devotion to Chocolate eventually made us change our original idea.” Now, it is a blessing that Chocolate has become my family member and it is he that awakens me to the realization that nothing can be a greater delight than dedicating love and reaping trust in reward.

My best friend, Cocoa, and I live in a senior-citizen apartment complex in a lovely small town. Cocoa is a ten-year-old poodle(卷毛狗) and I am a sixty-nine-year-old lady, so you can see we both qualify as senior citizens.
Years ago, I promised myself that when I retired I would get a chocolate poodle to share my
golden years. From the very beginning, Cocoa has always been exceptionally well-behaved. I never have to tell him anything more than once. He is extremely neat—when taking toys from his box to play, he always puts them back when he is finished. I have been accused of being obsessively neat, and sometimes I wonder if he mimics me or if he was born that way, too.
He is a wonderful companion. When I throw a ball for him, he picks it up in his mouth and gives it back to me. He does many amusing things that make me laugh, and when that happens, he is so delighted that he just keeps it up. I enjoy his company very much.
But almost two years ago, Cocoa did something that challenged comprehension. Was it a miracle or a coincidence It is certainly a mystery.
One afternoon, Cocoa started acting strangely. I was sitting on the floor playing with him when he started pawing and sniffing at the right side of my chest. He had never done anything like this before, and I told him, “No.” Usually, one “no” is sufficient, but not that day. He stopped briefly, then suddenly ran toward me from the other side of the room, throwing his entire weight—eighteen pounds—at the right side of my chest. He crashed into me and I yelled in pain. It hurt more than I thought it would have.
Soon after this, I felt a lump (肿瘤). I went to the doctors, and after X-rays, tests and lab work were done, they told me I had cancer.

【范文】
When cancer starts, a wall of calcium(钙) builds to which the lump or cancer attaches itself. This is known as calcification. It is believed that calcium acts as a protective barrier that isolates the cancerous cells from the surrounding tissues. Cocoa’s strange behavior that day, pawing and sniffing at the right side of my chest, could have been a response to the changes happening in my body. Animals, especially dogs, have an incredible sense of smell and can detect subtle changes in our body odors. It is possible that Cocoa could sense the presence of the cancerous cells even before any physical symptoms or pain appeared.
Was Cocoa just aware of what he was doing I believe so. Cocoa’s actions that day were extraordinary. He not only detected the presence of cancer but also tried to draw my attention to it by pawing and crashing into me. His behavior was a clear gesture of concern and protection. Cocoa’s intervention ultimately led to my early detection and treatment, and this incident made me reflect on the unique bond that humans share with their pets. And I will forever be grateful for having such a caring and perceptive companion by my side.

Josie and I wanted a dog more than anything else. Whenever we had time, we’d sit together and talk about dogs. “You’re so silly, Jake,” Josie would say. “Bulldogs (斗牛犬) are scary.” “Hah. Golden retrievers (金毛猎犬) are scary,” I’d say. We had this ongoing argument about what our ideal dog would be. But it made no difference—any dog would do, as long as it had a tail to wag and a friendly face.
One summer night, as we sat together beside the window, Josie saw something. “What’s that ” she said, pointing to a dark shadow on our driveway. The moon was up and everything looked either black or milky. At first all I saw was darkness. Then the shadow moved and I heard the sound of metal. Then the shadow flowed out onto the silvery driveway. With a little fright, we found ourselves stepping down to the front door. There in our yard stood a dog—a big, black dog with long, shaggy (蓬松的) hair.
Josie made a little kissing noise and held out her hand. “Here, boy!” I said. And the dog came to us slowly, taking a few steps forward, and then a step back, not sure whether to trust us. When close enough, it had a doggy smell that always made me think of dirt and grass and piles of leaves. “Don’t say ‘Here, boy’,” said Josie. “She’s a female.” Pulling back and looking, I said, “I wonder
what her name is.” I felt for her collar while she sat patiently. I found no tags, but just a chain with a small old bell on it.
“I bet she’s hungry,” said Josie. “I can feel her ribs.” I ran my hand through her fur. The dog was so skinny that you could feel every bone, and her coat was twisted and full of dirt. If she belonged to someone, they weren’t taking good care of her.

【范文】范文:
“What can we give her ” Josie asked me. “Milk! I’ll get her some milk.” I went into the kitchen to fill one plate with milk and some raw eggs. The dog ate everything up, but instantly she finished, she ran into the shadows. “Don’t go!” Josie called loudly. But the dog was gone. “She’ll be back when hungry again,” I said. “Nobody is feeding her.” The following evening, as soon as we set the plate down, she appeared as if from nowhere. We named her ‘Shadow’ and gave her food again, but this time for some reason she wouldn’t eat it.
The dog did something completely unexpected. She grabbed the plate in her mouth and
dragged it away into the bushes. When running there, we couldn’t find her. This went on for several days. However, one night, Shadow didn’t come. Josie and I tried to figure out what had happened. Another two days passed but we got no answer. We couldn’t wait to comb through the bushes until we found something unexpected. At our feet lay a litter of four puppies, squeaking and climbing around on top of each other. Our plates were there, and so was Shadow, cold and motionless. She must have saved all her food for her puppies.

篇完整的短文。
Tom is a special child. Ever since he was little, dogs have been his greatest passion. He often growled (低吼) and barked and sometimes moved around the house on all fours. His parents brought in a little brown female dog named Lynn. Tom was on cloud nine. One day, this little boy, together with Lynn, was sitting quietly down by the side of the street when suddenly a giant dog walked across him. He was a little surprised and started screaming as loudly as he could! All of this frightened Lynn away immediately.
Tom’s parents tried to see what the chances were of Lynn coming home on her own. But five days later, there was still no sign of Lynn. The boy didn’t just have tears streaming down his cheeks — his parents were saddened too.
The woods behind their home stretched for over 50 miles! Together with their neighbors, they searched for over a month. But Lynn was gone. Tom’s parents wanted to choose a new puppy for him. But no dog could replace Lynn for him.
Tom was not the same boy. He locked himself in his room. He seemed to have lost his love for dogs. He could not focus his attention on his classes so he didn’t want to go to school. He would easily get angry with people around him. Tom changed from a happy, smiling boy to an upset and annoying kid.
Tom’s parents wanted him to stay home and he had been studying at home ever since. His parents accompanied him almost every day, but staying home didn’t help much. The boy’s mother worried a lot. One rainy afternoon, she saw him staring out the window. “I miss Lynn so much. I wonder if everything is okay with her ” It had been a long time since his beloved dog ran away, but Tom’s despair was as great as the day it happened. Days later, Tom walked out the front door with his head down and sat by the side of the street.

【范文】 A huge brown dog crossed the street and stood in front of the crying boy. The animal barked twice and watched Tom, tongue rolling out. It was only after a few minutes that he looked at it more closely. The four-legged giant’s glassy eyes reminded him of hugging by the fireplace and running between the sprinklers in the backyard. He knew the dog very well. It was Lynn!!! Tom ran to his friend and wrapped his arms tightly around her neck.
Lynn licked his cheeks and then walked to the edge of the woods. Tom ran after Lynn and entered the woods. He lost sight of her for a moment, but luckily soon heard his friend barking. And he finally saw it… Lynn grew up to be an adult dog and became a mother! She had three fluffy, sweet little puppies. Tom took Lynn and her puppies home and his parents were very happy to adopt the little dogs. Tom took good care of Lynn and her puppies. He shared his story, showing his appreciation of tiny animals. Tom made a full recovery. He happily returned to school. His classmates visit him almost every day. Of course, they want to see not only Tom, but also Lynn and her puppies.

In a very cold January, a puppy wandered around Mr. Lacey’s house, where he lived with his wife Mamie and their daughter Doris. Icicles (冰锥) hung three feet or more from the roofs of houses and snow swallowed up cars.
The puppy had been abandoned, and it made its way down the road toward the Laceys’ small house, with its ears down and trembling from shyness and cold. Doris, whose school had been called off because of the snow, was clearing the steps when she spotted the puppy on the road.
“Come on, little dog!” she called it over. The puppy shyly wagged its tail when Doris approached. As soon as Doris put the dog down in the kitchen, her mom, Mrs. Lacey, asked where the dog came from. Mr. Lacey, who was cleaning his fingernails with his pocketknife at the table, said, “I don’t know where it came from, but I know for sure where it’s going.” Doris hugged the puppy hard against her. She said nothing.
Because of the snowy weather, Mr. Lacey couldn’t take the puppy to the shelter right away.
So, it stayed in the basement, and Doris fed it leftovers, even though her mom didn’t want to waste food. Doris thought the puppy was around six months old and would be quite noisy sometimes. Surprisingly, the puppy behaved well, didn’t cry or make trouble in the basement, and only followed Doris upstairs when she invited it. Doris often found it on the basement steps listening to the kitchen talk and smelling the food. She felt the puppy wanted company.
Even after a week, Doris didn’t name the dog, knowing her parents wouldn’t let her keep it. Her father made so little money that any pets were out of the question. Desperate to keep the dog, Doris tried to convince her parents by praising the dog’s good behavior and expressing her love for it, but her parents didn’t give a definite answer.
Despite her efforts, Doris secretly wished the bad weather would never go away, fearing the puppy’s unavoidable trip to the shelter. However, nine days after the dog had arrived, the sun was shining.

Doris knew it was time to say goodbye to the dog and felt rather worried. She was sitting alone in the living room, hugging a pillow and rocking back and forth on the edge of a chair. She
was trying not to cry but she was not strong enough. Her face was wet and red, her eyes full of sadness. Just as Doris was at her lowest, her parents appeared from the doorway. With a smile on Mrs. Lacey’s face, she said, “Honey, Papa and I have agreed to keep the puppy as a part of our family.”
Doris put her hand to her mouth and couldn’t believe what she had heard. She looked at her parents surprisedly. “Doris, you were right. He has brought so much happiness to us,” Mr. Lacey continued, “and I drove by the local animal shelter yesterday. The conditions there are quite poor. We can’t leave him there.” Doris smiled with tears of happiness in her eyes and threw her arms around her parents. She knew they not only embraced the puppy into their family but also gave him a chance at a much happier life.

For many, an act of kindness is its own reward. But Eva Hachey found her selflessness answered in ways she could never have imagined.
For weeks, Eva Hachey had imagined adopting a golden Chihuahua with a white spot on its forehead. And there he was, at her local SPCA in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The dog had been abused by his previous owners and was timid. “He’d come to me, then back away and growl, then come back to me,” Hachey said. “After 15 minutes, the attendant picked him up and put him in my lap. He started giving me kisses. He stole my heart in that moment.” She adopted the ten-month-old puppy on the spot and named him Bruno.
Bruno lived happily with Hachey and her 35-year-old daughter, Angel Hutchinson, for five months. Then, on the evening of September 26, 2016, Hachey, 52 at the time, returned home as usual at 8 p. m. from her job as a chiropractic assistant and office manager. And as usual, she ate supper in front of the TV in the living room. Around 10: 30, a friend called, just as Bruno went into Hutchinson’s room to go to sleep for the night. Hachey and her friend chatted a bit, and as Hachey hung up, she noticed the time was 11: 08.
“The next thing I remember was a male voice saying, ‘Eva, Eva, wake up.’ It was an emergency doctor,” said Hachey. “I looked around, and the room was just full of people. And I said, ‘What are you doing in my house ’”
What they were doing was saving her life. By the time Hachey had hung up with her friend, Hutchinson was fast asleep in her bedroom and Bruno was in his usual spot next to her under the blankets. Hachey believed Bruno heard something odd then and possibly went to the living room
to investigate.

【范文】Unexpectedly, Bruno ran back to the bedroom and tried every means to awaken Hutchinson. He barked and jumped on and off the bed. When that didn’t work, he attacked Hutchinson’s fleshy skin between her fingers. Finally, Hutchinson woke up and was immediately led into the living room, only to discover Hatchey passed out in the chair. She had almost stopped breathing and was apparently in danger. Without hesitation, Hutchson lifted her head up so her mother could breathe, and dialed 911 on her cell. The ambulance finally arrived and Hatchey was rushed to the hospital. It turned out that she suffered a stroke and would have died without the quick response.
A year later, Hachey finally fully recovered. Recalling the experience, she was convinced that being found so quickly after the attack was the key factor in helping her survive. She owed it to Bruno, saying that it was he that saved her life. “I never imagined he would save my life when I adopted him. I do believe the animal will pick us and I am lucky he chose me. ” Hatchey gazed at Bruno and stroked his fur gently, smiling contentedly. Any act of kindness is its own reward, no
matter how small it seems.

Sarah was a kind girl who lived near a big forest. She loved animals more than anything else. The forest was her favorite place, where she liked to watch the animals.
One cold winter day, she found a hurt deer caught in a trap. It looked awfully scared, and Sarah knew she had to help immediately. She went close slowly and set the deer free. The deer
seemed to know that Sarah was kind, and they became friends. She named the deer Grace. She built a rough shelter from old pieces of wood for Grace.
Every day, Sarah went to see Grace. She brought food, water, and bandages for Grace’s hurt leg. Slowly, the leg got better. They liked to spend time together. Sarah would read to Grace, and Grace would listen.
When spring came, Grace’s leg was all better. It was time for her to go back to the wild. Saying goodbye was very hard for Sarah. She hugged Grace and cried as she watched her go back to the forest. But she knew it was the right thing to do.
The years went by, and Sarah never forgot about Grace. She wanted to keep helping animals, so she became an animal doctor for wild animals. She helped many animals, but Grace was always special to her.
Their time together was filled with love and trust. It changed Sarah’s life and helped her know what she wanted to do. Every day, she thought about Grace’s gentle eyes and their friendship. It made her want to help other animals like she helped Grace.
Sarah’s story with Grace was more than just a girl and a deer. It was about love. trust, and understanding. It was about knowing what is right and doing it, even when it’s hard. Most of all, it was about a friendship that lasted forever, in Sarah’s heart.

Our neighbor, Mrs. Moore is an old artist, who lives alone with her cat Taffy. Her husband passed away years ago and her children work in other cities. Mrs. Moore always wears a serious look but in fact she is a very nice neighbor. She does three things every day-petting Taffy, painting and baking, among which baking is the part I like. Whenever the mouth-watering smell gets over the fence, I could expect a paper bag containing delicious cookies to be passed over the fence and shared by my sister Jennifer and me. To return this favor, my dad would mow the lawn (修剪草坪) for Mrs. Moore and help repair the water pipes.
Last year, Dad put his idea of building a tree house for us in our back yard into action. Dad shot from the hip (干事利落) and got everything in place within two weeks. It was a yellow tree house with red roof, which made a great place. for Jennifer and me to get out of the sight of Mom and Dad to have fun and talk about our girlish matters. We couldn’t wait to get in only to find Taffy had taken occupation of it and messed up the inside. We ourselves were unwilling to talk about such a problem to our nice neighbor, but we had no other choice. Dad was the one we sent to Mrs. Moore’s house for a friendly talk about the issue.
After the talk, Dad took Mrs. Moore on an inspection of the tree house, at which she was extremely astonished, saying she had never expected Taffy could be so fascinated with it. She promised to take care of the problem but to our disappointment, the cat could still find ways to climb over the fence and get into the tree house. After a thousand apologies to us, Mrs. Moore gave the problem a careful consideration and came up to a big decision: In view of Taffy’s obsession (痴迷) with a tree house, why not build one specially for him

【范文】Mrs. Moore bought a ready-made one from an Internet store and had some workers fixed it up in her garden. The tree house looked great in the garden. It was in the shape of a bird nest with bright colors of purple and orange. Mrs. Moore put cat toys and cat food in it to make sure Taffy would be attracted. However, out of the expectation of all of us, however much effort she put into making the tree house attractive, the cat just wouldn’t give it a single visit, and wouldn’t stop coming into ours.
Mrs, Moore racked her brains (绞尽胸汁) and worked out a plan to exchange our tree houses. Now that she failed to attract Taffy to her tree house, she might as well attract Jennifer and me to it. She painted beautiful pictures on the walls of the tree house and put comfortable cushions in it. Sure enough, unlike the silly cat, we were wise enough to decide it was much better than our tree house and an agreement was made on the spot. We couldn’t be happier to have Mrs. Moore as our neighbor and we couldn’t love her more.

There once was a stray dog (流浪狗) named Rufus who was the most amazing dog on Kumquat Street. He could hear a ladybug blowing its nose. He could see a pill bug eating a black licorice candy at midnight. Rufus could even smell a caterpillar that hadn’t washed its feet.
You would think that Rufus, being so amazing, was also happy. But he wasn’t. You see, there was one thing that kept Rufus from being adopted by his favorite human. And that was ...Rufus barked backward. Here’s what he sounded like: “Wob-wow! Wob-wow! Fra-fra-fra! Krab-krab!”
Rufus could stand being laughed at by every squirrel and cat in the neighborhood. What he couldn't stand was that his bark kept him from living with Janie Johnson.
Janie never laughed at Rufus when he barked. More than anything else, Rufus wanted to be her pet. He wanted to play catch in her yard every day and sleep at the foot of her bed each night.
But Janie’s father, Mr. Johnson, wouldn’t hear of it. “What A dog that barks backward Wed be the laughingstocks of Kumquat Street! we Johnsons didn't get where we are today by adopting dogs that bark backward. No, Janie. It’s out of the question.”
“I’m sorry,” Janie told Rufus one morning as they sat on her front porch. “I keep telling Daddy how great you are. He just won’t listen.”
“Krab-krab!” said Rufus.
“Yes, sometimes he is bad-tempered,” said Janie “I’ll keep trying, though. Don’t worry.”
But Rufus did worry. That evening he talked it over with his friend Bill Bulldog. “I don’t think Mr Johnson will ever like me,” Rufus said. “As long as I bark backward, he’ll never let me live in his home.”
“Have you tried treatment ” asked Bill.
Rufus said, “I’ve tried everything. Nothing helps. It’s just the way I bark.”
“You’re a great dog Roof. Anyone can see that,” said Bill. “It just takes some humans longer to figure it out, that’s all. Hey, want to go with me to Succotash Street I’ve heard that their garbage is fantastic.”
Rufus yawned. “No, thanks,” he said. “I’ll take a nap.”

Eli looked up at the sky. It was bright blue, his favorite color. As he lay on his back, the soft green grass brushed against his arms and legs. The cool wind kept him at the perfect temperature, and the weather was just right for playing outside. Every summer vacation, he and his family drove to the small city of Ithaca to visit his mother’s family.
Just as Eli was starting to fall asleep in the backyard, his stomach growled (饥肠辘辘). “Time for dinner” he thought. So he stood up and began to walk back to the house. Suddenly he noticed something move out of the corner of his eye. It was near the woods in the back yard. Then he heard some rustling (沙沙地响). So he went to check what it was. When he got closer, the object stopped moving. He walked over quietly until he could see something lying in the grass — it was a baby deer!
Even though Eli was standing very close to the animal, he found it strange that the baby deer didn’t try running away. Eli rushed into the house and told his mother what he had found. “Well, we should check if the deer is injured. If not, we shouldn’t do anything because its mother will come back and take care of it,” she told Eli. So the two of them walked to the baby animal. Eli’s mother walked very slowly and finally got close enough to the deer.
Eli watched his mother frow n as she examined the baby deer. She walked back to Eli. “I think its back le g is injured,” she said. “But we’ll wait for a few hours and see if the deer’s mother comes back for it. If we do anything now, we might scare it and hurt it more.” Eli wanted to help the baby, but he knew his mother was right. They went back into the house and had lunch. They both kept checking the clock.

As the sky was getting dark, the little deer was still lying there. Eli lost his patience and couldn’t wait any longer, so he hurried his mother to save the deer since its mother wouldn’t come back. “Alright. I will call the rescue center so they can take the deer away for professional treatment,” Eli’s mother agreed. While his mother made the phone call, Eli slowly approached the deer. It couldn’t move with its leg injured but still awake. Just as he was about to reach out to comfort the deer, his mother stopped him, “Eli, you might scare it. The rescue truck will be here soon.”
Twenty minutes later, a big rescue truck drove into their driveway. Seeing two rescue personnel get off the truck, Eli ran over to them. Eli and his mother briefly described the situation and guided them to the deer. The rescue personnel checked the deer carefully, carried it to the truck and placed it in the back. “Don’t worry. We will take good care of it!” The two told Eli and his mother, and then they drove away. Eli felt a great sense of relief. “I just helped save that baby’s life!” he thought proudly.
