In order to have a better understanding of China’s growth miracle, we’re doing a series of special programmes on this subject. This, the first episode, is on Shenzhen. As the first special economic zone, Shenzhen has undergone rapid development over the decades. We have interviewed some Shenzhen residents, and now let's hear what they have to say about the pace of growth.
Interviewer: Excuse me. I’m a reporter from Life TV. May I take a few minutes of your time and ask you some questions
Interviewee: Certainly, go ahead.
Interviewer: Thank you. Were you born and brought up in Shenzhen
Interviewee: Not really, but I moved here with my parents when I was young.
Interviewer: How long have you been living here
Interviewee: More than 40 years.
Interviewer: And may I ask what your occupation is
Interviewee: I'm a software engineer for an IT company.

Interviewer: Can you describe what Shenzhen was like when you were young
Interviewee: At that time Shenzhen was only a small town surrounded by fields. There were not many people living there. Of course there were no busy streets and no traffic jams. People made a living from fishing and farming.
Interviewer: What's your impression of Shenzhen's rapid development since reform and opening up
Interviewee: Oh, there's been a huge change! It has developed into an international city with modern skyscrapers all around and a population of over 12 million people. Isn't that amazing
Interviewer: That’s for sure. How would you compare your life then and now

Interviewee: Compared with the past, life is busier, and everything is changing all the time. In the past, people just stayed in the same area, and one day was just like any other. But now each day brings something new. New things keep coming, and I’ve lived in many different places in Shenzhen, always on the move.
Interviewer: Are you happy with all this change
Interviewee: Yes. Although the pace is faster, life is easier, and it's certainly interesting!
Interviewer: What would you say about Shenzhen today
Interviewee: Today's Shenzhen is a very special place, and I'm proud to live here. It's also full of opportunities and challenges, especially for young people. I think Shenzhen is a place where they can realise their dreams.
Interviewer: OK. Thank you very much for your time.
Interviewee: You're welcome.
