动词-ing形式作主语常用来表示经常性或习惯性的动作且通常放在句首。

-ing形式作主语
1. 直接置于句首
-ing形式作主语时，谓语动词用单数形式。
(1)It is useless trying to argue with Shylock.
和夏洛克争辩是没有什么用的。
(2)It’s worth making the effort.
这事值得努力去做。
(3)It is pleasant working with you.
跟你在一起工作是令人愉快的。
(4) It's no use crying over split milk.
覆水难收。
2. 用形式主语it，把真正的 -ing形式移置句尾。但这种句子形式有一定的限制，作表语的只能是某些形容词或少数名词。

1. It + be + a waste of time doing…
做……是浪费时间。
2. It is/was no good/use doing…
做……是没益/用处的。
3. It is/was hardly/scarcely worth doing...
做……不值得。
4. It is/was worth/worthwhile doing…
做……是值得的。
常用it 作形式主语，-ing形式后置的句型有：
Rewrite the underlined sentences with -ing form as subject.
Etenesh Diro had almost completed two thirds of the 3000 m steeplechase, when disaster struck. She got tangled up with some other competitors. It made her fall. Her right shoe started to come off. She tried to pull the shoe back on, but it cost her precious time. One after the other, the runners overtook her. She threw the shoe away. This meant she could get up quickly and fight for her position in the race.
She ran the rest of the race with just one shoe on and her right foot bare. It raised a big cheer for her. Luckily, she was later given a chance to compete in the final. She lost a shoe. But it didn’t keep her from taking part. This is the true spirit of sport.
