B
It was a cold May morning when I received an intriguing (有趣的) email from an old high school friend inviting me to join a 10-day all-girls surf trip. I knew I had to say yes.
The trip seemed simple enough. Ten women aged 30 to 45, all complete strangers, gathered on the coast of Portugal to try something new: surfing in the Atlantic Ocean.
I have always loved traveling, so I eagerly sent an email to my boss seeking permission from him to make the once-in-a-life trip.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my past 33 years, it’s that adults typically spend their days mastering the things they’ve done before. It seems like we pride ourselves on becoming experts in whatever field we’ve fallen into, knowing more and more about less and less.
Now, in theory, this is a great strategy, as it allows you to become really, really good at one particular thing, but it also kind of ends up leaving some skills lacking.
I met my new surfing companions on the grass of the hotel lawn in a small surf town called Ericeira. Despite our different personalities and backgrounds, we were all united in a relentless desire to challenge ourselves, learn, tackle and grow.
The shores at Ericeira, where the beginners learn to surf, are shallow and covered with slippery rocks. They make for softer waves but are difficult to navigate.
Guided by our amazing coaches, together, we faced the waves. Sometimes, it poured with rain, and the waves crashed around us, but we were still out there. And with every slip and fall, words of encouragement filled the air.
Honestly, I probably spent most of my days frozen to the bone, but that didn’t matter because a new level of genuine joy and personal achievement had been unlocked. Learning a new skill taught me the humility that can come from doing badly at something new, and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on.
While surfing might not be my calling, trying it out inspired me to take more risks in life, to step outside of my comfort zone and to never stop believing in myself. You never know what you’re capable of if you don’t go out there and try.

42.What is the author’s view on adults focusing on mastering one field
A.It blocks creativity and exploration. B.It is essential for career success.
C.It disturbs one’s work-life balance. D.It narrows one’s abilities.
43.Which of the following words best describe the author’s surfing experience
A.Tough but rewarding. B.Relaxing but unpredictable.
C.Difficult but interesting. D.Tiring but meaningful.
44.What can be inferred about the author
A.She discovered her true calling atter the trip.
B.She used to lack confidence in herself.
C.She became more willing to challenge herself.
D.She went on to become an expert surfer.
45.What wisdom did the author gain from the experience with surfing
A.The need to seek professional training in all new skills.

Ten women aged 30 to 45, all complete strangers, gathered on the coast of Portugal to try something new: surfing in the Atlantic Ocean.(这次旅行似乎很简单。 和第三段“I have always loved traveling, so I eagerly sent an email to my boss seeking permission from him to make the once-in-a-life trip.(我一直很喜欢旅行,所以我急切地给老板发了一封电子邮件,希望他允许我进行一次一生一次的旅行。)”和第六段第二句“Despite our different personalities and backgrounds, we were all united in a relentless desire to challenge ourselves, learn, tackle and grow.(尽管我们的个性和背景不同,但我们都团结在一起,渴望挑战自我,学习,解决和成长。)”
根据第五段“Now, in theory, this is a great strategy, as it allows you to become really, really good at one particular thing, but it also kind of ends up leaving some skills lacking.(现在,从理论上讲,这是一个很好的策略,因为它可以让你变得非常非常擅长某一件事,但最终也会让你缺乏一些技能。)”
根据第八段“Guided by our amazing coaches, together, we faced the waves. Sometimes, it poured with rain, and the waves crashed around us, but we were still out there. And with every slip and fall, words of encouragement filled the air.(在我们出色的教练的带领下,我们一起面对海浪。有时,下着大雨,海浪在我们周围拍打,但我们仍然在那里。每一次滑倒,空气中都充满了鼓励的话语。)”和第九段“Honestly, I probably spent most of my days frozen to the bone, but that didn’t matter because a new level of genuine joy and personal achievement had been unlocked. Learning a new skill taught me the humility that can come from doing badly at something new, and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on.(老实说,我可能大部分时间都僵在骨头上,但这并不重要,因为真正的快乐和个人成就的新水平已经被解锁了。学习一项新技能教会了我在新事物上做得不好时的谦卑,以及当你最终掌握了你一直在做的事情时产生的自豪感。)”可知,作者的冲浪经历艰难但值得。故选A。
根据最后一段第一句“While surfing might not be my calling, trying it out inspired me to take more risks in life, to step outside of my comfort zone and to never stop believing in myself.(虽然冲浪可能不是我的使命,但尝试它激励我在生活中承担更多的风险,走出我的舒适区,永远不要停止相信自己。)”
根据倒第二段“Honestly, I probably spent most of my days frozen to the bone, but that didn’t matter because a new level of genuine joy and personal achievement had been unlocked. Learning a new skill taught me the humility that can come from doing badly at something new, and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on.(老实说,我可能大部分时间都僵在骨头上,但这并不重要,因为真正的快乐和个人成就的新水平已经被解锁了。学习一项新技能教会了我在新事物上做得不好时的谦卑,以及当你最终掌握了你一直在做的事情时产生的自豪感。)”和最后一段第一句“While surfing might not be my calling, trying it out inspired me to take more risks in life, to step outside of my comfort zone and to never stop believing in myself.(虽然冲浪可能不是我的使命,但尝试它激励我在生活中承担更多的风险,走出我的舒适区,永远不要停止相信自己。)”

Reports have emerged recently of cows being fed supplements (补充剂) obtained from palm oil (棕榈油) to increase the butterfat content of milk. The practice partly responds to the increasing demand for butter during the pandemic when the number of milk cows has not increased accordingly. Thus, palmitic acid supplements, obtained from imported palm oil are given to cows.
According to Dairy (乳品业的) Farmers of Canada(DFC), it is used in other countries as well to “provide energy to cows without undesirable effects”. Experts of DFC guarantee that the milk products are safe and that the amounts of supplements used are very small. But based on Canadians’ concern over the link between butter and palm oil, it appears more complicated. Lots of Canadians have been deliberately trying to avoid palm oil in diets, only to realize that palm oil is being used in the dairy industry.
People are concerned about the nutrition question, for too much palmitic acid is associated with heart disease. Besides, palm fats change the taste of milk, which is a headache for many food producers. But those are not what disturb me. In fact, palm oil has a bad reputation for driving deforestation, particularly in Southeast Asia, which produces 85% of the world’s palm oil supply. The rapid expansion of palm oil has destroyed habitats for many wild animals. Fires are set to replace jungles with palm trees, polluting the air, and some are impossible to put out.
Despite the harmful effects palm oil may bring about, palm oil is found in roughly 50% of the products sold in supermarkets. It is cheap to produce and stays solid at room temperature, making it perfect for baked and packaged foods. It has a high cooking temperature and smoke point, providing smooth mouthfeel. It’s also added to make-up, cleaning products, chocolate, fuels, and more.
Some organizations are making efforts to clean up the palm oil industry through various practices. Big brands are formally warned when their palm oil suppliers engage in illegal expansion, which in turn has driven them to take action, even if their action seems inadequate currently. There’s hope on the horizon, but the palm oil industry is still one I won’t give support to.
46.Why are cows fed supplements made from palm oil
A.To get more palmitic acid. B.To cut down the expense of feed.
C.To protect cows against diseases. D.To meet the demand for butter.
47.What can be known from Paragraph 2
A.Increased supplements lead to less milk. B.Canadians care little about the dairy industry
C.The public are dependent on experts’ advice. D.DFC’s guarantee receives no desired result.
48.Why is the author anxious about the use of palm oil
A.For the potential health risks. B.For the environmental concerns.
C.For the low output of palm trees. D.For the waste of food resources.
49.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about concerning palm oil
A.Why it is badly needed. B.How it boosts the food industry.
C.What industrial development it leads to. D.How it is produced.
50.What is the author’s attitude towards some organizations and big brands’ action
A.Indifferent. B.Critical. C.Favorable. D.Objective.
【答案】46.D 47.D 48.B 49.A 50.C
根据第一段中的“The practice partly responds to the increasing demand for butter during the pandemic when the number of milk cows has not increased accordingly.(这种做法在一定程度上是为了应对疫情期间对黄油需求的增加,而奶牛的数量并没有相应增加。)”
根据第二段中的“Experts of DFC guarantee that the milk products are safe and that the amounts of supplements used are very small. But based on Canadians’ concern over the link between butter and palm oil, it appears more complicated. (DFC的专家保证牛奶产品是安全的,而且所用的补充剂数量很少。但基于加拿大人对黄油和棕榈油之间联系的担忧,这似乎更为复杂。)”可知,虽然DFC做出了保证,但由于加拿大人对黄油和棕榈油之间联系的担忧,这种保证并没有得到人们的认可。由此可推测出,DFC的保证没有得到想要的结果。故选D。
48.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“People are concerned about the nutrition question, for too much palmitic acid is associated with heart disease. Besides, palm fats change the taste of milk, which is a headache for many food producers. But those are not what disturb me.(人们关心营养问题,因为过多的棕榈酸会导致心脏病。此外,棕榈脂肪会改变牛奶的味道,这是许多食品生产商头疼的问题。但这些并没有让我感到不安。)”可知,作者对棕榈油带来的营养问题、口味问题并没有很在意,所以下文的内容是作者真正在意的问题。结合下文“In fact, palm oil has a bad reputation for driving deforestation, particularly in Southeast Asia, which produces 85% of the world’s palm oil supply. The rapid expansion of palm oil has destroyed habitats for many wild animals. Fires are set to replace jungles with palm trees, polluting the air, and some are impossible to put out.(事实上,棕榈油因助长森林砍伐而名声不佳,尤其是在东南亚,那里的棕榈油供应量占世界的85%。棕榈油的迅速膨胀破坏了许多野生动物的栖息地。大火将用棕榈树取代丛林,污染空气,有些无法扑灭。)”可知,棕榈油致使森林砍伐、野生动物栖息地破坏、空气污染,这些环境问题让作者对使用棕榈油感到担心。故选B。
49.主旨大意题。根据第四段首句“Despite the harmful effects palm oil may bring about, palm oil is found in roughly 50% of the products sold in supermarkets.(尽管棕榈油可能会带来有害影响,但在超市销售的产品中,约有50%含有棕榈油。)”可知,超市销售的产品中大约有一半都含有棕榈油,这说明它需求量很大,下文“It is cheap to produce and stays solid at room temperature, making it perfect for baked and packaged foods. It has a high cooking temperature and smoke point, providing smooth mouthfeel. It’s also added to make-up, cleaning products, chocolate, fuels, and more.(它生产成本低,在室温下保持固体,非常适合烘焙和包装食品。它具有较高的烹饪温度和冒烟点,提供顺滑的口感。它还被添加到化妆品、清洁产品、巧克力、燃料等中。)”讲述了棕榈油的特点以及广泛的使用范围,由此可推测出,本段主要讲述了棕榈油需求量大的原因。故选A。
根据最后一段中的“Some organizations are making efforts to clean up the palm oil industry through various practices. Big brands are formally warned when their palm oil suppliers engage in illegal expansion, which in turn has driven them to take action, even if their action seems inadequate currently. (一些组织正在通过各种做法努力整顿棕榈油行业。当大品牌的棕榈油供应商进行非法扩张时,他们会受到正式警告,这反过来又迫使它们采取行动,即使他们目前的行动似乎不够充分。)”和“There’s hope on the horizon(希望就在眼前)”可知,一些组织正在努力整顿棕榈油行业,而且一些大品牌棕榈油供应商会采取行动,作者认为希望就在眼前,由此可推测出,作者对他们的行动表示支持。故选C。

Culture can affect not just language and customs, but also how people experience the world on surprisingly basic levels.
Researchers, with the help of brain scans, have uncovered shocking differences in perception (感知) between Westerners and Asians, what they see when they look at a city street, for example, or even how they perceive a simple line in a square, according to findings published in a leading science journal.
In western countries, culture makes people think of themselves as highly independent individuals. When looking at scenes, Westerners tend to focus more on central objects than on their surroundings. East Asian cultures, however, emphasize inter-dependence. When Easterners look at a scene, they tend to focus on surroundings as well as the object.
Using an experiment involving two tasks, Dr Hedden asked subjects to look at a line simply to estimate its length, a task that is played to American strengths. In another, they estimated the line’s length relative to the size of a square, an easier task for the Asians. The level of brain activity, by tracking blood flow, was then measured by Brain Scanners. The experiment found that although there was no difference in performance, and the tasks were very easy, the levels of activity in the subjects’ brains were different. For the Americans, areas linked to attention lit up more, when they worked on the task they tended to find more difficult — estimating the line’s length relative to the square. For the Asians, the attention areas lit up more during the harder task also — estimating the line’s length without comparing it to the square. The findings are a reflection of more than ten years of previous experimental research into east-west differences.
In one study, for instance, researchers offered people a choice among five pens; four red and one green. Easterners were more likely to choose a red pen while Westerners were more likely’ to choose the green one.
Culture is not affecting how you see the world, but how you choose to understand and internalize it. But such habits can be changed. Some psychological studies suggest that when an Easterner goes to the West or vice versa, habits of thought and perception also begin to change. Such research gives us clues on how our brain works and is hopeful for us to develop programs to improve our memory, memory techniques and enhance and accelerate our learning skills.
51.According to the passage, Chinese people are most likely to ___.
A.more emphasize independent thinking
B.always focus more on their surroundings
C.think of Westerners as highly independent individuals
D.focus more on the context as well as the object
52.We know from the passage that people’s brains will be more active when ___.
A.the task is much easier B.the blood flow is tracked
C.the task is more difficult D.people begin to choose colors
53.What do the findings of the experiment mentioned in the 4th paragraph indicate
A.They indicate that culture has a great impact on the way people talk and behave.
B.They show that Easterners and Westerners have great differences in perceiving the world.
C.They suggest that people’s habits of thought and-perception can be changed in different cultures.
D.They make it clear that Easterners and Westerners lay emphasis on different things.
54.It can be inferred from the passage that ____.
A.Easterners prefer collectivism to individualism
B.East Asian cultures lay more emphasis on independence
C.It took over ten years to find out how to improve our brainpower
D.Americans will change their habits of perception when they’re in Britain
55.Which of the following will be the best title of the passage
A.Chinese culture: why it has an advantage over Western culture
B.Western culture and Chinese culture: which will be more suitable for us
C.Western culture and Chinese culture: why we should learn from both
D.Western culture vs. Chinese culture
【答案】51.D 52.C 53.B 54.A 55.C

根据第三段中的最后一句“When Easterners look at a scene, they tend to focus on surroundings as well as the object.(当东方人看一个场景时,他们倾向于关注周围的环境以及目标)”可知,当东方人看到一个场景,他们倾向于关注周围的环境以及目标。
根据第四段中的“For the Americans, areas linked to attention lit up more, when they worked on the task they tended to find more difficult — estimating the line’s length relative to the square. For the Asians, the attention areas lit up more during the harder task also — estimating the line’s length without comparing it to the square.(对于美国人来说,当他们完成更难的任务——估计直线相对于正方形的大小——时,与注意力相关的区域更加活跃。对于亚洲人来说,在更困难的任务中——估计线的长度而不将其与正方形进行比较——注意力区域也更加活跃)”可知,美国人和亚洲人在面对更加困难的任务时,脑部与注意力有关的区域的活动性增强了,变得更加活跃了。故选C。
53.推理判断题。根据第四段最后一句“The findings are a reflection of more than ten years of previous experimental research into east-west differences.(这些发现反映了十多年来对东西方差异的实验研究)”可知,第四段提到的研究发现表明东方人和西方人对世界的感知是不同的。故选B。
根据第三段中的第一句“In western countries, culture makes people think of themselves as highly independent individuals.(在西方国家,文化使人们认为自己是高度独立的个体)”和第三句“East Asian cultures, however, emphasize inter-dependence.(然而,东亚文化强调相互依赖)”可知,东方人更喜欢集体主义而不是个人主义。故选A。
根据全文内容,结合第二段中“Researchers, with the help of brain scans, have uncovered shocking differences in perception (感知) between Westerners and Asians(研究人员在脑部扫描的帮助下,发现了西方人和亚洲人在感知上的惊人差异)”和最后一段中“Such research gives us clues on how our brain works and is hopeful for us to develop programs to improve our memory, memory techniques and enhance and accelerate our learning skills.(这样的研究为我们提供了大脑如何工作的线索,并为我们开发改善记忆、记忆技巧、增强和加速学习技能的程序带来了希望)”可知,文章介绍了一项对于东西方人的认知方面的不同的研究,得出结论:西方人认为自己是独立的,东方人认为人们是相互依存的关系,文化差异导致东西方人认知的差异,但是心理学家也发现这是可以改变的。

Yesterday my parents were heading off on a little holiday and I took them to the train station, the rain was pouring down.
I got their luggage out, helped them get to the elevator and sent them on their way. As I was walking back to the parking lot, I saw an elderly man walking slowly toward the bus station. Obviously, he had no umbrella. I walked over and asked him where he was going. It turned out that he was heading to the same town as I was, just a 15-minute drive. I offered him a lift which he gratefully accepted.
We had a lovely chat on the way and I learned some of his history. He was 87 and heading to the nursing home he had just put his beloved wife in last week. He had his driving license taken away last year so he had to take public transport every day. A tear fell down his cheek as he told me about his wife. I tried to hold back my own tears but failed.
As I dropped him off at the entrance of the nursing home, I gave him the bunch of flowers I had in the car which I had given to my mom on Mother’s Day. I would much rather see the flowers indulged in by him and his wife than just take them back home. Tears rolled down his cheeks and he thanked me gratefully. As I made my way back to my car, I totally lost control of my emotions and cried like a baby. I just felt that all the stars shone for some reason and I was meant to meet him today. I was very glad to be able to help him in some way.
56.What was the purpose of the author’s visit to the train station (no more than 10 words)
57.What was the elderly man going to do (no more than 10 words)

根据文章最后一段indulged in前的内容“I gave him the bunch of flowers I had in the car which I had given to my mom on Mother’s Day. I would much rather see the flowers(我把车里的那束原本打算送给我妈妈的那束花送给了他,我宁愿看到这些花……)”
根据文章最后一段“I was very glad to be able to help him in some way.(我很高兴我能帮助到他)”可知,作者乐于帮助他,因为作者是一个善良的人。且根据最后一段“As I dropped him off at the entrance of the nursing home, I gave him the bunch of flowers I had in the car which I had given to my mom on Mother’s Day.(当我将他送到养老院门口时,我将那束原本要送给妈妈的花送给了他)”可知,作者是一个慷慨大方的人。 He was a kind and generous man for offering a lift to an old man and giving him a brunch of flowers。
