When I was about five years old. I saw a beautiful rainbow that seemed to be losing itself in a thick wood about half a mile away.
“Do you know, Grace.” said my little brother, who was just recovering from a severe illness. “that if we go to the end of the rainbow. we will find precious treasures there ”
“Really ” I asked.
“Yes.” answered my brother. with a bright smile on his pale face.
As simple-minded children, we believed everything that we were told. Without a second thought, we set off toward the wood. I ran so fast that my brother called after me as loudly as he could. Being sure where the rainbow ended. I pushed ahead without waiting for him.
But when I reached the edge wood, the end of the rainbow was not there! Instead. I saw it shining down among the trees a little farther off. So on and on I struggled through the thick bushes till I came within the sound of a stream. I reached the bank of the stream, and I could see it a little way off on the other side. I crossed the stream on a fallen tree, and still ran on, though my feet were aching and my knees were shaking.
On the way, I met a huge snake, I tried to run away from it as fast as my tired feet could carry me. And in my fright and hurry, I forgot to keep my eyes on the rainbow, and when, at last, I looked for it, it was gone! Even worse, I couldn’t see my brother anywhere in sight. l sat down and burst into tears, for I felt that I had lost all my treasures. I had nothing but muddy feet and a wet and torn dress. So I decided to go back home.

When school was over, the day was fading and it started to drizzle(毛毛雨). I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again: a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste, a weekend at home. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy, but something like dismay(沮丧). I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking(嘎吱作响) against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up for the weekend, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the numerous cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache once in a while. She just looks a homely middle-aged housewife. Being a practitioner of DIY, she knits most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half joking manner: homemade.
I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been much fun riding with mom. But just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.

It was a lovely spring morning in the mountains of my home. Here was full of natural atmosphere. The sky was blue, the sun was warm, and the air was fresh. As driving along the winding road, I could see thousands of wild flowers in bloom. When I turned round, I slowed down as I saw some volunteers picking up garbage along the side of the road. I just smiled as I saw them doing some cleaning in spring for Mother Earth and my mind suddenly floated back in time to another spring morning long ago.
When my children were younger, I used to walk along a small route around the lake near my home. It was also on a spring morning that I noticed much garbage lying along the route. The next day, I brought a big garbage bag and started to slowly pick up the garbage along my way. All kinds of deserted objects lay all over the floor. There were pop cans, plastic water bottles, wrappers for candy bars, empty chip bags, pieces of broken fishing line and even an old shoe. Every time I stopped, I picked up a piece of garbage. And I even fished some garbage out of the edge of the water. By the time I circled the lake, the garbage bag had been nearly full.
Tired but happy, I put the bag in an empty garbage can. I stopped before I headed home and took one last look at the lake as the sun set. It looked more beautiful than ever and I felt like the angels were looking down upon it with me and sharing my smiles.
I always think that at times this world’s problems can seem overwhelming and you may wonder what you can do to make a difference. But the truth is that every good thing you do matters a lot! I do believe every time I stop to pick up a single piece of garbage, I can make a difference. As my children are adults now, I decide to spend more time protecting the environment.

It was the first day of the new school year. Sylvia entered the music room at a high school. The 65-year-old music teacher was known for being strict in class. Many students were afraid of her and not interested in this class. They attended music class only because they needed the credit. But Sylvia took her job seriously.
That day, she walked to the piano in the corner and started leading them into a song to get them warmed up. And she prevented those trying to joke around right away, which might explain why some students didn’t like her teaching style.
Soon enough, her class was almost over and one student asked Sylvia curiously, “What do you like to listen to at home ” “Surely, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky,” another student laughed before Sylvia could answer, making some others laugh. “I actually like a lot of pop music, and even some of the things you listen to nowadays. But I prefer to listen to classic music,” Sylvia replied, smiling at the kids.
Some returned the smile and started asking about some singers and bands. But the bell rang before she could answer all their questions and they had to leave. However, it seemed like that the fear in her students had relieved a bit since that day. Soon enough, the students got used to her and started taking her lessons more seriously.
However, one day, Sylvia’s husband suddenly died. She took two weeks off from work. Feeling sad and hopeless, she didn’t even listen to music anymore.
Before long, her students learned what happened to their music teacher. Soon, they decided to organize a performance and practice playing certain music that could be in memory of her husband and cheer her up. The sound of glass breaking is instantly recognizable. I’d been telling my best friend Missi a silly story and had spun (转) around in the living room when I heard that sound and froze.
When I looked down at the carpet, it was covered with pieces of sparkling red, pink and clear glass. Missi said. ”Oh, no, not the vase.”
“Why What did I do ” My face reddened.
“Abby, that glass vase was one of the few items my relatives brought when they came to America,” Missi replied nervously. “If you’d broken anything else in the apartment, I would have gladly said I did it. But you’re going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault, and she’s going to be really mad.“
I was terrified. I’d destroyed a priceless family heirloom (传家宝). Why did I have to spin around like that
We gathered up the shattered pieces.I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi said gently it didn’t look possible. I insisted we keep the pieces. The glass was so fragile (易碎), like a colorful light bulb had exploded. Some of it broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Missi said her mom would be home by six. My stomach was in knots. Would her mom yell at me or punish me Would she tell me I couldn’t stay in their apartment for the weekend I couldn’t stop playing the fifteen seconds over in my mind, me spinning fast and the sound of glass crashing. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry.”
A couple of minutes after six we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home. Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood. “Hello! It’s hot today. I want to treat you girls to that frozen yogurt I know you like, Let’s go!” her mom said. She pointed at the open door.

Experiences at a Sports Meet
I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. I won the B Division long jump and was a decent runner. As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet.
The meeting lasted two days. I had no events scheduled for the first day. So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete. We weren’t allowed to go near the VIP pavilion (看台) as kids, so I had to observe the proceedings from afar.
Large tents were provided for the young competitors opposite the VIP pavilion on the other side of the track. My school team was assigned the last tent that was furthest from the track. It was just our luck but we made the best use of what we had.
The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50 m relay later in the afternoon. I was a pretty good jumper and no one could outclass me. The competition began, and I jumped over 4 meters! That was quite the accomplishment. I won the gold medal in the long jump.
All my schoolmates cheered for me and I promised to win in the 8×50 m relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race time arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched, holding my breath, as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in second place.

Alexander sang all the time. He sang in the shower, he sang while he did his homework, and he sang while he walked to school. He simply loved singing. One day during a break, he heard Kevin talking about the tryouts(选拔)for the City Choir(合唱团).
“Yeah, I’m attending the tryouts this weekend,” Kevin announced. “With my voice, I’m pretty much guaranteed a spot. I don’t even need any practice as I am so talented. Imagine they’ll want me to perform lots of solos(独唱),too.”
Everyone knew that Kevin had a fantastic singing voice. Normally, Alexander just ignored him, but he couldn’t help imagining himself as a member of the choir. Wouldn’t it be fun, he thought, to sing with other kids every day and have someone actually teach him about singing
On the tryout day, Alexander took a deep breath, walked into the building, registered at a large table, and then waited nervously in the hallway. The only one who didn’t look nervous was Kevin. And why should he be He has performed as a soloist many times. Alexander, on the other hand, had never taken a musical lesson in his life, much less had performed for an audience.
After a while, the choir director, Mr.Robeson, walked in and told the kids that they were to sing a song individually, sing as a group and answer some questions. Soon the individual test began. When Alexander stood on the stage, he tried to calm down and pretended he was singing in the shower. He felt satisfied when he was done, at least until Kevin’s turn came. As Kevin s confident voice filled the room Alexander realized that he would never sound that good.
Next, Mr. Robeson put the kids into groups of four or five and asked them to sing together. Kevin’s group sang right before Alexander’s, and even with four other boys singing, Kevin’s voice clear and distinct; it seemed to reach the farthest corners of the room.

Price of a Miracle
Tess was an eight-year-old girl when she heard her mom and dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money.
Only a very costly operation could save him now and it was looking like there was no one to lend them the money. She heard Dad say to her tearful mom with desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Tess went to her bedroom and poured all the change she had saved out on the floor and counted it carefully:47 cents. She slipped out of home and made her way to Rexall’s Drug Store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Finally, she took a quarter from her pocket and banged it on the glass counter. That did it ! “And what do you want ” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago Medical University whom I haven’t seen in ages,” he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.” Tess answered with a blind faith.
The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need ” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up.
“I just know he’s really sick and Mom says he needs an operation. But my dad can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.”

9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was at the beach in Costa Rica and I sat down and started to pick out the perfect shells to add to my shell collection. I could feel the cool breeze against my soft skin. My feet felt painful as I dipped them into the cool ocean water.
There was some noise going on in the background. A man and a boy were fighting. They were each holding surfboards: one was hazy yellow while the other was light blue. The man was muscular and had tattoos(纹身) snaking down both his arms. He was beating the boy, swearing, and speaking in his native language. Meanwhile, the boy looked as if he wanted to fight back or run, but didn’t do anything. Maybe because he knew he wasn’t strong enough to fight the man.
They were so disgusting that I turned my attention to my parents. I could see my dad was a bit ticked off by them. My mom was in the water, happily swimming in the shallows while my dad was standing knee-deep in the water enjoying the waves as they came surging. There was some argument between them about getting carried away by the swift current. There was some sand in my eyes so I rubbed them for about 10 seconds. When I opened them I saw my mom waving her arms way out in the ocean.
Wow! I never knew she was such a good swimmer. But slowly my expression changed as the truth dawned on me. My mom was drowning in the ocean. I started to panic—what if I lost my mom forever. I wanted to reverse time and do something that would not put her in this position. I felt helpless. I closed my eyes and pinched myself hoping that it was a dream. Of course, it was not.

There was an old, wise man who grew sicker by the day. However, his son was still young and had yet to reach his full potential. So the man decided to teach his son the ways of the world before death comes knocking.
One morning, the man handed his son a watch passed down for generations. The boy had never seen it before so he didn’t quite know what to make of it. “What am I supposed to do with this watch, father ” “I want you to take the watch to the jeweler (珠宝商). Show him the watch and ask him how much it’s worth. But don’t accept any offer. Instead, come back home with the watch.”
The boy did as his father had instructed, but only to be told it was only worth $100. He complained, “The jeweler said he was taking a gamble (赌注)on buying the watch and that he’d have a hard time finding a buyer. And if I’m being honest, I kind of agree with him. I don’t think this watch is anything special.” The father was nodding, seemingly in agreement with the jeweler’s assessment. “Okay,” the father said. “Now take the watch to the pawnshop (当铺). See how much you can get for the watch.”
In his mind, the boy disagreed. But he didn’t want to argue with his father so he did the job anyway. However, he still went home looking defeated. “Father, the best I got was $20. They told me that the watch had problems. There were scratches (刮痕) that even I didn’t notice after carrying it with me all day.” The father, yet again, nodded in agreement.
“So what do you want me to do Should I go back to the jeweler After all, he is willing to pay more money.” “No,” said the father. “I want you to go to the museum to talk to my friend. The lady will have a better idea of what this watch is really worth.”

1.范文
But I soon found that my troubles had only begun. All at once I heard some voices. I was frightened, fearing that some unknown animals were coming near me! I could not find my way. I was lost in the wood! I could not tell which direction was east or west, north or south. So I wandered here and there, crying and calling, though I knew that no one could hear me. I was hungry, cold and scared — altogether very miserable indeed.
At last, I decided to sit down and wait for rescue. Then came familiar voices near me. The voices came from a distance, but I could tell that my family were calling me! Instantly, I tried to respond loudly and urgently, “Here! Here!” Within minutes, my family came into view. Rushing toward them, I hugged them tightly. In a guilty tone, my brother said, “My poor little sister! I thought you would know I was just kidding you.” Smiling at him, I said, “There is no treasure at the end of the rainbow. But my family are!”

She said nothing and just covered the raincoat on me. I pushed it away wildly.
Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in. With a smile, she said, “Dear son, I’m trying my best to earn our living, and I’m sure that if we work harder, we will get whatever we want in the future.” Hearing her words, I felt embarrassed. I thought of the time when she knitted in the deep night and cooked for me in the early morning. Yes, she had always been doing whatever she could to make me live well. But I was still unsatisfied. I begin to encourage others to develop the environmental awareness. I know that there is power in numbers, and I want to get as many people involved as possible. I’ve convinced my children to take action with me like I did before. We learn to make many cards to hand out to people, with some words about environment protection written on them. We’ve also set up signs around the lake to remind people to pay attention to the environment. Other members of my family also go to the lake to pick up garbage on weekends.
Many days have passed, and the surroundings have improved a lot. Thanks to our efforts, the lake has taken on a new look. The surroundings are clearer and there is no more garbage floating on its water. There is little garbage on either side of the road along the lake. It is surprising that many people take their garbage away. Few people drop garbage here. I am pleased to note that more people actively volunteer to pick up the garbage. This gives us more confidence to protect our nearby environment.

In the following days, they were busy preparing for the performance. They prepared musical instruments needed for the music. Then they separated the class into different groups, with some playing instruments and others singing. When the task was assigned, the students began to practice the music hard. Although it was challenging, they worked together, not giving up. Finally, it was time for Sylvia to return to school. Still sad and hopeless, Sylvia headed to school. And early before her class began, the students reached the music room, ready for the performance.
When Sylvia entered the music room, the beautiful music sounded. She was surprised to find her students were standing in the shape of a heart, and playing a beautiful tune for her. As her students finished the music, tears filled her eyes. Her students approached her one by one, hugging her tightly. Sylvia thanked them for their kindness. After a few minutes, she wiped her tears. “OK, let’s get back to class!” she said, and her voice was still emotional. Everyone laughed, for they knew their strict teacher was back, which made them happy.

I could feel my voice shaking and tried not to cry. “What is it, dear ” she gently asked, walking closer to me. Our hands almost touched. With her eyes studying me, my heart beat faster. “I’m sorry,” “I... I was talking and laughing with Missi when I spun around and accidentally broke the vase...we tried to fix it but in vain.”
Hearing my apology, Missi’s mother smiled at me. She embraced me, kissing me on both cheeks. “I know you didn’t mean it. Now it’s gone. Put it out of your mind.” Despite feeling relieved, I was still in shock, for this was not at all the reaction I had expected. It wasn’t until I reached my adult years that I realized how generous her mother was in welcoming my apology. Now, when I receive a genuine apology, I always consider the people’s feelings and make sure my response was fully heard and truly appreciated.(172w)

When I handed the stick to the next runner, I knew everything was lost. He ran with all his might, but it was too late. We’d blown our chance at a medal.
I felt terrible for letting the team down due to my fault. Not knowing what to say to my teammates, I cried sadly. I was so guilty and ashamed. However, instead of blaming the failure on me, my teammates gathered around me and kept comforting me that what was done was done, for which we had no regret. From the experience, I learned about failure and success and how to deal with them. I have been bearing that lesson I learned that day in mind even since and it urges me to look forward.

Finally, Mr. Robeson asked the kids about their performance experience, music lessons and trainings. All Alexander could say was, “I just really enjoy singing, but I want to learn more and practice more.” He knew his answer was not perfect, but he was willing to do whatever it takes to become a better singer in the choir.
Finally, Mr. Robeson told Alexander that he made it, not Kevin. There must have been some mistake. “How did I make it, Mr. Robeson ” asked Alexander in disbelief. “Well, you love singing. Although your voice isn’t the best, with training it will improve.” “But, what about Kevin ” Alexander asked. “Talent alone is not enough,” said Mr. Robeson. “After all, we weren’t looking for soloists.” Alexander now understood that hard work and right attitude made a difference. He couldn’t wait for the choir practice in the coming week.

The father, smiling widely, asked how much the watch was. The son cried with tears of joy, saying $35,000! With that much money the son could really enjoy life. However, the father shook his head this time. “I’m glad for you, son. You can do what you want with that watch after I’m dead. But what is more important for you is value and self-worth.”
Confused, “What do you mean by saying value and self-worth ” the son asked his father. With patience the father continued and explained, “Just like that watch, you too have value. You’ll never know your self-worth in the wrong places, but there’s always a place you can go to where everyone will see your real value.” Upon hearing his father’s explanation, the son had a newfound respect for his father as well as for his self-worth and his life. His father’s words were far more valuable than the watch he spent all day getting rated.
