Do you want to travel as cheaply as possible while enjoying nature Backpacking(背包旅行) is the best way to have a cheap and exciting trip. Carrying a tent, a sleeping bag and clothes, backpackers start their trips.
To travel with as little money as possible, they stay in cheap hotels, or in schools and universities, and they even sleep in railway stations, in tents, or under bridges.
Young people in Europe often travel around by train. Now, with plane tickets dropping in price, more people are travelling to foreign countries. But no matter where a backpacker travels, planning ahead is important. Here are some suggestions for them.
Clothing
Light clothes are the best. Backpackers must remember to travel light and not to take too many clothes.
Medicine
It's important to prepare different kinds of medicine, such as for heatstroke, snake bites and mosquitoes. Medicine for common colds and poisoning(中毒) is also important.
Cards
Three kinds of cards are necessary for backpackers: student ID cards, personal ID cards and credit cards. A student ID card can be helpful in saving money. It often helps you get train tickets at lower prices in many Western countries. Personal ID cards can not only get you out of trouble with the local police, but also be useful in all kinds of situations. Carrying a credit card can be a safe way of carrying money. Take care of all your belongings while travelling, and of course don't forget to enjoy your trip.

Zhai Mo was born in 1968 in Shandong Province. He grew up as a painter.④ In 2000, ① at an exhibition of his paintings in New Zealand, he met an old sailor from Norway. Zhai asked him how many countries he had been to. “I don't know for sure, but I've sailed around the earth one and a half times,” the sailor answered. His words encouraged Zhai a lot and then he started sailing himself.①
Zhai Mo set off from Shanghai Port to the Arctic Ocean(北冰洋) on June 30, 2021. He finished his safari on Nov.15, 2022. He is the first man in human history to sail around the Arctic Ocean without stopping.② Along with another two people, he sailed about 51,860 kilometres in over 500 days, reported China News. They didn't make a stop at any ports(港口) to rest or get fresh food.
The trip was very challenging. “The temperature in the Arctic Ocean can go down to -50 to -70℃ in winter. The icebergs are as tall as buildings and hard as rocks. They are frightening sometimes, but I'm not afraid of them.③ Whatever difficulties I meet, I never give up,” Zhai told Shine.
Sailing around the Arctic Ocean became possible for the first time in human history because of the melting(融化) of the Arctic sea ice. Before this, the Arctic sea ice was very thick and strong. Boats couldn't pass through. The 55 year old Zhai hopes his sail will make more people care about climate change and the Arctic.
Zhai Mo's next plan is to sail around Antarctica next year.
