I clearly remember the day I walked into class with a big change — my very first pair of eye glasses and I was the first to wear glasses in my primary school. I was filled with excitement, eager to show them off to my friends. I had chosen pink framed glasses, thinking they would look fantastic on me.
I had never worn glasses before, so selecting them felt like a fun shopping experience. I got to pick the shape I liked and even chose a pretty pink and purple colour combination.
The reason behind getting the glasses was my poor eyesight. I couldn’t copy words and proper grammar from the blackboard because I sat at the back of the class, and everything was too vague for me to see. My friend would read aloud every phrase to me so that I could write them down, like a parrot.
Wearing those glasses was like stepping into a 3D cinematic world. I could see everything as clearly and each tiny detail felt like a delightful surprise.
However, on the day I wore my glasses to school, everyone’s reaction to my transformation was beyond my expectation. All the boys laughed and even teased me. Some kind-hearted girls forced a smile and told me that my glasses looked good on me, but I knew they didn’t. They all lied.
Though I needed those glasses more than I wanted them, yet I started to dislike my new glasses in the following week. A month passed, my classmates still weren’t used to seeing me in glasses and I took them off during the lunch break or when the classes were dismissed. However, little did I know that my decision to wear them would change the lives of many of my friends.

【答案】
One Monday, one of my friends looked at me with curiosity. Confused, I inquired about her fascination. She extended her hands and asked if she could try my glasses on, her eyes sparkling with expectation. Surprised as I was, I handed them to her without hesitation. She put them on, her jaw dropping in amazement. “Unbelievable! I can see the items in distance so clearly without narrowing my eyes!”she exclaimed. “That was exactly how I felt some time ago.” I identified with her, a secret smile flitting between us.
A week later, I was shocked to see the same friend return to school with a pair ofglasses. Sensing the surprised look on my face, she grinned, “Your new glasses showed me that I needed to get my eyes checked and wear glasses too.” With time ticking by, those with poor eyesight in the class started wearing glasses too, inspired by me. Never had I thought that I could make such a positive impact on my classmates. From then on, I needn’t worry about being teased with glasses on. What matters is that we can see the world more clearly.

Born into a medical family, Amar, a 15-year-old boy, was expected to be a doctor, but deep down in his heart, he was eager to take up writing as his future career. He was in a great dilemma whether to pursue his dream or live up to his parents’ expectation. until one day when his father gifted him a parrot.
The parrot had two hazy lines in her neck: black and red. Amar knew the hazy lines mark the stage of learning. “When there is a good teacher, how can his student be stupid” ,he used to believe. It was absolutely true.
Metto’s cage was yellow with a big door and a shiny silver rod (杆) running through the centre. Metto’s world was fantastic, surrounded by eight-foot white walls with some plum trees. And a lawn, with a palm tree in the middle, was dotted with multiple-color roses.
Back home from school every afternoon, Amar always slid the door of the cage up for Metto to set her free nearby the palm tree. Metto could set herself free because she learned how to slide up the door but she had never tried to do so. It was either love with Amar or, might be, she had never tasted the taste of a bigger world.
Amar always talked with Metto in Pashto (普什图语). Whenever Amar fished out peanuts from his pocket, Metto talked frequently “Toti choori khore” —parrot! Wanna eat choori. She had learned one more sentence after meeting with a friend belonging to jungle outside the white walls. She always said that at the end of meal “Da wakht bam teer she”—this shall to be passed, which Amar had never taught her.
Amar saw her friend coming daily and sitting in the plum tree nearby Metto’s cage. He let them and did nothing. “The new one can never succeed in winning her. After all, I feed her well. She will never leave me”, Amar murmured. But he didn’t know the new teacher had taught her something the old one hadn’t. It was the outer world with untouchable horizon.

【答案】One day, on the way to feed her, Amar was shocked at what Metto was doing. She slid up the door of the cage, stepped out and settled on the palm trees beside her jungle friend. Amar’s heart sank. He dashed toward them, reaching his hands out to attract Metto back. He called in anxiety, “Come back! Metto, back!” To his disappointment, Metto didn’t fly back on his arm as usual, but instead, took wing and flew away with her friend. Without hesitation, Amar chased them with all his strength but in vain. They finally disappeared in the woods. Realising he lost Metto forever, Amar stood still, looking blankly into the sky for long.
His head hanging down, Amar came back home after a long running. His heart still hurt. “If only I had locked the cage!” Amar thought to himself. Suddenly, he remembered Metto’s words “Da wakht bam teer she”— this shall to be passed. Strangely it eased his grief a bit. He began to realize Metto had taught him something important — the art of prioritizing things. “At last, he prioritized freedom over comfort.” He thought of his own life too. Then Amar decided to prioritize his dream and tell his parents.

Every morning, he sat quietly and motionless on the front steps of his house. His bright blue eyes seemed so distant and sad. Every morning, my daughter and I walked to her kindergarten and we passed his house. We were new to the neighbourhood, so I didn’t know many of my neighbours. On one beautiful morning, as we passed his house, my daughter joyfully called out to him, ‘Hi, Mr. Man!’ She was an outgoing girl, and I wasn’t surprised at her cheerfulness, but her enthusiasm soon faded when the man didn’t look at her or say ‘Hi’ back.
As we continued on our walk to school, my daughter curiously asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Stumbling for words, because I didn’t have the answer, I said simply, ‘Maybe he is having a bad day.’
Once back home, I washed the breakfast dishes, and I thought about ‘Mr. Man.’ What was his story Why did he seem so sad Determined to do something to cheer him up, I brainstormed a few ways to make his day a bit brighter, but nothing seemed special enough.
The next morning, after dropping my daughter off at school, I saw one of my other neighbours tending her front garden. After I introduced myself, she invited me in for a chat. She was a long-time resident of the neighbourhood, who knew everyone and everything. She was a bubbly personality, but when I asked her about the man who lived nearby, she grew serious. ‘Bob recently lost his wife in a car accident. He hasn’t been the same since.’
The following week seemed to fly by. I had talked to my daughter about what we could do to bring a smile to Mr. Man’s face.

【答案】With every suggestion I made, my daughter simply said ‘No, not that.’ Under my questioning, she spoke her own mind. She wanted to write an invitation to Bob this afternoon, inviting him to come over for the evening. I could make a nice dinner for him, and we could eat and talk with him as a family, so he wouldn’t be so sad and lonely. The happy atmosphere of the family can make people feel happiness from the bottom of their hearts. In the evening, when Bob came over for dinner with the family, it was a little awkward at first. Later, in our conversation and laughter, Bob laughed in delight. After dinner, we invited him to come over often. The next morning, we received a letter.
Inside, in perfect calligraphy, it simply read, ‘Thank you, from Mr. Man.’ When we opened the letter, we saw that it was written by Bob. We were happy because Bob had regained his hope for life. A month later, Bob came to our house with a gift. My family was very happy. Bob told us about his recent situation. He said it was my daughter cheerfulness and our family’s warm atmosphere that awoke him. He had begun to work hard and live happily. Later in that evening, my daughter said to me proudly, “Mom, we have brought a smile to Mr. Man’s face”. “Yes, we have made it.” I gently hugged her and smiled.

The school I went to had a tradition carried out every year during the eighth-grade graduation: a beautiful gold and green jacket (the school colors)was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for eight years.
I was fourteen and in the eighth grade. I had been a straight-A student since the first grade and this last year had looked forward very much to owning that jacket. My family was so poor that, when I was six, I was given to my grandparents to raise. I couldn’t participate in sports at school because we couldn’t afford the fees; even though I was quite athletic, there would never be a school sports jacket for me. So, this one, the scholarship jacket, was my only chance.
One day in May, close to graduation, outside the history teacher’s classroom, I heard a fierce argument between the principal and my history teacher, Mr. Frank, about giving the scholarship jacket to Joann, whose father is on the Board and owns the only store in town. Frank angrily claimed that he would never lie or falsify(伪造) records.
The principal approached me tentatively: “Martha, there’s been a change in policy this year. The Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars for the scholarship jacket this year. So if you are unable to pay the fifteen dollars for the jacket it will be given to the next one in line. Staring at him in shock, I didn’t need to ask who that was.
”I’ll speak to my grandfather and let you know tomorrow, I gathered all the dignity. I cried on the walk home from the bus stop. I wanted that jacket so much. It represented eight years of hard work and expectation.

【答案】范文一
Upon arriving home, I told my grandpa what had happened. A look of anxiety flashed across his face, his eyebrows knitted into a deep frown. I could see him struggling with the decision, knowing how much the jacket meant to me but also aware of our financial limitations. After a long silence, he said in a firm voice, “Martha, it’s not just a jacket; it’s a symbol of your hard work.” He reached into an old tin can he kept hidden under his bed, pulling out a few crumpled bills and some coins.” Take this,“ he placed the money in my hand.”You deserve that jacket more than anyone.“
The next day, the principal called me to his office. As I entered, I noticed his expression, a mixture of guilt and embarrassment. “Martha,” he began, “I need to apologize.” He paused, looking down at his desk before continuing,” Your history teacher, Mr. Frank, made a convincing argument about the unfairness of the situation. The Board agreed; the jacket should be awarded based on one’s academic performance, not on one’s ability to pay. “Relief and joy washed over me. My hard work hadn’t been in vain, and my grandfather’s sacrifice wasn’t needed. The scholarship jacket was truly mine, a symbol of my perseverance and the unyielding support of my family.
范文二
Upon arriving home, I told my grandpa what had happened. He cleared his throat and asked seriously,” What does a scholarship jacket mean ” I told him the symbolic value of the jacket and emphasized how much it meant to me, almost with a begging tone. However, Grandpa wasn’t sold and instead replied with a firm no. “Then if you pay for it, Martha, it’s not a scholarship jacket, is it Tell your principal I will not pay the fifteen dollars.” Disappointed and frustrated, I rushed to my bedroom and locked myself sobbing for a long time.
The next day, the principal called me to his office. I told him Grandfather was not willing to pay, “He said if I had to pay for it, it wouldn’t be a scholarship jacket. I guess you’ll just have to give it to Joann.” I could feel my heart pounding wildly and something bitter coming up in my mouth. He sighed loudly and watched me, biting his lip. “Okay. We’ll make an exception in your case. I’ll tell the Board; you’ll get your jacket. “I could hardly believe my ears.” Thank you, sir! “I dashed back home to tell Grandpa the good news. He somehow didn’t seem much surprised; he just gave me a pat on the shoulder and a smile,” Now that’s a worthy scholarship jacket.”

Rudi Gonsalves could barely contain his excitement as he sped downhill. It was the first day of his holiday in the Romanian ski resort of Poiana Brasov and he was 6,000 feet up one of its highest mountains, breathing in the cleanest air.
Weather and snow conditions were perfect. An experienced skier, he tackled the difficult “black” run with ease, knees gently bent to meet the uneven surface of the snow.
Rudi, a part-time youth worker from Epsom Downs, Surrey, regularly booked a winter holiday with his wife Sue. But Sue was scared of heights and could not overcome her sense of foreboding as the skiing season approached.
So this time Rudi, a keen sportsman and fit for his 57 years, had come alone.
As he snaked his way down the mountain on that March afternoon last year, snowflakes began to fall—lightly at first, then more heavily until the clouds blotted out the sun entirely, transforming everything into a ghostly whiteness.
He could just make out other skiers descending the slopes as fast as they could. I’d better stay close to them for safety, he decided. This could be tricky.
Straining to see ahead, Rudi was only vaguely aware of a looming outline lumbering up the mountain.
“Did anyone see me fall Where am I ”
He looked around him, trying to get his bearings, but in every direction there was only the same vast whiteness.
Then he took out his gold watch, a treasured present from his wife. It not only told him the time, 1.54pm, it also seemed to give him strength.
It was getting dark when Rudi finally gave up his attempt to scale the mountain and decided to head downhill instead. He knew it would mean moving away from the best route back to his hotel, but there seemed to be no alternative.
Despair began to dog Rudi as he faced up to the reality of spending a night in the open. It was 5.30 pm and the temperature was dropping fast. He began to shiver, his teeth chattering uncontrollably. He felt very alone.

【答案】参考范文:
After three hours he was very tired, colder than he had ever felt. Hunger and thirst wore away his stomach. Using a ski as a spade, he spent half an hour scraping away the snow beneath the branch until he reached the drier soil below. To protect himself further, he used the dislodged snow to build walls for his new home. Then he stabbed around with his ski pole, collecting fallen branches for a fire and burning his two spare hats and all his Romanian paper money to kindle the flames. He didn’t dare fall asleep for fear that he might never wake up. For six hours he sat listening, hoping to hear someone calling him or to see some lights, until, dizzy and exhausted, he collapsed on to a well-used country lane.
He was barely aware of two horses drawing a wagon along the lane towards him. A weather-beaten driver loaded him into the cart and took him to his farmhouse. There Rudi, drifting in and out of consciousness, felt himself being lifted out by farm workers. But even when someone cut away his ski boots and socks, he could not feel his hands or feet. The Romanians could see that his toes and fingers were black from frost-bite. His rescuers revived him with three bowls of milk. “You saved my life,” he managed to say, his speech slow and painful. The farmer, who understood more English than he could speak, nodded and grinned, before driving him to his hotel, which was about 45 miles away. Rudi knew it was more than luck and a stranger’s kindness that kept him alive through the dilemma.

What should have been a regular Sunday at the YMCA turned into a day one teenage lifeguard will never forget!
Eighteen-year-old Natalie Lucas has been working as a lifeguard at the YMCA in Longmont, Colorado, for the past three years. Recently, a couple entered the pool area while she was on duty. The woman was very pregnant, so Natalie kept a close eye on her as she eased herself into the shallow end of the pool.
Tessa Rider was nine months pregnant that day. She and her husband, Matthew Jones, came to the pool a few times that week to ease the discomfort of a nerve pain.
As Tessa was resting in the pool, she suddenly realized something was happening. Natalie noticed Tessa climbed out of the pool, so she went over to check on the couple. “I walk over and Matthew, the husband, says to me, ‘We’re having the baby right now.’ I’m like, ‘OK!’” Natalie recalled.
Matthew called 911, but as he spoke to the operator he knew it was too late. Tessa was already pulling her bathing suit off. Natalie helped Tessa and Matthew by bringing over the center’s medical supplies and towels, and calling for more assistance from the front desk. Throughout it all, she told herself to remain calm and focus on caring for Tessa.
“I knew I needed to stay calm,” Natalie said. “So I made sure to keep my head on and stay with them, keep asking them questions, and keep them focused on the baby and made sure that they were the most comfortable.”
Less than five minutes later, Matthew caught his newborn son as he was born on the pool edge.
After helping clear the baby’s airway and ensuring he was breathing, Natalie used her back to support the new mom until paramedic (护理员) arrived. Once there, baby Tobin Thomas Rider received a clean bill of health!

【答案】One possible version:
Matthew and Tessa are both grateful that Natalie was there to help them. They thought they were in great need of an extra set of hands at that moment. Matthew said Natalie was super focused on Tessa so that he did not have to worry about his wife. Without Natalie there, he wouldn’t have been able to give his attention to Tobin. “She was there to do anything we asked,” said Tessa. “And the first thing I thought of was that someone could hold my back up. And she did. It was perfect.”
Natalie said Tobin’s unexpected birth was all just part of her job. The teen, who’s getting ready to head off to college in the fall, says, “I just did what I was supposed to do in that situation. I’m a lifeguard. It was the first time I’d had to help bring life into the world, rather than just prevent death.” Undoubtedly, the whole experience made an impression on her and she planned on sending birthday cards to Tobin. Both Natalie and the couple plan to stay in touch. They’re definitely bonded for life after this unforgettable experience.

For many, an act of kindness is its own reward. But Eva Hachey found her selflessness answered in ways she could never have imagined.
For weeks, Eva Hachey had imagined adopting a golden Chihuahua with a white spot on its forehead. And there he was, at her local SPCA in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The dog had been abused by his previous owners and was timid. “He’d come to me, then back away and growl, then come back to me,” Hachey said. “After 15 minutes, the attendant picked him up and put him in my lap. He started giving me kisses. He stole my heart in that moment.” She adopted the ten-month-old puppy on the spot and named him Bruno.
Bruno lived happily with Hachey and her 35-year-old daughter, Angel Hutchinson, for five months. Then, on the evening of September 26, 2016, Hachey, 52 at the time, returned home as usual at 8 p. m. from her job as a chiropractic assistant and office manager. And as usual, she ate supper in front of the TV in the living room. Around 10: 30, a friend called, just as Bruno went into Hutchinson’s room to go to sleep for the night. Hachey and her friend chatted a bit, and as Hachey hung up, she noticed the time was 11: 08.
“The next thing I remember was a male voice saying, ‘Eva, Eva, wake up.’ It was an emergency doctor,” said Hachey. “I looked around, and the room was just full of people. And I said, ‘What are you doing in my house ’”
What they were doing was saving her life. By the time Hachey had hung up with her friend, Hutchinson was fast asleep in her bedroom and Bruno was in his usual spot next to her under the blankets. Hachey believed Bruno heard something odd then and possibly went to the living room to investigate.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Unexpectedly, Bruno ran back to the bedroom and tried every means to awaken Hutchinson. He barked and jumped on and off the bed. When that didn’t work, he attacked Hutchinson’s fleshy skin between her fingers. Finally, Hutchinson woke up and was immediately led into the living room, only to discover Hatchey passed out in the chair. She had almost stopped breathing and was apparently in danger. Without hesitation, Hutchson lifted her head up so her mother could breathe, and dialed 911 on her cell. The ambulance finally arrived and Hatchey was rushed to the hospital. It turned out that she suffered a stroke and would have died without the quick response.
A year later, Hachey finally fully recovered. Recalling the experience, she was convinced that being found so quickly after the attack was the key factor in helping her survive. She owed it to Bruno, saying that it was he that saved her life. “I never imagined he would save my life when I adopted him. I do believe the animal will pick us and I am lucky he chose me. ” Hatchey gazed at Bruno and stroked his fur gently, smiling contentedly. Any act of kindness is its own reward, no matter how small it seems.

“No!” screamed Asha as she saw a huge pimple (粉刺) on her nose. She didn’t have time to cover the pimple as she was running late to school. She ate her breakfast fast, grabbed her bag and caught her school bus just in time. As soon as she got on the bus, kids started laughing. Nobody was willing to let her sit beside them. Even Anita, her best friend, acted a bit differently, which made her more upset.
Asha was lost in thought. A new thought popped in her mind every second. Once she thought “Great! I have to worry about my pimple as if homework and exams were not enough.” The next minute another thought popped in her mind.“I am tired of using this face wash. I still wonder how I agreed to use that thing!” Then suddenly, Mr. Shetty, the bus driver, said, “Asha, do you want to miss the class ” Asha was so lost in her thought that she did not even notice that everybody had got off the bus except her.
She did not want to step into the school campus. She thought, “What will my teachers think What will my friends think ” After some time, she gathered courage and entered her class, expecting that she would be laughed at. While entering the class, she heard students commenting on her pimple. A child laughed, “Look, someone’s cherry is on her nose! Get it for me.” She heard some boys murmuring, “She would definitely be chosen as the joker in the dance.”

A few days before my fiftieth birthday, I experienced a bad brain injury. At the time, I was a long-distance runner, and sports had always helped me deal with my-life-long depression. But depression after a brain injury became severer, and I needed something new in my life.
So at the age of fifty, depressed and brain-injured, I did what many women would do: learning the circus (马戏表演). I was athletic as an adult but not as a kid, and I had never taken dance lessons or gymnastics. I was strong, but neither very flexible nor graceful in the least.
Since the beginning of my severer depression, I had kept to myself. I took time away from work, my social circle became much smaller, and I felt very alone. I was often afraid to leave the house. Even booking my first circus class was a leap in the dark (冒险之举) for me.
When I walked into my first circus class, I wasn’t surprised to find I was the oldest student; in fact, even my teachers were young enough to be my daughters! But I was determined to stretch beyond my comfort zone, and the “kids” welcomed me. One of my classmates said to me, “Wow, my mom would never do this!”
After a group stretch and warm-up, my coach Katelyn told us that weeks after finishing the course, there would be a student performance. All students would be invited to give a performance, showing what they had learned in class. And all the performers’ family members and friends would be invited to watch. I felt worried.
After talking about that performance, the coach asked which equipment I’d like to learn. There were silks, trapezes and the aerial hoop (空中吊环). I eyed the aerial hoop, Oh, how I wanted to sit up in the hoop and learn to fly like a bird! But I didn’t have the arm strength to lift myself up onto the hoop. I was discouraged. My excitement was replaced with self-doubt and disappointment.

【答案】When I expressed my upset to my coach, she smiled and said, “Just keep trying!” For three weeks, I tried, and I got better and stronger. Then it happened. I managed to pull myself up onto the hoop. The entire class clapped! I was motivated and continued learning the aerial hoop and new tricks. During it, I made new friends there and developed great flexibility even at the age of fifty. Several weeks after the course, the big event came.
When my name was called, I stood up, confidently walking to the stage. As I waited for the first notes of my musical accompaniment, I surveyed the room and saw my coach, my classmates, my brother and my husband… I gave my performance easily and gracefully. The audience cheered and clapped so enthusiastically. I felt so excited and proud. In the following weeks, I eventually got over my depression. And though brain-injured and not young, I became a professional circus performer.

My best friend, Cocoa, and I live in a senior-citizen apartment complex in a lovely small town. Cocoa is a ten-year-old poodle(卷毛狗) and I am a sixty-nine-year-old lady, so you can see we both qualify as senior citizens.
Years ago, I promised myself that when I retired I would get a chocolate poodle to share my golden years. From the very beginning, Cocoa has always been exceptionally well-behaved. I never have to tell him anything more than once. He is extremely neat—when taking toys from his box to play, he always puts them back when he is finished. I have been accused of being obsessively neat, and sometimes I wonder if he mimics me or if he was born that way, too.
He is a wonderful companion. When I throw a ball for him, he picks it up in his mouth and gives it back to me. He does many amusing things that make me laugh, and when that happens, he is so delighted that he just keeps it up. I enjoy his company very much.
But almost two years ago, Cocoa did something that challenged comprehension. Was it a miracle or a coincidence It is certainly a mystery.
One afternoon, Cocoa started acting strangely. I was sitting on the floor playing with him when he started pawing and sniffing at the right side of my chest. He had never done anything like this before, and I told him, “No.” Usually, one “no” is sufficient, but not that day. He stopped briefly, then suddenly ran toward me from the other side of the room, throwing his entire weight—eighteen pounds—at the right side of my chest. He crashed into me and I yelled in pain. It hurt more than I thought it would have.
Soon after this, I felt a lump (肿瘤). I went to the doctors, and after X-rays, tests and lab work were done, they told me I had cancer.

When cancer starts, a wall of calcium(钙) builds to which the lump or cancer attaches itself.

Was Cocoa just aware of what he was doing
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
When cancer starts, a wall of calcium(钙) builds to which the lump or cancer attaches itself. This is known as calcification. It is believed that calcium acts as a protective barrier that isolates the cancerous cells from the surrounding tissues. Cocoa’s strange behavior that day, pawing and sniffing at the right side of my chest, could have been a response to the changes happening in my body. Animals, especially dogs, have an incredible sense of smell and can detect subtle changes in our body odors. It is possible that Cocoa could sense the presence of the cancerous cells even before any physical symptoms or pain appeared.
Was Cocoa just aware of what he was doing I believe so. Cocoa’s actions that day were extraordinary. He not only detected the presence of cancer but also tried to draw my attention to it by pawing and crashing into me. His behavior was a clear gesture of concern and protection. Cocoa’s intervention ultimately led to my early detection and treatment, and this incident made me reflect on the unique bond that humans share with their pets. And I will forever be grateful for having such a caring and perceptive companion by my side.

“I challenge you to a hundred-meter race,” my opponent, Julius, declared. He had beaten me countless times during practice, but I wanted to prove him wrong for a change. “That’ll wipe the smile off his face!” I thought, even as fear started to pool in my stomach. He was well-known around the school for being the fastest runner on the track-and-field team, while I tailed behind in second place- a respectable position, but not yet good enough to surpass(超过)him. Nevertheless, I shook his hand and said, “Challenge accepted!” However, negative thoughts flooded my mind. Would I be able to win After all, Julius’ speed of light would guarantee a sure win!
Soon, all my friends and the teachers had gathered around to watch the challenge. “Oh no, I will lose and be embarrassed in front of the whole school!” I spoke in a low voice. Nevertheless, I turned my worried expression into a determined smile. To keep myself from sinking into self-doubt, I did some stretches and jumping jacks to warm up my body.
Finally, the crucial moment arrived. The referee(裁判)fired the starting gun and we took off like a shot. Adrenaline(肾上腺素) rocketed through my body as I launched myself forward. True to my expectations, Julius caught up with me easily and was in the lead! “No way will I lose! Victory, here I come!” I motivated myself as anger coursed through my body. As the race progressed, my eyes locked onto Julius, his athletic form effortlessly moving ahead. His quick steps and strong focus showcased his impressive skills. Yet, I refused to let doubt consume me. A fierce fire burnt within, fueled by a mix of unwillingness to admit defeat and anger. How dare he assume he was unbeatable With every step, my determination solidified(变坚定), and my resolve to surpass him strengthened.

Using my last ounce of energy, I raced past Julius! For the first time, I had passed the finishing line before Julius! Drops of sweat rolled down my cheeks, mixing with the intense expression on my face. This was not just a race – it was a representation of my willpower, a proof of the depths of my resolve.
“Yi Rou! Yi Rou! Yi Rou!” The whole school was cheering my name! I stood there excited. Julius, out of breath, reached out to shake my hand. “That was a brilliant race! I was so tired that all I managed to do was smile at them. “Thank you for all the support! It really was a challenge!”

In DeAnza Community College, 15 minutes’ drive from the university Trevor Wallace studied in, his beloved grandmother had worked there. When she was alive, she was a respected learning disabilities specialist and instructor. In recognition of her work, her co-workers dedicated a large, cement angel fountain with a plaque (匾) saying Heart’s Garden: In Memory of Marilyn Rosenthal. That was in 1999.
Trevor knew well that the fountain meant a lot to his mom, Sarene. She was only 36 when her mom died. At the sight of anything to do with her mother, she would tell stories or anecdotes related, especially the fountain. Though she cherished it, living six hours away, she didn’t have the opportunity to visit it regularly.
As time went on, the fountain was hidden under trees, falling into disrepair----the statue’s bowl at its base broken; cement benches nearby damaged; the water pump blocked with leaves and the surrounding area littered with dead leaves and trash, etc.
Finally, in 2013, it was once repaired by one of the school gatekeepers, who thought she was popular with colleagues and students when she was alive. After knowing the repair, Sarene and Trevor took the 300-mile trip to visit it. On a quiet afternoon, they posed for a photo together. Sarene recalled, “We sat watching the fountain for a while. The water welled over then it went into the bowls. It was so peaceful.”
Flash forward to 2015. When deciding what to give his mom for Mother’s Day, the fountain came to mind. Trevor called Sarene that Sunday to wish her a happy Mother’s Day and told her to expect a surprise. Then he drove to DeAnza with his camera, tripod, and two sponges.
When he arrived, the fountain was covered with leaves and piled with dirt, in worse shape than he had expected. Motivated by memories of his late grandmother, whom he called “Bubby”, he set up his camera on the tripod, checked the lighting and took a before shot. Then his hand-scrubbing (手工擦洗) work began.

I faced a tight budget when I was nine. On November Ist, I used up most of the money I saved. With a small amount of pocket money left before Christmas I didn’t have enough to buy presents for the family.
I was seriously considering going to my dad and asking for an advance on the next year’s pocket money, so I could at least buy gifts for my family members. But then, one evening, I was sitting in my room reading advertisements in the back of a magazine. Several greeting-card companies were telling us how people could make money by selling their cards and stationery (文具). Normally, I would have passed right over the ads, but this time my situation was so difficult that I felt I had nothing to lose.
The ad that attracted me most was one by a well-known greeting-card company in my nation, whose products were of high quality. With my parents’ help, I contacted the company, although they preferred adults or older kids to advertise their products. After my sincere request, they agreed to give me, a nine-year-old boy, a chance.
My sales materials arrived within the week. I had expected something small and neat, but the package looked like a dinosaur’s shoebox it was close to three feet long and nearly a foot wide, full of stuff. There was a thick binder (活页夹) containing a complete selection of the cards and some writing paper, which I would be selling for around $3 per box.
Although my parents supported my try to make money by myself, they had little confidence in my success; after all, instead of an outgoing kid, I was somewhat shy. However, I was determined to have a try to challenge myself.

Several years ago, I worked as a writing teacher in a rural middle school. I knew all my students. They trusted me with their stories and so I was given the privilege of having a secret bond with each one of them. I taught my students about the power of words, and tried to let them find expression through writing. We learned to trust each other, because we learned how hard it was to write openly and honestly, and we learned sharing your words took courage. I was always amazed at the words that came from my students’ hearts.
Later, we had a new student to the school, Al. Al was small and looked younger than other students in my class. He was with us for only a short while and still trying to fit in. So I was a little surprised when he volunteered to read. I smiled and nodded for him to do, while in my mind I was afraid that the others would make fun of the new kid after he read. The room fell silent, and Al began to read.
“If I had one wish, it would be to meet my dad...” He started out loud and clear.
He had held the attention of my usually restless students for what seemed like 15 minutes. He told of how he had never known his father, who had left the family when he was a baby. He shared the intimate details of his struggles to be the only man in the house at such a young age, of having to mow the lawn and fix broken pipes. He revealed to us the thoughts that went through his mind constantly about where his father might be and why he might have left.

When we were finally dismissed from the last class of the day, the students streamed out of the classrooms. It was another boring day after school. I dragged my feet home as I sighed. Yet another uneventful day, I thought. Little did I know that the day would take a turn for the worse.
The lift lobby (电梯间) of my flat was old and dirty. The walls, which were painted white, had been dirtied over many years. I reached my flat’s lobby, and pressed the lift button and went in. Just then, Mrs Lim, my elderly neighbour, hobbled (蹒跚) in. She looked ancient with tissue paper white hair, wearing a faded old-fashioned dress. I held the lift door open, flashing a friendly smile, and politely greeted her. I asked her how she felt that day and pressed the buttons. She thanked me for being so polite, then we were silent for the rest of the ride.
The lift fell down increasingly fast. There were loud clanking sounds here and there while the lift grew slower and slower. My heart beat hard and fast as my hands turned cold and wet with sweat. Unfortunately, the lift came to an abrupt stop at the fifth floor. I pressed the buttons hard several times, but it was of no help. The lights on the buttons had gone out. It soon dawned on me that we were trapped. An icy fear crept up my spine. Mrs Lim was hysterical (歇斯底里).
“We will never get out!” she cried with her face pale. It had become a colourless mask. I had no time to lose. I pressed the bell in the lift immediately. The sound was surely deafening, but what other choice did I have Mrs Lim burst into tears. I tried my very best to comfort her, telling her that everything would be all right and that we needed to find out how to get out safely. Mrs Lim began having trouble breathing, and I immediately helped her sit down and loosened her collar.

I stared at myself in the mirror: blue tights, yellow vest, an aquamarine fish tail trailing behind me, and large googly eyes (sitting atop my head. I raised my eyebrows quizzically at my mom with uncertainty about this costume. Mom ensured that she followed the pattern exactly. “Maybe the makeup will add something,” Mom said hopefully. I sighed and looked back at the mirror. Somehow Mom had convinced me to do a play this summer. So here I was about to play the Fish Footman (鱼仆人) in the local community theater production of Alice in Wonderland. I can’t say it’s been the time of my life. Actually, I even wanted to withdraw from the play.
“Well, there’s no turning back now,” she said. “You’ve been rehearsing (彩排) for two months. I couldn’t be prouder-of you.” She gave me an encouraging anile, pulling me in for a fierce hug. I had to admit: Mom’s hugs are the best. But despite that, I felt u knot in the pit of my stomach that got worse as the hour of opening night drew nearer.
That day I followed Mom to the backstage of the theater, wearing the questionable costume. I shrank inside myself, but Mom pulled me toward the makeup table. When my makeup artist had set down her last makeup brush and Mom led me over to a mirror, my jaw dropped. A mass of blue spread from my forehead down my nose, and lime green circles bubbled over my cheeks.
“Mom! I can’t go out on stage like this!” I cried. “I’d be a laughing stock!”
“Riley! This is Alice in Wonderland. You’re not the only one in an odd costume. I’m going to watch you go out on that stage tonight. She turned away to leave, but then leaned down and kissed me on the forehead.” I love you, honey. And she went away.
Tears filled my eyes as chaos closed in around me. It felt like I stood there alone for hours, but in reality it was more like ten minutes before the assistant stage manager came in and called my name.

I was at the back of a group of eight horse riders when one of my fellow safari (观兽旅行) camp guides called my name, nodding to the spot behind me. I turned to see a male lion, fully grown, not 10 metres away.
I’d been working as a guide at the safari camp in Botswana for a year and had seen lions a few times, usually in the heat of the day. Guests paid to come on guided rides between tented camps 20 miles apart. It was a very remote area. We left at 7 am that morning; it was three hours later when the lion appeared.
Just as I saw it, the horses ran wildly, leaving riders hanging on as the lion began its chase (追逐). I wasn’t in control of my horse, Acaba, which was heading into a much thicker bush, away from the path and the rest of the group. I realised that the lion had chosen to drive Acaba away from the others.
I thought we were going to die together. I screamed in pure panic. Suddenly, Acaba ran into a really thick bush and stopped without control, throwing me into a bush. By the time I got myself out of the low woody plants, the lion was killing him.
Unbelievable! Acaba hid me in the bushes and left himself in extreme danger! It protected me! Scared... shocked... moved... my mind went blank. I was only two metres away! Acaba was on the ground, feet in front of him. He tried to push himself up. But the lion was on top of him, covering his body entirely, his front feet around Acaba’s neck.
I seized a device hanging around my neck, which is known as a bear banger. It has a spring, and when you pull the trigger (扳机) the spring fires off containers that explode when they land. It’s like a small firework but as loud as a shotgun.
Somehow my panic died down. I found myself moving closer to Acaba and the lion.

Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but that doesn’t mean they can’t still be wonderful in their own way. My parents and I had spent forever researching summer camps online. Finally, we picked out one where I could design games, animate (制作动画) characters, and learn other cool coding (编程) stuff.
My mom said, “I like the idea of you exercising that clever brain of yours. But I also want you to get plenty of fresh air.” “Campers can choose to hike or swim every afternoon!” I said, as I clicked on the registration form.
My dad filled out the form, and weeks later, my parents dropped me off for what I thought would be a week of nonstop computer-coding fun.
I arrived at the check-in table at the same time as a camper of my age named Halley, who was wearing an adorable sunhat. Halley greeted, “We are in the same group - number 7.” Led by an advisor, we followed the green arrows to the campsite.
I surprisedly found that it was so cool and woodsy along the path. I exchanged ideas with Halley about what might come out of the camp. Halley excitedly mentioned the little animals he loved to observe and something about night sky watching.
“You gave me the best idea,” I said. “I’ll base my characters on the animals you mentioned!” Halley laughed. “I might be missing something here. Who are these mysterious characters ”
“You know, the characters we’ll be designing and animating on computers this week!” I said. “Uh, sorry. Still lost,” said Halley. “Why would we be doing computer stuff at Nature Camp ”
It was then that I realised some errors must have been made. I must have accidentally clicked on the wrong online form! We immediately raced back to the welcome table to see if I could switch over to Tech Camp, but of course it was completely full.

It was my tenth birthday—double digits—which would be a big day for me, and I would have the biggest party ever. The guest list, which I kept at the back of my homework assignment folder, began with a few close friends. But in the two weeks before that special Friday night, it had quickly grown from seven girls to a large total of seventeen. Nearly every girl in my fifth-grade class had been invited to sleep over at my house for a big celebration. I was especially happy when each guest I invited excitedly accepted the invitation. I couldn’t wait! It would be a night of scary stories, funny games, pizza and lots of presents, which would be a happy paradise (天堂) for kids. Who could resist it
But as I later realized, I would truly treasure only one gift I received that night.
The big night finally came. Every friend invited came to my house on time. We kept dancing, singing, talking loudly and playing all pop games. As you could imagine, my family room was full of crazy shouts and bursts of laughter. We had just finished a game of Twister and were lining up for the limbo (林波舞)when the doorbell rang suddenly. I hardly paid attention to who might be at the door. What did it matter Who cared Everyone I liked from school was there, in my family room, preparing for the game —to lean under the stick held by my two sisters.
“Judy, come here for a minute,” Mom answered the door and called loudly from the front door.
I hated to be interrupted. I rolled my eyes and shrugged to my friends as if to say, “Now who would dare bother me at a time like this ” What I really wanted to say was, “It’s tough being popular!”

Kevin woke to the blaring beep of his alarm clock. “Can’t wait for that camping trip,” Kevin thought, filled with excitement. As he was leaving home, his dad grabbed him by the hand and said, “Before you go, just tell me the directions on where you and your friends are going to stay.”
“But dad!” Kevin complained.
“No buts!” Kevin’s dad added.
“Fine.” Kevin told him the directions and left.
The three friends, Kevin, Jay and Nathan, had been planning this adventure for weeks, packing their stuff-tents, snacks, and a map-preparing for a 3-day outdoor exploration. Excitement ran through Kevin as they departed for their campsite. “This trip is going to be awesome, ” Nathan excitedly yelled as they set off. But little did they know that nature had a surprise in store for them.
The first day at the campsite was going great, setting up tents, collecting firewood, and sharing stories. “Man, we nailed these tents, ” Kevin said. “I know it was easy really,” Nathan replied. The friends were happy.
Yet towards night, as the dark clouds gathered overhead, the atmosphere shifted, and a sudden storm erupted with unforgiving anger. Rain poured down from the heavens like a relentless waterfall, transforming the peaceful campsite into a muddy battleground. Worse still, a huge tree was uprooted and crashed down with a deafening crack on their only means of escape - their car. Kevin’s eyes widened in horror as he spotted the damaged wreckage beneath the fallen giant. “Our car!” he screamed over the howling wind, his voice a mix of disbelief and despair. “We’re stuck here,” he declared, his words barely audible against the backdrop of thunder and raindrops. They realized that their plans had been violently spoiled by forces beyond their control. The once quiet campsite now stood as a deserted battlefield, the fallen tree serving as a painful reminder of the unpredictable nature of the world around them.
