Kristina Wegscheider from the USA first travelled alone when she was at college. She believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their lives. The experience of travelling alone is educational and meaningful.Kristina says, “It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone. ”
In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go travelling last year. He visited the Great Barrier Reef(大堡礁) and Sydney Opera House. A month later, he came back home. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to record his adventures.“The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person, ” said the 30-year-old man. After years of travelling, He even wrote a book about his trip.
Richardson thought travelling alone made him a more confident person that was ready to deal with anything. He said, “The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I'm dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know that nothing is impossible if I try. I can become more confident after it. ”He plans to take a trip to China next time.
The great 19th century explorer John Muir from Scotland once said, “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness. ”

Historic England, which looked after England's historic buildings, raised money for archaeologists(考古学家) to dig the remains(遗迹) in September this year. Archaeologists found a mosaic that was 11 metres long and 7 metres wide. ② It can date back to the late Roman period. It was part of a house. The archaeologists believed that the mosaic meant a lot.
The archaeologists covered the mosaic with the earth to keep it safe. And it has been considered as a useful place and will get special protection from the government.
While digging the mosaic, the archaeologists also dug up human remains that date back to a little later period. It is thought that they are from the late 4th century or early 5th century, a period that historians know little about.
Duncan Wilson, head of Historic England, said, “Discoveries like this are so significant. They play a great role in getting our shared history together.”④ Irvine said, “A walk through the fields with the family turned into an unbelievable discovery.”

Recently a piece of news about Egyptian Pharaoh(法老) Amenhotep Ⅰ was reported. The perfectly preserved mummified(木乃伊的) body of this Egyptian Pharaoh has been seen for the first time in centuries. In the past,
语篇类型:说明文 主题:人与社会·埃及法老蒙霍特普一世 难度: 词数:344 用时:7分钟
researchers refused to uncover this Pharaoh's body because of its beautiful decoration and life-like face-mask with colourful stones. However, thanks to new CT scanning technology, the body has been able to be scanned, which gives the researchers a look behind the layers of wrapping(包裹).
Under the layers of wrapping, which included flower garlands, researchers were able to find out some unknown details about his appearance and other things about him. Dr Sahar Saleem, the professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University said, “We know that Amenhotep Ⅰ was about 35 years old when he died. He was about 169 cm tall, and had good teeth. Amenhotep Ⅰ seemed to have a similar appearance to his father. He had a narrow chin, a small narrow nose and curly hair. ”
Researchers also knew from decoded hieroglyphics that the mummy had been opened once in the 11th century BC. It was more than four centuries after his first mummification and wrapping. But it was believed the priests(牧师) did so to both repair the damage done by grave robbers and to reuse decoration in the mummy. However, some findings proved those were not true.
Dr Sahar Saleem added, “This fact that Amenhotep Ⅰ's mummy had never been opened in modern times gave us a unique chance. We shouldn't only study why he had been opened and reburied, but also how he had been treated and reburied twice centuries after his death. ”
Amenhotep Ⅰ ruled from about 1525 to 1504 BC and was first discovered in 1881 at a site in Deir-el-Bahari in southern Egypt. There are a lot of secrets among the mummy of Amenhotep Ⅰ and researchers are looking forward to finding them out.
