  After an earthquake happens, most researchers can quickly tell the time, place, magnitude(震级) and depth of the earthquake to people. However, they often don't include the focal mechanism parameters(震源机制参数), which can be used to find the possible areas of strong aftershocks. This information is very important. “It takes three to ten minutes for other countries to give out earthquake focal mechanism parameters, but by this time,
the earthquake has fully happened and the damage has been done,” Zhu said. “This new system can provide the focal mechanism parameters within just one second and release the information before the aftershocks reach some areas. Then people in those areas could get enough preparation and avoid too much hurt.”
  “If we are able to receive the warning information three seconds before an earthquake happens, we will be able to reduce casualties(伤亡人数) by 14 percent. With 10 seconds earlier, casualties can be reduced by 39 percent. The AI system is of great use for people to run away from the earthquake, ” Zhu said.
  This improvement is possible thanks to a deep learning method. The system is trained with millions of earthquake examples. It's now being tested in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces.
