Analysis of the students The students are from Grade 8. The characteristics of the them are obvious. They are full of passion and curiosity. But it is a pity that they don’t want to express themselves for the lack of confidence.
Analysis on the Teaching Materials This lesson is from Module 6 Unit1 ,the second term of Grade 8 . The topic is about hobbies related to the Man and Self(人与自我) . Many students have hobbies and also they are interested in others' hobbies , so they will be interested in this topic.
Teaching Objectives After this class , the students will be able to: Knowledge objective: 1. Master the following words and phrases: person,interest,skill,activity,sailing, come out, result, as a result, pleasure, success Ability objectives: Understand the passage about hobbies . Talk and write about one’s hobbies . Moral objectives: Listen to others’ opinion on hobbies, then care about and learn from others’ hobbies. Realize the importance of hobbies and cultivate some good hobbies.
Teaching Focuses To get students understand the passage about hobbies. To get the students talk and write about one’s hobbies.
Difficulties To get the students talk and write about one’s hobbies.

Teaching Procedures
Activities Purposes
Step 1: Leading-in& Pre-reading (4 mins) The teacher makes a self-introduction about his / her hobbies. Ask students what their hobbies are and ask them to use some words to describe their hobbies to lead in David’s hobbies. To get students know the teacher’s hobbies and how the teacher’s hobby influences his / her life. To activate students background knowledge about hobby and arouse students’ interest.
S Step 2: While Reading (10 mins) ( Task 1:Fast reading (3 minutes) Ask students to skim the passage and get the main idea of the passage and each paragraph. To train students’ skill of catching the central message while skimming and get students know the main idea of each paragraph and the structure of the passage.
Task 2: Careful reading (7 minutes) Ask students to read paragraph 1 and fill in the blanks what advantages can hobbies bring to young people. Ask students to read paragraph 2 and complete the table. Ask students to read paragraph 3 and finish the mind map . Ask students to read paragraph 4 and answer the questions. To train students’ skill of catching the details and get students know the advantages of hobbies for young people. To train students’ skill of scanning and get students know more about David’s special hobby. To train students’ skill of scanning and get students know how David became a successful writer. To train students’ skill of scanning and get students know David’s other hobbies and what advantages his hobby has brought to him.
SStep 3: Post reading (8 mins) Ask students to watch a video clip and then read aloud. Ask students to retell the passage with the help of mind map. To get the students have a clear idea of the structure and the key information of the passage. 2. To train students’ skill of retelling and strengthen students’ knowledge of the passage.
pStep4: Pre-writing (3 mins) Ask students to figure out how David became a successful writer. Ask students to figure out a mind map of introducing hobbies. To get students know how to write the process of developing a hobby and the importance of a hobby. To get the students brainstorm the advantages of their hobbies and how they developed their hobbies and get them ready for the writing.
Step 5 While-writing (12 mins) Ask students to write a composition according to the mind map. To let students apply what they have learned in this lesson to write a passage about hobby.
Step 6 post-writing ( 3mins) Show two students’ writings to the whole class and ask students to comment these two students’ writings according to the evaluation table. To get students know how to evaluate their writings and how to improve their writings.

Homework (1min) 1. Read aloud the passage and underline the sentences you can’t understand. Polish your writings according to the evaluation table.
