For the last 8 years, about 200 residents of Strunino, a small town in Russia’s Vladimir Oblast region have not had to worry about buying bread, thanks to the generosity of a local grocery store owner who has been giving it away for free.
Eric came to Russia, from Armenia, 25 years ago. He worked as an engineer, before setting up his own business. But everything changed one day, 8 years ago when sitting behind the counter, Eric saw an old lady counting dozens of coins to pay for a couple of loaves of bread. He found it embarrassing for the old lady and ended up giving her the bread for free. That day, he made the decision to print coupons(优惠券)that the elderly in Strunino could exchange for white or black bread at his store. To make sure that people knew about his offer, he advertised it in a local paper.
But that was only the beginning. Soon, Eric continued his generous offer to people with disabilities, large families with low income, and the generally poor. News spread like wildfire, and soon poor people from neighbouring villages started coming by his shop to receive coupons. Today, the “Eric” grocery store in Strunino gives away around 2,000 loaves of white bread and 1,000 loaves of black bread every month. They also regularly donate gingerbread to local kindergartens, and to coupon holders during holidays.
The kindhearted Armenian says that he just wants those less fortunate than him to have a better life. “Local authorities don’t care about my initiative(计划,措施),” Eric says. “They have never acknowledged my work, never offered thanks, but I didn’t do it for that. I just want the people around me to have an untroubled life.”

I really need a snack! Should I eat a banana or a bowl of ice cream Well, ice cream, of course…, but wait. Am I making the right choice
A snack is any food that you eat between meals. Eating a snack isn’t a bad thing. But be sure to think about what you’re about to put in your stomach! If you want to eat between meals, reach for something healthy. Snacks such as nuts, fruit, low-sugar yogurt and popcorn are good choices. These snacks have important nutrients. Yogurt and nuts, for example, have protein.
Snacks that contain lots of sugar, salt and fat are unhealthy. A sweet candy bar can make you feel energetic when you eat it. But after a while, your body may crash. You may feel uncomfortable or unable to focus on anything. But snacking on healthy food can keep you full of energy through the day.
Not all sugars are bad for you. Fresh fruit has natural sugars that your body needs. But snacks such as candy and chips have added sugars. Your body is in a hurry in digesting (消化)that kind of sugar. Then you get a sugar spike(糖峰值), and shortly after that you may break down. Foods with added sugar also don’t have many nutrients.
You need to eat a variety of foods in order to stay healthy. As a result, when you want to eat a snack, be creative! Here is a simple recipe you can try. All you need is some Greek yogurt and some fresh fruit.
1. Cover the bottom of a pan with some parchment paper.
2. Spread some Greek yogurt on the paper.
3. Cut up some fresh fruit. Put it on the yogurt.
4. Put the pan in the freezer until it’s totally hard.
5. Take out your frozen treat. Break it into pieces. Then enjoy it with your friends!

A. The fruit you have after lunch.
B. The food you eat between meals.
C. The ice cream you enjoy at noon.
D. The drink you need in the morning.
29. What does the underlined word “crash” mean in paragraph 3
A. Get mad. B. Stay calm.
C. Meet a decline. D. Have problems.
30. What is the result of eating added sugars
A. A sugar spike may come out.
B. Energy will be full through the day.
C. Too many nutrients will get together.
D. The body may digest added sugar slowly.
31. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A health website. B. A travel brochure.
C. A sports magazine. D. A medical book.
D
One major issue in contemporary medical science is the use of humans in clinical trials of medical products. These trials occur frequently to determine the best way to manage diseases.
People are invited randomly and paid to take part in trials of an experimental drug, or new surgical procedure, in a number of countries at the one time. For example, up to a quarter of patients in some fields like breast cancer may be engaged. Other projects, one of which is to determine whether new scanning techniques can detect Alzheimer’s disease, are under way. They may be given the drug or a placebo(安慰剂), or the best existing treatment, and results compared. The trials may be “blind” with the patient not knowing which group they are in or they may be a “double-blind” with the doctors not knowing either.
Actually, so many people offer themselves willingly. Patients take the views that at least they will get special attention from the doctor if they participate and they may get access to new drugs before they become available in chemists’ shops. In some countries people are paid to participate, especially in poorer countries where they may be told little of what is actually happening.
Yet there are significant risks too. One US study estimated that one in 30 people suffered side effects from such trials, and one in 10, 000 dies. Doctors say that the risk is not so great during the trial itself, where patients are closely monitored, but comes when the drug is released on the market place. For example, in 2004 a US company recalled an arthritis drug, when it was found that after 18 months of use, the risk of heart attack and stroke increased.
People who support testing claim the risks to the individual are small compared with the benefits. Even if the individual has adverse outcomes and their condition worsens, that is valuable information for the drug company.
While the drug companies usually pay for the hospital trials, government has set up medical committees to handle the issue.
32. What is the main idea of the second paragraph
A. The purpose of medical trial.
B. The procedure of medical trial.
C. The groups of medical trial.
D. The result of medical trial.
33. Why does the author mention the example in the fourth paragraph
A. To tell us a lot of patients die from the medical trials.
B. To show the risk of heart attack and stroke has increased.
C. To introduce the risks of the medical trials are not so great.
D. To explain the risks of some drugs appear when they are sold.
34. What does the underlined word “adverse” in the last paragraph mean
A. negative B. effective
C. subjective D. impressive
35. What would the author most probably discuss next
A How the government prevents clinical trials.
B. How the government gathers the information.
C. How the medical committees pay for the hospital trials.
D. How the medical committees solve the problem.

Ways to fight tiredness
Everyone gets tired—it’s a normal part of human existence. A good night’s sleep will often leave us feeling well rested. 36 We can get overtired and feel a bit run-down which may affect our daily lives —but what can we do about it Here are some things that may stop you getting overtired.
37 Eating healthy meals and snacks regularly, around 3-4 times per day, could improve your energy levels. Giving your body the fuel it needs could help you to be more energized, and therefore, less tired. If you’re feeling overtired, you might not want to exercise. However, regular physical activity may actually mean you are less tired in general. 38 And being more active could help you to lose weight, which can also aid you in the battle against tiredness.
Another thing that can leave us feeling weary and drained is stress. Reducing your stress levels may help you to feel less tired on a regular basis. Taking up an activity like yoga or going for a walk could help you to unwind and feel more refreshed. And you may think if you’re feeling tired, that a good cup of coffee will perk you up. However, the Royal College of Psychiatrists recommends anyone feeling tired to cut down on their caffeine intake, especially after mid-afternoon. 39
Finally, if you do find yourself feeling overtired constantly for days or weeks, you may be suffering from fatigue or exhaustion. 40 However, for most of us, the odd day of feeling overtired might be fixed with a change in lifestyle and a few good nights’ sleep.
A. Get regular exercise.
B. First, let’s look at physical health.
C. In this way, they can get better sleep at night.
D. Try to introduce relaxing activities into your day.
E. However, sometimes we feel more than just general tiredness.
F. Activities like jogging or cycling could also help you get fitter.

When he arrived at the bus stop, he saw a young woman standing there. She was holding a baby and trying to get two kids to behave. “Stop it, Mike!” she cried, rocking the baby. “Stop it, Ricky!”
But the two kids, one looked about four and the other three, just wouldn’t listen. “Here now, boys,” Donald said. “Mind your momma!” Hearing a strange voice, the boys stopped and stared up at Donald with huge eyes. “Thank you,” the mother said. “My car broke down, and I have to take the baby to the doctor. But these two are a handful!”
“Are you new to the neighborhood ” asked Donald,
The woman smiled. “Yes! I’m Ellen, and Mark is my husband. We live in the pink house.” Donald smiled back. “That’s next door to mine! It’s good to have young people moving back into the neighborhood. Children bring things to life!”
Ellen sighed. “Right now, I’m just tired! My boys are just too lively! I had to rush out of the house this morning because of them.
Donald laughed. “I remember when my wife and I were young parents. We were tired all the time!” Suddenly, Ellen started to look nervous. “I can’t find my wallet! Oh, no!”
“Look again,” Donald said kindly. “Sometimes when we are in a rush…”
“It’s not here!” Ellen cried. “What am I going to do I have to be at the doctor’s in half an hour Please, Donald, could you lend me the money for the ticket ”
Donald shook his head. “I’m sorry, Ellen, I don’t have any money. I shop with my food stamps at this time of the month…”
Seeing Ellen look so sad, Donald said, “Take my bus token! The kids don’t have to pay, so it will get you to town!”
