Writing 1
With the start of new school, freshmen of Hendersonville High School in Nashville were excited to meet new classmates and teachers. Among them, however,15-year-old Sergio Peralta was feeling very nervous because his right hand had never fully formed since he was born. Going to a new school and being "different" were always scary. Sergio was particularly concerned with what his classmates would think of him.
Sergio's parents had trained him to use his left hand from an early age. As he grew up, he was used to not using his right hand. He could write with his left one and do some things with special tricks or techniques. Despite this, on the first days of new school, Sergio always felt like hiding his underdeveloped right hand in his sleeve as if nobody would ever find out if he did so.
It didn't take long for someone to learn Sergio's secret. Jeff Wilkins, the teacher of Sergio's engineering class, figured out that Sergio was missing part of his hand and decided to do something for the new student. Jeff had been leading a robotics project in the school and expert in 3D printing technology. Besides, he hoped to take advantage of this hands-on chance to help his robotics students learn more about engineering and how a robotic hand worked.
So in his class, Jeff announced with great enthusiasm, "You're supposed to come up with new ideas and solve issues. Now Sergio needs a new hand, so we'll work together to build Sergio a robotic hand." His words fueled everyone's curiosity and creativity.
For the next four weeks, Jeff and his class including Sergio worked on the project. After some precise measurements and researches, the class put forward a design draft. Jeff made a few adjustments and gave them some practical suggestions. With access to online models and a 3D printer, they eventually created a robotic hand, which was intended to look good and work well, like catching something.

Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests, green fields, and a vast ocean. Enjoying a swim in the waters was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their home. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.
Melati didn't think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. "If they could do it, we could do it too," she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn't wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace.
"So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It's so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can't we do something to get it back " Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. When Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. "How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!" Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them the thumbs up and hugged the sisters.

Writing 3
School was over, the day was fading and it started to rain. I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again—a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers' warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy(嫉妒), but something like depression. I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up, it was a moment full of great exception and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the cars and saw my friends' faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding myself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache occasionally. She looks like a homely middle-aged housewife. She knits(编织) most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I'd force a smile and reply in a half-joking manner: homemade. She simply doesn't seem to understand what's in fashion.
I couldn't remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp, or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been fun riding with her. I had enjoyed watching our shadows growing longer and shorter by the light of the streetlamps along the road. Just now there seemed to be something standing between us, which made her so strange to me and me to her.

Today Mom showed up in a raincoat.
Mom tried to cover me with the raincoat again as a storm set in.

I yawned(打哈欠) as I got off the last step of the bus. I had woken early that morning, and had not been able to sleep on the long ride, thinking about that day's race. I had never raced in a statewide race before. Over thirty high school teams ran, along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the bus, and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently.
"Start warming up, " our coach told us, roughly forty-five minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches, we headed over to the starting line, eager for the race to begin.
The starter walked to the middle of the field. There will be two commands, he boomed, "Runners set, then the gun. If you hear another shot, return to the starting line to start again. " My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race.
"Runners set!" the starter shouted. Bam! The gun fired, and he rushed out of our way. Adrenaline (肾上腺素) rushed through my body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first turn, my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then, in what felt like only one minute, I arrived at the one mile mark.
"6′10", " a man declared as I ran by. I tried to ignore him, but my legs began to burn as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go. I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three. Minutes later, I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one more time. Just as I almost reached my limit, a boy passed me. He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.

I gathered up my strength to speed up but suddenly fell to the ground.
In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one, I asked the boy to run without me.

Sista raced ahead, the sea breeze streaming against her face. Rafi finally caught up and then they rested in the shade.
"Now I'm hungry. I know where there's a great apple tree," Sista said."It belongs to an old lady called Susan who lives in the little house by the hill. I heard she's stubborn, but that sometimes she gives fruit in return for an errand(差事)."
"Let's go," Rafi said. They crossed a stream by hopping from rock to rock. Finally, upon a hilltop, they saw a splendid apple tree with bright red fruits.
A small farmhouse stood at the bottom of the hill. Rafi's heart pounded as Sista knocked on the door. An elderly woman answered.
"Yes " the lady asked, staring at the girls.
"We heard..." said Sista, her voice shaky, "that we could run an errand for you in exchange for apples."
Susan raised one eyebrow. "Ah, yes," she clicked her tongue. "Nothing is free, eh "
She led the girls into the kitchen. When passing the living room, Sista found that the wall was decorated with colourful crayon drawings, which seemed to be children's. She wondered who drew these since Susan was alone, with no grandchildren, even no families or relatives. The lady grabbed two baskets, one large and one small, and pushed them into the girls' hands. "Go fill these with e right back."
The girls raced up the hill to the tree, climbed the branches, and picked the ripest apples. After filling the baskets, they returned to the house.
Susan filled a bag with rice and dried beans, and then she handed it to Sista."Take this bag and the large basket of apples to the Gomez family. Do you know them "
The girls nodded. Sista had heard that Mr. Gomez had been sick in bed for a long time and that Mrs.Gomez had to raise three little kids.
"Good. And ask them for the payment," Susan added with a tight smile.

I first became conscious of my body image last year in fifth grade. One day I was walking by my mirror getting ready for bed and I noticed that my stomach looked big. I started to really hate that and think I was fat even though my family always told me how skinny I was. It wasn't only my stomach—I started to think my nose was ugly and that my laugh was disgusting. I was even afraid to laugh or smile in public.
Then, in the sixth grade, a popular guy in my class named Luke made it worse. He told his table group that my body looked swollen in skinny jeans. I heard about it from someone else, but then Luke even told me to my face! I couldn't stop thinking about what Luke had said. Even worse, I started to believe it was true, and I hid my skinny jeans all the way at the bottom of my drawer.
I know I cared too much about what other people said and thought about me. I guess I just wanted to be liked. In fact, I really wish I could have just brushed off comments like that, but I couldn't change my personality and what I cared about that easily.
Luke's mean comment affected me in a big way. I lost confidence in more than just my body—I started to think that I didn't matter and that I didn't have a place in the world. To make it worse, some people also started telling me that I was not meant to be an author, which is what I really want to be. That especially hurt and I started to feel really sad all the time.
I hadn't really told anyone how I'd been feeling until a couple of months ago when I got a call from my cousin. I'm really close to her, and hearing her voice and laugh made me feel so good inside. I thought about how I used to be that way too, and how I was so sick of feeling sad.

Then I started telling her and it all came out.

Steve grabbed his bat and glove. "See you later, Mom. I'm going to Paul's." He raced out the door and slammed it behind him. Summer vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day so they could make the freshman team.
Paul was waiting outside for Steve. "What are you doing Where's your stuff " Steve lifted his bat onto his shoulder when catching sight of Paul.
Paul shook his head unhappily. "I have to clean Mr Thompson's garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can't do it himself. My mom always volunteers me for helping the Thompsons. They're kind of old."
"OK," said Steve. "I'll help you. We'll get done quicker working together."
The boys went down the block to the Thompson's and got started. They found a couple of brooms and shovels(铲). Before they swept, they put boxes that were strewn(遍布) around the garage floor on shelves. As Paul put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up. It wasn't sealed, so he opened it. There were lots of one-hundred-dollar bills.
"You've got to see this." He pulled out a handful of bills and showed Steve with his eyes lit up. "Where did you get that " said Steve. Paul pointed to the shelf. "It just fell down when the box fell. There's got to be a couple of thousand boxes falling. There's got to be a couple of thousand dollars here. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know."
Steve furrowed his brow(皱眉) and shook his head. "Are you crazy That's stealing." "Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don't get paid. It's not really stealing; it's a kind of payment for my hard work," Paul insisted. At that time, Steve was about to grab the money from Paul's hand when they heard a sound.

It was an early winter morning. Joan was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already nine o'clock.Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe. Although Joan was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up. After all, she didn't expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log, to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warmhearted greetings,"Good morning, my dear!"Recognizing the voice from her father, Joan was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.
Joan's father was a seaman, who rarely came back. Working on the sea was really hard.Born in a not rich family, Joan and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students throughout the academic career and actively involved in school activities. They became the pride of the school and the envy of the students.
"Good morning, Dad. What's up "Joan said in an easy tone."I have been very nice recently, my baby. Today is your mother's birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in an hour and a half. Do remember to take the cake."
Hearing her father's words, Joan felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum's birthday! She took a glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the oily floor that hadn't been mopped(用拖把擦) for a few days—There was two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise for Mum.
Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement."Well, Dad, now I'm going to wake Mike up.We will give Mum a surprise!"
Joan hung up the phone with Dad, and hurriedly went to Mike's room to share her Big Cleaning plan with him. After listening to Joan, Mike readily accepted her idea.

Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. They took advantage of their spare time to pick up rubbish on the beach. However, it was soon that they realized that they couldn't solve the problem on their own for there was so much plastic. After discussions and preparations, they started an organization to spread their idea among the youth, involving more youths in the movement, which proved to be a hit(现在分词involving作状语;which引导非限制性定语从句). More and more teenagers took part. In a month, they altogether collected and recycled 2.5 tons of plastic, recovering the beautiful beach.

They said the team is what keeps them going on the challenging days and added, "Keeping our team engaged and motivated has been a challenge and we are happy to have a positive influence."
Today Mom showed up in a raincoat"可知,妈妈穿着雨衣出现了,据此可知,该段重点描写作者见到妈妈后的尴尬场景。 Mom tried to cover me with the raincoat again"可知,本段还应写出作者妈妈用雨衣盖住作者的情景。
Mom tried to cover me with the raincoat again as a storm set in"可知,妈妈再次用雨衣将作者盖住。

Today Mom showed up in a raincoat. Once she saw me(时间状语从句), Mom called my name excitedly. Almost everybody present looked in her direction. I swallowed hard and fixed my stare on the middle of the road, sweat forming in tiny droplets on my forehead(独立主格结构). When she tried to cover me with the back of her raincoat(时间状语从句), I simply threw it aside. In silence, I shot her a blaming glance and threw my backpack heavily into the front basket of the bike. Without a single word, I jumped onto the back seat.
Mom tried to cover me with the raincoat again as a storm set in. Reluctantly, I pulled it over. With the wind roaring angrily and the raincoat dancing(with复合结构), it felt warm and secure inside. Mom bent forward and pedaled with all her strength, her waist twitching with tension(独立主格结构). I started to feel guilty about my coldness, tears welling up in my eyes(独立主格结构). Quietly, I put my hands around Mom's waist and gently pressed my face against her back. In the crying wind and pouring rain, I found myself hugging my mother(find+宾语+动词-ing形式作宾补), tighter than ever.

In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one, I asked the boy to run without me"可知,超过作者的男孩帮助作者跑完了第二英里。
In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one, I asked the boy to run without me"和常识可知,到了决定名次最关键的最后一英里,作者应该会让超过他的男孩丢下自己,努力去争取好名次。

Then I started telling her and it all came out. She seemed so surprised and said how special I was(how引导宾语从句). She started listing all my good qualities, saying I shouldn't listen to people who said mean things because they were probably just feeling bad about themselves or trying to look cool(现在分词短语作伴随状语,who引导定语从句,because引导原因状语从句). Definitely, she added that I shouldn't let them tell me how to feel about myself or my body. It was like a sudden wake-up call:focusing on what other people thought of
me only made things even worse, and I must learn to love and accept myself for who I am(动名词短语作主语;what引导宾语从句;who引导宾语从句).
When I went back to my bedroom, I looked at myself in the mirror for a long time. I saw what I had never seen in myself before(what引导宾语从句), like my nice grey eyes, my cute smile, and the fact that I am beautiful in my own way(that引导同位语从句). I know some people might still make hurtful comments again, and sometimes I may feel like I am fat again, but next time I will be prepared. I will only think well of myself even when I am feeling sad, and stand up for myself when someone puts me down. In my eyes, I am perfect myself—no one can change that.

When they were about to leave, Mrs Thompson handed Paul a brand-new bat and glove. Paul looked atthem, his face blushing with shame. "Th... thanks so much." Voice trembling(独立主格结构), Paul then bravely poured out everything about the envelope and gave back the money he had hidden before, apologizing for his stealing. However, Mrs Thompson, instead of boiling with anger, came up to Paul, and said gently, "Oh, thank you for helping me find the envelope. I totally forgot where I had put it." In that split second, it dawned on him that what really matters is simple honesty and simple kindness.
