Due to social events in recent years, the relationship between social media and teenagers mental health has been under heated discussion.
On Sept 30, a British court decided that content on social media platforms contributed to the depression of 14-year-old Molly Russell. Russell interacted with 2,100 posts related to pessimistic, self-harm in the six months, leading up to her depression, reported the Observer website.
The correlation has also been proved by science. A study in 2019 showed that the frequent use of social media by teenagers can lead to a decrease in their mental health.
So, how can we make sure that teenagers won’t get hurt while using social media Chan, 18, from the University of Macao shared her experience. Chan said that she once came across short videos romanticizing mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. She immediately reported them to the platform.
But she said that the users’ power to regulate videos is still limited. “It is ultimately the responsibility of the social media platforms to filter out content that is potentially harmful.” She also noticed that the age of social media users has become increasingly younger. Society should pay attention to this, she said. “Since it’s not possible to cut off access to social media for younger users, why not introduce a ‘supervision mode’ with which parents can regulate the content to be viewed by teenagers beforehand ” she said.
Wu Chengyu, 18, studies at Tianjin Experimental High School. He said that several years ago he came across a game that lures teenagers to self-abuse and depression. He quickly chose to ignore it so he wouldn’t be influenced. This is the same way he reacts when exposed to negative content on social media.
In Wu’s opinion, teenagers today should improve their social media literacy(素养), telling real from fake and good from bad. “Also, everyone can be a content creator on social media.” he said, “We should all strengthen our awareness of ethics”.
24.What led to Russell’s depression according to a British court
A.Her interaction with others online.
B.Negative information on social media platforms.
C.Short videos she watched on the Internet.
D.Her addiction to online posts.
25.Which of the following statements does Chan probably agree with
A.The number of younger social media users should be limited.
B.Parents should monitor the content to be viewed by teenagers in advance.
C.A supervision mode ought to be introduced by parents.
D.It is the responsibility of the society to romanticize mental illnesses.
26.Who should be ultimately responsible for removing negative content according to Chan
A.Parents. B.Internet users.
C.Content creators. D.Social media platforms.
27.What does Wu suggest teenagers should do
A.Use social media wisely. B.Reduce social media usage.
C.Stay away from online games. D.Learn more about social media.

My parents and teachers-even some of my friends—think I’m quiet and shy, really smart but not very cool. In fact, that’s who I am when I am with them, but not who I really am. The real me comes out when I’m around guys who are more like me-like Tom Henderson and Graham Barry. I met Tom and Graham at a Young Scientist contest last year. The three of us were among the five finalists. As soon as we met, we really hit it off.
As we talked about the conference, we discovered that all three of us were interested in space debris mitigation, which is the study of the prevention of space garbage damaging satellites and the new space station. It was great to meet other people my age who actually knew what I was talking about. When I talk about “space garbage,” most of the kids at my school just say, “Oh, you mean like asteroid-type(小行星之类的)things I played a videogame about that once.”
Luckily, we met each other on the first day of the conference, so we were able to spend a lot of time together for the entire three days. We talked about everything from the best schools to go to, what degrees to get, and even the names of the best people in each field. We want to study with the pioneers. Both Tom and I want to study with Dr. Claude Phipps, the inventor of a project that developed a laser(光)that knocks down space garbage before it does any damage to expensive space vehicles. Graham wants to study under Didier Patrick Queloz, the physics Nobel winner from the University of Cambridge.
Even though the three of us don’t get a chance to see each other very often, we’re still the best of friends. We call each other a couple of times a month. I always feel happy when I talk with Tom and Graham. It’s like the other person in me wakes up. With them, I’m my “real shade.”
28.What does the underlined phrase “hit it off” in paragraph I mean
A.Competed seriously. B.Prepared fully.
C.Got on well. D.Stood out fast.
29.What might the author feel when he talks about space garbage with his classmates
A.Concerned. B.Confused. C.Disappointed. D.Surprised.
30.What can be learned about Claude Phipps
A.He is a Nobel Prizewinner in physics.
B.He finds some asteroid-type things.
C.He reduces the price of space vehicles.
D.He contributes to dealing with space garbage.
31.What message does the author most want to give us
A.A friend is a second self.
B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C.A friend to all is a friend to none.
D.A friend is easier lost than found.

There’s a huge amount of science about dreaming but we still don’t know much about it. It’s not even clear if everyone does it: it has been proved that everyone experiences rapid eye movement(REM)sleep, but whether those who claim they never dream really don’t, or do dream but simply don’t remember it after waking, isn’t clear. Nor is the way in which dreams are formed in the brain entirely understood, let alone why it happens.
However, many researchers have long believed that bad dreams allow us to safely “act out” potentially dangerous situations before they occur in real life. And a new study seems to add weight to that theory.
The researchers asked 18 volunteers to wear headsets while they slept and then woke them several times during the night to ask them a series of questions about whether they’d been dreaming, and if that dream involved fear. They then compared the volunteers’ answers to their mapped brain activity during sleep.
They discovered that during “scary” dreams, two areas of the subjects’ brains were particularly active: the insula(脑岛)and the cingulate cortex(扣带皮层). During the day, the former is involved in identifying and evaluating emotional responses, while the latter is responsible for preparing the body’s physical reaction to threats.
In the second part of the study, 89 participants kept a dream diary for a week, and were then shown a series of unhappy images. In subjects who reported having a lot of frightening dreams, the images caused less of a response in the two brain regions than those who reported few or none. What’s more, those who’d had more bad dreams showed more activity in a region of the brain that’s known to reduce the fear response.
“Dreams may be considered as real training for our future reactions and may potentially prepare us toface real-life dangers,” said lead researcher Lampros Perogamvros.
32.Which of the following is scientifically clear according to the text
A.Whether some people never dream.
B.How the brain works during REM sleep.
C.Whether everyone experiences REM sleep.
D.Why some people forget their dreams after waking.
33.What were the participants in the first part of the study asked to do
A.Keep a dream diary for a week.
B.Wear headsets all day long.
C.Try to create fear in their dreams.
D.Answer questions about their dreams.
34.Why were the participants in the second part of the study shown unhappy images
A.To test their reaction to fear.
B.To cause them to dream bad dreams.
C.To weaken their fear response.
D.To find out why they had bad dreams.
35.What did the new study find
A.Bad dreams can reveal people’s real fears.
B.Bad dreams have a huge effect on people’s lives.
C.Bad dreams are very likely to become real dangers people will face.
D.Bad dreams may prepare people for potentially frightening situations.

How to Make Your Clothes Last Longer
We have to throw out some clothes that we love just because we’ve not taken good care of them. Four top tips can help you make your clothes last longer. 36
●Reduce the times you wash your clothes. Washing your clothes less doesn’t mean wearing the same T-shirt for a week. You can wear clothes like jeans and jumpers at least three times before washing. The exception, of course, is clothes worn for the gym. Besides, if you don’t wear clothes next to your skin, air them after wearing 37 If they seem fine, you can wear them another day.
●Wash our clothes inside out. 38 As the machine spins(旋转)the clothes around, they must “beat with each other”. Turning your clothes inside out reduces wear on the outside surface of your clothes: This can help keep them from damage.
●Air your clothes dry if possible. Drying your clothes on a line is good for both your clothes and he environment. 39 When possible, just use the dryer at a low temperature.
● 40 Rather than throw something out because of a small hole or tear. Knowing how to use a needle and thread(线)and a few basic repairing techniques can be friendly to your clothes and your pocket. If the work is beyond your skills, you can find repair places nearby your houses.
A.Hang your jumpers on the clothes line.
B.Fixing your clothes is a wise alternative.
C.Use an app to find places for clothes repair.
D.Simply check your clothes for any spots or marks.
E. Your clothes are usually beaten hard during the wash.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Every Chinese has his or her own zodiac animal sign according to their birth year. The Chinese zodiac, also known as Sheng Xiao 56 Shu Xiang, is a repeated circle of 12 years. Each year 57 (represent)by an animal. Chinese New Year 2024 is a year of the Loong.
Chinese Zodiac Loong is 58 fifth of the 12 zodiac animals, following the Rat, Ox, Tiger and Rabbit. People born in the year of dragon are 59 (general)born with the zodiac dragon characteristics. They have an ambitious target and never give up.
Back in the pre-Qin period over 2,200 years ago, there was already the Chinese zodiac signs theory. So it is 60 (reason)that Chinese Zodiac years are in agreement with the beginning of Chinese Lunar New Year. If you have an idea of lunar calendar, you will know a Chinese zodiac year often starts from late January and ends in middle February of the next year.
Therefore, 61 (see)what your Chinese zodiac animal is, you need to change your Gregorian calendar birthday to lunar calendar of the year you were born. For example, if you were born 62 February 16,1988(a year of the Loong), the Lunar New Year’s Eve, 63 was very close to Loong year, but you are a Rabbit.
64 is also worth mentioning is that if two people were born in the different Loong years, they may have very different 65 (personality), due to the Five Elements, which are Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. Each element comes in a 60-year cycle.

第二节(满分 25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running. Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would finish in the bottom half. In my late teens, as a member of a baseball team, I was the slowest runner on the team. In the preseason training, I was always the one running by myself at the end.
Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered my first official running race — a 3,000-meter challenge in my city —at age 38, I certainly didn’t expect to win or come close to winning.
I was there because my college friend Jim Hosek was the director of the race, and he asked me to run. The race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their families to be brave, determined, and confident with sportsmanship.
It was a heartwarming program. I wanted to support it, so I showed up, paid the entrance fee, had a number pinned(把……别住)on my back, and moved over to the starting line. There, I waited with about 300 other runners for the race to begin. I was nervous. Would I be the last one to finish a race again Could I even finish the race I wondered.
Before long, someone spoke into a microphone, “Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale(秤), please.” Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale. A man told me to stand on it. “Two hundred and three pounds,” he said. Then he wrote down the race number that was on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so, and then I was told there would be an award ceremony(仪式)after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony.
Not expecting the award, I ran towards the starting line, never realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds.
Paragraph 1:
Soon after, the race started. _________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 2:
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced. _____________________________

67.Soon after, the race started. While I was running, I saw many runners pass me on the way. Minutes later, I already felt tired. However, to encourage those in need, I tried to show the best of me, without worrying about the result. I kept moving forward as fast as I could. After most runners finished the race, I finally made it to the finish line. Despite the tiredness, I was satisfied. Shortly after the race, the award ceremony began and several awards were presented.
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced. Confused and excited, I walked up to the winner’s platform and was awarded a medal. As the crowd cheered and clapped loudly, I felt warmth in my heart. After the ceremony, I learned from my friend Jim that there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds. Although I only beat one person, Jim praised me for my determination, courage, and kindness. Honestly, I was proud of myself. This race increased my love for running and my confidence in myself.
