During my summer vacation in 2019, I had a wonderful eight-day trip to Berlin with my classmates. During the stay, I learned a lot about German.
A year before that, my German friend, Maurice, had come to China, and we spent a weekend together. That experience was unforgettable. Maurice couldn’t speak English very well, and he was very shy, so it was hard for me to talk with him. On my way to Berlin, I was a bit nervous that I would face the same difficulties again. But things went smoother (更顺畅的) than I had expected.
I tried my best to use my poor German to communicate with his family. Maurice had a younger sister, Emily, and a younger brother, Felix, who were very outgoing and cute. I talked to them about China, but sometimes I needed to use Google Translate. The family also had two dogs, who always crawled up (爬上) on my legs and played with me.
A few days later, we got familiar with each other. On the weekend, we walked a long way to Siegessaule, also known as Berlin Victory Column. Maurice’s father shared many stories of the Wars of German Unification, which gave me a new understanding about Germany.
Though we didn’t know each other’s languages well, we still had a wonderful time together.
