My father is a retired army officer and thanks to his job, I was able to stay in many different places. Changing
schools, homes, cities and towns was a part of my growing up years. Thus, making new friends came very easily for
me. All I can say about my experience is that to find new friends is always easy. Because someone in your new school
is also looking for your valuable friendship.
The first step towards making new friends is to accept the fact that you need to meet new people. If you keep
complaining about your situation, then it's not going to get you anywhere. Maybe you've moved to a new place or a
new neighbourhood or you have changed a job, whatever the situation is, staying alone is never a perfect idea. Thus
accept your situation and try hard to make a new friend.
Get in touch with people. This is the only way of coming across people and making friends. Begin with a small
change every day. Talk to the person sitting next to you in your classroom. Share your interests with your neighbour.
Talking to the closest person to you will help you build confidence in yourself. This will give you an opportunity to
discover new people.
The biggest mistake that most of us make, while looking for new friends, is that we look for the same qualities that
we liked in our old friends. As a piece of friendly advice, no two people are the same. Therefore, it's not correct on
your part to expect a new person to have the same qualities as your old friends.
If you like to dance, paint, play some sports, listen to music or read, join their clubs. Joining a club help you come

across different kinds of people in all kinds of situations. Clubs are great places to meet people, share common
interests and know one another better. Joining a gym is also a great way to meet people; learn from them and have
things to talk about.
24.What does this text mainly tell us
A. Some suggestions on how to learn more. B. Some advice about how to make new friends.
C. Some tips on how to get on well with others D. The author's life experiences in different places.
25.Before his retirement, the author's father used to ______.
A. move from one place to another B. teach the author lots of useful things
C. make lots of friends in his life D. be very strict with the author
26.What is the mistake we often make in looking for new friends
A. Trust other people too easily B. Judge a person only by what he says
C. Compare new friends with our old ones D. Forget our old friend after we have new friends.
27.What kind of people is the text mainly written for
A. Teachers. B. Parents. C. Foreign travelers. D. Students.

The Mozart in the Machine
Sometime in the coming decades,an external system that collects and analyzes biometric data( 物特征数据)will
probably be able to understand what's going on in my body and in my brain much better than me.What will it do to
art? Will art remain humanity's last line of defense against the rise of the all-knowing algorithms(算法)?
In the modern world art is usually associated with human emotions. We tend to think that artists are controlling
internal psychological forces, and that the whole purpose of art is to connect us with our emotions or to inspire in us
some new feeling.Consequently, when we come to evaluate art,we tend to judge it by its emotional impact and to
believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
In 1952,the composer John Cage composed a musical piece 4'33" This piece consists of 4 minutes and 33 seconds
during which no instrument plays anything. The piece encourages the audience to observe their inner experiences in
order to examine what music is and what we expect of it.The message is that it is our own expectations and emotions
that define music.
If art is defined by human emotions, what might happen once external algorithms are able to understand and
manipulate human emotions better than Shakespeare,Picasso or Lennon? After all, emotions are not some
mysterious forces—they are a biochemical process. Therefore, given enough biometric data and enough computing
power,it might be possible to hack( 侵) love, hate, boredom and joy.
Of all forms of art, music is probably th emost sensitive to Big Data analysis, because the inputs are themathematical
patterns of sound waves, and the outputs are the electrochemical signals.Allow a learning machine to go over millions
of musical experiences, and it will learn how particular inputs result in particular outputs.
Therefore,in the long run, algorithms may learn how to compose entire tunes, playing on human emotions as if they
were a piano keyboard.Using your personal biometric data, the algorithms could even produce personalized
melodies, which you alone in the entire world would appreciate.
Will this result in great art? That depends on the definition of art.If beauty is indeed in the ears of their listener, then
biometric algorithms stand a chance of producing the best art in history. If art is about something deeper than human
emotions, biometric algorithms might not make very good artists. But nor would most humans. In order to enter the art
market, algorithms won't have to begin by straight away beating Beethoven. It is enough if they outperform Justin
Bieber.
28.The author mentions the musical piece 4'33" to ______ .

29.What does the underlined word "manipulate" in Paragraph 4 mean?______
A. Influence. B. Cover. C. Present. D. Appreciate.
30.What can we learn from this passage?______
A. Computers will take the place of artists one day.
B. Human emotions are much more than biochemical signals.
C. Art is the final wall of humanity against the all-knowing algorithms.
D. Personalized music may be available for people to enjoy in the future.
31.What is the author's attitude towards the future of algorithms music?______
A. Uncertain. B. Pessimistic. C. Confused. D. Positive.

One day, I found a wallet on the street. The wallet contained only three dollars and a very old letter. The envelope
was worn and the only thing on it was the return address. I started to open the letter, hoping to find some information.
Then I saw the date—1990, and the signature—Beatrice. The letter was written several decades ago.
Then I made every effort and found out that Beatrice was now working in a hospital. I showed her the letter. The
second she saw the letter, she took a deep breath and said, "Young man, this letter was the last contact I ever had with
Henry. He is my only brother. I loved him very much. I was only 16 at the time and my brother is two years younger
than me. If you can find him, tell him I'm still looking for him," she said and tears began to well up in her eyes.
"Mother is waiting for him to come back home."
When I walked out of the building with the wallet in my hand, the guard of the building recognized the wallet, and
with his help, I finally found its owner, Henry. I handed the wallet to Henry and he said, "Yes, that's mine! It must
have dropped out of my pocket this afternoon."
"I read the letter in the hope of finding out who owned the wallet." I said. The smile on his face suddenly
disappeared. He asked, "You read that letter " "Not only did I read it, but also Beatrice read." I replied. He suddenly
became excited. "Beatrice You know where she is How is she Please tell me," he begged. "She's fine. She has
been looking for you." I said softly.
He grabbed my hand and said, "Sir, you know she is my only sister in this world. I've always missed her."
Henry and I took the elevator (电梯) down to Beatrice's room. I walked over to her. "Beatrice," I said softly,
pointing to Henry, who was waiting with me in the doorway. "Do you know the man "

Text 10 (第17题为推断题)
For most people, doing the laundry is a basic part of life. As long as clean clothes are in demand, a laundry business will be too. Though people always need clean clothes, many don't have time to handle this elementary task. In fact, laundry is often thought to be the least favorable household chore, followed by cooking and sweeping.(18) Considering the constant need for clean clothes, starting a business in the laundry industry can be a great option for a beginner.
Running your own laundry business does not require any specific qualification or experience. The most important thing is: It's necessary to carry out local market research before you make a business plan or buy equipment.(19) Such businesses are most popular in areas with lots of people or where people might not have their own washing machines, for example, the university campus and popular tourist spots.
You may want to run a laundry where customers wash their clothes using your machines. You can also offer services. For example, customers can drop off their laundry, and then pick it up when it's done. You can also offer pick-up and delivery services. Whichever you choose, you'll need washing and drying machines and many other essential things for the business. Keep all of these in mind when you set about calculating the initial costs.(20)

My father is a retired army officer and thanks to his job, I was able to stay in many different places. Changing schools, homes, cities and towns was a part of my growing up years. Thus, making new friends came very easily for me. All I can say about my experience is that to find new friends is always easy. Because someone in your new school is also looking for your valuable friendship.
The first step towards making new friends is to accept the fact that you need to meet new people. If you keep complaining about your situation, then it's not going to get you anywhere. Maybe you've moved to a new place or a new neighbourhood or you have changed a job, whatever the situation is, staying alone is never a perfect idea. Thus accept your situation and try hard to make a new friend.
Get in touch with people. This is the only way of coming across people and making friends. Begin with a small change every day. Talk to the person sitting next to you in your classroom. Share your interests with your neighbour. Talking to the closest person to you will help you build confidence in yourself. This will give you an opportunity to discover new people.
The biggest mistake that most of us make, while looking for new friends, is that we look for the same qualities that we liked in our old friends. As a piece of friendly advice, no two people are the same. Therefore, it's not correct on your part to expect a new person to have the same qualities as your old friends.
If you like to dance, paint, play some sports, listen to music or read, join their clubs. Joining a club help you come across different kinds of people in all kinds of situations. Clubs are great places to meet people, share common interests and know one another better. Joining a gym is also a great way to meet people; learn from them and have things to talk about.

A. move from one place to another
B. teach the author lots of useful things
C. make lots of friends in his life
D. be very strict with the author
26.What is the mistake we often make in looking for new friends
A. Trust other people too easily

The Mozart in the Machine
Sometime in the coming decades,an external system that collects and analyzes biometric data (生物特征数据) will probably be able to understand what's going on in my body and in my brain much better than me.What will it do to art? Will art remain humanity's last line of defense against the rise of the all-knowing algorithms (算法)?
In the modern world art is usually associated with human emotions. We tend to think that artists are controlling internal psychological forces, and that the whole purpose of art is to connect us with our emotions or to inspire in us some new feeling.Consequently, when we come to evaluate art,we tend to judge it by its emotional impact and to believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
In 1952,the composer John Cage composed a musical piece 4'33" This piece consists of 4 minutes and 33 seconds during which no instrument plays anything. The piece encourages the audience to observe their inner experiences in order to examine what music is and what we expect of it.The message is that it is our own expectations and emotions that define music.
If art is defined by human emotions, what might happen once external algorithms are able to understand and manipulate human emotions better than Shakespeare,Picasso or Lennon? After all, emotions are not some mysterious forces —they are a biochemical process. Therefore, given enough biometric data and enough computing power,it might be possible to hack (入侵) love, hate, boredom and joy.
Of all forms of art, music is probably the most sensitive to Big Data analysis, because the inputs are the mathematical patterns of sound waves, and the outputs are the electrochemical signals.Allow a learning machine to go over millions of musical experiences, and it will learn how particular inputs result in particular outputs.
Therefore,in the long run, algorithms may learn how to compose entire tunes, playing on human emotions as if they were a piano keyboard.Using your personal biometric data, the algorithms could even produce personalized melodies, which you alone in the entire world would appreciate.
Will this result in great art? That depends on the definition of art.If beauty is indeed in the ears of their listener, then biometric algorithms stand a chance of producing the best art in history. If art is about something deeper than human emotions, biometric algorithms might not make very good artists. But nor would most humans. In order to enter the art market, algorithms won't have to begin by straight away beating Beethoven. It is enough if they outperform Justin Bieber.
28.The author mentions the musical piece 4'33" to ______ .
A. discuss the effect of silence in a musical piece
B. emphasize its emotional impact on the audience
C. show the significance of emotions in defining music
D. encourage the audience to observe their inner experiences
29.What does the underlined word "manipulate" in Paragraph 4 mean? ______
A. Influence. B. Cover. C. Present. D. Appreciate.
30.What can we learn from this passage? ______
A. Computers will take the place of artists one day.
B. Human emotions are much more than biochemical signals.
C. Art is the final wall of humanity against the all-knowing algorithms.
D. Personalized music may be available for people to enjoy in the future.
31.What is the author's attitude towards the future of algorithms music? ______
A. Uncertain. B. Pessimistic. C. Confused. D. Positive.
【答案】C、A、D、A
【解析】(28)C.推理判断题。根据第一段Consequently,when we come to evaluate art,we tend to judge it by its emotional impact and to believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.(因此,当我们评价艺术时,我们倾向于根据它的情感影响来判断它,并相信美在观者的眼中)和第二段中This piece consists of 4 minutes and 33 seconds during which no instrument plays anything. The piece encourages the audience to observe their inner experiences in order to examine what music is and what we expect of it.The message is that it is our own expectations and emotions that define music.(这首曲子时长4分33秒,在这段时间内没有任何乐器演奏。
(29)A.词义猜测题。根据划线词所在句子If art is defined by human emotions, what might happen once external algorithms are able to understand and manipulate human emotions better than Shakespeare,Picasso or Lennon?(如果艺术是由人类情感定义的,那么一旦外部算法能够比莎士比亚、毕加索或列侬更好地理解和操纵人类情感,会发生什么?)结合选项,划线词manipulate在句中与influence同义。A.Influence影响;B.Cover覆盖;C.Present呈现;D.Appreciate欣赏。故选A。
(30)D.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中Therefore,in the long run, algorithms may learn how to compose entire tunes, playing on human emotions as if they were a piano keyboard.Using your personal biometric data, the algorithms could even produce personalized melodies, which you alone in the entire world would appreciate.(因此,从长远来看,算法可能会学会如何创作完整的曲调,就像弹钢琴键盘一样根据人类的情感演奏。利用你的个人生物特征数据,算法甚至可以产生个性化的旋律,只有你一个人会欣赏)可推知,在未来人们可能会欣赏到个性化的音乐。故选D。
(31)A.观点态度题。根据最后一段中Will this result in great art? That depends on the definition of art.If beauty is indeed in the ears of their listener, then biometric algorithms stand a chance of producing the best art in history. If art is about something deeper than human emotions, biometric algorithms might not make very good artists.(这会产生伟大的艺术吗? A.Uncertain不确定的;B.Pessimistic悲观的;C.Confused困惑的;D.Positive积极的。故选A。
本文是一篇说明文。文章分析了生物识别算法的崛起对可能给艺术创作带来的影响。

One day, I found a wallet on the street. The wallet contained only three dollars and a very old letter. The envelope was worn and the only thing on it was the return address. I started to open the letter, hoping to find some information. Then I saw the date—1990, and the signature—Beatrice. The letter was written several decades ago.
Then I made every effort and found out that Beatrice was now working in a hospital. I showed her the letter. The second she saw the letter, she took a deep breath and said, "Young man, this letter was the last contact I ever had with Henry. He is my only brother. I loved him very much. I was only 16 at the time and my brother is two years younger than me. If you can find him, tell him I'm still looking for him," she said and tears began to well up in her eyes. "Mother is waiting for him to come back home."
When I walked out of the building with the wallet in my hand, the guard of the building recognized the wallet, and with his help, I finally found its owner, Henry. I handed the wallet to Henry and he said, "Yes, that's mine! It must have dropped out of my pocket this afternoon."
"I read the letter in the hope of finding out who owned the wallet." I said. The smile on his face suddenly disappeared. He asked, "You read that letter " "Not only did I read it, but also Beatrice read." I replied. He suddenly became excited. "Beatrice You know where she is How is she Please tell me," he begged. "She's fine. She has been looking for you." I said softly.
He grabbed my hand and said, "Sir, you know she is my only sister in this world. I've always missed her."
Henry and I took the elevator (电梯) down to Beatrice's room. I walked over to her. "Beatrice," I said softly, pointing to Henry, who was waiting with me in the doorway. "Do you know the man "

About three weeks later I got a call at my office from Beatrice. "Can you break away on Sunday to attend a party Henry and Beatrice are going to have a party in the home!" It was a beautiful party with all the people dressed up to join in the celebration.
