He was one of the first American authors that were famous worldwide and made a large amount of money from writing. During his life, London did many jobs. His broad (广泛的) life experiences were good for his writing.
London loved to read. As a teenager, he spent many hours educating himself in the public library. He went to the University of California, Berkeley, but he stayed for only several months. Later, he left Berkeley. He thought Berkeley was “not lively enough”, and wanted to do something more exciting.
London wrote stories about working people and the hard times they had in order to make a living. He knew their problems first-hand. He worked as a sailor, factory worker and gold prospector (探矿者), to name just a few of his many jobs.
Like many people of the time, London caught the Klondike Gold Rush fever. In 1897, he headed for Alaska. He didn’t find gold there, but he discovered something even more valuable. He discovered that people enjoyed listening to the stories he made up with his nice imagination. London made the workers laugh with story after story. Later, using his experiences during the Gold Rush, he created many more colorful stories.
Once London decided to be a writer, nothing could stop him. His goal was to write at least one thousand words every day. He refused to stop even when he was sick. The birth of our daughter changed the tracks (方向) of our life. My wife and I settled in the United Kingdom—we’d even bought a house 6 months earlier—but the arrival of our daughter forced a moment of rethinking. We wondered whether we should move back to our homeland Brazil.
I remember looking down at our newborn baby and thinking about how different her life would be there. In our native country, we’d be closer to our family and culture. But in the United Kingdom, I had the funding and lab resources I needed for my costly research program. Would such a move sink my career
Several events over the next few months nudged us further in the same direction. We heard that new professor positions had opened up at a university in our hometown, in departments that matched both of our research programs. Then, a few weeks later, I received a call from my brother, who told me that our father had passed away. A deep sadness made me feel that I was losing precious time with my loved ones.
There was no doubt it was the right time to return to Brazil. We applied for the professorships (教授职位) and both received offers. It felt like our personal and professional lives were falling into place. It wasn’t easy getting started with my research in Brazil, however. I didn’t receive any startup funding for my lab and I had to share equipment with other professors. Nine years later, I still haven’t been able to perform the kind of experiments that U.K. funding would have allowed.
But looking back, I have no complaint. We’ve been able to have big meals with our big family on weekends. We had a second child, and our kids are growing up close to their cousins who are around the same age. We are living the lives we wanted to live—working on rewarding research while staying true to what we feel is best for ourselves and for our family.
56. What is the root (根本) reason for the family’s moving back home
A. Better future career choices. B. Loss of a beloved family member.
C. Worries about their girl’s health. D. Hope of living in their own culture.
57. What does the underlined phrase “nudged us further” in Para 3 mean
A. Raised our doubts. B. Quickened our decision.
C. Reduced our worries. D. Increased our uncertainty.
58. What is the writer’s attitude about life back at home
A. Satisfied. B. Regretful. C. Uncertain. D. Anxious.
59. Which of the following is TRUE
A. After returning to Brazil, the writer couldn’t deal with his life well.
B. It was a lot harder getting started with the writer’s research in Brazil.
C. The positions in Brazil didn’t match the couple’s research programs.
D. The writer had enough money and resources for the research program in the UK.

Would such a move sink my career ”以及“ We heard that new professor positions had opened up at a university in our hometown, in departments that matched both of our research programs.”可知此处是指接下来几个月发生的几件事进一步推动作者和妻子朝着同一方向前进。所以nudged us further表示“加快了我们的决定”。故选B。
58.观点态度题。根据最后一段“But looking back, I have no complaint. We’ve been able to have big meals with our big family on weekends. We had a second child, and our kids are growing up close to their cousins who are around the same age”(但回头看,我没有抱怨。我们已经可以在周末和我们的大家庭一起吃大餐了。我们有了第二个孩子,我们的孩子和同龄的表兄妹在一起长大)可知作者对于回家后的生活比较满意,故选A。
59.细节理解题。根据“ It wasn’t easy getting started with my research in Brazil, however. I didn’t receive any startup funding for my lab and I had to share equipment with other professors. Nine years later, I still haven’t been able to perform the kind of experiments that U.K. funding would have allowed.”
D
Cameroon (喀麦隆) is experimenting with Africa’s first mobile system to send a bean signal (信号) over a wireless network. The system will give much needed medical aid to heart patients in poor areas. Arthur Zang invented the device called the Cardiopad (触屏医疗平板电脑). He was just 24 years old when he invented it. The Cardiopad allows heart examinations to be performed. The results of the tests are sent wirelessly to experts in other pans of the country who can understand them.
Simplice Momo is a 55-year-old heart patient in a poor area of the country. He says the device saves his time and money. It is too costly and difficult for him to see a heart expert in the city.
Cameroon has a population of about 22 million. But it only has 40 heart surgeons. Most are in the cities of Douala or Yaounde. Sometimes the heart experts needed can only be found outside the country. Now the device allows doctors to send patients’ medical information to experts in Europe.
Arthur Zang started the Cardiopad project five years ago. Then, the young computer engineer needed more training and $45.000 to make the device. His family did not have the money.
Bankers would not give him loans (资款). So he shared his idea on social media. The president of Cameroon, Paul Biya, provided him with the money for the project. Mr. Zang also received free online training from an engineering school in India.
The Cameroon scientific community considers the Cardiopad extremely effective. The device costs about $4,000. The government of Cameroon has not been able to provide the device for hospitals in need.
Mr. Zang says he has had private investors (投资者) who contact him. But he is more interested in investors who agree with his value. The key is not of money, but of better ways to help save people’s lives.
61. According to Paragraph 1, we can know that ________.
A. Cameroon is the inventor of the Cardiopad
B. the Cardiopad is a medical device to treat heart patients
C. Arthur Zang is a computer engineer and a heart expert
D. the Cardiopad can send medical information to faraway experts.

A. patients B. doctors C. bankers D. managers
63. The Cardiopad project was supported by ________.
A. some private investors B. the bankers in Cameroon
C. the Cameroon scientific community D. Paul Biya and an engineering school in India
64. We can infer (推断) from the passage that________.
A. the Cardiopad costs the patients much but very useful
B. Arthur Zang has no interest in private investors
C. it is very expensive for patients to see a heart expert in Cameroon
D. the Cameroon scientific community provided Arthur Zang with $4,000
65. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. The Cardiopad is widely used in Cameroon now.
B. Arthur Zang is more interested in helping people instead of making money.
C. The Cardiopad is very effective and has been provided to those hospitals.
D. The Cardiopad sends the patients’ medical information to experts around the world.

Jack London, one of America’s writers of adventure stories, was born in California in 1876.
