M: You know, I have to do schoolwork and read books as well.
W: Well, I don’t think schools should give students days off for their mental health.
M: Why
W: Having too many days off can affect our study and even our life. And many students’ parents like mine have to go to work. If students get too many days off, they might be at home alone too much. This could make some students’ mental health issues worse.
M: But some students have serious mental health challenges. How can they get help
W: I do think a mental health lecture can play a vital role in students’ daily life and help to protect them from mental illness.
M: That sounds like a good idea.

A
“You can love someone and still choose to say goodbye to them.” Tara now says. It’s hard to understand these words until I read Tara Westover’s memoir Educated.
In her book Educated, Tara was raised in rural Idaho. Her dad believed the world was coming to an end, and that the family should interact with the health and education systems as little as possible. Major medical crises went untreated-her mother never recovered from her brain injury. Because Tara and her six siblings worked at their father’s junkyard, none of them received proper homeschooling.
Educated is an amazing story. I found it fascinating how it took studying philosophy and history in school for Tara to trust her own perception of the world. Before stepping foot in a classroom until she was 17, her worldview was entirely shaped by her dad. It wasn’t until she went to Brigham Young University that she realized there were other perspectives on things her dad had presented as fact. Eventually, she earned her doctorate in history from Cambridge. Of the seven Westover siblings, three earned Ph. D.s. I think their childhood experience made them tough and helped them persevere. When you meet Tara, she is never cruel even when mentioning her childhood traumas, including the physical abuse she suffered. I was impressed by how she talks so openly about how ignorant she once was.
Educated touches on the divides in our country: rural versus urban, college-educated versus not. Since she’s spent her whole life moving between these two worlds, I asked Tara what she thought. “I worry that education is becoming a stick that some people use to beat other people into submission or becoming something that people feel arrogant (傲慢的) about,” she said. “I think education is really just a process of self-discovery-of developing a sense of self and what you think. I think of it as this great mechanism of connecting and equalizing.”
Tara’s process of self-discovery is beautifully captured in Educated. She’s a talented writer, and I suspect this book isn’t the last.
41.How did Tara’s upbringing shape her worldview
A.It prepared her for a successful academic career.
B.It limited her access to education and critical thinking.
C.It encouraged her to embrace different perspectives and ideas.
D.It instilled in her a strong sense of independence and resilience.
42.Which could best describe Tara according to the text
A.Perseverant and honest. B.Talented and weak.
C.Cruel and accomplished. D.Romantic and determined.
43.According to Tara, what should education primarily involve
A.Exploring more of oneself and individual thoughts.
B.Following established social rules and regulations
C.Strengthening divisions and in equalities among people.
D.Obtaining certain rights and privileges to defeat others.
44.What is the text type of this passage
A.Autobiography. B.News report.
C.Persuasive essays. D.Book review.
【答案】41.B 42.A 43.A 44.D
根据文章第二段“In her book Educated, Tara was raised in rural Idaho. Her dad believed the world was coming to an end, and that the family should interact with the health and education systems as little as possible. Major medical crises went untreated-her mother never recovered from her brain injury. Because Tara and her six siblings worked at their father’s junkyard, none of them received proper homeschooling.(在她的书《Educated》中,Tara在爱达荷州的农村长大。她的父亲认为世界末日即将来临,家庭应该尽可能少地与卫生和教育系统互动。重大的医疗危机没有得到治疗——她的母亲从未从脑部损伤中恢复过来。因为Tara和她的六个兄弟姐妹在他们父亲的垃圾场工作,他们没有一个人接受过适当的家庭教育。)”以及第三段“Before stepping foot in a classroom until she was 17, her worldview was entirely shaped by her dad. It wasn’t until she went to Brigham Young University that she realized there were other perspectives on things her dad had presented as fact. (在17岁踏入教室之前,她的世界观完全是由父亲塑造的。直到她上了杨百翰大学,她才意识到,对于她父亲所说的事实,还有其他的看法。)”可知,Tara的成长环境限制了她接受教育和拥有批判性思维的机会。故选B。
42.推理判断题。根据第三段“Eventually, she earned her doctorate in history from Cambridge. Of the seven Westover siblings, three earned Ph. D.s. I think their childhood experience made them tough and helped them persevere. When you meet Tara, she is never cruel even when mentioning her childhood traumas, including the physical abuse she suffered. I was impressed by how she talks so openly about how ignorant she once was.(最终,她在剑桥大学获得了历史学博士学位。在Westover的七个兄弟姐妹中,有三个获得了博士学位。我认为他们的童年经历让他们变得坚强,并帮助他们坚持下去。当你见到Tara时,即使提到她童年的创伤,包括她遭受的身体虐待,她也从不残忍。她如此坦率地谈论自己曾经多么无知,这给我留下了深刻的印象。)”可推测,Tara是个有毅力、诚实的人。故选A。
根据文章第四段““I worry that education is becoming a stick that some people use to beat other people into submission or becoming something that people feel arrogant (傲慢的) about,” she said. “I think education is really just a process of self-discovery-of developing a sense of self and what you think. I think of it as this great mechanism of connecting and equalizing.”(她说:“我担心教育正在成为一些人用来迫使别人屈服的大棒,或者成为人们感到傲慢的东西。我认为教育实际上只是一个自我发现的过程——培养自我意识和你的想法。我认为这是一种连接和平衡的伟大机制。”)”可知,Tara认为教育应该是一个自我发现的过程,应该培养自我意识和自己的想法。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Tara’s process of self-discovery is beautifully captured in Educated. She’s a talented writer, and I suspect this book isn’t the last.( Tara自我发现的过程在《Educated》中被完美地捕捉到了。她是个有才华的作家,我想这本书不会是最后一本。)”以及全文内容可知,文章介绍了Tara Westover的自传体图书《Educated》,讨论了这本书的主题、信息和影响,以及作者对它的个人反思。并介绍了作者的成长经历,她的教育经历,以及她对教育的看法,因此这篇文章是一篇书评。故选D。
B
In 1975, a San Diego homemaker named Marjorie Rice came across a column in Scientific American about tiling (瓷砖). There is a problem which has interested mathematicians since ancient Greek times. After Rice’s chance encounter with tiling, family members often saw her in the kitchen constantly drawing shapes. “I thought she was just drawing casually (随意),” her daughter Kathy said. But Rice who took only one year of math in high school, was actually discovering never-before-seen patterns.
Born in Florida, she loved learning and particularly her brief exposure to math, but tight budget and social culture prevented her family from even considering that she might attend college. “For Rice, math was a pleasure,” her son David once said.
Rice gave one of her sons a subscription to Scientific American partly because she could read it carefully while the children were at school. When she read Gardner’s column about tiling as she later recalled in an interview: “I thought it must be wonderful that someone could discover these beautiful patterns which no one had seen before.” She also wrote in an essay, “My interest was engaged by the subject and I wanted to understand every detail of it. Lacking a mathematical background, I developed my own symbol system and in a few months discovered a new type.”
Astonished and delighted, she sent her work to Gardner, who sent it to Doris, a tiling expert at Moravian College. Doris confirmed that Rice’s finding was correct.
Later, Rice declined to lecture on her discoveries, citing shyness, but at Doris’s invitation, she attended a university mathematics meeting, where she was introduced to the audience. Rice still said nothing of her achievements to her children, but they eventually found out as the awards mounted.
45.Why did Rice often draw shapes in the kitchen
A.To become a mathematician. B.To explore the secret of tiling.
C.To fill her leisure time. D.To show her passion for drawing.
46.What can we learn about Rice from Paragraphs 2 and 3
A.She longed to start a column. B.She was rejected from a college.
C.She was good at designing patterns. D.She succeeded in developing a system.
47.What is the text mainly about
A.The magic of math. B.The efforts of Rice.
C.The humility of Rice. D.The patterns of tiling.
48.What can we learn from the Rice’s experience
A.Nothing is impossible to a willing mind. B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.Every cloud has a silver lining. D.Practice makes perfect.
【答案】45.B 46.D 47.B 48.A
由第一段中“After Rice’s chance encounter with tiling, family members often saw her in the kitchen constantly drawing shapes. (Rice偶然接触瓷砖后,家人经常看到她在厨房里不停地画形状)”和第三段中“She also wrote in an essay, “My interest was engaged by the subject and I wanted to understand every detail of it. (她还在一篇文章中写道,“我对这个主题很感兴趣,我想了解它的每一个细节)”可知,Rice对瓷砖这个主题很感兴趣,想了解它的每一个细节,可得出因为想探索瓷砖的秘密,所以Rice经常在厨房里画形状。故选B项。
46.细节理解题。由第三段中“Lacking a mathematical background, I developed my own symbol system and in a few months discovered a new type.
(Nothing is impossible to a willing mind.)”。故选A项。

During my first year in China, some friends who’d been around a little longer than me introduced me to the concept of “House Plant Syndrome”.
Imagine you are at a party at someone’s house. You’re hanging out when suddenly a house plant starts talking to you. Now, there are several ways you could respond to this. Perhaps you would ignore it. Perhaps you would ask the person next to you if they heard it as well. Perhaps you would try talking back to the house plant and engaging it in conversation.
I am that house plant.
The story of the talking house plant explains what can happen here when a white person unexpectedly speaks Chinese. It’s especially true with Chinese who haven’t met foreigners before.
Over time I learned to deal with House Plant Syndrome by talking without being looked at. I visited a restaurant at least once a week. Waitresses there would often stare blankly at me, not even hearing what I was saying when I tried to ask for things. So I leaned to speak clearly while looking in another direction. Without the “foreigners don’t speak Mandarin” filter, the waitresses heard and understood me easily and responded immediately.
A few years later, as my Mandarin became more fluent, and my foreign accent diminished (减少), people could hardly realize I was actually a house plant. This happened a lot with taxis. A lot of the time after I called a taxi, I would get a call from the driver, who would confirm my location. This meant I had a short conversation with the driver long before they saw me. Then I would get in the taxi, say where I wanted to go, and we would drive off in silence. Twenty seconds later, he would burst out “You speak such good Mandarin: I thought you were Chinese!”
I am rarely seen as a talking house plant anymore. The more I work on my accent and fluency, the less I am seen as a house plant. Definitely a good reason to keep working on my language!
49.What does “House Plant Syndrome” refer to
A.A cultural practice in Chinese households.
B.A disease that house plants often suffer from.
C.Foreigners’ preference for Chinese house plants.
D.Chinese people’s reaction to a foreigner speaking Chinese.
50.What caused the author to avoid eye contact with the waitresses
A.Lack of confidence in her Chinese. B.Discomfort with looking at strangers.
C.Desire to hide her identity. D.Ease of speaking Mandarin when looking away.
51.How might the taxi driver feel upon seeing the author
A.Astonished B.Embarrassed C.Confused D.Annoyed
52.What can be the best title for the text
A.The silent conversations of a foreigner in China B.The journey to reveal the secrets of language.
C.Tackling cultural challenges in China. D.Chatting with house plants.
【答案】49.D 50.C 51.A 52.D
由文章第二段“Imagine you are at a party at someone’s house. You’re hanging out when suddenly a house plant starts talking to you. Now, there are several ways you could respond to this. Perhaps you would ignore it. Perhaps you would ask the person next to you if they heard it as well. Perhaps you would try talking back to the house plant and engaging it in conversation. (想象一下你正在某人家里参加聚会。你正在闲逛,突然一株室内植物开始和你说话。现在,你可以用几种方式来回答这个问题。也许你会忽略它。也许你应该问问你旁边的人是否也听到了。也许你可以试着和室内植物顶嘴,让它参与到谈话中来。)”和第四段“The story of the talking house plant explains what can happen here when a white person unexpectedly speaks Chinese. It’s especially true with Chinese who haven’t met foreigners before. (会说话的室内植物的故事解释了当一个白人意外地说中文时会发生什么。对于从未见过外国人的中国人来说尤其如此。)”可知,“室内植物综合症”指的是中国人对说汉语的外国人的反应。故选D。
50.推理判断题。由文章第五段“Over time I learned to deal with House Plant Syndrome by talking without being looked at.
由文章第六段“Over time I learned to deal with House Plant Syndrome by talking without being looked at. 故选A。
During my first year in China, some friends who’d been around a little longer than me introduced me to the concept of “House Plant
Syndrome”. 选项D“Chatting with house plants.

When scientists go to a forest to study monkeys and their habits and behaviors, how do they know who’s who
In the past, scientists had to make marks on each of the animals to distinguish them. But in the future, they may have a much easier way to tell them apart thanks to facial recognition technology.
A research team from China’s Northwest University is using facial recognition technology to identify thousands of snub-nosed monkeys that live on Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi province.
Similar to human facial recognition, the technology that is used to identify monkeys uses their facial features to create a database that includes every monkey, Xinhua reported. “When the system is fully developed, we can connect it with cameras set up in the mountains. The system will automatically recognize the monkeys, name them and analyze their behavior,” said Zhang He, a member of the research team. “For each snub-nosed monkey, we have 700 to 800 image samples, and the recognition success rate is 94 percent,” Zhang added.
“We used mobile phones and portable cameras with the monkeys in tests at distances ranging from about 3 to 10 meters,” said He Gang, a member of the research team and an associate professor in the College of Life Sciences at Northwest University. “There is no need to interfere with the monkeys. Such a method of sampling is clearly non-invasive.”
Compared to humans, facial recognition technology for monkeys is more complicated because of their hairier faces. The color of their hair causes them to blend into their environment. These factors make it harder for computers to identify them.
“Monkeys do not cooperate with researchers in the same way humans do. It is difficult to take high-quality pictures and videos of them, which are needed to improve the system,” said Li Baoguo, leader of the research team.
Currently, there are about 4,000 snub-nosed monkeys living on Qinling Mountain. The team’s goal is to successfully identify every monkey that lives there.
53.What problem do scientists face while studying monkeys according to the text
A.How to mark them. B.How to distinguish them.
C.How to understand their behavior. D.How to observe them clearly
54.What does the article tell us about facial recognition technology for monkeys
A.It is now widely adopted in China.
B.It works better than human facial recognition.
C.It will use monkeys’ behavior to create a database.
D.It can help scientists study monkeys without disturbing them.
55.According to the leader of the team, what is the difficulty in improving the system
A.Less cooperative monkeys.
B.Hard for computers to identify the monkeys.
C.photos and videos of high quality.
D.Too many monkeys to identify.
56.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the article
A.To introduce a new way to identify monkeys.
B.To show the importance of studying monkeys.
C.To compare different ways to identify monkeys.
D.To explain difficulties in developing a new system.
【答案】53.B 54.D 55.A 56.A
根据第一段“When scientists go to a forest to study monkeys and their habits and behaviors, how do they know who’s who (当科学家们去森林里研究猴子和它们的习惯和行为时,他们怎么知道谁是谁?)”
根据第五段中的“There is no need to interfere with the monkeys. Such a method of sampling is clearly non-invasive.(没有必要干扰猴子。这种取样方法显然是非侵入性的。)”可知,猴脸识别技术可以帮助科学家在不打扰猴子的情况下研究它们。故选D。
55.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“‘Monkeys do not cooperate with researchers in the same way humans do. It is difficult to take high-quality pictures and videos of them, which are needed to improve the system,’ said Li Baoguo, leader of the research team.(‘猴子不像人类那样与研究人员合作。很难拍摄高质量的猴子照片和视频,这是改进系统所必需的,’研究小组组长李保国说。)”可知,改进系统的难处在于猴子不配合。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“But in the future, they may have a much easier way to tell them apart thanks to facial recognition technology.(但在未来,由于面部识别技术,他们可能会有一种更容易的方法来区分他们。)”和第三段“A research team from China’s Northwest University is using facial recognition technology to identify thousands of snub-nosed monkeys that live on Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi province.(中国西北大学的一个研究小组正在使用面部识别技术来识别生活在陕西省秦岭的数千只金丝猴。)” 故选A。

The Importance of Failure
When the world-famous author J.K. Rowling gave a speech at a Harvard University graduation ceremony, some may have a little surprised by the topic she chose: “The Benefits of Failure”.
Rowling’s first novel was rejected by 12 publishers before it was finally published, yet paradoxically, it was this experience that helped her to succeed: “Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learnt no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had expected.”
The late Apple CEO Steve Jobs experienced failure early in his career, when he was fired form the company he had co-founded. He felt despair and rejection. However, it was, in his view, “the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods in my life.”
Even Bill Gates has experienced failure. His first company was called Traf-O-Data, but unfortunately, its product didn’t work. It was a total disaster. But what Gates learnt from this experience helped lay the groundwork for the global success that is now Microsoft. He didn’t make the same mistake twice.
Talented fashion designer Vera Wang has built a global fashion empire, yet life wasn’t always so straightforward. A dedicated ice skater as a young woman, Wang was bitterly disappointed when she did not make the 1968 US Olympic team. She gave up sport and joined Vogue as an assistant editor, but was crushed. After 15 years at the magazine, she was passed over for promotion to editor-in-chief. However, this setback prompted her to set up her own bridal fashion label. The rest is history.
Ang Lee, a worldwide-famous director, wasn’t successful either as a student or as an actor. Twice failing the college entrance examination at home, Lee turned to study drama in the US, but his poor English prevented his form becoming an actor. After being accepted for a directing major, Lee spent six years looking for opportunities to direct a film, but was only asked to look after filming equipment. He then spent most of his time writing plays which were rejected by more than 3- companies within two weeks. During six years with no income, he had to depend on his wife. In the end, whit his wife’s encouragement and his determination, all his efforts finally paid off.
All these individuals share something in common: At tough moments in their lives, they showed grit. But what is “grit” exactly Put simply, it’s a passion for something and the determination to work hard and to stick with it. It’s very easy to give up when we his setbacks, but people who have grit keep going.
So. how can we become “grittier” This is where the importance of failure comes in” If we can learn how to manage failure, we’ll learn how to succeed. By working through a series of failures, we’re better prepared for the bigger challenges we’ll face int the adult world: We’ll have
the resilience we need to keep going. We’ll have true grit.
57.What did J.K. Rowling learn from her failures
58.Please paraphrase the underlined sentence.
59.According to the passage, please decide which part of the following statement is false, then underline it and explain why.
The people in the text have in common in that they all had great talent in what they had done.

The people in the text have in common in that at tough moments in their lives, they showed grit. 60.Failures are stepping stones that lead to success. People always make mistakes. Failures provide opportunities for use to figure out the reasons for not succeeding, and work towards avoiding them in the future. The more you fail, the more experience you have, and the better changes you have to be successful in the future.
根据第二段“Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learnt no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had expected.(失败教会了我一些我无法通过其他方式学到的关于自己的东西。我发现我有坚强的意志,比我预期的更有自制力)”可知,失败教会了J.K.罗琳一些她无法通过其他方式学到的关于她自己的东西。她发现她有坚强的意志,比她预期的更有自制力。故答案为Failure taught her things about herself that she could have learnt no other way. She discovered that she had a strong will, and more discipline than she had expected.
第三段划线句子“The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything.”
Steve Jobs felt that being successful was a huge weight on his shoulders. When he was fired, the pressure disappeared and he was free to start a new life and to do what he wanted.

The people in the text have in common in that at tough moments in their lives, they showed grit.
Failures are stepping stones that lead to success. People always make mistakes. Failures provide opportunities for use to figure out the reasons for not succeeding, and work towards avoiding them in the future. The more you fail, the more experience you have, and the better changes you have to be successful in the future.

First of all, as middle school students, we should be kind and friendly to others, always ready to give a helping hand to those in need. Besides, we must behave ourselves, obeying both class and school rules and doing what we can for the class. Also, it matters a great deal to be honest and trustworthy in our daily life. Secondly, we should respect the old and love the young, especially showing concern for our parents and our teachers by understanding them and following their instructions. Last but not least, we should learn to communicate with others. Try to be considerate and put ourselves in others’ shoes, especially when frictions come.

A
“You can love someone and still choose to say goodbye to them.” Tara now says.

He didn’t
make the same mistake twice.
By working through a series of failures, we’re better prepared for the bigger challenges we’ll face int the adult world: We’ll have the resilience we need to keep going. We’ll have true grit.
57.What did J.K. Rowling learn from her failures
58.Please paraphrase the underlined sentence.
59.According to the passage, please decide which part of the following statement is false, then underline it and explain why.
