At just 14 years old,Heman Bekele became the Nicole of the 2023 3M Young Scientist Challenge, standing out among nine other finalists with his creative invention known as the Skin Cancer Treating Soap(肥皂).In recognition of his exceptional achievement, this ninth-grade teenager is set to receive a cash award of $25,000.
Bekele’s revolutionary concept, presented through a brief two-minute video, centers on the development of a soap that is not only affordable, priced at less than $10 per bar,but also has the potential to reactivate(重新激活)dendritic cells—the body’s natural defenders of the skin—to fight against skin cancer.
In Bekele’s own words,“Curing cancer, one bar of soap at a time.” His passion for biology and technology was the driving force behind this ingenious creation, and the 3M Young Scientist Challenge provided him with the perfect platform to showcase his visionary ideas.
Reflecting on his inspiration,Bekele shared that his childhood in Ethiopia played a significant role in shaping his creative thinking.Having witnessed people work tirelessly under the burning sun,he couldn’t help but wonder how many were aware of the risks associated with prolonged sun exposure.
“I wanted to make my idea not only scientifically exceptional but also accessible to a broad audience,” Bekele expressed during an interview with The Washington Post.To aid him in realizing his big plans,he received invaluable guidance from Deborah Isabelle,a product engineering specialist at 3M,who connected him with other scientists.Eventually, the path forward for Bekele’s creation includes obtaining FDA approval.
During his presentation at the 3M global headquarters in Saint Paul,Minnesota,Bekele passionately articulated his vision of turning the soap into a “symbol of hope, accessibility, and a world where skin cancer treatment is within reach for all”.
Over the coming five years,Bekele longs to perfect his invention and establish a non-profit organization dedicated to distributing his innovative creation to under-served communities, offering hope and a practical solution in the fight against skin cancer.

Have you ever left the house without a jacket on a warm day, only to regret overestimating your freezing weather tolerance Instead of dashing back home for your coat, there may come a time in the near future when you simply use an app to control your clothing’s level of insulation(隔热).
Created by researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT),FibeRobo is a cheap,programmable,shape-changing smart fiber reliant on a liquid crystal elastomer(LCE).Among the uses, clothing filled with the new LCE fiber could adjust the structure to become more insulated in colder temperatures, and vice versa for warmer weather. With an additional ability to combine with electrically conductive threads,a wearer could directly control their FibeRobo clothing or medical wearables like compression clothing via wireless inputs from a controller or smart phone.
As detailed in a recent institute profile,LCEs are composed of molecules(分子) possessing liquid-like properties that can also arrange into periodic crystal formations once cool.Importantly, the team’s new LCE can be flexible between its phases at safe, comfortable temperature levels—an industry first.
The result is a fiber capable of contracting when exposed to heat, and self-reversing as temperatures drop without any external sensors or interwoven components. What’s more,FibeRobo is flexible and strong enough to use within traditional manufacturing methods like embroidery, weaving looms, and knitting machines.
“At the end of the day,you don’t want a top-class fiber,” Jack Forman,an MIT graduate student and paper lead author, said in a statement.“You want a fiber that, when you are working with it,falls into the gathering of materials—one that you can work with just like any other fiber material, but then it has a lot of exciting new capabilities.”
While many current smart textile(纺织品)projects are trying to reinvent how a person can interact with their clothing, these clothing enterprises perhaps may one day expand the number of clothes in your closet.Meanwhile, this newest version may actually downsize your wardrobe.

An overall transformation is needed for the planet to adapt people’s pursuit of well-being.A new study by an international team of researchers explores a Theory of Planetary Social Pedagogy as a driver of a transformative process based on a learning society.
The Theory of Planetary Social Pedagogy is a way of learning applicable to all societal sectors.According to it,people, societies and the world are an interlinked, systemic body.Such a worldview can make life meaningful, increase people’s experiences of belonging and inclusion, expand the scope of care, and help people identify their opportunities to influence.
In a time marked by crises, learning to be one with the world is increasingly essential. In many ways, our everyday lives are linked with all other life on Earth.According to Professor Arto O.Salonen of the University of Eastern Finland, the study’s lead author, the most important reason behind the upgrading(升级)planetary crises is people’s being separated from their surrounding reality.
He says,“As we try for a comprehensive sustainability transition(转变),we need increasingly powerful and more systemic interpretations of reality.” The current strategy for a sustainable future emphasizes economic and technological progress, but that is not enough.Learning is needed, too.A learning society relies on changes in its citizens’ values, beliefs and worldviews.
“How we become aware of our everyday connection to other people and nature at the level of our emotions, body and mind stands at the core of the sustainability transition,” says Erkka Laininen,a co-author of the study.Having an experience of belonging to and being part of the world strengthens people’s sense of meaningfulness and their agency needed in building a sustainable future.
The transformative power of a learning society can be a key factor in the green transformation going into all society,in which citizens’ consumer behaviour and ways of living, moving and producing food and energy are organized in new ways.Conceptions of work and the economy can be reformed, too.
A sustainable future is not about life becoming more miserable—it’s about life becoming richer and more meaningful as hope for the future grows stronger.
32.Why is Theory of Planetary Social Pedagogy mentioned
A.To stress learning to be one with the world.
B.To suggest reforming citizens’ ways of living.
C.To describe how the theory is being improved.
D.To tell if a sustainable future is significant.
33.What is the main reason for increasing global crises according to Professor Salonen ( http: / / www. / )
A.The planet is reaching its limits.
B.Humans break away from the reality.
C.Old ideas of well-being are being questioned.
D.Progress in economy and technology is unbalanced.
34.What can we conclude from the text
A.A sustainable future is based on a learning society.
B.Humans, societies and the world were connected more.
C.Ending the present strategy for future is needed.
D.Global crises have resulted in wrong worldviews.
35.How does the author support the theme of the text
A.By introducing a theory. B.By making a comparison.
C.By using researchers’ arguments. D.By providing study processes.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When you have many tasks to accomplish on a given day, there are a few different approaches you can take to kick-start your productivity. You can “eat the frog”,that is,you can get your hardest, most demanding responsibility out of the way before anything else. 36 Here’s why that might be a better fit for you.
When you eat the frog and take on a difficult task right away, you are supposed to focus on it absorbedly and get it all done. The problem with that is the smaller, boring responsibilities are stuck in your head. 37 Knocking those out first could clear the path you need to really get into deep work when it’s time to do something more challenging or time-consuming.
In general, the task you’re scared or procrastinating(拖延的)on the most is probably the one that’s going to take the most effort. 38 I’m great at focusing on big projects and terrible at doing the little tasks.I can sit down to write a long essay, but sometimes will put off a one-pager for weeks, only to realize it took me all of 15 minutes to complete. The key to selecting a small task to do first every day is identifying one you know will be easy, but will result in some kind of reward feeling in your brain.Whether it’s easy or not doesn’t matter as long as you’ll feel good when it’s over. 39
40 Use a system like the Eisenhower matrix or Kanban to figure out what you actually need to do,then select something from that category that you’ll be able to get done quickly and efficiently, get it out of the way,and bask in the accomplishment as you move forward with your day and its more difficult demands.
A.But that doesn’t always have to be true.
B.On the other hand, you could pick out something especially easy first.
C.This always makes it seem like other big tasks you need to handle are simple.
D.That feeling of accomplishment can be large and can end your day with an easy win.
E.You may not be able to focus if you’re preoccupied with a bunch of other little things.
F.And picking something you don’t exactly want to do is an easy way to make sure that happens.
G.Beyond that, you should make a habit of sorting your responsibilities by timeliness and importance.

“Well! Why are you unhappy when you have got what you wanted ” Shanta asked. Shamefaced, Harman admitted that the boon that he had been granted had now become a burden to him as he could not get enough rest or sleep. “I should have listened to you and worked hard to become rich, not chosen such an easy way out.” he regretted. Shanta said. “The only way you can restore your peace of mind is to ask the sage to take back the boon.” Harman agreed and decided to do the same.
Harman learned that the sage had moved to the neighboring village. Hurrying there, he found the sage and begged him to take back the boon, as he did not want wealth at the cost of peace of mind and he would earn money by working hard. “Very well.” said the sage. “You will no longer have dreams from tonight.” Since then, true to his word, Harman worked hard. He helped his wife with the housework and also opened a grocery shop. Shanta was happy to see her husband had changed a lot. She was thankful that the boon had finally made him realize his fault.

(Text 10)
W: A customer would arrive each morning at the shop I worked at. He would tell me stories about his wife, and I would listen. She was ill and in declining health and he was dealing with the loss of her companionship in the things they used to do together that she could no longer do. He spoke of his love and pride in his wife and their life together and then his sadness when she was gone. After her passing he continued to arrive as usual and talk about her, and I continued to listen. Then one day he reached across the counter and held my hands. He told me that he had been thinking of me, praising me on how I was with the customers of the shop and the way I interacted with him and others during the occasion round of golf that we played. This wonderful man taught me a life lesson I have never forgotten. To quietly listen with full attention to those who others have dismissed as of no interest and of little value. When someone tells us about their lives, we honor their stories by listening to them not with our heads but with our hearts.
