Languages are dying out all the time. Here are four languages that were once widely spoken but are now considered as “dead” languages.
Old Norse
Old Norse was spoken and written by the Vikings from about the 7th century. It was used in countries like Iceland and parts of Russia. The Vikings were famous for their attacks on neighbouring countries, and so Old Norse had an influence on the languages of the places they attacked, including English. For example, English words such as “egg, gift, anger, want, trust and score” come from Old Norse.
Middle English
Middle English was spoken in England between the 12th and 15th centuries and was very different from the English we use these days. In the past, England was highly influenced by Old Norse. So was its language. There are no manuscripts (手稿) in Middle English as it was much more fashionable to write in French. Middle English gave way to modern English. One example of the wide use of modern English was Shakespeare’s works.
Hunnir
Hunnir is the most mysterious of the languages on our list. The Huns were a community that spread across eastern Europe in the 4th and 5th centuries. Despite the Huns’ success in expanding their empire, their language was never written down. The few words that are known are mainly names-in modern Turkey and Mongolia. Apart from these, only three words are known; kamos, medos (types of drinks) and strava (a big meal).
Ancient Greek
More than 4,000 years ago, the Greeks spoke an advanced language known today as Ancient Greek, and developed the first alphabet. Indeed, the English word “alphabet” is taken from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet: alpha and beta. Although the language is no longer spoken anywhere, it continues to be studied by scholars around the world and is regarded as one of the most important languages of all time.

During World War II, Duchess Nina Douglas-Hamilton played a vital role in looking after animals.
As the war broke out, the government issued orders for the mass killing livestock (家畜) to prevent them from being captured or destroyed by the enemy. Duchess Nina launched a campaign to save as many animals as possible, and soon became known as the “animal heroine” for her efforts.
Duchess Nina worked with local farmers and animal owners to relocate animals to safer areas, such as the Scottish Highlands. She also established a network of volunteers who helped to care for animals during the war. She organized feeding programs, medical care and transportation, ensuring that animals were well looked after even during the most difficult times. The most challenging aspect of her work was the shortage of food during the war. So she established a vegetable garden and used leftovers to create nutritious meals for animals. She also reached out to the public for donations of food and supplies, and was able to secure enough resources to keep animals healthy and fed.
In addition to her work with domestic animals, Duchess Nina was also a strong advocate for wildlife conservation. She established a center for wild animals Scotland, where she provided a safe place for deer, foxes and other animals that were threatened by the war. She also worked with local protection groups to protect natural habitats.
Duchess Nina’s work during World War II was not without its risks. She frequently risked her life to save animals, often driving through perilous areas.

6.【2024·广东佛山·二模】
He is a Chinese superstar, a piano genius who has sold millions of albums worldwide. Lang Lang has also used his fame and fortune to help state schools around the world that lack music, warning at a 2019 awards ceremony in London that such lessons had become “a real challenge” for children in the most disadvantaged communities.
Now he is bringing music to British state schools in an ambitious project that will set up modern “piano labs” in needy schools across the nation. Each lab will have 20 to 30 keyboards. The plan is inspired by his programmes in the US and China, in which he has invested tens of millions of pounds.
In the US, he has set up piano labs in 86 schools, giving 70,000 kids access to keyboards. In China, he has installed them in 104 schools, enabling 110,000 children to make music. This is primarily for pupils aged seven to 12.
The first UK school to benefit is the Winns primary school in Waltham Forest, London’s 12th poorest area. It will receive 30 keyboards within the next few weeks. Every lab is accompanied by a curriculum created by the
Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto and Lang Lang, with ongoing teacher-training, financial support, and headphones, allowing group piano classes.
Asked what inspired him to support UK schools, Lang told the reporter: “We were able to identify many similarities between state schools in the UK and public schools in the US in terms of the way access to music and arts can be extremely limited when budgets are cut…I was so surprised by how music classes are never guaranteed. The schools and teachers are incredible, and are so dedicated to providing their students with everything they can. But it shocked me how access to music education can be so limited.”
His charity quotes the Greek philosopher Aristotle: “Music has the power of producing a certain effect on the moral character of the soul, and if it has the power to do this, it is clear that the young must be directed to music and must be educated in it.”
Lang Lang said: “When I visit our partner schools and see the joy on the students’ faces or hear from our teachers about the progress students are making, I’m reminded of why we created this programme—to give children an opportunity to discover what they’re capable of achieving and to find their voices through music.”
17.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To offer background information. B.To introduce an argument.
C.To discuss Lang Lang’s plans. D.To highlight Lang Lang’s reputation.
18.Which schools will Lang Lang help in Britain
A.Private schools. B.Ambitious schools.
C.Remote schools. D.Disadvantaged schools.
19.Why did Lang Lang decide to support schools in Britain
A.The teachers are doing a good job.
B.Music classes aren’t always available.
C.The budgets are always being cut.
D.The schools are dedicated to helping students.
20.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.Lang Lang—a kind and caring pianist
B.Lang Lang teaches the world to play piano
C.Chinese superstar brings music to British kids
D.Chinese piano genius looks for future piano stars
【答案】17.A 18.D 19.B 20.C
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了音乐家朗朗为英国的一些缺乏乐器设备的学校所做的贡献。
17.推理判断题。根据第一段“He is a Chinese superstar, a piano genius who has sold millions of albums worldwide. Lang Lang has also used his fame and fortune to help state schools around the world that lack music, warning at a 2019 awards ceremony in London that such lessons had become “a real challenge” for children in the most disadvantaged communities.(他是中国的超级巨星,一个钢琴天才,在全球销售了数百万张专辑。郎朗还利用自己的名声和财富帮助世界各地缺乏音乐的公立学校,他在2019年伦敦的一个颁奖典礼上警告说,这些课程已经成为最弱势社区儿童的“真正挑战”。)”可知,本段主要介绍了钢琴天才朗朗的一些基本信息,可推知,本段的目的是提供一些背景信息。故选A。
18.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Now he is bringing music to British state schools in an ambitious project that will set up modern “piano labs” in needy schools across the nation.(现在,他正在把音乐带到英国公立学校,这是一个雄心勃勃的项目,将在全国各地的贫困学校建立现代“钢琴实验室”。)”可知,在英国,朗朗帮助的是那些贫困学校,故选D。
19.细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“Asked what inspired him to support UK schools, Lang told the reporter: “We were able to identify many similarities between state schools in the UK and public schools in the US in terms of the way access to music and arts can be extremely limited when budgets are cut…I was so surprised by how music classes are never guaranteed. The schools and teachers are incredible, and are so dedicated to providing their students with everything they can. But it shocked me how access to music education can be so limited.(当被问及是什么促使他支持英国的学校时,郎朗告诉记者:“我们发现英国的公立学校和美国的公立学校有很多相似之处,在预算削减的情况下,音乐和艺术的机会非常有限……

Some of the greatest discoveries in science have been completely accidental. Then again, maybe science had a little help...
Ice Candy
One of America’s favorite summertime treats came about thanks to a particularly cold night in the San Francisco Bay area in 1905. That’s when 11-year-old Frank Epperson forgot a glass containing powdered soda mix, water and a wooden stick out at the doorway overnight. The next morning, Frank discovered the mixture had frozen around the stick. He popped it out of the cup, licked it…and summers were never the same!
Safety Glass
In 1903, French chemist douard Bénédictus accidentally dropped a glass bottle. To his surprise, the glass cracked but wasn’t broken into pieces. Out of curiosity, he checked it carefully. As it turned out, the bottle hadn’t been cleaned properly and was coated with a thin film of a kind of liquid plastic. A happy accident led to the discovery of safety glass.
YInMn Blue
In 2009, Mas Subramanian, a professor of materials science at Oregon State University, was testing out new materials for electronics in his lab with graduate students. A mixture of metals went into the furnace. What came out was a striking blue mixture. The first new blue since cobalt (深蓝) was discovered in 1802, is called “YInMn Blue.”
Penicillin
In 1928, Scottish researcher Alexander Fleming returned to his lab after a two-week vacation only to discover that mold (霉菌) from an open window had made an uncovered dish of bacteria dirty. Strangely enough, the mold stopped the bacteria from growing, giving the world its first antibiotic.
21.Which discovery has a relatively short history
A.Ice candy. B.Safety glass. C.YInMn Blue. D.Penicillin.
22.What do the four discoveries have in common
A.Science helped a lot. B.Lab experiments laid a basis.
C.They were made by scientists. D.They were made by chance.
23.Who are the intended readers of the text

Occasionally, doctors become patients too. While I wouldn’t wish ill-health on anyone, it can be an inspiring lesson for medical professionals to suddenly be on the other side.
This happened to me a few months ago when I had a kidney stone, which had decided to make its unwelcome presence known in a rather romantic fashion just as I was going out for dinner. The pain came from absolutely nowhere but within minutes I was incapacitated. I was quite taken aback by how astonishingly painful it was.
As a doctor, I initially refused to believe that anything was seriously wrong, because I have witnessed countless individuals come to the emergency room convinced they are dying only for nothing more than trapped wind and then creep (蹑手蹑脚) out as they burp (打嗝) loudly and the pain disappears. However, the unbearable
pain continued to exist, forcing me to acknowledge that this was indeed more than just a stubborn burp,
I was particularly pleased to read afterwards in a medical textbook that renal colic, as the pain is known, is the “most painful event a person can endure, often described as being worse than childbirth”. It’s no wonder chronic (慢性的) pain drives people mad. While doctors talk about pain and its management, it’s hard to put into words how exhausting it really is until you’ve experienced it for yourself.
During my time in hospital, I interacted with numerous doctors, each exhibiting professionalism and kindness but one stuck out in my mind. He was actually the most junior of them all, but something about his manner was incredibly calming and comforting. Whenever he came to my bed to speak to me, he knelt down so he was at my eye level. This simple act rid me of the stress that other healthcare professionals unintentionally projected. Just kneeling down made all the difference.
Experiencing the role reversal of doctor-turned-patient provided me with profound insights into the realities of pain and effective patient care.
24.What does the underlined phrase taken aback in paragraph 2 mean
A.Shocked. B.Impressed. C.Annoyed. D.Moved.
25.What did the author initially think of those patients in the emergency room
A.Pitiful. B.Understandable. C.Embarrassing. D.Ridiculous.
26.What impressed the author most during his stay in hospital
A.The intense pain caused by the kidney stone. B.A small gesture bringing ease and relief.
C.Stress caused by the healthcare workers. D.Doctors with professionalism and kindness.
27.What lesson did the author learn from this experience
A.Experience must be bought. B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.Put yourself in someone else’s shoes. D.Health is not valued till sickness comes.
【答案】24.A 25.D 26.B 27.C
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了作者在经历了从医生到病人的角色转变后,对疼痛和有效的病人护理有了深刻的见解。

For nearly two decades, a thin, sun-burnt postal worker could frequently be seen carrying packages along a dangerous mountain trail in the Taihang Mountains.
The 10-kilometer-long route, which is between 20 centimeters and 1 meter wide, is known as the “cat road” by locals, meaning that it is so dangerous that only cats could walk on it. Whereas, Zhao Yuefang, a postal worker in Ewu township in Huguan county, Shanxi province, had to walk the route every day to deliver mail.
Every day at the crack of dawn, he would start his journey along the “cat road”. From picking up the day’s post to delivering it to villagers and returning along the same route, it took Zhao four days. During rainy and snowy seasons, the mountain road, part of which hugs the cliffs, would become slippery and dangerous. One day in the winter of 2003, the “cat road” was covered in thick snow and he slipped off the trail. Fortunately, he was able to stop his sharp descent by grabbing a tree branch and slowly managed to climb to safety.
By 2012, Zhao had walked more than 300,000 km and delivered over 800,000 pieces of mail. Born and raised in the deep mountains, Zhao truly understands the significance of mail deliveries to villagers. “They depend on the mail to keep in touch with the outside world,” he said. “Their sheer joy written on their face while receiving any post struck me,” he added.
In 2012, a 67-km-long tourist highway was built and gone were those days when Zhao risked his life to walk on the “cat road”. But Zhao was even busier than before. “The number of packages I handle daily now exceeds the number I used to deal with in the past,” said Zhao, adding that villagers are turning to online shopping and ordering more and more goods by post.
31.Why is the mountain trail referred to as “cat road”
A.It’s shaped like a cat. B.It’s intended for cats.
C.It is too narrow and risky. D.It rains cats and dogs there.
32.What does the word “descent” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Fall. B.Pain.
C.Turn. D.Landing.
33.According to the passage, which words can best describe Zhao
A.Persistent and dedicated. B.Diligent and ambitious.
C.Considerate and confident. D.Courageous and generous.
34.What has always motivated Zhao’s enthusiasm for his job
A.The villagers’ respect for him.
B.His being born and raised there.
C.Today’s huge number of the packages.
D.The value of the deliveries to the locals.
【答案】31.C 32.A 33.A 34.D
根据第二段“The 10-kilometer-long route, which is between 20 centimeters and 1 meter wide, is known as the “cat road” by locals, meaning that it is so dangerous that only cats could walk on it.(这条路长10公里,宽20厘米到1米,被当地人称为“猫路”,意思是这条路非常危险,只有猫才能在上面走)”可知,因为这条路太窄,风险太大,只有猫才能在上面走,所以被称为“猫路”。故选C项。
32.词句猜测题。根据前文“One day in the winter of 2003, the “cat road” was covered in thick snow and he slipped off the trail.(2003年冬天的一天,“猫路”被厚厚的积雪覆盖,他滑下了小路)”在结合后文“grabbing a tree branch(抓住一根树枝)”可知,他滑下了小路,但是他抓住一根树枝,应是阻止了急剧的下降,推知descent意为“下降”之意,和A项意思相近。故选A项。
33.推理判断题。根据第一段“For nearly two decades, a thin, sun-burnt postal worker could frequently be seen carrying packages along a dangerous mountain trail in the Taihang Mountains.(近二十年来,在太行山的一条危险的山路上,经常可以看到一个瘦削的、被太阳晒得黝黑的邮递员拎着包裹)”以及第三段“Every day at the crack of dawn, he would start his journey along the “cat road”. From picking up the day’s post to delivering it to villagers and returning along the same route, it took Zhao four days. During rainy and snowy seasons, the mountain road, part of which hugs the cliffs, would become slippery and dangerous.(每天天一亮,他就沿着“猫路”出发。从取当天的邮件到把邮件送到村民手中,再沿着同一条路线返回,赵花了四天时间。在雨季和雪季,这条山道会变得很滑很危险,因为有一部分山道紧靠悬崖)”可知,赵岳芳20年来一直在太行山一条被称为“猫路”的危
险山路上投递邮件,他坚持不懈、有奉献精神,即使路线危险也不放弃,因此最能描述他的词语是“Persistent and dedicated(坚持不懈和奉献的)”。故选A项。
34.推理判断题。根据第二段“Born and raised in the deep mountains, Zhao truly understands the significance of mail deliveries to villagers. “They depend on the mail to keep in touch with the outside world,” he said. “Their sheer joy written on their face while receiving any post struck me,” he added.(在深山中出生和长大的赵真正理解给村民送邮件的意义。“他们依靠邮件与外界保持联系,”他说。他补充说:“他们在收到任何邮件时脸上写着的那种纯粹的快乐让我印象深刻。”)”可知,赵出生长大在深山,他真切理解邮件传递对于村民的重要性,所以是邮件传递的价值一直激励着赵对于工作的热情。故选D项。

12.【2024·广东部分学校·模拟预测】
My friend and I recently took an art class together through our town’s community education program. Our classmates were a mix of ages, stages of life, and experience with making art. We stood out in the class—not for our artistic talent, but for our consistent encouragement of ourselves, each other, and the group. It got me thinking how encouragement had become a routine.
It became something of a joke between the two of us to compliment(赞美) each other, offer a positive comment when another student showed his or her work, and generally chat around the table about how fun our project was going. But reflecting back, our positivist was anything but a joke. It was a bright light in my week, a space where I knew I could be surrounded with kindness, gentleness, and positivist.
Here’s the most special thing about it; my friend’s and my positive conversation wasn’t just encouraging, it was true. We didn’t go for cheap or false compliments like, “This painting should be in a museum!” Instead, we went for authentic(真实的) expressions of support and encouragement, like, “I love how you did that cloud!”
Over time, the class became something of a sacred space, because we had made a habit of using encouraging, supportive language. Sentence-starters like, “I like,” “I appreciate,” “I want to try”, kept us present, positive, and
honest.
The encouragement also kept us engaged in the work of making art. I feel sure that I learned more—and practiced more at home—because the activity was shown in such consistently positive terms, grounded in a growth mindset, self-acceptance, and encouragement.
Having a friend to share an encouragement habit is fantastic, but you can practice it on your own as pliment yourself in the mirror every morning. Keep a running “great work.” list of thing you are doing well today. Trust in your ability to find something loving—and true-to comment today and every day.

A.By showing false compliments to others.
B.By decorating their class as a museum.

40.What did the author think of the art project
A.It made him hopeful and confident.

D.It promoted his communication skills.
41.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text

Lexi is just a little girl from Canada who found herself in a heart-stopping situation. It started off as a normal car trip. Angela Shymanski, Lexi’s mom, was at the wheel, navigating the tricky roads of the Rockies with her daughter Lexi and her baby Peter in the car. An unexpected animal ran into the road. Angela swerved (突然转向) to avoid the animal. Unfortunately, their car was off the road, falling down a steep embankment (路堤).
The crash was nothing short of terrifying. Angela ended up with a broken back. She was unconscious, and unable to help her babies. Meanwhile, baby Peter’s cries echoed in the chaos. But Lexi, only five years old, didn’t freeze. Instead, she showed courage that would leave many grown-ups in awe.
She quickly jumped into action. The little girl, without even shoes on her feet, wrestled free from her seatbelt and climbed the 40-foot embankment. Once she reached the top, Lexi did everything she could to flag down a passing car in order to get help for her mom and brother.
Lexi’s insistence finally paid off. A car stopped, and the people inside didn’t hesitate to help her call for emergency services. When the paramedics (护理人员) arrived, they found Angela in a severe state, and her heart had stopped. Thankfully, they managed to bring her back.
Lexi’s dad, reflecting on the incident, couldn’t help but be amazed by his daughter’s bravery. He stressed how
important it is for kids to be prepared for emergencies, shocked at how Lexi remembered and acted on what she had been taught. It’s a powerful reminder of what kids can do when push comes to shove.

We’re often told to follow our dreams, and one person in Canada has done just that after building a wonderland for animals. In his own backyard, the eight water features which Robert Perkins dug into the ground are now a shelter for birds, frogs, beavers (河狸) and other animals in the middle of suburban development. But for Perkins, creating habitat for wildlife is not only about doing his part to help the environment. It’s a labor of love for a woman he met when he was 16 years old.
Perkins met Rhonda in 1974 and the two of them hit it off. They both loved animals, and she always wished to have a place where they could live in harmony with the land. Rhonda, whom Perkins stayed with all his life, passed away in 2006. Perkins resolved to build a wonderland where her spirit could stay in peace.
Ignoring planning departments and neighbors alike, Perkins began digging large holes for water to flow. Over the course of nine years his property went from being a neighborly headache to a perfect home for wildlife.
Perkins says he won’t take all the credit for the wetland he built. When Perkins started creating the wildlife habitat in the early 2000s, a family of beavers got wind of it soon and claimed the land. “When we built our subdivisions, we cleared all the trees, dried the hills, drove all the water down to the lakes... In turn, the beavers helped dam (筑坝) and purify the water.”
Wetland habitats not only attract wildlife, but probably offer the most complete package of ecosystem services, including preventing pollution, enriching the soil, and promoting the well-being of wildlife species.
Perkins says he doesn’t need to wonder what Rhonda might think of the place; he feels her presence whenever he walks alone among the trees, the grass, and the ponds, looking at birds or beavers, and listening to the songbirds and frogs. Perkins hopes his project will one day become an educational place that local people can visit to learn about the importance of wetlands.
52.Why did Perkins build the water features
A.To fulfill his childhood dream. B.To show his love for his wife.
C.To preserve endangered wildlife. D.To adapt to suburban development.
53.Which best describes Perkins’ wetland building process
A.Effortless but creative. B.Discouraging but efficient.
C.Painful but influential. D.Demanding but rewarding.
54.What can we infer about building the wetland from Perkins’ words
A.Perkins had a strategic plan for it. B.Human’s role in it was overvalued.
C.Nature itself also played a part in it. D.Beavers were invited to help with it.
55.What is Perkins’s expectation of the wetland
A.To help spread his story. B.To be a recreational spot.
C.To bring economic value. D.To serve as an inspiration.

1.Which language was spoken by the Vikings
A.Old Norse. B.Middle English.
C.Ancient Greek. D.Hunnir.
2.Why did Middle English disappear
A.French was a popular written language then. B.Modern English replaced Middle English.
C.Shakespeare didn’t use Middle English. D.Middle English was influenced by Old Norse.
3.Which word comes from Ancient Greek
A.Want. B.Kamos. C.Strava. D.Alphabet.

Every lab is accompanied by a curriculum created by the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto and Lang Lang, with ongoing teacher-training, financial support, and headphones, allowing group piano classes.

However, the unbearable pain continued to exist, forcing me to acknowledge that this was indeed more than just a stubborn burp,
I was particularly pleased to read afterwards in a medical textbook that renal colic, as the pain is known, is the “most painful event a person can endure, often described as being worse than childbirth”. It’s no wonder chronic
(慢性的) pain drives people mad.

One day in the
winter of 2003, the “cat road” was covered in thick snow and he slipped off the trail.

Sentence-starters like, “I like,” “I appreciate,” “I want to try”, kept us present, positive, and honest.
The encouragement also kept us engaged in the work of making art. I feel sure that I learned more—and practiced more at home—because the activity was shown in such consistently positive terms, grounded in a growth mindset, self-acceptance, and encouragement.
Having a friend to share an encouragement habit is fantastic, but you can practice it on your own as well.
Compliment yourself in the mirror every morning. Keep a running “great work.” list of thing you are doing well today. Trust in your ability to find something loving—and true-to comment today and every day.

Here are some things that you can buy as gifts for your friends who are birdwatchers. A window-mounted bird feeder
One way to guarantee a close-up look at the birds in your garden is to bring them all the way to the house. This bird feeder is solidly built with strong suction (吸) cups that you can tie to your windows, giving you a good view of your winged visitors.
A pair of binoculars
Binoculars are a birdwatcher’s best friend! They work like two small telescopes joined together, allowing you to use both eyes to see distant birds as if they were right in front of you. They’re perfect for spotting feathered friends in the wild, whether the birds are high up in the trees or soaring across the sky. When you peer through them, you get a view that makes every little detail of the birds—their colors, beaks, and even the texture of their feathers.
The Robin: A Biography by Stephen Moss
This beautifully illustrated book draws readers into the mysterious world of Britain’s favourite bird, the red robin—a familiar sight in all winter gardens, but as naturalist Stephen Moss demonstrates, one we hardly bining convincing storytelling with biological fact, Moss guides us through a year in the life of the robin, from the moment it hatches from its egg to its all too timely mortality (死亡) — the robin tends to live a mere 13 months, adding to its precious quality.

Angela swerved (突然转向) to
avoid the animal.

He stressed how important it is for kids to be prepared for emergencies, shocked at how Lexi remembered and acted on what she had been taught.
