Many years ago, my mother read from the book Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey to me. I remember as if it were yesterday, hearing her voice at my side on a cold wintry night. My mother’s voice changed my world.
Long before I could read on my own, she shared with me the strength and beauty of McCloskey’s language in a story of a little girl and her mother out in nature, co-existing with a mother bear and its baby. The power of the story, of language and of my mother all came together. And it happened many times after that, over and over. The read aloud made me a reader.
Years later, I was reading aloud a picture book to a small child in a classroom. His life, so far, had not been easy. His childhood was troubled by poverty and loneliness. In that moment, in the joy of the read aloud, he had an idea that started something big.
What he said was this: “Mrs. Allyn, let’s make sure everyone knows how good this feels. Let’s have a holiday for the read aloud.” Therefore, my organization, LitWorld, created a grassroots movement World Read Aloud Day in 2010 to honor this young boy’s wish for everyone to be able to have a read aloud every day.
Since the day he shared that good idea with us, World Read Aloud Day has become a worldwide event, reaching over one million people in more than 65 countries around the world. This year we are over 600 cities strong, a number that is growing every day.
Children who grow up as readers become engaged citizens of the global world, and every child deserves the right to read. When I say that reading aloud will change the world, I know it sounds simple. But one of the many great things about giving kids access to the power of stories and sharing them together is that it is simple. It is also cheap and easily done. And the impact is huge.

A.She read aloud to her.
B.She listened to her reading.

A.World Read Aloud Day has developed quickly.
B.This year World Read Aloud Day are over 600 cities strong.
C.World Read Aloud Day has become a worldwide event.

60.What conclusion can we draw from the last paragraph
A.Sticking to reading isn’t easy.
B.Reading aloud isn’t actually simple.
C.Reading can benefit children easily.
D.Kids should try to change the world.

A friend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me the question, “Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair ” Her question was a good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: life isn’t fair. It’s a disappointment, but it’s absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It’s not and it won’t be.
One of the nice things about surrendering(屈从)to the fact that life isn’t fair is that it keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have. We know it’s not“life’s job”to make everything perfect, it’s our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt differently; everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making decisions; and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated.
The fact that life isn’t fair doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything in our power to improve our own lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should. When we don’t recognize or admit that life isn’t fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a self-defeating emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When we do recognize that life isn’t fair, however, we feel enthusiastic for others and for ourselves. And enthusiasm is a heartfelt emotion that conveys loving-kindness to everyone it touches.
The next time you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. You may be surprised that it can make you out of self-pity and into helpful action.
61.The author thought of his friend’s question as a good one because _______.
A.like his friend, he also thought life was unfair
B.it made him recall something during his childhood
C.he also wanted to know who held such an opinion
D.he learned something from the question as a youngster
62.Surrendering to the fact that life isn’t fair will _______.
A.keep us from making everything perfect
B.keep us from doing everything in our power
C.make us face unfair treatment bravely
D.make us know it’s our duty to perfect things
63.The second paragraph of the passage mainly tells us that _______.
A.it’s nice to accept the injustice of life
B.it’s nice to surrender to the life
C.we should not surrender to the life
D.we should not feel sorry for everything
64.In the last paragraph, “this very basic fact” refers to the fact that _______.
A.you should not pity for others B.life isn’t and won’t be fair
C.compassion is heartfelt emotion D.pity is a self-defeating emotion
65.According to the author, when recognizing life injustice, you may _______.
A.take measures to solve life problem B.feel pity for other people
C.do nothing to improve our life D.receive enthusiasm from others

“I like to see people of all races, the Chinese, the Malays and the Indians, especially little children, enjoying themselves in the park. I don’t know how long I will do this as I grow old. As long as I can do what I like, I’d like to continue.” This is what Mr Lee told a news reporter when he was asked about volunteering to keep the park a clean place.
Lee Kim Siew is an 84-year-old retiree who has devoted five years of his life to cleaning up the park near his house. He works three hours every day with a plastic bag in his hand, walking back and forth around the large park. He stops every time he spots rubbish, picking it up and putting it into the plastic bag. Mr Lee is a familiar sight to those who visit the park regularly. They give a smile to the old gentleman and sometimes have a brief chat with him before leaving there.
“When I first came here, I was shocked to find rubbish was thrown everywhere. It was so smelly,” explains Mr Lee. Cigarette ends, bottles and wrappers are what he always finds. At times, he even digs a drain(下水道)with his hands to allow the water to flow from the pathways. Other times, he devotedly picks up the fallen branches and dried leaves to ensure the park is entirely clean.
It seems that his old age doesn’t deter him from doing the cleaning, although Mr Lee says his age affects his movement When he first started doing the cleaning, he came to the park six times every week. Now he only does that four to five times weekly.
The old man has also donated more than 67,00 books about environmental protection to schools in local and neighboring regions. He hopes that his efforts can help people change their bad habit of throwing things carelessly.
