(23-24九年级上·上海奉贤·期中)When Paul was a boy growing up in Utah, he happened to live near a copper smelter(炼铜厂). It made chemicals come out and made a beautiful forest become a wasteland. One day a young visitor looked at this wasteland and called it an awful area. Paul knocked him down angrily. From then on, something happened inside him.
Years later Paul was back in the area, and he went to the smelter office. He asked if they had any plans or if they would let him try to bring the trees back. The answer from that big industry was “No”.
Paul then went to college to study the science of plants. Unfortunately, his teachers said since there weren’t any birds or squirrels(松鼠) to spread the seeds, it would be a waste of his life to try to do it. He was told everyone knew that even if he was knowledgeable as he had expected, he wouldn't get his idea accepted.
Paul later got married and had some kids. But his dream would not die. And then one night he did what he could with what he had. To bring trees back to the wasteland, he went secretly into the wasteland and started planting under the cover of darkness. And every week, he made his secret journey into the wasteland and planted trees and grass.
Slowly rabbits appeared. Later, as there was legal pressure to clean up the environment, the company actually hired Paul to do what he was already doing. Now the place is fourteen thousand acres of trees and grass and bushes, and Paul has received almost every environmental award Utah has. It took him until his hair turned white to plant trees and grass, but he managed to keep that impossible vow(誓言)he made to himself as a child.

2.The copper smelter officer agreed to let Paul bring trees back at first, didn't he
3.Why did Paul’s teachers think it would be a waste of time to try to plant trees in that area
4.What did Paul do in order to bring trees back to the wasteland
5.How long did it take Paul to plant trees and grass
6.What can you learn from Paul’s story
【答案】1.It made chemicals come out and made a beautiful forest become a wasteland. 2.No, he didn’t. 3.Because there weren’t any birds or squirrels to spread the seeds. 4.He went secretly into the wasteland and planted trees and grass every week. 5.It took him until his hair turned white. 6.We should try our best and never give up.

(22-23九年级上·上海普陀·期末)根据短文内容回答问题。
Is it possible to listen to too much music
I love music so much that I decided to study it in college. I’m earning a doctoral degree (博士学位) in music history, for which I have researched everything from early classical music to 20th-century music.
I always have my headphones on. I listen to music while taking a walk. I listen to pop songs while answering emails.
I miss out on a lot around me by listening to music all of the time, however. I might not hear the sound of birds outside my window or the sound of the wind. Or the conversations of my family enjoying one another’s company right outside my closed door.
Apart from causing you to miss out on all the sounds that surround you, generally speaking, listening to music does not harm your body. It does not damage your liver, poison your lungs or fry your brain.
There are, however, exceptions.
For instance, you can damage your ears if you listen to music that is too loud for long periods of time. The World Health Organization estimates that around 50 percent of teenagers and young adults listen to music at unsafe levels. The WHO has concluded that people can withstand (承受) 85 decibels (分贝) continuously for eight hours without damaging their hearing.
Anyone who plays music regularly or attends concerts needs to take extra caution as well. Several rock stars from the 1970s and 1980s have spoken out for years about their experience with hearing loss and tinnitus (耳鸣)
Their condition resulted from rehearsing (排练) and performing for long periods of time at loud volumes (音量). The average concert often exceeds (超过) 100 decibels, and the WHO notes that such sound levels can begin to damage one's ears after only 15 minutes.
Most musicians rehearse and perform for more than 15 minutes. And most concerts last at least an hour. The solution, then, is to take precautions (预防措施).
I carry earplugs (耳塞) everywhere. They can cut out up to 21 decibels of noise. I put my earplugs in while rehearsing or attending shows, or whenever I need to relax in a noisy environment. Other people rarely notice.
Sound of Metal, a movie released in 2019, shows a drummer’s experience with hearing loss. It is a serious reminder of the importance of protecting your hearing.

Finally, under a cloudy, moonless sky, the train pulled into the train station. “Hold hands and stay together,” Kassie’s mom waned as they got off the train and made their way out of the station. During their short ride to their new home, Kassie noticed how whites and blacks kept their distance. Even on the bus, they were forced to sit at the back; meanwhile, the whites took the front seats. Kassie couldn’t stop thinking of this strange behavior.
She hoped it would be slightly different at school.
Two days later, Kassie got her answer. She entered her classroom and was surprised to find so many white children already seated. She looked for a black child, but saw none, so she decided to find a seat.
“What are you doing ” a red-haired girl asked. Kassie looked at her puzzled, not sure how to reply. “Blacks sit on the back of the room,” the girl said, pointing a finger towards the broken desks at the back of the classroom. Kassie looked at the collection of desks and frowned. Most were broken, and their surfaces were covered with dust and pencil drawings. Kassie hoped that there would be other black children in the class, but as the bell rang, no other children showed up. When the teacher introduced Kassie to the class, everyone looked at her as if she was an alien.
The rest of the week wasn’t any better. Kassie considered asking her parents more than once to let her move back home with her grandparents. But again, the idea of being respectful and grateful kept her quiet.
Boston was a gray city with tall buildings and few trees. There were a few sunny days, and the air was cold. Kassie missed the open countryside, the tall trees, colourful flowers and blue skies. Most of all, she missed her friends and grandparents.

(2023·上海浦东新·三模)Answer the following questions. (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
A major development to self-driving cars may change the way we will drive in the future. Google, the leading company in self-driving technology, has changed its development plan. It had driverless cars built by car factories, but now will start building its own cars.
Google has started to build some kinds of experimental electric self- driving cars that look like a Smart car or Fiat 500. There is no steering wheel (方向盘),gas pedal (油门) or brake (刹车). The only thing a human passenger controls is a red “e-stop” button for fear stops and a start button. The car’s only “friendly” face is designed to make it help people accept self-driving technology.
Google workers took part in a long experiment, in which they used self-driving cars for their usual travel to work. No accident happened, but Google’s heads realized that depending on a human passenger to drive in an emergency wouldn’t work because they may be reading, working, or sleeping. Now the self-driving car drives by itself if the driver takes his hands off the wheel for over ten seconds.
Google’s self-driving cars are now limited to a speed of 25 miles per hour for safety reasons. The cars aren’t allowed to drive on highways. However, a Google engineer said that once the cars are solved to run safely, we can drive at the speed of 50, even 80 miles an hour.
Google recently announced that its cars had covered 700,000 miles of public roads, and they were now running in busy city streets. People who love self-driving cars say this will improve transport by making roads safer, cutting down accident, and making less pollution.

35.How fast can we drive a self-driving car at the moment
36.Would you like to drive such a cute self-driving car to work in the future Why (Give at least two reasons.)
【答案】31.Yes, it is. 32.The only thing a human passenger controls is a red “e-stop” button for fear stops and a start button. 33.Because it can help people accept self-driving technology. 34.It will drive by itself. 35.25 miles per hour. 36.Yes, I’d like to drive it. Because it will improve transport by making roads safer, cutting down accident, and making less pollution.

Every three minutes, a child is born with a clef lip. Children with these conditions[1] have terrible problems with eating, drinking and speaking and one in ten of them die before their first birthday. The luckier ones live, but they are often rejected by friends and sometimes even by their own family.
In rich countries, simple surgeries[3] can correct most of these mouth problems and allow children to live normal lives. But in poorer countries, the operations are too expensive for ordinary people and there are not enough doctors who can do them.
In 1982, American doctor Bill Magee and his wife Kathy, a nurse, went to the Philippines to do some cleft lip surgeries. But it was a short trip and there was no time to help all the children who needed surgery. They felt terribly guilty. When they got home, they started a new charity. They called it Operation Smile.
Now Operation Smile works in more than sixty countries. Five thousand volunteers give their time and skills to provide free mouth surgery to the children who need it most. The charity also provides medical equipment and trains local doctors to do the surgery themselves. In this way, the results of an Operation Smile visit continue long into the future.
When an international group of doctors and nurses travels to a country, two secondary school students go, too. The students are usually people who have done a lot of fundraising[4] in their local area and told a lot of people about the work of Operation Smile. Their trip is a fantastic way to experience a completely different culture and help to change lives forever.

One day a police officer managed to get some fresh mushrooms. He was so pleased with what he had bought that he offered to share the mushrooms with his fellow officers. When their breakfast arrived the next day, each officer found some mushrooms on his plate.
One officer looked at the mushrooms carefully and then suggested, “They look nice, but I heard that some mushrooms might be poisonous(有毒的). Let’s get Jimmy to examine a piece for us.” Jimmy was the dog they kept. They brought it in, and fed it one piece of mushroom. The dog quickly ate it, and seemed to enjoy his mushroom. Fifteen minutes later, Jimmy was still alive and kicking without showing any discomfort. The officers were relieved(放心的)and began to eat their meal, saying that the mushrooms had a very strange but quite pleasant taste.
However, an hour later, the gardener rushed into the room and reported in a sad voice that the dog was dead. The officers were astonished and their faces turned white out of fear. While carrying your schoolbag on the way to school or home, does the heavy weight of your books make you less interested to learn knowledge Don’t worry. E-readers may help you say goodbye to your heavy schoolbag.
An e-reader has the memory space to hold hundreds of books. So people want to replace heavy schoolbags with small, light e-readers. For example, Cushing Academy, a high school in Massachusetts, US, got rid of most of the 20,000 books in its library last summer. The head of the library said that the school was going to replace printed books with e-books. Teachers and students will use e-readers instead.
Most e-readers are thin and weigh less than 500g. They can download an e-book within 60 seconds. “It’s so convenient. You can have so many books right at your fingertips!” said Meghan Chenausky, 16.
Chinese schoolchildren are also trying e-readers. At the 2020 Shanghai Book Fair, an e-schoolbag was on show. It is a special e-reader that students can use to download textbooks from the school servers. It can also send and receive homework.
Some schools in Beijing and Shanghai have tried this e-schoolbag for a few years. “It’s excellent. I don’t have to carry a heavy schoolbag anymore,” said Xiao Qi, 15, Beijing. “And it’s eco-friendly because it saves paper.”
New generation e-readers have many functions (功能) besides reading, such as Wi-Fi and multimedia. However, some parents worry that these functions may have a bad influence on their children’s study habits. “I think Wi-Fi is not necessary for kids,” says Zeng Wenwen, 43, Beijing.

Christmas was so close, and so was Ann’s birthday. She wished she could get a new dress with frills (荷叶边) and lace (蕾丝) as a wonderful Christmas gift. But Ann did not want to ask her mom for that. She knew how hard her mom worked to make a living. Maybe she could make a wish — maybe Santa Claus (圣诞老人) would come...
At school her classmates were talking only about Christmas celebrations. “My rich aunt is surely going to give me a pretty doll again,” said Ria.
“I have been hinting (暗示) about that costly watch to my parents,” told Tessie.
Ann felt out of these conversations. She had neither rich parents nor wealthy aunts to give her expensive gifts.
It was not just the gift that worried Ann. It was her mother. Recently she was working overtime and looked pale and worn out.

A lot of students from different countries are talking about how schools and parents connect now. Here is a part of their talks.
In my school, parent-school communication is mostly done through emails. This lets parents know what is happening at their child’s school. To improve parent-teacher communication, Parent Breakfasts are organized at the beginning of the school year, and it enables parents to meet the head teacher and subject teachers of their child this year. Parent Evenings also take place each term to let parents know their child’s progress in school. There is not a parent committee ( 委员会) at my school but parents can be part of the Friends group. They can help organize school events. Peter from America At my school, parents and teachers keep in touch in many ways. One of them is the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). The PTA is a voluntary organization that brings parents and teachers together to discuss and deal with problems with school education. The PTA usually meets once or twice a term and lets parents know their children’s teachers better. Another way of communication is through parent-teacher meetings. They let parents and teachers meet face-to-face to discuss a student’s progress and performance. Lily from China
Communications go both ways here, allowing both the school and parents to discuss concerns or ask questions. These meetings are planned one-on-one for privacy. They serve to avoid making students or parents feel uncomfortable if the school needs to talk about certain problems, such as a student’s performance. While meetings can be planned at any time, the most common are the end-of-term reports. Each term has 8-10 weeks for students to attend school. My summer hols wr CWOT. B4, WE USED 2go 2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3:-@KIDS FTF. ILNY, its gr8.
Can you understand this sentence If you can’t, don’t feel too bad: neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on Internet or cellphones. If you read Netspeak for the first time, it looks like an unrecognizable foreign language. So, what is the “translation” of the sentence above My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York; it’s great.
School teachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students’ writing. They fear the language could become corrupted (面目全非的).
Everyone should just relax, say linguists. They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nunberg, from Stanford University, agrees. “People get better at writing by writing,” he says. “Kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mail, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than their parents. ”
Linguist James Milroy says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are harming the language. And you can be sure that when today’s teenagers become tomorrow’s parents, they will think this way, too. Milroy argues that languages do not and cannot become “corrupted”; they simply change to meet the new needs.
However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write standard English. Cynthia McVey says, “I can understand Netspeak worries teachers and it’s important to make their pupils understand that text messaging is for fun, but that to learn to write proper English is necessary for their future.”
Perhaps, we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, age 12, says, “I wouldn’t use text language in my homework. Text is just for fun.”

If you wake up with a cough and a sore throat, you can go to the doctor. But when the soil is sick, it is not able to tell anyone! This is the concept that made the EPA take action. They formed a group of professional soil doctors to monitor the health of dirt.
Healthy soil is essential because it allows plants and animals to grow well. Healthy soil also prevent poisonous chemicals, holds water and gives some wastes time to be destroyed. But its ability to do these things is not unlimited. That’s when a soil doctor is needed.
As the world’s economies and certain industries grow, so does soil pollution. Sources of this pollution include waste from factories and farms and household garbage as well as agricultural waste. Water often carries poisonous chemical from this waste into the fields where they work their way into the soil. These chemicals can cause plants to produce food that is harmful or prevents crops from growing at all.
People need to be on the lookout for soil pollution to protect themselves and others. In 1984 in Taoyuan County, a chemical company let out wastewater into a rice field. In order to keep people from eating the poisonous rice, all of the crops had to be destroyed.
In situations where soil is polluted, the first step soil doctors take is to stop the farming of the land. The EPA then treats the soil so that it can be used again. Some types of treatment take place onsite in the field and some are offsite. Eventually, crops can be planted again in the soil, but it could be years before that happens.
Soil doctors can treat “sick” soil, but they prefer to prevent soil pollution. They try to manage the risk of pollution by testing dirt regularly. Soil doctors play an important role in preventing poisonous chemicals from harming plants, animals and people. But ordinary people can do their part by _____________________.

91.When does soil need to see a doctor
92.What usually causes the soil pollution
93.Without the help of soil doctors, what may happen
94.Soil treatment is time consuming, isn’t it
95.What responsibility should ordinary people take for keeping soil healthy Complete the sentence in the last paragraph.

1.What did the copper smelter do to a beautiful forest near Paul’s hometown

3.Why did Paul’s teachers think it would be a waste of time to try to plant trees in that area
4.What did Paul do in order to bring trees back to the wasteland
5.How long did it take Paul to plant trees and grass

We should learn some tips on how to use the internet safely. Have you ever clicked a strange link online Is the password of your game account (账户) safe enough Do you remember to log off (退出登录) after using public computers
You may think these aren’t problems. But they can make big trouble! You may lose money, get disturbed by others, or even take part in crimes without knowing. September 5 to 11 is China Network Security Week. Let’s learn more about the importance of internet safety.
Protect yourself
Cybercriminals (网络罪犯) can break into your smart phone or computer. They put a virus (病毒) on it through a link. Then they steal your gaming account and get money from it. They can also sell your name, address and ID card number to underground markets. Then you might get lots of scam calls (诈骗电话). So, don’t click on strange links. Make your password strong enough. Ask for help when you are not sure.
Keep the country safe
Internet safety is important to a country, too. Northwestern Polytechnical University (西北工业大学) is a top university in Xi’an, Shanxi province. It is famous for its study of space. In April, the university said someone broke into their information system. Teachers and students got emails with a virus in them. More than 140GB of the school’s important data was stolen.
It is a serious reminder of the importance of protecting your hearing.

.
14.What did the author miss out on because of her listening to music all the time

15.According to the WHO, is it safe for a person to listen to music for five hours a day at 70 decibels

Immediately, they jumped into their cars and rushed to the nearest hospital. The doctors and nurses used pumps(吸物器)to help them get rid of the mushrooms that remained in their stomachs. Everyone had a hard time.
When they returned to the police station, they sat down and started to discuss the mushroom poisoning. Each man explained the pains he had felt and they agreed that it had grown worse on their way to the hospital. “The poor dog must have died a painful death,” said one officer. “Let’s ask the gardener how it died.”
So they called the gardener in and asked him more details about Jimmy’s death. The gardener sighed and said, “Jimmy was a good dog. It is said that a car hit him in the middle of the road. But I guess it didn’t suffer much. It died the moment it was hit.”

Have you been to the school library lately If you have, you’ve probably noticed that there is plenty of room for improvement. Something needs to be done to improve the school library.
The government and school leaders are all calling for better readers. They say that kids these days just don’t read enough! They say they watch too much television and play too many computer games. Well, if the adults want students to read more, they need to do their part to help the kids read.
When is the last time you spent time in the school library You’ve probably noticed that there isn’t a very good selection of books. The collection of books is small, and the books on the shelves are old and outdated. The books have been falling apart (散开的) for a long time. It is not very fun to read a book that is missing pages or is torn or has dirty marks on it.
Not only are the books old, but they are also very outdated. There isn’t a single book in the library that was written in the last 10 years. There have been so many new authors and new books that are great! Why can’t the students in this school have access to these great books The school has got to put its money where its mouth is.

Last year a boy of four was visiting the museum named Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich with his family when he accidentally knocked the historical jug which was worth up to $2000 off a window ledge(边缘). The jug was broken into 65 pieces and the boy was extremely upset. Later a duty officer took many hours to repair it.
Is his family facing a heavy fine or needing to pay the repairs No, the museum staff told the boy that the jug had been fixed and that all was well now.
Yesterday a museum spokesman said: “We have received a call from the boy’s mother who told us the little boy and his family were delighted that the jug had been repaired but they wished to remain anonymous(匿名的). ”
Many people wrote letters to the editor to show their opinions. Below are some of them.
To the editor The fault(错误)here lies with the museum. They should have made sure that the jug was in a secure place where it could not be knocked over. If they have people walking through the museum, they should set up the exhibitions in such a way that they are safe. They are being careless with important historical artifacts(人工艺术品) From Tom London, UK To the editor Parents do not teach children how to behave these days. When we were children, we weren’t allowed to touch anything. It is not the responsibility of the museum to put everything into cabinets(展览柜). The aim of Christchurch Mansion Museum is that the items are seen where they would have been in the house as in the past. It is the PARENTS’ responsibility to teach the children what to do. The parents were lazy and careless. From Sara New York, USA
To the editor How happy to read good news! A wonderful job was done repairing the jug, but even better is that museum staff cared more about the boy than the jug.

Ann checked the gift carefully to find out who had given her this beautiful dress. Suddenly a small piece of paper fell out from the dress.
Dear Ann,This dress is gifted to you for being a good girl. Hope you continue to do good things and help your mother. Your Loving friend, Santa Claus

Their teachers use the information collected to provide feedback to families in about 10-15 minutes. Students often attend these meetings, too. Jack from Australia

90.What action did the EPA take to help soil
91.When does soil need to see a doctor
92.What usually causes the soil pollution
93.Without the help of soil doctors, what may happen
94.Soil treatment is time consuming, isn’t it
95.What responsibility should ordinary people take for keeping soil healthy Complete the sentence in the last paragraph.

Face to the Sunshine
“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows” is a popular saying. It encourages people to make the best of a situation, to see the “bright side” of things. It calls attention to the way sunflowers follow the sun during the day. People have known about this phenomenon (现象) for a long time. Recently scientists have discovered how this works. They know why sunflowers keep their “faces” to the sunshine.
Sunflowers move and respond to their environment. These flowers actually face the sun as it rises in the east and follow it as it moves across the sky until it sets in the west. Just like people, these flowers depend on the daily rhythms (节奏) of the day and night. Both the sunflowers and human beings wake up in the morning, follow the sun all day and then rest at night.
During the day, young sunflower plants track the sun from east to west. The green flower head turns towards the sun. At night, the young plants turn east waiting for the sun to rise in the morning. Adult sunflowers don’t move. Once the flower is open, it faces only east. Scientists have discovered that this movement and lack of movement has to do with uneven (不均匀的) growth in the plant stems. One side of the stem gets bigger during the day, and at night the other side gets bigger. Certain genes (基因) control this growth. They respond to the light and cause the flowers to turn to face the sun.
Scientists have found that young sunflowers that follow the sun have more biomass (生物量) —that means that they get bigger. Adult plants facing the east get warmer. That in turn attracts more bees and other insects that will help pollinate(授粉) the plant. This means that the plant can produce seeds and has a better chance of reproducing.
96.The material above is a news report, isn’t it
97.What do sunflowers usually do during the day
98.Why do both sunflowers and human beings depend on the daily rhythms of the day and night
99.When do the young sunflower plants turn to face the east
100.According to scientists, what causes the movement and lack of movement of the sunflowers
101.Do you like to be young sunflowers or adult sunflowers Give your reason(s).

About 30, 000 people are running today in the world’s oldest annual marathon. Four figures have found their own special kinds of victory along those 42.2 kilometers in Boston.
“Dad, when we’re running, my disability seems to disappear. ” Rick Hoyt was born unable to use his voice, arms or legs. Doctors advised his parents to send him away, but they chose to raise Rick themselves. One day Rick said he wanted to run in a race to raise money to help support a wounded schoolmate. So his father, Dick Hoyt, started pushing Rick in a specially-built wheelchair in races. Together they completed 32 Boston Marathons. A statue of “Team Hoyt” now stands near the marathon’s starting line. In 2021, Dick Hoyt died. Speaking through his computer, Rick said, “He was my motor; I was his heart ”
“Women aren’t allowed and …are not physiologically able. ” Bobbi Gibb loved running in 1966 when she applied for the Boston Marathon. Determined to run the race, Bobbi hid in some bushes, wearing her brother’s shorts and a hoodie. After the marathon began, she sneaked (潜行) onto the course and finished faster than two-thirds of the men.
“I’m going to finish this race—on my hands and knees, if I have to. ” One year later, Kathrine Switzer entered for the race with her initials (姓名的首字母) to hide her gender (性别). During the marathon, an angry official stopped her and tried to tear (撕下) her racing numbers off her front and back! Kathrine was frightened but made up her mind to continue her race. When some reporters laughed at her and said she was never going to run again, she said she was going to run for the rest of her life! Switzer did finish the race becoming the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon. Five years later, the Boston Marathon finally allowed women. Today 45 percent of the runners are women.
Dick and Rick, Bobbi and Kathrine are often called “trailblazers (开拓者). ” But another word might be better: champions (冠军).
