教学目标
By the end of the class, students will be able to talk about the plan for the winter vacation by creating a checklist. This will be achieved by the following objectives. 1. Obtain the basic information about Lao She Teahouse and get the details of Betty and Lingling’s visit in Lao She Teahouse through listening. 2. Comb the listening material and summarize the checklist to talk about the plan for the winter vacation. 3. Be aware of the cultural connotation on Lao She Teahouse.

Teaching focuses Summarize the checklist and talk about the plan for the winter vacation. Anticipated difficulty Summarize the checklist according to the listening material. Several questions are set to help students understand how Betty introduced her visit in Lao She Teahouse with the infinitives (plan, want, decide, offer, hope), and guide them to analyze how Betty expressed her feelings about the Beijing Opera with the stress. By doing so, students could summarize the checklist by themselves.

Activity 1 Guessing game The teacher welcomes the students and introduces he wants to go to Beijing during the winter vacation. Then Students guess what the teacher plans to do in Beijing during the winter vacation by using the following sentence pattern. —Do you plan to... during the winter vacation In the end, the teacher tells students he wants to visit Lao She Teahouse. Activity 2 Watch and say Students watch some pictures and say what people can do in Lao She Teahouse. Some expressions like drink tea, have some local food, watch the Beijing Opera, listen to the traditional music, watch the tea show, enjoy the magic show are presented. Then students answer the following question. What do you want/plan to do in Lao She Teahouse Activity 3 Listen and answer Students listen to the Conversation 1 and answer the following question. According to the conversation, what can Lingling and Betty do in Lao She Teahouse Answer They can listen to the traditional Beijing Opera and drink tea. After that, students answer the questions “Who wants to see the Beijing Opera ” and “Is the Beijing Opera easy or difficult for Lingling to understand ” to get better understanding of the conversation. Activity 4 Listen and complete Students listen to the Conversation 2 and complete the table so that they can get the details of Betty and Lingling’s visit in Lao She Teahouse. Meanwhile, students get the meaning of the expression “offer to do” in context. Next, students answer the following two questions. Did Betty understand the Beijing Opera 2. Why did Betty stay for three hours The teacher observes whether students could talk about the teacher’s plan for the winter vacation with the given sentence pattern. At the same time, the teacher gives the necessary guidance and feedback according to the situation. The teacher evaluates whether students have got basic information about Lao She Teahouse. The teacher evaluates whether students have got basic understanding of Betty and Lingling’s visit in Lao She Teahouse through students’ answers.
Intention: To arouse students’ interest and to help them get prepared for the topic directly; To help students obtain the basic information about Lao She Teahouse; To help students get basic understanding of Betty and Lingling’s visit in Lao She Teahouse.
2. Comb the listening material and summarize the checklist to talk about the plan for the winter vacation. 3. Be aware of the cultural connotation on Lao She Teahouse. Activity 5 Read and underline Students read the listening material of the Conversation 2 and underline the sentences that show Betty is interested in the Beijing Opera. I want to see the Beijing Opera. But the actors and actresses were excellent. We stayed for three hours. It was interesting - that’s the main thing. I hope to understand more next time. Activity 6 Listen and imitate The following sentences are presented first. Students listen to the recording of the first sentence and pay attention to the stress. Then, students read the rest of sentences and predict which words are stressed in any sentence. After that, students check the answers and imitate the stress. Activity 6 Role play Students work in pairs and act out the conversation. Activity 7 Think and discuss Students analyze the listening material and think about the question. Activity 8 Read and complete Students read through the passage written by Betty and complete the passage on their own. Then students underline some infinitives (plan, want, decide, offer, hope) when Betty introduced her visit in Lao She Teahouse. Activity 9 Summarize the checklist After finishing the former activities, students summarize the checklist of how to talk about the plan for the winter vacation. 1. Use plan, want, decide, offer, and hope to talk about the plan for the winter vacation. 2. Stress some words to show feelings. The teacher observes whether students could underline the sentences that show Betty is interested in the Beijing Opera. The teacher observes whether students could elicit which words are stressed in the following sentences, for example, nouns, verbs and adjectives because these are the main words which contain the important information in the sentence. The teacher observes whether students could act out the conversation successfully. The teacher observes whether students could analyze the cultural connotation on Lao She Teahouse. The teacher observes whether students could complete the passage with the correct form of the words. The teacher observes whether students could summarize the checklist from both the infinitives and the stress.
Intention: To help students get further understanding of Betty and Lingling’s visit in Lao She Teahouse by answering questions; To help student know about the importance of the stress; To lead students think critically and encourage them to express their thoughts and ideas; To consolidate what they’ve learned and help them get ready for the final activity.
4. Talk about the plan for the winter vacation. Activity 10 Talk about the plan for the winter vacation Students talk about their plans for the winter vacation by answering the following questions. After presenting, students evaluate their introductions according to the checklist. 1. What do you plan to do during the winter vacation 2. Where do you want to go 3. How do you decide to get there 4. Who offers to take you there 5. What do you hope to do The teacher observes whether students could use the checklist to talk about the plan for the winter vacation and to evaluate their introductions in class presentations. Meanwhile, the teacher gives the necessary guidance and feedback according to the situation.
Intention: To help students use language in the real situations. By the end of the class, students will be able to talk about their plans for the winter vacation.
Homework: Must-do: 1. Read the passage on the worksheet to know more about Lao She Teahouse. 2. Talk about the plan for the winter vacation with your classmates. Choose-to-do: Write a short passage to introduce your plan for the winter vacation.
