In 1674, I was born on my father’s small farm in Nottinghamshire, England. I was the third of five sons. My childhood was very happy. I liked going to school and learning new things. But I often used to daydream about going to sea.
One day, Father asked, “Lemuel, have you thought about your future I think you would be a good doctor.”
I wanted to please him, so I said, “Yes, Father. I’ll go to Cambridge University and study medicine.” But as I spoke I was thinking, “At university I can also learn things that will be useful to a sailor.”
After several years of study, I became a doctor. Not long after, I asked my sweetheart, Mary, to marry me. Before long, we had children, a boy and a girl. They gave us great joy. I enjoyed being a doctor for the first few years. But then I became bored, and ideas of travel filled my mind. I imagined going to far-off places and seeing wonderful new things.
“Mary,” I said one day, “I need more adventure in my life. The captain of a ship about to sail has offered me a job as the ship’s doctor. I don’t know how long the journey will lake, but I promise I will return. And when I do, I’ll tell you and the children all about my adventures.”
So in 1699, I set sail on the Antelope from Bristol. That city is a large and very old port (港口) in the southwest of England. The captain was a good man and had sailed a great deal!
“Welcome aboard. Doctor Gulliver,” he said, “First we’ll be sailing down the Atlantic Ocean and around the coast of Africa. Then we’ll sail through the Indian Ocean to the South Seas.” Our journey went well until one morning, somewhere near Tasmania in the South Pacific Ocean.
“I don’t like the look of those clouds,” the captain said, “I think a storm is coming.”
Within an hour, a big storm began. The sea rose in great, angry waves much taller than the Antelope. The wind, now as strong as a hurricane, made a terrible sound.
“The wind is blowing the ship off course!” shouted the captain. “Look out!”

Zheng He, the Columbus (哥伦布) of the East, was an amazing man. He is the most important Chinese adventurer of all time and one of the greatest sailors the world has ever known.
He was born in Yunnan Province in 1371 and his parents named him Ma Sanbao. Eleven years later, a rich young man called Zhu Di caught him. Over time the rich man saw that Zheng He was very clever and strong and they became close friends. In 1403 Zhu Di became the King of China and he asked Zheng He to join his new government and gave him a new name—Zheng He.
The King wanted to learn more about the world and show other countries his power. He ordered people to build many new ships and made Zheng He their leader. Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng He travelled to different parts of the world. He certainly travelled to India, Africa and the Middle East. A few people think his ships may have even reached South America and Australia. Each trip lasted between two and four years and it is believed he sailed more than 50,000 kms during the years of his travels. With 28,000 men and over 300 ships, such as boats for food, water and even horses, Zheng He’s fleet (船队) was much smaller than Europeans’ for over 500 years.
On these trips he brought with him many Chinese goods like silk and medicine to give to foreign kings or to sell for local goods. He returned from each trip with boats filled with expensive things such as gold and jewellery, foreign guests and strange animals like a giraffe. It is a pity that we may never learn everything about Zheng He’s travels. After he died in 1433, the new king, who believed these trips were unlucky and too expensive, ordered them to stop the travels and he burned almost all the books about Zheng He’s travels. It is only in the last 50 years that historians have begun to carefully study the adventures of the great Zheng He.
52. Why did the Chinese King want Zheng He to sail to many different countries

a. Zhu Di became the King.
b. A young rich man caught Zheng He.
c. The new king burned all the books about Zheng He.

A. e, b, a, f, d, c B. b, a, e, d, c, f C. f, a, b, d, c, e D. b, a, f, e, d, c
55. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. In fact, Zheng He is the first man who reached Australia.
B. The countries Zheng He visited welcomed his fleet.
C. Zheng He’s fleet was as big as Columbus’s.

八、阅读下面短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题 (本大题共5分)
You may have seen such a photo: with a long white beard (胡须) and wearing a bamboo hat, an old fisherman sits on a boat. Huang Quande looked like this when tourists took photos with him on the Lijiang River in Guilin, Guangxi. He became so famous online that many believed the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan renminbi banknote (纸币) was based on him. Sadly, Huang died at the age of 94 on Feb 1, 2023.
Huang gave up fishing and became a photo model in 2008. He showed the true spirit (精神) of Lijiang River—being positive and friendly. In his 90s, Huang could still move his boat with speed.
The image of the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan banknote is not just about one man. Instead, it is a cultural symbol of Guilin landscape (风景) commented Guangming Daily.
In fact, the different backsides of the fifth series of renminbi banknotes show the most iconic (标志性的) landscapes in China. Each of them carries its own cultural value. For example on the back of the 5-yuan banknote is Mount Tai in Shandong. In ancient times many emperors would go there and pray (祈祷) for the country. On the back of the 1-yuan banknote are the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭映月) in West Lake, Zhejiang. It is a great place for moon watchers during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Because of the renminbi pictures, these places have attracted more tourists than before. Following the banknotes from 1 yuan to 100, Pan Jinyu from Chongqing had a “banknote tour” when he was 21. “I want to finish a ceremonial (有仪式感的) journey and feel the beauty of our country” Pan told Chongqing Economic Times.

九、书面表达
Dear Peter,
I’m very happy to share my ideas about reading with you.
Now most students have much homework to do every day. As a result, they don’t have good reading habits. Moreover, they spend much time playing computer games and chatting on the Internet in their spare time. Every day I read books for about half an hour, and I like reading history books best.
I think reading can help us get knowledge, so we should spend as much time as we can reading and read more good books. Reading can not only make us clever and smart but also help us get more knowledge. And it’s also helpful to make us grow happily. Good books help us relax after a busy day. They also open up a whole new world to us.
In my opinion, reading is always a wonderful time. The more books we read, the better we will become.
Your,
Li Ming
