Have you ever heard an English idiom(习语),understood every word used in it,but still been confused about what it meant? Don’t worry.Native speakers experience this too.And there’s a good reason for it:Idioms get their meanings from how they are used. Here are some of the strangest English idioms.
If someone tells you that something really“gets their goat”,it doesn’t mean that a farm animal has been stolen! Instead,it means that something terrible really annoys them. While it’s not certain, some people believe this phrase comes from a horse racing tradition in which people would keep goats with horses before a race to keep them calm.
Another strange animal donkey’s phrase is“donkey’s years”,used in British English to describe a very long time. This expression may come from a joke about the ears of a donkey, which are quite long.“Donkey’s ears” was changed to “donkey’s years” for talking about time.
The phrase“cold turkey” has got nothing to do with the bird,or its temperature.Instead,to go “cold turkey” means stopping using or doing something suddenly. For instance,Jim ate too much junk food and gained a lot of weight as a result. Finally,he just went cold turkey. It’s possible that the phrase comes from an older sense of “cold” which means “straight forward”,and “talk turkey”,a 19th century phrase about talking plainly.

Rabbits are gentle and quiet animals, but Chinese people think that rabbits are the symbol of being smart and lovely. In Chinese culture, rabbits can be used to stand for the moon.Ancient Chinese believed there was a rabbit living on the moon. The rabbit, also called the Jade Rabbit or the Moon Rabbit in China,is a companion(同伴) of Chang’e.People could see it on the full moon on Mid-Autumn Day.Though scientists proved the rabbit never lived on the moon, its lucky meaning never faded.
Besides,Chinese people believed the more children they had,the luckier and happier they would be.And rabbits can reproduce(繁殖) in large numbers in a short time,so ancient Chinese people saw the rabbit as a good sign. Now,it is still a popular idea that the rabbit is a good sign of a long life.
Western people also see the rabbit as a sign of good luck. They believe a rabbit’s feet can bring good luck to its owner. In old traditional hunting games,if a teenage hunter caught a rabbit, they could get the animal’s back feet as a prize.Rabbits also show up in other areas of Western culture. It is a rabbit that Alice follows in the story of Alice in Wonderland to escape the normal world and it helps to begin her adventure.
