There was a time when New York City buildings were almost all the same height. Today you can see buildings of different heights that seem to touch the sky. They are called skyscrapers (摩天大楼). They shape the famous New York City skyline.

But the race was not over. A year later, in 1931, the Empire State Building became the new winner. At 1,250 feet, it was the world’s tallest building.
In 1973, even that record was broken. Builders finished the twin towers of the World Trade Center. At 1,368 feet high, they rose above all other buildings in New York City.

I’ve finally arrived in Sydney. It has been a long journey.
Yesterday morning, I got a taxi to take me to the airport. I had to check in two hours before the time on my ticket. I gave the airline my luggage, and got my boarding pass. Then I had to go through security check. There, a serious airport staff checked inside my other bags. After that, I still had an hour left, so I looked around some shops in the airport. I bought myself a magazine and some snacks for the trip.
I had never been on a plane before, so once I sat down I listened carefully to all the safety instructions. Then the plane took off. I was close to a window. I was able to watch the ground slowly disappear through the clear window. However, soon all I could see were clouds, so it wasn’t very interesting.
The journey took fourteen hours, all the way from Los Angeles to Sydney. I got meals and watched a couple of films on the plane. When I arrived, I had to remember the time difference—the time in Sydney is seventeen hours ahead of Los Angeles, and I had to change my watch from midnight to 17:00 next day. I nearly missed a whole day!
After I landed and got off the plane, I went to find my bags. I was happy because I found my luggage quite quickly. The woman next to me on the plane was not so lucky—her luggage was sent to a different country! She was very upset.
I took the bus into Sydney, as the airport is almost an hour away from the city center. I then had to carry my heavy luggage down onto the underground, and travel several stops to get to my hotel.
Once I got into my room, I lay down on the bed. This must be caused by jet lag—the feeling you get when your body thinks it is one time in the day, but in fact it isn’t.
Now I am going to sleep after spending nearly half a day traveling. I think I am really going to enjoy my holiday in Sydney.

There was a time when New York City buildings were almost all the same height. Today you can see buildings of different heights that seem to touch the sky. They are called skyscrapers (摩天大楼). They shape the famous New York City skyline.

A big party was held to celebrate its victory.
A few weeks later, New Yorkers saw a strange sight. The day that the Chrysler Building was to be completed, workers raised a shiny metal spire (尖顶) through the top of the building, adding 121 feet to the building’s height! At 1,048 feet, the Chrysler Building was now the world’s tallest.
But the race was not over. A year later, in 1931, the Empire State Building became the new winner. At 1,250 feet, it was the world’s tallest building.
In 1973, even that record was broken. Builders finished the twin towers of the World Trade Center. At 1,368 feet high, they rose above all other buildings in New York City.
Time goes on. As technology improves, taller buildings are being built. The race is still on.

I’ve finally arrived in Sydney. It has been a long journey.
