Han Yong, a Senior 1 student, was feeling very discouraged because of his failure in mid-term exams. He was not as active in answering his teachers’ questions as before. Meanwhile, when communicating with classmates, he avoided eye contact with them. His friends and classmates were all worried about him, but he didn’t feel like talking with them about it. Ms. Gao, his English teacher, noticed his changes and made a decision to help him.
One day, Ms. Gao walked into the classroom and gave her students a surprise test. They waited at the desks for the test, anxious. After handing out the question papers with the text facing down as usual, she asked the students to turn the page and begin. Surprisingly, no questions were on the page, just a black dot (点) in the center. Seeing the surprised expression on everyone’s face, Ms. Gao told them the following: “Write what you see there.”
The students, though puzzled, worked on the task.
Ten minutes later, with all the answer papers collected, Ms.Gao began reading them aloud in front of all the students. All of them described the black dot, explaining its position, etc. Then Ms. Gao picked out Han Yong’s paper and said. “Han Yong, I like your idea. Would you please follow me to the office and talk about it ”
“Er... Yes, madam!” Han Yong was confused because he also focused on the black dot only and paid no attention to the white part of the paper.

Last week, I was creating a picture book for my dad as his birthday gift. It was about our family’s grocery store (杂货店). There were lots of fruits in the store, so my pictures centered on apples, pears, grapes and any other fruit one could think of. I worked forever making each picture as perfect as possible. Every time I messed up, I started all over again, so the floor under the kitchen table was covered with half-finished drawings.
“Dad’s going to love this,” my mom said as she looked over my shoulder, “but it’s housework time now.” I was responsible for folding the clothes, and my little brother Ben, sweeping the floor. “And Amy, please remove the paper from the floor to the recycling bin in the yard when you finish your project,” my mom added.
I finished folding the clothes as fast as possible. Just as I was about to get back to the picture book, my friend Marry showed up.
“Hi, Amy! Want to go and play in the park ” she asked.
“I definitely would, but brrr…It’s freezing cold outside!”
“Exactly!” she said. “It’s the perfect weather for not getting overheated.”
That’s a cool thing about Marry. She has this way of looking on the bright side of pretty much anything.
So, we headed to the park. But as soon as we arrived there, the sky was filled with giant gray clouds and rain started pouring down. We had to go back, dripping wet.
Ben was taking out rubbish to the recycling bin when we stepped into the yard. And that’s when my heart pretty much stopped. Right there in the yard, in front of the recycling bin, was a box full of wet paper. And not just any piece of paper. That was my picture book.

Devi looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with a furious frown on her face. “Mom, they’re all little kids! I’m 15 already! This is ridiculous!”
“I know, Devi,” replied her mother, “but you’re a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!”
Devi had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather’s farm, she hadn’t had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Devi had been to was the alligator pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Devi was older, her mother had found a new jo b in the city, and Devi faced a new challenge—school field trips to the local pool.
The first day that Devi went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming Devi confidently slipped into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Devi let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Devi threw her arm toward the side of the pool and grabbed the ledge (池壁), out of breath. “I really can’t swim! Everyone’s going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself in a panic.
On the next field trip to the pool, Devi sat on the side on a bench, paralyzed with fear. She huddled with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Devi was upset. “Honey, I’ve signed you up for Angela’s swimming lessons at the local pool. Soon you’ll learn how to swim just like everyone else,” she assured Devi, showing photos of Angela with her prize-winning students.

My Gift to Charlie
We moved to a new small town when I was six. Having moved to the United States from the Far East, I was not accepted by children (even children of my own community did not accept me as I had lighter skin than the others). School was spent walking the playground alone or sitting on the grass bank watching other boys play football. On bad days I would hide in the cloakroom (衣帽间) under the coats and remain there the whole day.
It was one day that I by chance met an old man named Charlie, who lived six houses away. I stood on the street side of the fence and watched as he busied himself in the garden. Charlie was a short quiet old man in his 60s He had a bald head with brown hair on the sides and a round rosy face. He always wore gold-colored glasses easily recognized his walk as he’d collect his morning paper and milk.
I did not speak to him for a long time but instead stood at the fence as he did his thing. He did not speak to me, but waited patiently for me to break the silence when ready. This continued for months. After school and at weekends, I just stood and watched him. He would sometimes look up and show me the cause of his joys or pains; it might be a carrot, or a handful of weeds. After several months I found a biscuit placed on the fence post on a small blue plate. Later, weak orange cool drink was added to this when it was hot. Charlie started to speak to me and would share stories from his past as if I was his closest friend I offered very little in return and absorbed all that he said. I was grateful for the time that I spent listening to him.

That night, Nick Bostic could only see a weak orange light as he drove down the streets of Lafayette. It was not until he drove his car further that he finally figured out what he was seeing. Oh my god, he thought, that house was on fire!
It was an ordinary night for Bostic, who was still figuring out how to make his way through a life that hadn’t always been easy.
That night, he was on the road back to his apartment just after midnight when he saw the house on fire. Fires were climbing up, and his phone was dead, with no other vehicles around coming to the rescue (救援). He ran around to the back door, not realizing that it was open. Without pausing to think about the danger, he ran into the burning building.
In the building were the Barrett families, and before the fire broke out, the Barrett couple had left home for a party, leaving their four children at home. Seionna, their 18-year-old daughter, was in charge. She was sleeping when she heard what sounded like an explosion (爆炸), followed by the heat and smell of smoke. Immediately she woke up the other kids, but then a horrible realization hit Seionna. The 6-year-old Kaylani wasn’t there, who would like to sleep in the living room. And the living room was on fire.
At the same time, Bostic peered (盯) into each room of the burning house, searching to see if anyone was home. He had just started climbing the staircase when he looked up and saw three faces from a room at the top of the stairs and peer down at him, their eyes wide.

【答案】One possible version:
“Whoa! Wait! What ” I ran to rescue my birthday book drawings. But it was too late. As I picked up my once-perfect pictures, they were totally wet and became useless paper. I cried in despair, “My drawings are gone forever!” It was just like a thunder from the clear sky. “How did they get out here in the rain ” I shouted. “I saw the cats knock some paper off the table.” said Ben hesitantly. “What did you do then ” “I just tried to recycle the paper on the floor.” Ben answered, embarrassed and nervous.
At that time, Marry came to me and gave me a comforting pat on the shoulder. I sobbed, “I have no birthday gift for Dad now.” Looking at the pictures about the grocery store carefully, Marry said, “Why not turn them into something new ” Hearing her words, an idea came to my mind. I rushed home with the pictures, took out some air-filled balloons and covered them with the wet pictures. To my surprise, the balloons were the perfect shape for big fruits. Soon, there was a big basket of “fruits”. And Dad loved this creative gift!

【答案】Four years later I left the small town, but our last chat at his house and his gift for me always remain in my mind. When I was 11, we left, and the last time we talked, he went into his room, and he came out with an old watch. He gave me the watch as a gift and said he didn’t want me to leave, and we hit it off. I'm his closest friend. I don't want to part with him. It was the old man who gave me encouragement and comfort during my most difficult time and made me go through the most difficult time. He's the person I respect the most in a foreign country. I’ll see him again.
Fortunately, when I was 15, I came across Charlie’s wife, Mary, who told me something about him. I was sad to hear Charlie’s passing. I learnt that he often spoke thankfully of those years when the small Asian boy would just stand and watch. I thought I got everything from that friendship but returned nothing of any value; Mary disagreed. She told me that I gave the greatest thing that I could to Charlie, which was my time, and that was why he gave me his watch.
