A potato farmer, Cliff Young took part in a Sydney to Melbourne ultramarath on (超级马拉松)race in 1983. Coached by his mother who was 81 at the time, Cliff Young started the marathon with work shoes and work clothes.
Competing against world-class marathon runners who were backed up by big sports companies and spent hundreds of hours preparing for the race, Cliff Young’s training method was just running after his sheep. He told the organizers he could run after his sheep for a few days and that he could surely compete with other runners.
The ultramarath on generally took 5 days to compete and this potato farmer’s decision seemed suicidal. In fact, some tried to stop him from running the super-difficult race because they thought Cliff Young could die because of the heat and fatigue(疲劳). After all, he was 61 years old!
To cut the story short, Cliff Young managed to finish the race. While the young racers slept, he continued to race throughout the night. The young athletes left him far behind until the very last night when he finally led the marathon. Not only did Cliff Young, a 61-year-old potato farmer, survive the race, but he even managed to win the marathon and actually broke the race record by 9 hours! He even gave away his prize money to the rest of the runners after him.
After the win, he continued to run in many ultramarath on races and even set standards in the world of endurance racing. His running style, named “The Young Shuffle” is a famous running technique used by many runners in the world today.

Genetic information is important because it stores, processes and transmits biological data from generation to generation. Some scientists even assume that knowing genetic information itself matters.
For example, in quantum mechanics (量子力学), there is a popular theory known as the “observer effect”, which states that the act of observing a phenomenon (usually by making some kind of measurement)necessarily changes that phenomenon. In other words, just by being there and having an interest in the outcome, we affect that outcome.
While the explanations behind the observer’s influence in quantum mechanics come down to the measuring instrument and not the observer’s conscious mind, we also see strong evidence for the “placebo effect” in medicine: a patient’s condition can improve if they just believe they are receiving an effective treatment. And those beneficial effects can happen even if the patient is not actually receiving that treatment or if the treatment doesn’t actually work.
If our minds truly do have power over our surroundings and our bodies, what does having the genetic information do to us Does simply knowing more about our own physiology (生理机能)change it A recent study on exercise and obesity suggests that the answer is yes.
Those who were told they were at low genetic risk for obesity produced 2.5 times more of the fullness hormone and claimed to feel fuller despite eating the same meal as they had one week prior. Those who were told they had lower endurance because of their genes did worse on their physical test than they had before receiving that information: they showed lower lung capacity and quit sooner.
Thus, having information about our genetic risk can lead to improvements in our physiology (as was true for the eaters of the study), but it can also put us at a disadvantage (as with the poor exercise performers). So we certainly need to be cautious of incorrect genetic information. But as the Stanford study shows, even if the genetic information we receive is correct, how we receive it is also important.
28. How does the “placebo effect” in medicine work
A. The patient recovers with the timely treatment.
B. The patient’s condition worsens due to a lack of treatment.
C. The patient’s condition remains unchanged despite their belief.
D. The patient’s condition improves with the belief in the treatment.
29. According to paragraph 5, what happened to those who were told they were at low genetic risk for obesity
A. They showed lower lung capacity.
B. They quit their physical test sooner.
C. They needed more food to satisfy their appetite.
D. They felt fuller with more fullness hormone released.
30. What is the author’s attitude towards having genetic information
A. Positive. B. Objective.
C. Ambiguous. D. Negative.
31. What is the main idea of this article
A. The great power of the observer’s mind.
B. The influence of knowing genetic information.
C. The amazing application of genetic information.
D. The connection between Quantum Mechanics and Medicine.

From the roar of a crowd to the quiet of a library, sound and silence might seem like polar opposites. However, according to a new research, our brains perceive them in the same way. Silence may not be a sound, but scientists say we can truly hear it.
In this new study, researchers examined how people experience silence using well-known auditory illusions(错觉). The illusions are meant to test the perception of noise, but for the study, the team adapted them to measure people’s response to silence, instead.
“If you can get the same illusions with silences as you get with sounds, then that may be obvious that we literally hear silence after all.” Chaz Firestone, a co-author of the study and cognitive scientist at Johns Hopkins University, says in a statement.
In the study, participants were tricked by these “silence illusions” in a similar way to how people are typically fooled by the sound versions of the experiments.
The researchers prepared seven experiments and tested them on 1,000 study participants. In one experiment, researchers played a recording that sounded like background noise in a crowded place. In the first half of the recording, the background noise was interrupted by two separate periods of silence. In the second half, one continuous period of silence was inserted(嵌入). Researchers asked participants which silence felt longer- the combination of the first two periods of silence, or the second uninterrupted one. Most participants thought the continuous silence was longer, but it was actually the same length as the two shorter silences combined.
These results were consistent with previous research that examined auditory illusions, which used two separate sounds and one continuous sound. With that illusion, people also perceived the continuous sound as longer than the two separate ones together.
Similar findings across the seven experiments suggested that humans experience silence and sound in much the same way: They can distort(扭曲)our perception of time.
32. Why did researchers use auditory illusions in the new study
A. To help people perceive sounds.
B. To test people’s adaptability to noise.
C. To measure how people respond to silence.
D. To remind people to be quiet in the library.
33. What can we infer from paragraph 5
A. Illusions of silence fool people’s brains.
B. The three periods of silence are of the same length.
C. Sound is usually difficult for people to perceive.
D. Participants chose a recording and played it.
34. Where is this text most likely from
A. A diary. B. A journal.
C. A novel. D. A guidebook.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. We can truly hear silence like a sound.
B. Sound and silence are actually the same.
C. Auditory illusions affect our perception ability.
D. Our brain has the ability to perceive sound and silence.
第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Is your glass of milk half-full or half-empty This saying is often used to test people’s outlook in a situation; do they focus on the positives (a half-full glass)or the negatives (a half- empty one) 36 —and it’s known to boost your well-being.
Why is thinking positively good for you
Research shows that people who are optimistic and think positively tend to experience less stress and cope well when faced with life’s challenges. People who are more pessimistic may find it hard to believe that these challenges will pass. Scientists have even found that thinking positively can make you live longer. According to Professor Tali Sharot, being optimistic about the future can make you happier and more successful. 37
Worrying is like a fire alarm.
Everybody can worry from time to time. Worrying can help to keep you safe—if you were never worried and were overly positive about how things would turn out, you wouldn’t recognize risks. “ 38 It’s like a fire alarm,” says child psychotherapist Rachel Melville-Thomas. “The trouble is that sometimes it goes off when there isn’t a huge danger to face.” When this happens, you can feel anxious and hopeless about what lies ahead.
39
Optimism is shaped by your genes, which carry characteristics inherited from your parents, and by what happens to you. 40 Research has shown that it can help to draw or write an outcome that’s positive —for example, an image of you playing guitar, having passed your next grade. Imagining this can motivate you to work to achieve it, such as practicing every day after school.
A. Learn to think positively.
B. Sometimes worrying can do harm to our health.
C. The way you think positively or negatively largely depends on your genes.
D. Worrying is our brain warning us that there might be something threatening.
E. However, no matter your starting point, everyone can learn to become more optimistic.
F. Thinking positively, with a belief that most things will turn out well, is called optimism.
G. This’s because you believe your goals are achievable, which encourages you to work towards them.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My knees started shaking, yet my body froze. It felt as though my soul departed my body and I had no control over it. Anxiously, I looked through the roster (名单)posted on the wall of the locker room. My heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends’ names on that list but could not find mine. At that moment, I froze. I just could not accept that all my friends were on the basketball team while I was not.
I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the coach. “Hey, coach, are you sure that the roster you posted is correct ” I asked anxiously, dreading(担心)his answer.
“Yes, the names on the list are finalized. Sorry if you did not make it this year, there is always next year,” the coach replied.
I could feel the hot, bitter tears filling my eyes, and I ran out of the room as fast as I could. Trying to forget about the situation, I headed over to the cafeteria to buy some food. I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered. Walking was such a burden that it felt as if I had a 100-pound weight tied to my backpack. My mind was also blank for the rest of the school day. Everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the other.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw all my friends gathered near the back of the lot, celebrating and joking around. I detoured (绕道)around the side of the school to avoid them, trying not to think about being the only one in our friend group failing to make the team.
I saw my father’s red car pull up near the school lot. I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me, turned on the radio, and started driving home. And soon he noticed my gloomy face, and asked me what was wrong. “Nothing. Well, it’s just that all my friends made the school team. Everyone! Except me…” I stammered(口吃). “Well, what are you going to do about it Are you just going to sit there and wait ” he asked. Surprised, I didn’t know what to say.

An Unforgettable Activity in High School
My high school has witnessed many colorful activities in the past 3 years, among which the coming-of-age ceremony is especially unforgettable.
Present at the ceremony were all we students from Grade 3, along with our parents and teachers. It kicked off with an inspiring speech delivered by our president, which conveyed congratulations and anticipations about our future. Then came a series of activities, ranging from expressing gratitude to our parents and teachers to making a promise of being responsible for the adulthood. The highlight was when we walked through the coming-of-age gate.
The ceremony will be rooted in my mind as a reminder that I should shoulder my responsibility as an adult.
作文2:(25分)
I just shook my head and went into my room. I thought hard and realized that nobody was going to give me a place on that team. I would have to earn it. Having decided to work toward my goal of making the team, I biked to the gym near my school every day after school and trained for two hours. There were moments when I didn’t think I could keep on going, but I powered through it.
After almost a year of practicing and training, I tried out for the team again. “Believe in yourself,” I said to myself. “Hard work pays off.” After the tryout, I felt confident and congratulated myself. Regardless of the outcome, I knew that I had worked hard and learned something about mental toughness. The next day, I found out I made the team. Seeing my name printed in large bold letters, I felt as though all my dreams came true. The greater the effort, the sweeter the reward, and by making the team,I had officially made a turnaround.
