I was in the seventh grade, and we had moved to New Jersey in November. By then, everyone already had had their own friends, and no one wanted to talk to a new girl. To make things worse, they put me in "Section L". I found out later that everyone called Section L "Loserville". It was sort of an open secret that it was the section for troublemakers and not-so-smart kids. When I found out, I wanted to scream. I had always been a good student and had worderful friends, and now everyone thought I was a loser!
I did text my friends in Illinois almost every night, especially my best friend, Ana. At first my friends wanted to hear all about it. But then some stopped texting back once I said something about how miserable (痛苦的) I was. One night when I was texting with Ana,I complained about another friend who had just done that, Ana's texts came really fast for the next few minutes and they surprised me. She said that she was tired of hearing about how bad everything was in New Jersey, too. She said she did not want to hurt my feelings but that I needed to stop feeling so sorry for myself all the time, and I had to try to make things better. The next day, I thought a lot about what Ana had said. She was right!
I wish I could say that everything changed overnight after that, but it didn't. I was still stuck in "Loserville", and some people were still mean to me, even though I tried to just stay out of their way.
But what did change was me-I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and did something about making friends. I signed up for the school play. I met a lot of new people there, and suddenly I had friends to say hi to in the halls!
I still miss Illinois sometimes, but life in New Jersey isn't so hard anymore. Even though I couldn't change my situation. I could change my attitude—and that made all the difference.
4. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Say Goodbye to "Loserville" B. An Incident at School
C. Everlasting Friendship D. Unhappiness about "Loserville"
5. Why did the writer complain all the time in the new environment

C. Ana didn't text back to her. D. She couldn't follow the teachers.
6. Whom is“Section L”probably for
A. Smart students. B. Low achievers. C. Class leaders. D. New comers.
7. What made a difference to the author
A. She managed to go back to Illinois.
B. She ended the friendship with Ana.
C. She fought back with her classmates.
D. She began to make friends with others.

Most parents will remember their little ones grasping their leg or being unwilling to speak to someone new. But when does this stop being a natural part of a child’s growing up and become something to worry about
Here, Heidi Gazelle, a senior lecturer in developmental psychology from the University of Melbourne, explains how shyness is of more concern if it is persistent rather than temporary.
Shyness with other children is of more concern than shyness with adults. It is common for children to be on the alert for adults, particularly men, but less common for children around their own age.
Children who engage in very little social interaction in comparison to children of their age are missing out on these important cumulative learning experiences. As a result, their social cognition, social skills and sense of self may be less mature than those of other children around their age.
Being excluded and bullied is damaging children’s emotional health and sense of self, especially when these conditions persist over time. Children need help from adults to stop exclusion and being bullied by other children. When parents become aware that their child is being excluded or bullied by other children at a childcare center or a school, they should contact the childcare center or school on their child’s behalf.
Shyness is of concern if it interferes with your child’s or family’s routines or activities, or if your child often appears miserable or complains of being lonely. For instance, if shyness prevents your child from attending other children’s birthday parties or school, or prevents your family from visiting friends, then you should consider seeking help from a child psychologist.
If a child is upset about a problem with a friend, parents can encourage the child to try to resolve the problem in a way that preserves the friendship, instead of ending the friendship, as well as encourage the child to develop other friendships.
8. What view does Heidi Gazelle hold with regards to shy children
A. Persistent shyness is more worrying than temporary shyness.
B Children’s shyness basically results from a disharmonious family.
C. They tend to have less shyness when meeting with unknown people.
D. It is more common for them to be alert when being with other children than adults.
9. In which aspects will shy children be less mature than other children of their age
①Social skills. ②Sense of self. ③Overall intelligence. ④Power of observation. ⑤Social cognition.
A. ①③⑤ B. ②④⑤ C. ②③④ D. ①②⑤
10. How should parents respond when their child is excluded or bullied
A. Consider transferring their child to another school or childcare center.
B Get in touch with the childcare center or school.
C. Warn the children who bully their child.
D. Try to find his or her own faults.
11. When do parents need to care about their child’s shyness
A. Their child often complains about being lonely.
B. Their child is always ready to visit their relatives.
C. Their child wants to change the family’s original plan.
D. Their child is willing to attend other children’s birthday parties.
D
A six-year-old girl has become an enthusiastic business helper in a "silent" foot spa where the owner and all of the employees are hearing-impaired (听力受损的), serving as a sign language translator for customers. Hu Yunjia, nicknamed Niu Niu, is the daughter of the foot spa owner Hu Yong. The father Hu, 34, lost his hearing and speech due to a severe fever in his childhood, making it difficult for him to get a permanent job. After finishing training in the foot spa and pedicure (修指甲术) abilities, Hu started the business in Chengdu, the capital city of Southwest China's Sichuan province, in 2019. Peng Feng, the mother, who is also deaf, works together with her husband at the shop. Despite its modest size, the shop attracts a steady stream of customers due to the couple's solid skills.
Evenings witness a peak in business at the foot spa, and this is when Niu Niu finishes school and plays a role as a sign language translator. "Madam, how is your day and what help do you need " "Sir, my dad asked you to take this ointment (药膏) back home and apply it." Niu Niu delivers her father's messages to the customers in her sweet child voice and with rich body language, frequently amusing the guests. Besides translating, she enjoys introducing and promoting services to customers and answering phone calls.
Niu Niu started learning sign language from her parents at the age of two and began assisting at the shop at the age of four after kindergarten hours and on holidays.
"She is always cheerful, positive, enthusiastic and outgoing." said the customers and the school teachers. "Dad taught me to be hard working." Niu Niu explained. In her view, her parents are like superheroes who look after the family and her although they're unable to hear and speak. "Though my dad is different from other people, he is the best for me," she added.
Hu also recruited two hearing impaired persons in the hope of providing opportunities for people with disabilities like him. Niu Niu graduated from kindergarten and began attending a local primary school last summer.“She made me proud, and I am grateful to have such an 'angel' in my life. Now that she is a primary school student, I want her to focus more on her studies and less on my business. No matter what, I will give her my full support.”said the father.
12. What does Niu Niu do in the spa according to the second paragraph
①She washes towels and bed sheets.
②She does some cooking for her family.
③She answers phone calls from customers.
④She passes her father's messages to the customers.

13. How did Niu Niu begin to learn sign language
A. By learning from one of their relatives.

A. She was unfairly treated. B. Her friends hurt her feelings.

As a result their social cognition, social skills and sense of self may be less mature than those of other children around their age.

B. Get in touch with the childcare center or school.
C. Warn the children who bully their child.
D. Try to find his or her own faults.
11. When do parents need to care about their child’s shyness
A. Their child often complains about being lonely.

After finishing training in the foot spa and pedicure (修指甲术) abilities, Hu started the business in Chengdu, the capital city of Southwest China's Sichuan province, in 2019. Yours truly,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear Sir or Madam.
I'm Li Hua from China, studying at a senior high school in England.
Owing to its rich content and colourful pictures, www.coursera.org/ has been one of favorites as a great help to my learning the English language since junior high school. Apart from learning the language, I have acquired a lot about culture, history, lifestyle, and so on from both at home and abroad, which does help broaden my horizons. However, the content about China’s scenic spots is obviously insufficient. After all, China is a great country with a vast territory, an enormous population, a long history and numerous scenic spots worth a visit in particular, the Great Wall, for example. If www.coursera.org/ includes the introduction to China’s tourist attractions, it will be able to attract the attention of more readers globally. I would appreciate it if you would like to consider my proposal thoughtfully.
Looking forward to your reply as soon as possible.

The small boy called Thomas turned his wheelchair to his right and slowly opened the door. As usual, it was his mom. who wanted Thomas to get ready for school. He had to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. But the accident did not take away his trust in life. and he wanted to be a writer. His mother supported his dream. He told George that there would be a story competition the next week. George encouraged him to take part in it, saying. “Trust yourself. You can make it!” They reached the school in thirty minutes. George said goodbye to Thomas and they both went to their classes.
Slowly days passed. and the mid-term exams started. They ended within a week. “Thomas, you have done the best in the exams.” said the class teacher cheerfully. Thomas was very happy because he had scored full marks in all the three subjects. He wheeled his chair and again met George on the way back home. This time both stopped on the side and George said. “Try to participate in the story competition.” “OK. thank you. George,” said Thomas excitedly. George offered him some suggestions and they headed to the local library to refer to some materials so that Thomas could get some inspiration and create a better story. Finally, with their help and his own hard work, he finished his short story. He sent this story to the competition organizer.
After that, Thomas was anxiously waiting for the result of the competition. As all the judges read Thomas’s story, they were amazed by his brilliance (才华). The lines and the plot of the story moved them. All the judges made their best comments on it. Thomas’s story won the first prize, and he became the best writer in the junior section. The moment he got the news, Thomas went back home quickly and told his mother about it. “Congratulations! my dear. You are worthy of the success.” She hugged Thomas tightly in her arms.
