Analysis of teaching material
The topic is about habits for healthy lifestyle. Students are familiar with this topic , so they have something to talk about it. The passage involves proposing the problem, analyzing the problem and solutions to the problem. It is typically an exposition which may be frequently seen in their learning. The passage intends to cultivate students’ awareness of developing good habits by employing the theory of habit circle in their real life, which is of great significance to young teenagers.
Analysis of students
They are familiar with and interested in this topic and are able to say something about this topic; in their previous learning, they know basic reading skills; they are smart and outgoing but lack confidence in speaking English and hard to concentrate in class.
Teaching objectives: Students will be able to
1.know about the problem and solutions of bad habits and learn some logical words about proposing suggestions such as first, aside from, in fact and etc.
2.improve their reading, speaking and thinking abilities
3.raise the awareness to break bad habits and form good habits
Key points: 1.Figure out the structure of the passage.
2.Learn to use the habit circle to break bad habits and form good ones.
Difficult points: 1.Apply what they’ve learned into their daily use.
2.Learn about the usage of some techniques to illustrate a point.
Teaching and learning methods
Teaching methods: task-based teaching method and communicative teaching method
Learning methods: inquiry- based learning method and cooperative learning method
Teaching procedures
Step1 Warm-up (2mins)
T: show two pictures and ask them questions:
1.How do you think the people feel in the photos
2. What is the meaning of healthy lifestyle
Ss: look at the pictures and give their opinions.
Intention: Introduce the topic and get them familiar with the topic.
Step2 Lead-in (4mins)
T: let Ss talk about the questions about habits and then watch a short video and brainstorm more effective ways to break the bad habit.
Ss: talk bout bad habits they know and then watch the video carefully and write the good habits in the video.
Intention: Motivate their learning by asking some simple questions; arouse students’ interest and help them learn about some good habits.
Step3 Pre-reading (3min)
T: ask them to look at the title and key words to predict the main idea, and find out the target readers and genre of this text.
Ss: have a look at the title and the key words of first and the last paragraph.
Intention: Help students find out key words and promote their reading expectation
Step4 Fast reading (5min)
T: ask Ss scan the passage and match the main idea with each paragraph; require them to figure out the framework of an Exposition.
Ss: scan the passage quickly and find out the topic sentence of each paragraph and then outline its basic structure.
Intention:Train students’ scanning and thinking abilities;further their understanding
of this passage.
Step5 Careful reading (15mins)
T: ask students to read each paragraph carefully and complex related tasks.
Para1. find out the reason of changing a bad habit and preventing method.
Para2-3. illustrate the example of the habit circle by filling the blanks.
Para.4-5 find out the solutions of changing bad habits.
Para. 6 explain the meaning of “magic pill” or delete button and figure out its part of speech.
Ss: read the paragraph one by one carefully and finish corresponding tasks designed for each paragraph.
Intention: In this process, several teaching aims could be achieved. Firstly, students can have a deeper understanding of this passage; secondly, they can improve their speaking, skimming and thinking abilities. They can also master some logical words of proposing suggestions. What’s more, they have an insight into bad habits and try to find methods to break them.
Step6 Post-reading (9mins)
Further Thinking (4mins)
T: ask students to think about two questions:
What is the purpose of writing the passage
What techniques are used in the text to illustrate the topic and give evidence.
Ss: think about the question independently and find out the evidence of each technique used in this passage.
Intention: Further stimulate their thinking; they also know some techniques to illustrate a point used in exposition.
Discussion (5mins)
T: ask Ss to think of one bad habit and write down the cue, routine, and reward. Then come up with an idea of how to break the bad habit.
Ss: discuss with their partner about their bad habits in their daily life and think about how to change it.
Intention: Consolidate the knowledge that they have learned.
Summary (2mins) :
Ss: ask students to complete the mind-map, and then learn two proverbs about good habits.
Proverb1: Being healthy and living a healthy lifestyle have always been very important to me. (Stacy Keibler)
Proverb 2:We are what we are repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
Ss: try to draw a mind map first by themselves and then fill in the blanks. Read the proverbs together.
Intention: Ending the class by a proverb can sublimate the theme and further promote their thinking.
Homework
1. Retell the article by using the mind map.
2.Try to use the habit circle in your life to help you break your bad habit.
