教学目标
By the end of this class, students will be able to … 1.catch the main idea and the key information of a talk show. 2.talk about their feelings about the story and share stories of showing or receiving kindness. 3.understand what is “paying it forward” and realize the importance of kindness from the story.
教学内容
教学重点: 1.Guide students to listen to the story with the help of sequencing or linking words to know what happened step by step. 2.Inspire students to further think about the significance of kindness based on the story of the chain of love and share their own opinions and similar stories. 教学难点: 1.Encourage students to share the most impressive parts of the story. 2.Inspire students to be aware of being kind and spreading kindness.

Lead-in
Activity 1 greeting & guest introduction 1.The teacher will act as the hostess of a talk show, Rush Hour Show. 2.The guest Kevin Miller, a member of paying it forward foundation, will introduce himself briefly. To create a situation of a talk show and arouse students’ interest.
Pre-listening
Activity 2 listen to the meaning of paying it forward 1.The teacher will welcome the guest, Kevin Miller, and ask the question, “what is paying it forward ” 2.The guest will explain the meaning of the key term “paying it forward”. 3.Students will listen and get the meaning. (Paying it forward means when you receive kindness from someone, you go out and show kindness to another person.) 1.To guide students to listen for the key information, focusing on the meaning of paying it forward. 2.To remove listening barriers.
Activity 3 listen to a song & share feelings 1.The guest will recommend a song named The Chain of Love (Clay Walker) and ask students to share their feelings about this song after listening to it. 2.Students will listen to this song and share their feelings. . (It is about a touching story. Joe impresses me most, because it is so kind of him to help the lady.) 1.To pave the way for listening comprehension by listening to a song, which is closely related with the story in the next step. 2.To stimulate students to share their impression on the song.
Activity 4 Listen to a story 1.The song, the chain of love, is adapted from a real story. The guest will introduce the inspiration and tell the story. 2.Students will listen to the whole story and try to get the key information for the first time. 3.Students will listen for the second time to understand the story step by step and retell the story based on finishing the mind map. The teacher will guide students to finish the mind map by giving detailed questions. Part 1: The song starts with … … but … instead … Part 2: Later, when … When … Then … Part 3: The song has a ending. The waitress … Then … To improve students’ abilities of listening to the story with the help of sequencing or linking words to know what happened.
Activity 5 Retell the story & finish mind maps Students will try to understand and retell the story based on the mind maps. To improve students’ abilities of listening to the story and retelling the story with the help of mind maps to know what happened step by step.
Activity 6 Discuss and predict the story The teacher will guide students to discuss and predict the continuation of the story by the following question. *How would the waitress continue the chain of love (She may educate her kid to be kind and help others. Then her kid would spread kindness in the school.) To talk about the continuation of the story based on the understanding of the story, the chain of love.
Activity 7 Listen to a story in the real life Students will listen to the guest to share an example of spreading kindness in real life. *What other example does Kevin give of paying it forward (Many people paid for the coffee of the people behind them.) *How many of them (Nearly 400 people!) 1.To focus on the example of spreading kindness in real life. 2.To get the detailed information from listening.
Post-listening
Activity 8 Share a story Students are expected to talk about their similar experience. Share their story about showing or receiving kindness. To inspire students to further think about the significance of kindness based on the story of the chain of love and share their own opinions and similar stories.
Activity 9 Share good deeds 1.Students will talk about what we can do in our daily life to spread kindness. (We can ①share our food with someone, ②give our seats to someone in need, ③clean up the public area, ④encourage someone who needs it with a few words. ) 2. Students will listen to the guest’s idea to call on people to join the chain of kindness. To guide students to be aware of being kind and spreading kindness in their daily life.
Assignment
Share your story and impression 1.Write down what impressed you most about the show. 2.Share a story of showing or receiving kindness, either your own story or one that you have heard of. 3.Share it on your social media.
