I told Anna about it, but she said she preferred French or Japanese food. So we chose to have French food. We hadn’t been there before, so we knew nothing about it. But when we got there, we found the restaurant was well worth visiting. The hall was filled with light music, which provided a relaxing environment for us. The waiters were extremely friendly and the service was really good. Our fish was absolutely delicious and the salad was very fresh and tasty. Four years ago, life rewarded me for all the challenges I embraced in search of self-improvement. My spirits rose when I was selected to be in the Youth Exchange and Study (YES) programme and I realized that I was going to spend a full year in the United States. Before that moment, living on the other side of the Atlantic had always equated—for a young Moroccan woman who had never set foot abroad—to an anxiety-free atmosphere, welcoming neighbors, and countless opportunities. Fortunately, my host community checked all these boxes.
My host mother went above and beyond to take care of my needs, my teachers were very accommodating with regards to my schoolwork, and I could use my status as an exchange student as an excuse when I needed a favor or an exception. As a YES student, peers from so many diverse backgrounds at school were interested in getting to know me better. With all this unique treatment, I thought to myself, “Hold on a second! Is this what you came for ” Even though my host community was so helpful and welcoming, I realized that I was growing too content with my life. I remembered that I came to the United States for a challenge and that I was determined to strengthen my capacities.
To develop greater perseverance, I joined my host school’s swim team, even though I had no prior experience in this sport. For over five months, I walked myself—sometimes reluctantly—to swim practices. During those practices, I did the best I could for three hours each day.
One of my best achievements that year was competing in one of the biggest swim meets of the year. From an outsider’s perspective, it might not seem like much, especially since I didn’t even win. However, I was never the athletic type, nor have I ever been particularly outstanding in terms of discipline and commitment. Yet that was exactly what I achieved. I gained discipline and I came to the realization that I do not need to be perfect at everything that I try for the first time.
Growth can take many forms. In my case, it took the form of a humid ceiling and an overly tight polyester cap. Growth can only be achieved by defying personal limits and breaking free from comfort zones. This is not always a glamorous process, but it always brings you closer to a new and improved version of yourself!
24. How did the author feel about her life in her host family
A. She felt somehow uneasy to be taken good care of.
B. She felt free and could do whatever she liked.
C. She felt good about her high family status.
D. She felt stressed like living in a box.
25. What made the author join the school’s swim team
A. Her experience in swimming. B. Her desire to challenge herself.
C. Her spirit of perseverance. D. Her interest in water sports.
26. The author thought that her achievement in swimming ________.
A. made her outstanding B. made her see her limits
C. was not a big deal D. was her courage to compete
27. What can we conclude from this passage
A. Change is a brilliant opportunity to grow. B. Self-assurance is two-thirds of success.
C. From failure to success is a long road. D. We learn things by doing them.
C
A new study says that no matter how much the world cuts back on greenhouse gases, a large and important part of ice of Antarctica (南极洲) is expected to disappear.
Researchers used computer models to expect the future melting (融化) of protective ice around Antarctica’s Amundsen Sea in western Antarctica. They said the melting will take hundreds of years. It will slowly add nearly 1.8 meters to sea levels. And it will be enough to change where and how people live in the future.
The study found that even if future warming was limited to just a few tenths of a degree more, it would have limited power to prevent ocean warming that could lead to the breakdown of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.
Study lead writer Kaitlin Naughten is an expert on oceans at the British Antarctic Survey. She said their research suggests that Earth is set on the path to a quickly increasing speed of ocean warming and ice shelf melting over the rest of the century.
While past studies have talked about how serious the situation is, Naughten was the first to use computer modeling to study how warm water from below will melt the ice. The study looked at four different cases in how much greenhouse gases the world produces. In each case, ocean warming was just too much for this area of the ice to survive.
Naughten looked at floating areas of ice that hold back glaciers (冰川). Once these areas of ice melt, there is nothing to stop the glaciers behind them from flowing (流) into the sea.
The study also looked at what would happen if future warming was limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius over mid-19th century levels: the international goal. They found the rapid melting process in this case as well.
The world has already warmed about 1.2 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times and much of this summer went past the 1.5 degrees mark.
28. Which can best describe the findings of the study
A. Cheerful. B. Encouraging. C. Misleading. D. Disappointing.
29. What makes Naughten’s work on Antarctic ice special
A. Her research area. B. Her research time.
C. Her research method. D. Her research purpose.
30. What do we know about floating areas of ice
A. They will flow into the sea. B. They protect the Antarctic ice.
C. They have warmed about 1.2℃. D. They disappear faster than other ice.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Ice in Parts of Antaretica Will Disappear B. Climate Change Will Harm Humans
C. Sea Level Will Rise Suddenly in the Future D. Limiting Greenhouse Gases Makes No Sense
D
Animals can adapt quickly to survive unfavorable environmental conditions. Evidence is mounting to show that plants can, too. A paper published in the journal Trends in Plant Science details how plants are rapidly adapting to the effects of climate change, and how they are passing down these adaptations to their offspring(后代).
Plants are facing more environmental stresses than ever. For example, climate change is making winters shorter in many locations, and plants are responding. “Many plants require a minimum period of cold in order to set up their environmental clock to define their flowering time,” says Martinelli, a plant geneticist at the University of Florence. “As cold seasons shorten, plants have adapted to require shorter periods of cold to delay flowering. These mechanisms allow plants to avoid flowering in periods when they have fewer opportunities to reproduce.”
Because plants don’t have neural(神经的) networks, their memory is based entirely on cellular(细胞的),molecular(分子的),and biochemical networks. These networks make up what the researchers call somatic memory(体细胞记忆). “It allows plants to recognize the occurrence of a previous environmental condition and to react accordingly,” says Martinelli.
These somatic memories can then be passed to the plants’ offspring via epigenetics(表现遗传). “Several examples demonstrate the existence of molecular mechanisms modulating plant memory to environmental stresses and affecting the adaptation of offspring to these stresses,” says Martinelli.
Going forward, Martinelli hopes to understand even more about the genes that are being passed down. “We are particularly interested in decoding the epigenetic alphabet without changes in DNA sequence(序列),”he says. “This is especially important when we consider the rapid climate change, we observe today that every living organism, including plants, needs to quickly adapt to survive.”
32. What adaptations have plants made to shortened cold seasons
A. They have shortened their flowering time.
B. They have got more chances to reproduce.
C. They have avoided flowering in cold seasons.
D. They have adjusted their environmental clock.
33. What can we learn about somatic memory
A. It is entirely based on neural networks.
B. It can help the plants’ offspring to survive.
C. It can help relieve environmental stresses.
D. It disturbs the plants’ biochemical networks.
34. What does the underlined word “modulating” mean in paragraph 4
A. Adjusting. B. Treasuring.
C. Recording. D. Sharing.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Plants are smart about flowering time
B. Plants can also adapt to climate change
C. Environmental stresses challenge plants
D. Mysteries of plant genes are to be unfolded
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的A-G选项中选出能补全短文的最佳选项。其中两项为多余选项
“If you buy things you do not need, soon you will have to sell things you need.” This is a piece of wise advice from Warren Buffet, arguably one of the greatest financial minds of the 21th century. ____36____ This is true especially in the present economic climate.
While the idea of being frugal(节俭的) has long been a part of Eastern culture, the relatively recent growth of wealth in China as well as the ease of purchasing has led to increased consumerism for many across the country. Yet this increased consumption of goods has been pushing up the prices of certain bare essentials such as housing, transportation and food, which is forcing people to reevaluate their priorities while spending money. ____37____
The internet is flooded with advice on where one can save money as well as good opinions about how they should spend their money. For example, clothes can be bought second-hand, but you should never skip a visit to the dentist. ____38____ In the meanwhile, you should limit those that are fancy but not entirely necessary. Of course, it is still fine to occasionally spend money on a nice vacation, but buying thirty pairs of shoes you will only wear a few times is neither responsible nor sustainable.
Hopefully, we all fully understand at this point that the resources on the earth are indeed limited. ____39____ As a result, the choice (forced or not) to be frugal is not only good for one’s wallet, but also beneficial to the planet in the long run. Have you ever chosen to starve yourself to get a pair of limited-edition sneakers ____40____
A. A continuous growth model on this planet is by no means sustainable.
B. These words have always not been taken seriously by young people.
C. They are meant to encourage people to buy more stuff than they need.
D. It makes sense to prioritize goods and services that directly affect your health.
E. It is no wonder then that being frugal is once again becoming a dominant trend.
F Many young people today appear to be taking these words very much to heart.
G. If so, it is high time you started making changes for yourself and for all humanity.
