定语从句（Ⅲ）
1.关系副词的用法
(1)定语从句中的关系副词有三个：when, where和why，它们在定语从句中分别作时间、地点和原因状语。 when 通常放在 time, day, season等时间的名词后；where 通常放在 place, city, town, village, house等地点名词后；why 通常只放在 reason 后。
(2)定语从句的关系词的选用取决于关系词在定语从句中所作的成分。若关系词在从句中作主语、宾语、定语，用关系代词；若关系词在从句中作状语，用关系副词。
eg. I will never forget the day when I first met Susan in the park. (作时间状语)
I will never forget the day which / that we spent together.
(作宾语)
This is the school where my sister works.
(作地点状语)
This is the school which / that the foreigners visited yesterday. (作宾语)
The reason why he did not go to school is that he was ill.
(作原因状语)
This is the reason which / that he explained to me just now.
(作宾语)
(3) when、where和why可以替换成“介词 + which” 结构。
eg. 1.The birthday is the day on which a person was born. (on which=when)
2.This is the room in which we lived last year.(in which=where)
3.Do you know the reason for which he was late (for which=why)
2.限制性定语从句与非限制性定语从句
(1) 定语从句有限制性和非限制性两种。
限制性定语从句是先行词不可缺少的部分，去掉它主句意思往往不明确，与先行词之间不能用逗号分开；非限制性定语从句是先行词的附加说明，去掉了也不会影响主句的意思，它与主句之间通常用逗号分开。
eg.This is the house which/that we bought last month.
（限制性）
The house, which we bought last month, is very nice.
（非限制性）
(2) 当先行词是专有名词或物主代词和指示代词所修饰时，其后的定语从句通常是非限制性的。
eg.This novel, which I have read three times, is very interesting.
(3) 非限制性定语从句还能将整个主句作为先行词, 对其进行修饰, 这时关系代词只能用which，从句谓语动词要用第三人称单数。
eg.Liquid water changes to vapor, which is called evaporation.
注意：关系代词that和关系副词why不能引导非限制性定语从句。
