A boy walked in with his eyes fixed on the floor and took his seat without speaking a word or looking up at the teacher. “Good morning, young man,” said Mr. Morgan, his voice was strict. “It’s 9:15, and you’re 20 minutes late for class. Do you have a good reason ” But the boy just sat without responding. “Could you please stand up and introduce yourself ” Mr. Morgan added. “I’m Archie,” replied the boy as he rose and looked up, rubbing his tired eyes. Archie looked very untidy and dizzy(头晕目眩的), as though he hadn’t slept at all the previous nights. “Nice to meet you, Archie. I’m your new history teacher. You’re late for class. Do you mind telling me why You just walked in without excusing yourself, and I won’t entertain such behavior.” Archie hesitated for a while. “I’m sorry, sir. I overslept. I didn’t mean to come in late. I was just tired, sir,” he finished, unable to control his yawn, and the whole class laughed. “Silence!” Mr. Morgan demanded. “Archie, you cannot be late for class like this. Can I see your homework I heard your previous history teacher gave you assignments every weekend. Show it to me, will you ” Archie handed over his notebook, and Mr. Morgan’s expression turned uneasy. “Umm, looks like you didn’t do your homework at all.” “I didn’t do it, sir,” the boy said sheepishly as the teacher looked through the rest of the pages. “Archie, what is this You haven’t done any of your homework this whole term,” Mr. Morgan scolded. “I want to meet your parents tomorrow, alright Or I’m taking you straightto the principal’s office. Is that clear ” “Yes, sir,” Archie murmured and sat on his seat.
But the boy didn’t show up the following day. The principal told him, “We’ve given Archie chances, but there’s no improvement. His presence is affecting our academic statistics.” Mr. Morgan started to worry.

(2024届河南省新高考联盟高三下学期模拟预测)Police chief Matthew Bruce’s son, Adam, came late into his lives, so he always spoiled him and never said no to him for anything. As Adam grew older, he began to take his parents’ love and concern for granted, as if it were permission for him to do whatever he pleased. There were certainly times when he was criticized for bad grades or sneaking out of the house, but that was limited to only minor blame. Adam thought that if he pretended to be an “ideal” son, he would have to face absolutely no blame from his parents. So he began to act like a good son in front of them while engaging in all sorts of wrongdoing behind their backs, such as breaking the law. However, Adam always got away with it.
One day, Adam was driving back from a party with his friend Freddie when he began over-speeding. Freddie warned him to slow down, but Adam didn’t listen. Adam’s driving worried Freddie. He asked Adam to slow down again, and when Adam didn’t, he grabbed the steering wheel himself, causing the car to slide off the road and ran into a tree on the side. Then they heard the alarm of a police car behind them. The car came to a stop in front of them, and a police officer approached them.
“I’ve been following your car for a while now, and I’m afraid I’ll have to take you to the station for speeding. May I have your driver’s license first ” the police officer said.
Freddie was scared. “Here’s my driver’s license, sir,” he said, offering it to the officer. Adam tried to explain that he was the police chief’s son, but the police officer turned a deaf ear to him. They drove him to the station, and when Adam stepped inside, he was surprised to see his father there. He had been called to the station for an urgent case.

Adam felt no worries and thought he was out of trouble. He began begging his father to let him go and promised not to repeat the same mistake. At this point, Adam thought his father would talk about his case privately to him, and he’d get away with it as he always did, but his father wouldn’t let him off the hook this time. Bruce decided to teach him a lesson. He wanted his son to go to trial and be issued a fine.
He told Adam he would need to earn money himself to pay for the fine. In the end, Adam had to work a part-time job to pay off the fine. When Adam was finally freed from the fine, he didn’t stop working. After working hard for the money, he realized how hard it was to earn money and do something independently. He promised his parents that he would always obey them. Sometimes you need to be strict with your children to teach them a lesson. Bruce didn’t let Adam off the hook when he went against the traffic law. That experience changed Adam for the better. Adam had to pay for his mistakes, no matter how hard he tried to avoid it.

(2024届吉林省长春市高三下学期质量监测三)Michael saw the trouble coming. There standing in the hallway was Frank, the boy who enjoyed making fun of anyone at any given moment. Frank was tall and strong, so few of his victims stood up to him. Michael hated the idea that Frank always got away with his wrongdoing. Yet like most kids who were picked on, he just took it quietly and waited for the unpleasant to pass.
Frank walked up, his eyes locked on the books in Michael’s arms. When they met, Frank stopped unexpectedly, “Hey, let me see those books!” Some students watched as Michael held out the books he was carrying, trying not to give away his nervousness.
Frank took a book, looked inside for a second, and then threw the book at Michael, who dropped all the other books. “Hey, those are school property,” Frank barked, “Be careful!” Then he walked away, laughing loudly.
Michael, his cheeks turning red, half kicked the fallen books. Suddenly a hand picked up one book. “You look like you could use a p ally(盟友),” a friendly voice said. It was Ramon, the most athletic boy in the high school. Michael couldn’t believe Ramon was stopping to help him as they barely spoke.
“Thanks,” Michael sighed with relief. “It’s confusing. I don’t know what his problems is.”
“Well, as I see it,” Ramon said, “you need to find a way to end this.” Michael nodded, stuck for what to say. Ramon continued, “You know my grandmother used to tell me whenever I had a problem with someone. She’d say, ‘You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar(醋).’”
Looking puzzled, Michael asked, “What does that mean ”
“It means kindness may be more effective than anger,” Ramon explained.
“Can you just tell Frank to stop picking on me ” Michael suggested.
“That’s vinegar,” Ramon laughed as he walked away. “Try honey instead.”
Ramon’s words left Michael thinking.
The next school day brought Michael’s usual pain. There stood Frank, and Michael knew it would be just seconds before he had to face him in the middle of the hall. Frank came nearer.

Then, suddenly, the unexpected happened. Just as Michael looked nervously, Frank somehow tripped over something. Down he fell onto the ground, sending all his books flying and spreading out on the floor. Although Michael was just as shocked, his mind was racing. Then Ramon's Grandma's words popped into his mind, “You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” He knew what to do. Barely had Frank gotten up with loads of embarrassment when Michael went up.
Michael bent down and quickly picked up Frank's books on the floor. Offering them to him, Michael said with a smile, “You look like you could use an ally.” Now, it was Frank's turn to be numbed there with burning cheeks. He quickly took his books, muttered in a low voice, “Uh, thanks” and fled the scene. Out of the corner of his eye, Michael caught Ramon approaching with a knowing smile and a thumbs-up. “My grandma would be proud of you,” Ramon remarked. “Well, I guess that's just honey,” Michael grinned. “And I hope it sticks.”

(2024届辽宁省辽阳市高三下学期二模)Cedar Point was an amusement park in Ohio I had been expecting to visit as a child. We lived close to the park, so I often heard the screams of people on the roller coaster, saw the tired kids with their parents when they left. Sometimes, I looked wistfully at the lights through my window at night.
When I was nine, my grandmother managed to save a little bit of money here and there and took me there one day that summer. I yelled, excitement bubbling inside me. As we arrived at the park for the first time, kids were everywhere, eating popcorn(爆米花)and blowing bubbles. My eyes widened in delight at the scene. I wanted to do all those things, but deep down, I knew we didn’t have enough money. We could only afford to buy a ticket only for one ride for fifteen minutes. I pulled my grandmother toward the ticket window to buy a ticket for the carousel(旋转木马).
It was exactly as I had imagined, straight out of a movie. My grandmother smiled fondly and leaned down, giving the ticket to the ride operator, Mr Salas. Letting go, I rushed to the ride, stopping only to pick which horse to sit on. They were all so beautiful, coming in different colors with’ different expressions ‘on their plastic faces. To me, it felt like the decision of a lifetime.
“Come on, sweetie! The ride is going to start!” my grandmother called out, laughing at my indecision. Seeing that, Mr Salas also smiled warmly. Finally, I picked the horse with the pink hair and blue saddle. In the following minutes, I was absorbed in enjoying the ride, forgetting my family was struggling. My grandmother waved each time the ride passed her by. Mr Salas watched me from a distance.
Sadly, the carousel ride ended much too quickly. My grandmother was waiting and took my hand. I got down from the horse unwillingly, feeling bittersweet.

At that moment, Mr Salas approached us with a warm smile on his face. He asked why we didn’t continue to ride the carousel. My grandmother explained to him that we only had enough money for one ride. He nodded in understanding. But then, his eyes held a glimmer of kindness and understanding as he looked at me and my grandmother. He said gently, “Excuse me, ma’am. I couldn’t help but notice the joy on your granddaughter’s face as she rode the carousel. It’s moments like these that make this job worthwhile.” Having said that, he went to the ticket window.
After a while, Mr Salas returned, with an all-inclusive ticket for Cedar Point for the entire day. He gave it to us and explained that with the ticket, I would have unlimited access to all the rides and attractions in Cedar Point for the entire day. When my grandmother took the ticket from Mr Salas, tears of gratitude filled her eyes. “Thank you,” my grandmother whispered, her voice choked with emotion of gratitude. I was more than delighted that I was able to ride the carousel as much as I wished that day. Moreover, Mr Salas even offered to buy me popcorn and blowing bubbles. By the time this day ended, we expressed our gratitude to Mr Salas again for his kindness. It was the sweetest memory I had in my childhood.

(2024届贵州省高三下学期第二次适应性考试)The smell of defeat filled the air on a warm October evening. In the school parking lot stood Coach McDonald and me, a loser in the 160-pound weight class.
Coach McDonald’s hands firmly grasped my shoulders, his eyes looking through my uncertainty. “Billy,” his voice cut through the uneasy quiet. “The potential for you to become an excellent wrestler exists. It takes time,” he argued.
“Don’t you see I lost... again. Ten matches. Never won.” Frustration struck me as I stepped away from Coach McDonald. Pulling my cell phone from my equipment bag, I said definitively, “I need to call my mom. She’ll pick me up.” I just wanted to get away as soon as possible and flung myself into Mom’s arms. She had always been my best friend and supporter.
While waiting for her to answer my call, the thought of quitting the sport rumbled in my mind. I was so frustrated at that time that I ignored the joy and satisfaction wrestling had brought to me.
Coach McDonald closed in. “Billy, look at me,” he said. “Pound for pound, you’re the strongest and most flexible(灵活的)kid on the team. That’s a winning combination. Master the techniques in practice, and victory will be yours, I promise.”
I coughed and pulled my sweaty shirt off my chest. “When, Coach ”
With a knowing look, Coach said, “Do you know how long it took me to win my first match ” He stood up straight, squinting(斜视)like he was recalling a tough time. “During my first year, I lost every match. I ended the season 0-11. I didn’t lose at all in the following two years, including two state championships. Billy, that can be you someday. But it’ll never happen if you quit.”
In that silent moment, I felt a slight pain within me, but it was weak, not strong enough to change my mind. Coach cleared his throat, glancing at his watch. “Well, I’m hungry.”
“And my mom’s here,” I said. Then I jumped into her car.

In the car, I told her I lost again and I was hesitating about quitting the team. Mom remained silent for a full minute, her grip on the steering wheel tightening. Finally, she spoke with a measured tone that broke the silence. “Billy, quitting is not a sign of weakness. Winning or losing doesn’t define you. What matters is whether you’re pursuing something that brings you joy.” Her words cleared up the self-doubt that had clouded my decision and reignited a spark of courage within me. I recalled why I had learned to wrestle in the first place. “Thanks, Mom. I know what I should do.”
The next day, I walked into the training field again. Coach McDonald was already there, setting up training for the team. He smiled when he saw me with a knowing look in his eyes. “Back for more, Billy ” he said, clapping me on the back. I nodded, making up my mind to give it another shot. As I tied my shoes and prepared for practice, I felt a surge of determination washing over me. Maybe Coach was right. Maybe I do have what it takes to be a champion. And if not, at least I am pursuing something that brings me joy and a sense of purpose.

Her friends had been baking cupcakes for a year. Yet, it seemed her parents had little faith in her.

At her words, a flash of uncertainty crossed her parents’ faces. Would they agree Holding her breath, she had waited for what seemed like ages. Surprisingly, Mom nodded, saying, “Okay, but please be careful, and remember to take a look at the cookbook first.”
Fueled by determination, Anna raced to the kitchen. With each step, there was a sense of purpose and confidence growing within her. She had already done it with Mom a million times before. Putting the cookbook aside, she got down to baking cookies from memory, breaking eggs, dropping a cold stick of butter, adding salt and then…um…yes, mixing it well! Using a mixer was easy. She turned on the mixer at the medium speed—and whoa. Whoa. Whoa! Butter splattered(飞溅)everywhere, making the kitchen in a mess. Collecting herself, she turned back to the mixing bowl and started again. This time with softer butter.
Anna placed rounded spoonfuls of mixture onto the cookie pan and put it into the oven(烤炉). Within a few minutes, a fantastic smell filled the kitchen- the smell of cookie success! I thought of what had happened. I was climbing down the mountain as I was admiring the beautiful scenery. Accidentally. I stepped on a loose rock. Then I slipped, fell with the rock and got stuck somewhere below the top. It was getting dark in the pit. Only my mother knew where I’d gone. I promised to have lunch with her. Thinking of this. I took my phone out and dialed her number with shaking fingers. No service. The silence, which earlier I’d valued, was now horrible.
With a sharp pain in my head, I was terrified. I knew I’d fallen far, but I wasn’t sure where I was. I called 911 because I knew by the pain that my back was severely injured, if not broken. My ear was torn badly. There was still no service. I dug through my bag to assess my supplies and found a whistle and some wipes.
I put the whistle around my neck and blew, though I knew no one would hear me. It was 1:15 pm and I was miles from the town where I lived. I used the wipes to clean off as much blood as I could. I rested. Then I screamed, blew my whistle, and let myself think the unthinkable. What if they can’t find me What if this is it
I decided to get moving. I climbed through a small opening, but when I peered over the next edge, my heart sank: there was a 30-foot drop. There was no way down. I was trapped.
I knew with that extreme Arizona heat in the day and bitter desert cold at night, I wouldn’t last long. But I thought my mother was sure to call the police for help if she couldn’t get in touch with me. With a little hope, I prayed the police would send a helicopter(直升机)to my resecu.

【答案】
Around five hours later, a growing buzz(嗡嗡声)in the air broke the silence. Rescue was coming. I couldn’t look too far up because moving my back was impossible, so I got on my knees and whistled. The helicopter flew close to me, and the motor drowned out my calls for help. They flew over me once, twice, four times and they still could not see me, although I was waving my arms wildly. At that momet, I felt so disappointed. Then, just as it was starting to get dark, the helicopter passed and I locked eyes with one of the men inside. He pointed right at me.
Though the pilot saw me, it was difficult for the team to get to me. They tried different rescue techniques. Eventually, one crewmember came down and tied a rope around my waist and I was finally dragged into the helicopter. I was saved. The rescuers told me how my mother had contacted the police and how community members joined the search. Three hours from the start of the search, everyone was celebrating my return. But from then on, my mother never let me act alone.

(2024届辽宁省锦州市高三下学期质量检测一模)In a summer holiday, some of my friends planned to take a hike in a jungle, including Jake and Liam. They asked me if I would like to go with them. I loved outdoor activities, so I immediately said yes.
It was sunny the following morning. I was in a very good mood. I was so excited about hiking since it was the first time that I had hiked with them. I ate a light breakfast. After that, I hurriedly ran out of my house to meet them. At that time, I didn’t expect there was a horrible experience ahead.
The jungle where we were going was far from our area. Its name is Salymbia Jungle. It took about three hours to get there by bus, but it wasn’t a boring journey as we were all eager to hike. After we got off the bus, we found a local guide to ensure our safety. The guide, whose name is Thomas, said that he had hiked in the Salymbia Jungle lots of times and that he was familiar with the route. When we arrived, Thomas told us never to leave the group. He warned us that we would easily get lost in the jungle if we walked alone. Then we began to hike.
There were a wide variety of plants which we had never seen before. All of us were amazed at the beauty of the scenery and the sounds of the creatures. After a while, we were walking and then I looked at my wrist to check the time, but then I realized that my watch fell off. Then I walked back without informing anyone. I did not worry about getting lost since there were other people behind and I thought I would have been able to keep up with the crowd. I went back to search through the pathway so attentively that I lost track of the time and sight of my friends. I immediately realized that I was alone.

The sky started to become darker and I was very terrified. I didn’t know what to do. I called out to my friends, but there was no reply. I tried to look for a way but none of the scenes seemed familiar. I walked for a few more minutes and I got tired and hungry. I was horrified and longed for this nightmare to finish. Finally, I gave up and leaned on a tree to rest. I fell asleep quickly and suddenly I heard a human voice. I doubted my ears but then I was convinced. I screamed, “Help!”
Actually, they were rescuers searching for me. My friends Jake and Liam told Thomas that they found I was lost, and some rescuers were called to help at once. They led me back to the bus. Seeing me, my friends told me they were really worried. I apologized to them for leaving the group without telling them. Instead of scolding me, they comforted me and helped me calm down. And I truly learned a good lesson from it—safety comes first.

(2024届浙江省宁波市高三下学期第二次模拟)Whenever I spread marmalade(橘子酱), I am reminded of my mother, a five-foot-tall angel who even befriended a skunk(臭鼬).
One day, while she was busy picking beans in the backyard, she came across a skunk no more than a meter away. The skunk’s embarrassment was evident as he had undoubtedly been rummaging(乱翻)through the garbage. He still had a marmalade jar stuck on his nose. Mom took pity on him. Instead of worrying the creature would spray something smelly all over her and the beans, she smiled compassionately at the little thing and extended a helping hand. Kneeling on the ground, she inched across the grass, reached out, and twisted the jar—very carefully.
The jar slipped off. The skunk nodded a thank-you before slipping away into the woods at the back of the garden. Obviously, there was no spraying incident, thanks to my remarkable mother. She repeated this tale numerous times, always calling the skunk Marmalade. However, that was not the end of the story. Three summers later, when I was about twelve, another encounter occurred.
It was a rainy morning, and both my mother and father had gone to work. My friend Rob came over to play, and we decided to run the electric train in my room. Suddenly, a scratching sound emerged from the attic(阁楼). Rob assumed that it might be some kind of animal. Curiosity got the better of us, and we ventured towards the source of the sound.
I cautiously opened the attic door in the hall. The noise ceased abruptly. I climbed up the stairs, Rob following my lead. There behind the toy box near the chimney stood the animal—black with a distinct white stripe down his back. Was he scared and trembling I believe so, at least that’s what I remember. Instinctively, I retreated, fearing the potential spray or bites from the creature. “Hey, Rob,” I whispered urgently, “It’s a skunk. Let’s go to the kitchen and figure out a way to get him out of here.”

【答案】
In the cupboard, several paper cups and a jar of marmalade caught our sight. I reached for the jar, remembering my mother’s encounter with the skunk years ago. Could it be that this was indeed Marmalade, returning to our home in search of a familiar treat Hurriedly, I dumped a teaspoon of marmalade into each paper cup, hoping to lure the skunk out of the attic. Hearts pounding in anticipation, we set one cup on the back porch, one just inside the back door, and one every few feet all the way up to the attic. The skunk seemed intrigued, slowly creeping towards the first cup. His nose twitched, and then he began to lick the sweet treat.
Rob and I followed the skunk as he ate his way down the stairs. He seemed to have grown accustomed to our presence, no longer trembling, and even appeared to enjoy the treat. As he finished gobbling the last bit of the marmalade, he turned and looked at us, those big brown eyes seemingly showing his gratitude. Without another scratch or sign of aggression, he turned and gracefully made his way out of the house, disappearing into the rainy morning. We stood there, amazed and in complete awe of the remarkable encounter. Later, when I shared the story with my mother, she smiled and nodded, saying, “Yes, that’s Marmalade. He always knows where to find a warm heart and a jar of marmalade.”

(2024届广东省广州市天河区高三下学期综合测试二)Born into a medical family, Amar, a 15-year-old boy, was expected to be a doctor, but deep down in his heart, he was eager to take up writing as his future career. He was in a great dilemma whether to pursue his dream or live up to his parents’ expectation. until one day when his father gifted him a parrot.
The parrot had two hazy lines in her neck: black and red. Amar knew the hazy lines mark the stage of learning. “When there is a good teacher, how can his student be stupid” ,he used to believe. It was absolutely true.
Metto’s cage was yellow with a big door and a shiny silver rod(杆)running through the centre. Metto’s world was fantastic, surrounded by eight-foot white walls with some plum trees. And a lawn, with a palm tree in the middle, was dotted with multiple-color roses.
Back home from school every afternoon, Amar always slid the door of the cage up for Metto to set her free nearby the palm tree. Metto could set herself free because she learned how to slide up the door but she had never tried to do so. It was either love with Amar or, might be, she had never tasted the taste of a bigger world.
Amar always talked with Metto in Pashto(普什图语). Whenever Amar fished out peanuts from his pocket, Metto talked frequently “Toti choori khore” —parrot! Wanna eat choori. She had learned one more sentence after meeting with a friend belonging to jungle outside the white walls. She always said that at the end of meal “Da wakht bam teer she”—this shall to be passed, which Amar had never taught her.
Amar saw her friend coming daily and sitting in the plum tree nearby Metto’s cage. He let them and did nothing. “The new one can never succeed in winning her. After all, I feed her well. She will never leave me”, Amar murmured. But he didn’t know the new teacher had taught her something the old one hadn’t. It was the outer world with untouchable horizon.

【答案】
One day, on the way to feed her, Amar was shocked at what Metto was doing. She slid up the door of the cage, stepped out and settled on the palm trees beside her jungle friend. Amar’s heart sank. He dashed toward them, reaching his hands out to attract Metto back. He called in anxiety, “Come back! Metto, back!” To his disappointment, Metto didn’t fly back on his arm as usual, but instead, took wing and flew away with her friend. Without hesitation, Amar chased them with all his strength but in vain. They finally disappeared in the woods. Realising he lost Metto forever, Amar stood still, looking blankly into the sky for long.
His head hanging down, Amar came back home after a long running. His heart still hurt. “If only I had locked the cage!” Amar thought to himself. Suddenly, he remembered Metto’s words “Da wakht bam teer she”— this shall to be passed. Strangely it eased his grief a bit. He began to realize Metto had taught him something important—the art of prioritizing things. “At last, he prioritized freedom over comfort.” He thought of his own life too. Then Amar decided to prioritize his dream and tell his parents.

(2024届广东省佛山市高三下学期二模)“Mom, please,” Ann a begged eagerly. “Please, let me do it by myself!” She had never made cookies by herself before, but at the age of nine, she felt capable of handling many things. Her friends had been baking cupcakes for a year. Yet, it seemed her parents had little faith in her.
“Anna is going to make cookies Alone ” her brother, Carl, asked with a laugh. “That is going to be disaster!” Carl used big words to act smarter than Anna. Having a big brother could be annoying. Admittedly, Anna always appeared clumsy. But that was before she turned nine. She thought her parents should realize she would do better now.
She was going to silence all those doubts. No more eye-rolling from her big brother. No more “You’re too young, Anna” from her parents. (2024届河北省沧州市部分学校高三下学期一模)When I woke up, I felt pains all over. A pool of sticky blood surrounded my head. I lay trapped in the bottom of n smooth-walled pit(坑)with an empty water bottle.
