Mark Twain: father of American literature
On the night of Nov 30, 1835, a boy named Samuel Clemens was born in Florida, US. Many years later, the world would know this boy as Mark Twain.
Mark Twain is one of the greatest US writers of all time. Some people even call him the father of American literature.
Like many US writers of his day, Twain had little school education. As a teenager, he worked as a printer. Later, he worked as a riverboat pilot, miner and freelancer for newspapers. These experiences gave him wonderful writing material.
Mark Twain is considered the greatest humorist of his age. His jokes go to the roots of human nature. In 1873, Twain released a book called The Gilded Age. The book made fun of the very wealthy people of the time.
Besides humor, Twain developed a unique writing style that was very American. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885 in the US) describes the adventures of a boy, Huck Finn, and a black slave, Jim. Twain used dialects in the novel, making the character’s speech sound like real Americans: using local dialects, newly invented words, and regional accents.
Twain’s writing style has influenced many writers. “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn,” Ernest Hemingway wrote in 1935.

It talks about friends and enemies, trucks and roads, farms and crops. People in many parts of the world like country music, because everyone can understand what the music is about.

They were not well-educated and so they sang about their daily life in very simple words. They played guitars, violins, and other instruments. In the south of America, many people added instruments from their homes, like bottles and spoons. When cowboys visited their friends and families on holidays like Thanksgiving, they usually sang and played western country music.
In recent years, many musicians have made western country music a little different from the one in the past. These changes make the songs sound even better. Today singers such as Carth Brooks, Reba McEmtire, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Eddie Rabbitt, LeAnn Rimes, Randy Travis and a group called Alabama are singing and playing in different styles. People may have some unclear memories of their childhood, but almost everyone will remember the beautiful princess and the cruel queen in “Snow White”, the little girl and the big gray wolf in “Little Red Riding Hood”. 41. For example, “True love can overcome anything”, and “Even a frog can turn into a prince”. However, at a certain age, we start to learn new things about life, especially that love doesn’t always win, and that a frog is just a frog.
42. Just look at cartoons like “The Lion King” and “Frozen”, which have millions of fans young and old. And this year’s Lucerne Festival in Switzerland—a classical music festival—will also feature the themes of “Childhood” and “Fairy tales”.
“Fairy tales endure because they are the stories of our lives in their most stripped down form,” wrote US author Laura Packer. “They are stories of love and loss, desire and death, riches and ruin.” 43. But if children only see just one side, adults usually see the other. For example, in the movie “Maleficent”《沉睡魔咒》, we’re told the tale of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the evil(邪恶)queen. 44. Instead, she suffers great losses growing up, leading to the creation of her “evil” side. And in US author James Finn Gamer’s book “Politically Correct Bedtime Stories”, he tells the classic story of “Little Red Riding Hood”, but with a modern touch.
45. They may usually start with “Once upon a time but as we grow older, we learn that every story doesn’t always need a happily ever after” to be a good one.
A. Fairy tales are all about reality. B. But somehow, our love for fairy tales never dies. C. Most of us get our earliest life lessons from fairy tales. D. The theme of fairy tales is to teach people courage and kindness. E. It looks like fairy tales aren’t just stories our parents read us at bedtime. F. Unlike the children’s version(视角) of the story, we see that the queen wasn’t born this way.

In 1873,
Twain released a book called The Gilded Age.
In 1910, Twain died of heart disease. But his brilliance keeps on shining to this day.

阅读短文及文后选项,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
