Along with firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce and vinegar, tea is regarded as one of the seven necessities for life in China. Now, it is also deeply loved by the people all over the world.
On Nov. 29th, 2022, Chinese traditional(传统的) tea making skills were added to the Intangible Cultural Heritage List(非物质文化遗产名录). Since thousands of years ago, Chinese people have been planting, picking, making and drinking tea. It is a Chinese tradition that a host should welcome visiting guests with boiled tea. A poem by Song poet Du Lei reads: I offer tea, not wine, to a guest on a cold night.
Boiling tea is one of the oldest Chinese tea brewing methods(泡茶方法), dating back to the Tang Dynasty. Tea leaves were boiled for along time and sometimes they were cooked together with different kinds of herbs(草药) and fruits. During the waiting time, people could enjoy a quiet time. Later in the Ming Dynasty, a faster and easier method became more popular—steeping(冲泡).
However, the old method is now making a comeback among Chinese young people. On the app Xiaohongshu, there are over 40,000 posts on the topic of stove-boiled tea(围炉煮茶). They roast tea leaves before boiling them in a teapot on a stove. People sit around the stove in a natural setting and have snacks with their hot tea.
Through stove-boiled tea, people can taste a slower life and find their inner peace. As is written in one Xiaohongshu post,“It is very relaxing to drink hot tea and chat with best friends.”

Open an app, such as Meituan, Eleme or Freshippo, then you can place your order and wait for your food to be sent to your home. The online food delivery(配送) services are very popular in China these days. About 544 million Chinese people are using them.
Which group of people is ordering food online the most Unsurprisingly, it's mainly young people. A study shows that 86.3% of the service's users are between 20 and 34 years old. These people who live in small families are the main force driving the development of the food delivery industry(行业).
Small families depend greatly on food delivery services. According to another report, Chinese families have changed in size over the past twenty years. In 2002, only 7.7% of families were single-person households. But this number went up to 25.7% in 2022. The number of two-person families climbed from 18.4% in 2002 to 33.8% in 2022. For small families, cooking takes more time and is resource-consuming (耗时耗材), so ordering food online has become more popular.
The improvement of China's food delivery services has also helped online food ordering become more popular. According to Meituan's report, the time it takes to make a food delivery went down from 38 minutes in 2016 to 20 minutes in 2022.
