Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Dear Michael,
How's your vacation?I'm visiting my uncle in Spain. He lives in the sunny and beautiful city of Valencia,in Spain.
Yesterday,I had great fun.My uncle took me to the tomato festival in Bunol, which is just 30 miles away from where my uncle lives. You have probably never heard of this festival before.Neither have I.The tomato festival is called “La Tomatina” in Spanish. It was the biggest and messiest tomato fight in the world. When we first got to the square where the festival took place,it was very crowded with people from all around the world, and many trucks were carrying tomatoes. My uncle told me the crowded people here were around 38,000 and this was more than four times the population of Bunol. The tomato fight started as soon as the first banger was beaten. Then everyone including me started throwing tomatoes at each other.I took red tomatoes and threw them at anyone that ran, moved, bent down,or turned around.Tomatoes must be squashed(捏扁) before people threw them in order not to hurt anybody.
After a little while, the streets, people and nearby buildings were splashed(溅起) with red. There was no winner in this fight, but we all had fun.As soon as a second banger was beaten, people stopped throwing.
I really had a great time.I wish you were here, too.I hope I hear from you soon.Take care.
From Spain

Sure,it's good to get along well with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant.
And yes,it's good to get along well with your teacher because,in general,it's smart to learn how to get along well with the different types of people you'll meet throughout your life.
In fact, kids who get along well with their teachers not only learn more, but they're more comfortable with asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier for them to understand new materials and makes them do their best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher,he or she can be someone to turn to with problems, such as problems with learning or school issues(问题).
Here is a question:what if you don't get along with your teachers? In fact, teachers want to get along well with you and enjoy seeing you learn. But teachers and students sometimes have personality clashes(个性冲突),which can happen between any two people. If you show your teacher that you want to make the situation better,he or she will probably do everything possible to make that happen.By dealing with a problem like this, you learn something about how to get along with people who are different from you.
However,if a certain teacher isn't your favorite, you can still have a successful relationship with him or her especially .Here are some of those responsibilities:
Attend class ready to learn.
Be prepared for class with the right pencils, books, and completed assignments(作业).
Listen when your teacher is talking.
Do your best,whether it's a classroom assignment,homework,or a test.

Tyra Winters was a high school student in Texas. One day,she was marching towards her home after the school day.As she slowly made her way down the street, the 17 year old was enthusiastically planning the coming weekend party with her best friends, thinking of all the music, laughter, and excitement.
All of a sudden,a horrific scream was heard in the street.Turning back,Winters saw a boy about two years old lying on the sidewalk. And his wild mother was begging for help.“Someone help me,someone help me”.The little boy,Clarke Hornback,as his mother told, had been sucking on a piece of candy when it slid down the back of his mouth. It was stuck in his throat and blocked his windpipe (气管).Clarke's face was bright red.“There was no coughing;there was no breathing!” Clarke's mother,Nicole Hornback cried in great panic.
The crowds soon gathered around the poor boy and the mother. The boy was just gasping (喘气) for air.No one seemed to know how to help.
Except for Winters, who had always had dreams of becoming a surgeon for children! She had learned the first aid knowledge for treating choking. It was time for her to save the boy's life.Knowing that the clock was ticking, she ran to the child.

By the time Winters got to Clarke, the boy's face had tuned purple. “I got him!” she yelled to Nicole as she grabbed the boy from her.“I tilted him and gave a good three back thrusts,” she told the local CBS station.Soon, the boy coughed up the piece of candy, gasped, and began breathing again.Without another word,Winters handed Clarke back to his mother and ran back to her friends before they left her behind.
It all happened so fast that Nicole even had no time to thank the girl.Winters's heroic actions left Nicole speechless.“I don't really have any words,” she said.“The words that you would say to anyone who does something for you is ‘thank you.’ But that doesn't seem good enough.” Finally, with the help of the online media, they found the warm hearted girl,Winters and Nicole thanked her in person.课时分层作业(六)

The clothes you wear. The food you eat.The color of your bedroom walls.Where you go and how you get there. The people you hang around with. What time you go to bed. What do these things have in common? You're asking. They're just a few examples of many hundreds of things that your parents controlled for you when you were a child.
As a kid,you didn't have a say in everything;your parents made decisions about everything from the cereal you ate in the morning to the pajamas you wore at night. And it's a good thing,too-kids need this kind of protection on their own.
But kids will grow up and become teens. And part of being a teen is developing your own identity-one that is separate from your parents'.But as you change and grow into this new person who makes your own decisions, your parents have a difficult time adjusting(调整).
In many families,it is this adjustment that can cause a lot of fighting between teens and parents. And issues like the type of friends you have or your attitudes to partying can cause bigger arguments, because your parents still always want to protect you and keep you safe,no matter how old you are.
The good news about fighting with your parents get more comfortable with the idea that their teens have a right to certain opinions. It can take several years for parents and teens to adjust to their new roles, though. In the meantime, focus on communicating with your parents.
Sometimes this can feel impossible-like they just don't see your point of view and never will. But talking and expressing your opinions can help you gain more respect from your parents.
Keep in mind, too, that your parents were teens once and that in most cases, they can relate to what you're going through.

“We said no to the invitation to the birthday party because my child says they're not even friends.”
When I read the above words,I felt heartache.
I know birthday parties can be like a trouble, but let's believe the parents who sent that invitation weren't trying to get more gifts for their kids or make things more complicated (复杂的).
For some kids, managing school and friends is easy.Maybe you have a child who's outgoing, self confident or maybe you have a child who doesn't have any problems. However, for some kids, school and friends can be very difficult.
A birthday party is a fun, exciting and good opportunity. It is a chance for the kid on the sidelines to play with other kids who don't play with him/her at school or who don't call him/her a friend.
Sometimes even when the birthday party and the theme have been decided on and the difficult decision about whom to invite has been made, there can still be doubts. Those invitations can stay untouched in the bottom of the child's backpack for days, because he/she is too scared to hand them out.
I don't know your child, and I don't know you.I do know there are parents who lie awake at night wondering if their child will have the courage to hand out the invitations in the morning;I do know there are parents who hope they can depend on other parents to teach their children to be kind enough to show up.
Maybe you'll never have to be one of the parents who find it hard.I know what that's like, because I have children who find it easy. But I also have a child who doesn't.And because of that,we've become a family that says yes to every invitation we receive.
Sometimes a birthday party invitation is not just a birthday party invitation;it's also an invitation to be a friend.

Ⅱ.读后续写
阅读下列材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Ryan first turned up for Ms.Rose's class,he was kind of nervous because he'd heard Ms.Rose could be a real monster sometimes. But as Ms.Rose started with an overview of what they'd be doing during the year in a pleasant voice, she looked nice enough. Then with a more serious tone, she warned the students that she'd be giving them homework assignments, which were not to be handed in late, and they were to be completed fully.“No excuses! No extensions!”
That day she assigned the class its first homework. They had to do a sheet of math problems and read a short story. It wasn't due until Thursday, but she suggested they do it immediately that night.“Homework has a way of piling up,” she said, with her eyes narrowing slightly. But today was only Monday! There was plenty of time,Ryan thought.
So when school was over,Ryan and his friends ran off to play baseball.Exhausted after the game,he entertained himself with his favorite TV show, leaving his homework aside on his desk.Days passed quickly.Ryan was free of worries most of the time, while Ms.Rose just occasionally reminded them of the deadline, and that she wouldn't tolerate anyone not having done it.
On Wednesday, after dinner,he suddenly realized that his homework was due the next day.He raced to his desk and was greeted with the most curious thing. The pile of homework really had grown taller.Oh no!What was he going to do?It looked as if the papers had towered over him, almost soaring up to the ceiling.
He really needed to get started. He did a little bit here and there, but he kept getting distracted by other work waiting for him. Finally,he couldn't even locate the homework he'd started with.Frustrated,he gave up and went to bed.Ryan tossed and turned all night and had bad dreams of paper mountains burying him alive.
The next morning, when Ryan entered the classroom,he found Ms.Rose waiting, with her face dark with rage.Obviously,Ryan wasn't the only one who suffered from the mysteriously growing assignments.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Failing to meet the deadline, the students had to watch Ms.Rose transform into a real monster.

Failing to meet the deadline, the students had to watch Ms.Rose transform into a real monster. She snapped her finger and then all the students could not move. She snapped again so that all the homework was opened in front of the students.Seeing the surprised expression of the students, she said slowly,“Only when you have finished the homework will I let you go.Otherwise, the homework will pile up more and more, and you will always have an opportunity to stay in the classroom.” Hearing this,Ryan and his classmates were alarmed but focused on their homework soon.Fortunately, over time, they completely finished their homework and handed it in.
With a satisfied smile,Ms.Rose finally released everyone, but assigned the class some extra homework. She changed from the monster to the teacher Ms.Rose.She reminded the students when it was due again. But this time,no one wanted to put his homework off.课时分层作业(一)

It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things:new teachers, new friends, and even a new school.Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while.Let's find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the things you'll be doing this year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day,but it's a great day to make a new friend,so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don't.Make the first move and you'll be glad about what you do,and so will your new friends!
Seeing friends you haven't seen for a while can make the first day a good one.You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like.Maybe you got a great T shirt on one of your vacations,or a pair of sneakers(运动鞋).It can also make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you'll be needing. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don't have time in the morning.

Attacking school fears
There are real fears and imagined ones. Most school dangers are imagined. 1 Many students have learned to fear teachers and classrooms, textbooks and tests. So first let's determine what the fears are,and then attack them in a good problem solving way.
Fear of failure
Most students have plenty of ability to meet school demands. Most assignments and courses are within reason, more likely to be boring than difficult. 2 Once you have had a few successes, you will begin to overcome this fear.
Fear of teachers
This is clearly an unreal fear.Look around at your fellow students. Some of them will be teachers. As you can see, there is nothing special about them. 3 You can get to know them better out of class.Visit them and chat with them.
Fear of talking in class
Anyone can make a mistake, but an hour later people will not even remember a mistake was made. 4 Also keep in mind that your performance in class is almost never the main part of your grade.
5
This fear can help you watch for real danger. The future can be dangerous. But to let it keep you from trying new things would be to give up life.Your own experience shows that most of the time things work out all right. The more things you try out,the more you will feel at home.
A.Fear of starting out
B.Fear of potential danger
C.Rarely it is lack of ability that makes people fail.
D.This is because they are much more concerned with themselves.
E.So don't hand over power to teachers that they don't really have.
F.However, school institutions have made most people think otherwise.
G.Often something else is the real problem, not what you first identified.

After an absence of thirty years,I decided to visit my old school again.I had expected to find changes, but not a completely different building. As I walked up the school drive,I wondered for a moment if I had come to the right address. The dirty red brick houses had been swept away.In its place stood a bright, modern block.A huge expanse of glass extended across the face of the building, and in front, there was a well kept lawn (草坪) where there used to be “an untidy gravel(沙石) yard”.
I was pleased to find that it was break time and that the children were all in the playground. This would enable me to meet some members of staff. On entering the building,I was surprised to hear loud laughter coming from what appeared to be the masters' common room.I could not help remembering the teachers in my time, all dressed in black gowns and high collars. And above all,I recalled Mr. Garston whom we had nicknamed “Mr. Ghastly”,the headmaster who had iron discipline on staff and pupils alike.I knocked at the common room door and was welcomed by a smiling young man who introduced himself to me as the headmaster. He was dressed casually in a sports jacket, and his cheerful manner, quickly dispelled(驱散) the image of Mr. Ghastly. After I had explained who I was,the headmaster presented me to the teachers all of whom were a little younger than himself, and said he would take me round the school.
Here the biggest surprise of all was in store for me.Gone were the heavy desks of old with their deeply carved names;gone too, were the dark classrooms with their ink stained, dark brown walls, and their raised platforms for the teachers. The rooms now were painted in bright colors, and the children, far from sitting straight in their places, seemed almost free to do as they liked.I looked with envy as I remembered how,as a child,I had looked at the blackboard hardly daring to whisper to my neighbor.

A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly(经常地)remind him about his meetings, his classes, even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice,at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors,“If John didn't have his head tied on,he would forget that too!” Since Smith was a professor at a well known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him.It wasn't that he was not clever,as some critical people tended to say,but just very, very absent minded.
One hot summer day,Prof.Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three hour train ride away.To make the trip more interesting for his young children,he kept the name of the town a secret. However,by the time they arrived at the station,Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit.Luckily,a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor's wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
“Oh,my dear,I forgot the name of the town.”
“What You forgot the name Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I'll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don't forget where you put it.”
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again.Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

“What is the matter now?” asked his wife. “I just can't remember why I come back and where I am supposed to be going on such a hot summer day.” replied the professor. However, the real reason was that he forgot where he had left his children.Sensing something wrong,Mrs.Smith didn't believe his words, because whenever he told a lie,he would blink his eyes usually quickly.“Tell me the truth,” ordered his wife.“As you told me,I didn't forget where I put the name of that town, but I forget the station where I left our children!” Whispered the professor, his voice trembling.“What a bad memory!” shouted the wife.
Hearing the cry,out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out what had happened. A fight between the couple was about to start when the professor's cell phone began to ring. His friend phoned to complain. The professor apologized, got into his car and drove away, leaving behind a bunch of people outside the house.Being afraid that he would make matters worse again,Mrs.Smith decided to follow him,who then called a taxi.By the time she caught up with her husband, the children were already back home safe and sound.课时分层作业(二)

Anyone who's seen kids on a playground knows that most children are naturally physically active and love to move around. But what might not be apparent is that climbing to the top of a slide or swinging from the monkey bars can help lead your kids to a lifetime of being active.
Watch for Changing Interests
As time goes by,your child may lose interest in old favorites, such as soccer. The trick is to help your child continue to be active, even if league play fails halfway.Staying active and keeping fit are the goals,so help find other activities that your child enjoys.
As they get older,it can be a challenge for kids to get enough daily activity.Reasons include increasing demands of school,a feeling among some kids that they aren't good at sports,a lack of active role models, and busy working families.
And even if kids have the time and the desire to be active, parents may not feel comfortable letting them freely wander around the neighborhood as kids once did.So their opportunities might be limited.
Despite these barriers, parents can instill(逐步灌输) a love of activity and help kids fit it into their everyday routines.Doing so can establish healthy patterns that will last into adulthood.
Benefits of Being Active
When kids are active, their bodies can do the things they want and need them to do.Why?Because regular exercise provides these benefits:
·strong muscles and bones
·weight control
·decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes
·better sleep
·a better outlook on life

Doctors have a new weapon in the battle against obesity(过度肥胖)—a talking plate that tells people not to eat too quickly. The Mandometer monitors the amount of food leaving the plate, and tells users,“Please eat more slowly.”
The £1,500 Swedish device is to be used in a National Health Service plan to help hundreds of obese families lose weight. It comes in two parts—a scale placed under the plate and a small computer screen showing a graphic(图表) of the food gradually disappearing as the user eats.A red line on the screen shows the user's eating speed, while a blue line shows a healthy rate.If the user eats too fast, the red line angles away from the blue one, warning him or her to ease off.If the lines deviate(偏离) too much, the computer voice comes on,and the screen flashes the message “Are you feeling full yet?” to remind users to think about whether they have had enough.
Britain has an increasingly serious obesity problem, with one in four adults and one in seven children classed as obese. After a recent trial using the device, experts believe teaching obese people to eat more slowly will help them know when they are full.Around 600 families with at least one obese parent and child (aged five or older) were targeted in the project by Bristol University, along with GPs and nurses.
Professor Julian Hamilton Shield, who is leading the plan, says obese children and adolescents using the Mandometer ate from 12 to 15 percent less per meal at the end of the 12 month trial.Six months after they stopped using the device they still ate less, and continued to lose weight.“It will be a powerful tool to help families retrain their eating habits,” he says.

As the pandemic separates us from loved ones, many of us are trying to stay connected through texting, email, and social media, even taking the opportunity to reconnect with long lost friends.
But if our goal is to feel closer to people and enjoy our conversations more,we'd better pick up the phone, according to a new study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology.
In the study, participants(参与者) imagined having a conversation with a friend they hadn't been in touch with for at least two years and made predictions(预测) about how it would feel to connect by phone versus(对比) email.“We think it's going to be awkward to talk to somebody, but that just turns out not to be the case,” says lead author Amit Kumar.“Instead...people form stronger connection when they're talking on the phone than when communicating over email.”
The same result held true when the researchers had participants do a conversation exercise with strangers using either video chatting, audio(声音的),only chatting,or text chatting.People who used media that included the voice had more satisfying exchanges and felt closer to their new friends than the text chatters.
Why?Likely it's because our voices communicate a variety of emotions, helping others to read us better and to feel like they really know us.Hearing someone's voice helps understand each other better—in some cases, even better than video chatting.
So,while texting can be useful,it's not the best way to get the most out of socializing. If we're looking for greater happiness and connection,we should give someone a call.

In my thirty years as a Time Management speaker,I have observed a lot of what we can and should not do to increase our daily results. 1 In fact,a lot of our Time Management has to do more with what we are not doing rather than what we are doing.Sometimes our mistakes will keep us from running at a full pace.
2 We all should avoid them to help us increase our daily success,in less time and with less pressure.
Start your day without a plan of action.Without a plan, you will have worked hard but may not have done enough of right things.Time Management is not doing the wrong things quicker. 3 Time Management is doing the right things.
Work with a messy desk or work area.Studies have shown that the person who works with a messy desk spends,on average, one and a half hours per day looking for things. 4 If you have ever visited the office of a top manager, you will find that person is working with a clean desk environment.
Don't take a lunch break. Many do not take a lunch break, working through that time period in the hope that it will give them more time to produce results.Studies have shown it may work just the opposite. 5 So a lunch break, even a short fifteen minute break, gives us a chance to get our batteries all charged up again.
A.Here are some Time Management mistakes we often make.
B.In fact, after doing what we do for several hours,we start to feel tired and bored out.
C.Time Management is not necessarily working harder, but rather smarter.
D.That's seven and a half hours per week.
E.However,many people don't think so.

G.That just gets us nowhere faster.

Have you ever received a gift that was so clearly not your taste that you wondered if perhaps it had been handed to you by mistake?Worse, have you ever given a present and watched your friend look as though she had opened the wrong box?Maybe she responded with a polite “Why,thank you,” but you knew you had missed the mark. Why do presents sometimes go wrong? And what do your choices (good or bad) reflect about your personal qualities
Choosing the right gift is an art,I believe. It calls for empathy—the ability to put yourself into someone else's head and heart. We're all able to do this; in fact,we're born with a kind of natural empathy. After the earliest period of childhood, however,it needs to be reinforced(加强)—by our parents, teachers, friends. When it isn't,we're not able to understand other people's feelings as sharply. This can show in the gifts we select, and so can many other emotional qualities.
Think back to the presents you've given over the past year, the time and effort you put into your selection, how much you spent, your thoughts while you were shopping, and your feelings when the receiver opened the package.Keep in mind that what you choose displays your inner world.(Of course, you may express yourself differently with different friends, relatives, and other people you know.)
We live in a society where exchanging presents is an important part of communication.Ignoring the tradition won't make it go away.If you really dislike such a tradition, tell your friends ahead of time.

Hi Irene,
I am so upset with my best friend because she refuses to accept my apology or listen to me.She won't forgive me no matter what I say.She says there's no way back and I should let it go.
Signed,
Maya
Hi Maya,
I can understand how upsetting it is to lose a best friend.Best friends have an emotional investment(感情投资) in the friendship. They also spend a great deal of time together,so breakups leave a huge sadness in both friends' lives.
You haven't shared the details of the argument or misunderstanding you had with your friend but problems may appear unexpectedly in all relationships.
Sincere apologies can often smooth things over.In fact, they can make the relationship stronger.
Why won't your friend forgive you? Here are a few possibilities:
·The mistake was so serious(e.g.a poor judgment) that it was unforgivable;
·Your friend over reacted(反应过激) for uncertain reasons(e.g.perhaps because of her past or other things going on in her life now);
·This was one of a series of mistakes or misunderstandings,a final straw(稻草) that led your friend to say there was no way back.
You did the right thing by apologizing. Now you have to take a step back and give your friend the time she needs to cool off.You could try writing to her a note if you want to explain yourself but avoid apologizing repeatedly.
If she doesn't respond or change her mind, there's not much more that you can do.It takes two persons to sustain a close friendship.
Hope this helps and that you begin to heal from this loss.
Best,
Irene

Once as it got dark,Kathy began to worry. She texted his brother Cris, telling him to drive snowmobiling buddy(雪地汽车) to get to the highway and find her.

Nobody knows what bombs were supposed to hit during the war,but they landed in a small orphanage (孤儿院).Two children were killed, and several children were wounded, including a girl, about eight years old,who suffered wounds to her legs.Without immediate action, she would die from loss of blood and shock.
A quick blood typing showed that several of the uninjured children could help. Then the doctor tried to explain to the frightened children that unless they could give some blood to their little friend she would certainly die.He asked if anyone would be willing to give blood. After several long moments,a little hand slowly went up,dropped back down, and a moment later went up again. It was Jasper.
He was quickly laid on a bed,his arm cleaned, and a needle was put into his arm.Through all of this,he lay stiff(僵硬的) and silent. After a moment,he let out a long sob, quickly covering his face with his free hand.
“Is it hurting,Jasper?” the doctor asked.
Jasper shook his head silently, but after a few moments more tears came, and again he tried to cover up his crying.Again the doctor asked him if the needle in his arm was hurting, and again Jasper shook his head. But now he was silently crying, his eyes held tightly shut, his fist in his mouth trying to stop his sobs.
The doctor now was worried that something was very wrong. At this moment,a nurse came and had a face to face talk with the boy. After a moment, the little boy stopped crying, and looked questioningly at her. When she nodded,a look of great relief spread over his face.
It turned out that Jasper thought he was dying. He thought he had to give all his blood so the little girl could live.
“But why would you be willing to do that, anyway?” asked the doctor.
“She's my friend.” answered the boy simply.
