My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes — changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (专注的). Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the urge (冲动) was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.
1.What made the writer check the phone more often than before
2.When did the writer start noticing his changes

4.Would you like to follow the writer’s example Why or why not (Please give two reasons.)

Smile to the Lost Present
The one who has never gained something will never experience the pain of losing whatever that something is. That is pretty clear. But I consider the absence of the joy of “having” to be more miserable (痛苦的) than that of having lost something after having once had it.
When I was six years old, a lovely doll caught my eye. My mom refused to buy it for me, so I took a “job”, my first, selling sweets in a park. Holding the doll which had been earned by myself, I was the happiest girl in the world. However, the doll ended up losing during a family trip. My tears couldn’t bring it back.
In Grade Nine, my closest friend became estranged (疏远) from me. We had shared our innermost secrets with each other and supported one another through difficult times. At the time she kept me at a distance, I was very disappointed and even wished I had never known her. Accustomed to our friendship and her company, I didn’t know what to do without her at one time.
Recalling the past, I’m not that sad about those lost treasures now. Instead, I am thankful for them for making my life colorful. I am proud of the persevering little girl who managed to acquire her coveted doll. And the memory of my ex-friend’s warm smile continues to encourage me from time to time. How much would I have missed in life if I hadn’t bought that doll or hadn’t befriended that girl
Experiences are of great importance to our lives. The world is so changeable that nothing is able to last forever. Nothing actually belongs to us except our own feelings. How much regret do you think exists in this unfilled blank which we create for ourselves when we give up on our reasonable wants just because of our fears of potential loss For me, nothing could be more miserable than a risk-free but boring life in which you have the constant desire for something but have not the courage to make it your own!
Face peacefully the fact that, while the treasure itself is gone, the memories are still very much alive. Walk out of the shadow and accept the new present that is being delivered to you. Let these wonderful past moments
shine like stars in the night sky.
Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it once happened.

I’m no literary Luddite (反对新技术的人). I bought an iPad with my first paycheck from my first full-time job after graduating from college. But after two years of reading occasionally on the device, I gave it away to my brother. It just wasn’t the right reading experience for me.
Technology lovers choose e-readers over books because e-readers are more convenient. They’re right. It is
objectively easier to carry a 7oz (盎司) tablet with thousands and thousands of books at your fingertips than it is to carry five books in your bag, which is exactly what I did on vacation.
But I don’t read for convenience. I read to learn more about the world and myself. I have made friends by seeing a book cover in a cafe and noticing that it was the same title that I was reading. I can trace my life by the books that have been my companions. When I open an old book and come across my previously scribbled notes — shaky ones when I’ve been reading on the subway, covered in sand if I read it at the beach, next to a train ticket if I was traveling — I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to reread. It’s just not enough to simply consuming the story, which is what e-readers are great for.
When I read paper books, I hold onto them for long periods of time. I just purchased a new bookshelf specially for my “to be read” pile. Once in a while, I go through the process of deciding which books to donate (捐赠), but usually the idea of parting with a book feels like giving away a part of my soul (灵魂).
Physical books may not be the most efficient medium, but they are the most meaningful. So keep your Kindle, by all means. But I’ll be happy hoarding (贮存,聚藏) with my library.
5.Why did the writer give his iPad to his brother
6.What does the writer want to learn by reading
7.How does the writer feel when parting with a book
8.Which do you prefer, e-books or paper books And why (Please give two reasons)
【答案】
5.Because it just wasn’t the right reading experience for him.
6.He reads to learn more about the world and himself./ He wants to learn more about the world and himself by reading.
7.Giving away a part of his soul.
8.I prefer e-books. Because they have richer content and they are more convenient to use.
【解析】本文主要介绍了电子书和纸质书的利弊,并重点讲述作者自己的阅读习惯。
5.根据“It just wasn’t the right reading experience for me.”可知,作者将iPad给他的弟弟是因为它的阅读体验不适合作者。故填Because it just wasn’t the right reading experience for him.
6.根据“I read to learn more about the world and myself.”可知,作者通过读书想更多地了解自己和世界。故填He reads to learn more about the world and himself./ He wants to learn more about the world and himself by reading.
7.根据“but usually the idea of parting with a book feels like giving away a part of my soul”可知,作者放弃一本书的感觉就像放弃了灵魂的一部分。故填Giving away a part of his soul.
8.开放式问题,作答时写出自己喜欢的类型并说明两点理由。参考答案为I prefer e-books. Because they have richer content and they are more convenient to use.

How much pocket money do you get from your parents every month What do you often do with your money
We asked three British middle school students for their opinions on pocket money.
Ruth Sawyers:
I get 5 pounds every week from my parents. I usually save 1.5 pounds and spend the rest.
The two things I usually like to buy with my pocket money are story books and Lego Blocks (乐高). I don’t really think about getting more pocket money. And I even don’t talk about pocket money with my friends at school. If some people’s parents give them too much pocket money, other children might get jealous (嫉妒). It’s important not to show off what you’ve got.
Maya Varsani:
I get 6 pounds from my mum and 8 pounds from my dad every month. I try to save and buy presents for my family. Last year, I bought my mum a lipstick (口红) for Mother’s Day, which cost 9.5 pounds.
Jimmy Segalow:
My mum gives me 10 pounds a week. She says I can either spend it in the school canteen (餐厅) or she will make me a packed lunch, then I can spend the 10 pounds on whatever I want.
I like Nike trainers. If they cost 50 pounds and I only have 40 pounds, my mum might give me an extra (额外的) 10 pounds. But I have to do some housework instead.

Have you ever unlocked a Hello Bike Have you ever used Meituan to order a meal Have you ever enjoyed watching the short-form videos on Douyin Well, if no one had invented the cell phone, none of these would have been possible.
Luckily, someone did invent the cell phone. That person is Martin Cooper, and he did that 51 years ago, in 1973.
Cooper used to work for Motorola. In the 1970s, the company was competing with AT&T, a larger company, to make a cell phone system. Cooper didn’t think Motorola’s product was good enough. He didn’t like AT&T’s idea of a car phone, either. The man wanted to give the world something new. He wanted to make it possible for people to talk on their phones anywhere.
It took Cooper and his team 90 days to design (设计) the world’s first cell phone. The product was called DynaTAC. People could talk on it for 25 minutes before its battery (电池) died. The phone’s short battery life wasn’t a big problem, Cooper once joked. Why Well, the phone was too heavy (1, 100 grams) to hold in hand for too long!
On April 3, 1973, Cooper made the world’s first public cell phone call. He called Joel Engel, an AT&T manager. Cooper told Engel, “I’m calling you on a cell phone. It’s a real, handheld cell phone.” On the other end of the line, there was only silence.
Cell phones have changed a lot since that first call. They’re much smaller and can do many more things. Cooper, now 96, is surprised at the progress. But the man has also kept thinking about life in the future. “I must keep learning all my life,” he says. “Or I’ll lose the ability to learn—that would be terrible!”
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
14.When did Martin Cooper invent the cell phone

Have you ever seen shadow plays The shadow play is one of the oldest puppet performances in China. It was a popular folk drama in ancient China and also the ancestor (祖先) of the films in the world.
Shadow plays were once a popular form of entertainment, and they were also used for religious (宗教) and instructional purposes. Simple to perform, dramas were played out on screens or walls for thousands of years, and the shadow play is still performed in China today.
A simple lamp and a thin screen were all that were needed for a stage. Things like people, animals, furniture, walls and plants were shown on the screen by placing figurines or figures made of cardboard or leather in front of the lamp.
The lamp lighted the screen from behind, and people could move little figurines around for theatrical performances. With added music and sound effects, the plays could be quite entertaining if they were well performed. These were ancient dramas or cartoons, and they were even colorized for added entertainment by using colored translucent (半透明的) figurines. The lamp light cast a colored shadow.
One can imagine that stone-age people sat next to campfires and watched stories played out on rock walls by shadows cast by using their hands or figurines.
It is said that the Mongols in the 13th century liked to watch shadow plays in their camps. They took the entertainment with them, and it became a popular entertainment in the Yuan Empire of the 13th century.
Shadow plays were performed in France when French missionaries (传教士) returned from China in 1767 and put on performances in Paris and Marseilles. It is said that this is how the shadow play was introduced to Europe. The plays were popular in France, and they were called “Chinese Shadows” at first.
Nowadays, performers use plastics, computer controlled lightning and machinery, and modern paint and dyes to produce bright and colorful shadow figures. They can produce images that are controlled by computers, and these can be used for animation and entertainment effects in plays. It is difficult for shadow puppeteers to compete with modern entertainment technologies for an audience, but some of them are using modern materials and adopting technology to help stage interesting entertainment in China.

School Life Made Easier
Making school life simpler and more convenient is becoming a reality with the use of technology, especially in China where many schools are using inventions like AI.
One example is a school in Tianjin, which uses a smart campus (校园) system (系统) from a tech company. In classes, students get hands-on experience using simulation (模拟) devices and VR glasses, exploring rocket launches and the structure inside rockets through fun and interactive (互动的) learning. Similarly, in swimming classes, “By wearing smart earphones, they can receive real-time instructions from the coach underwater, making sure it’s safe, ” Li Rui, the school’s vice-principal, told CCTV.
At a school in Anhui, technology is improving PE classes. Self-testing tools with AI visual analysis (可视化分析) technology are used for activities like running, jumping, sit-ups, and skipping rope. A facial recognition system records students’ faces, allowing them to receive performance results immediately after each exercise. “Before, when I threw the shot put (铅球), the teacher had to use a ruler to measure the distance. Now, the results are produced automatically (自动地). You can also see which parts of your exercise need improvements, with the teacher then helping to guide you to make those improvements, ” said Wu Shengguo from the school.
Besides China, smart campus technologies are getting popularity. A university in Australia uses an app, allowing students to visualize the human heart in 3D.This tool helps students understand the heart’s different parts and blood flow.
Universities worldwide are also using AI to create helpful digital assistants (助手). A college in the UK introduced a chat robot. It provides students with information about attendance records, courses, and class
timetables, making it easier for students to manage their school lives.
Smart campuses are not just about “smart” learning;they are changing how students learn, study, and interact with their schools. These technologies are making education more interesting and convenient for students all over the world.

Ladybugs (瓢虫) are loved by people so much. In many cultures they’re considered good luck. There are
about 5,000 different types of ladybugs in the world. They come in many different colors and patterns, but the most familiar in the UK is the seven-spot ladybug, which has a shiny, red-and-black body. Most people like ladybugs because they are pretty, graceful and harmless to humans. Farmers also love them very much. They eat aphids (蚜虫) and other plant-eating pests.
Most ladybugs have oval, dome-shaped bodies with six short legs. Depending on the types, they can have spots, stripes (条纹) or no markings at all. Seven-spot ladybugs are red or sometimes orange with three spots on each side and one in the middle. Their head is black with white patches (斑点) on either side. The ladybug’s bright colors can warn animals they’d better not eat them. When they are in danger, the ladybugs produce an oily, yellow fluid from joints in their legs—and their coloring acts as a reminder to any predators who have eaten their kind before that they taste disgusting (令人厌恶的)!
These bugs have another trick to avoid danger, too—remain still and pretend to be dead. Simple, eh Birds are ladybugs’ main predators, but they also fall victims (牺牲品) to frogs, spiders and dragonflies.
Seven-spot ladybugs are native to Europe but were introduced to North America in the mid-1900s to control aphid populations. These ladybugs are happy in many different habitats (栖息地), including grasslands, forests, cities, suburbs and along rivers. During spring and summer, when they are most active, these ladybugs can be seen fluttering around or walking on the leaves of plants. But when the weather turns colder in autumn, they look for a warm, secluded (与世隔绝的) place to hibernate (冬眠), such as under rocks or even inside houses. They like to group together, too.

Sophie, a 14-year-old British girl, suddenly changed her behavior in class. She lost interest in studies and would sit in the corner with her head mostly down.
Ethan Miller, one of Sophie’s teachers, discovered that she was bullied (欺凌) online. Sophie was receiving abusive (辱骂) messages on her phone and on Faccbook. Miller shared Sophie’s story on the official website of The Children’s Society, a children’s charity in the UK.
Sophie was not alone. One in three young people, in 30 countries, said they have experienced online bullying. Twenty percent of those bullied students were not willing to go to school because of it, according to a report in September. The study surveyed more than 170, 000 young people aged 13—24 from countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. Seventy-five percent of them said that the most common online bullying cases happened on social media, like Faccbook and Twiter. The growth of social media has left many young people hurt through unfriendly and abusive messages, comments and pictures online.
The Internet world makes it easier for people to communicate with each other, but there is more danger for young people as well —and it is surprising that online bullying troubles many young people more than anything else. What’s more, online bullying could lead to serious results for young people. Such bullying makes young
people more than twice as likely to hurt themselves or even kill themselves, according to a 2018 study by the university of Oxford, UK. The research also found that young people facing online bullying were not as likely to ask for help as those bullied by traditional ways.
To deal with the problem, UNICEF has called for national helplines to support people who are bullied, along with training for teachers and parents to prevent and deal with online bullying.
Here is some advice to keep yourself away from danger on the Internet.
● Make sure that you’re careful and respectful to others, even if you don’t share similar opinions, values or beliefs.
● If you experience online bullying, the best response (回应) to a bully is no response at all.
● Keep a record of anything that shows proof (证据) of online bullying, like screenshots. You can use this to report and stop them.

There are more than 10 kinds of agricultural products in the market, including meat, chicken, live fish, eggs, vegetables and fruits. “All the produce is produced by local companies and farmers themselves. Together, they set up a weekend market to help develop local agriculture. Now it’s convenient for the farmers to sell their produce nearby.” Bai Xiaolin, the head of Yuhuang Village, said happily.

It’s a large fruit and vegetable growing village and also an aquaculture (水产养殖) village. Usually, many tourists come to the village to play and eat. “I bought dozens of local eggs and 20 kilograms of oranges. We all think the products are fresh and ecological. It’s safe to eat and the price is reasonable,” a tourist said.

3.What does the writer plan to do with his phone after the experiment
4.Would you like to follow the writer’s example Why or why not (Please give two reasons.)

Smile to the Lost Present
The one who has never gained something will never experience the pain of losing whatever that something is. That is pretty clear. But I consider the absence of the joy of “having” to be more miserable (痛苦的) than that of having lost something after having once had it.
When I was six years old, a lovely doll caught my eye. My mom refused to buy it for me, so I took a “job”, my first, selling sweets in a park. Holding the doll which had been earned by myself, I was the happiest girl in the
world.
Let these wonderful past moments shine like stars in the night sky.
Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it once happened.
1.What did the writer do after her mom refused to buy the doll for her
2.How did the writer feel when her closest friend became estranged from her
3.Why is the writer thankful for the lost treasures
4.Do you agree with the writer Why or why not (Please give two reasons.)

It is objectively easier to carry a 7oz (盎司) tablet with thousands and thousands of books at your fingertips than it is to carry five books in your bag, which is exactly what I did on vacation.
But I don’t read for convenience. I read to learn more about the world and myself. I have made friends by
seeing a book cover in a cafe and noticing that it was the same title that I was reading.

I know that some parents can’t afford to give their children much pocket money. So I try not to talk about my pocket money at school.
9.How much pocket money does Ruth Sawyers spend every week

Have you ever unlocked a Hello Bike Have you ever used Meituan to order a meal Have you ever enjoyed watching the short-form videos on Douyin Well, if no one had invented the cell phone, none of these would have been possible.
Luckily, someone did invent the cell phone. That person is Martin Cooper, and he did that 51 years ago, in 1973.
Cooper used to work for Motorola. In the 1970s, the company was competing with AT&T, a larger
company, to make a cell phone system.

19.What were shadow plays used for
20.How were shadow plays introduced to Europe
21.What challenge do shadow puppeteers meet
22.Would you like to watch shadow plays Why (At least two reasons)

It provides students with information about attendance records, courses, and class timetables, making it easier for students to manage their school lives.
Smart campuses are not just about “smart” learning;they are changing how students learn, study, and interact with their schools. These technologies are making education more interesting and convenient for students all over the world.
23.What technology does the school in Tianjin use from the tech company
24.When can students at the school in Anhui receive performance results in PE classes
25.How does the chat robot make it easier for students of the college in the UK to manage their school lives
26.Would you like to study in a smart campus Why or why not (Please give two reasons.)

Ladybugs (瓢虫) are loved by people so much. In many cultures they’re considered good luck. There are about 5,000 different types of ladybugs in the world.
请务必将1—5小题的答案写在答题卡的相应位置!

Such bullying makes young people more than twice as likely to hurt themselves or even kill themselves, according to a 2018 study by the university of Oxford, UK.
37.Why did Sophie suddenly change her behavior
38.According to the survey, where do they most probably meet online bullying
39.How does online bullying hurt young people
40.What is the best response to a bully
41.What other advice can you offer to stop bullying (请自拟一句话作答)

Recently, on the roadside of Yuhuang Village in Tongliang, some people were choosing agricultural (农业的) products. This is a new village project called the Weekend Market.
Yuhuang Village is an agricultural village that is 5 kilometers away from Tongliang City. There are 1024 farmers here. It’s a large fruit and vegetable growing village and also an aquaculture (水产养殖) village. Usually, many tourists come to the village to play and eat. This creates a lot of space for the sale of agricultural products.
After some preparation, the Weekend Market started to run on February 3. The fresh and ecological (生态的) agricultural products interested all the tourists, and more than 7,000 yuan of products were sold that day.
“The market is so well set up that we can sell things on our doorstep,” said one farmer. “In the past, it was difficult to sell home-produced vegetables, sweet potatoes and eggs. Now, they can be sold at the door, saving time and trouble. The village has done a great thing for the farmers.”
“I bought dozens of local eggs and 20 kilograms of oranges. We all think the products are fresh and ecological. It’s safe to eat and the price is reasonable,” a tourist said.
“During the Spring Festival, the Weekend Market will remain open, and tourists are welcome to buy our produce,” a head of an agriculture company said.
“With the opening of the Weekend Market, on the one hand, we organize farmers to sell fresh produce at the market, on the other hand, we strengthens (加强) the management of the environment health and the fair trade to further promote (促进) the sales of agricultural products and farmers’ income (收入). It’s really a great idea for the village’s development,” an official said.
