Known as “air taxi”, the eVTOL aircraft (电动垂直起降飞行器) completed its first inter-city flight on February 27th. The flight started from Shekou Port in Shenzhen to Jiuzhou Port in Zhuhai. It took about 20 minutes for the over 55-kilometer trip. Developed by a high-tech company, the electric-powered aircraft is able to carry five people with a speed of 200 kilometers per hour.
If this technology can be widely used in air transportation, it will bring great convenience to us. As more and more people have their own cars, we always spend hours being stuck in the street. If this new invention can carry passengers in daily life, electric air taxis will work as a solution to our congested cities. We will then live and work in three dimensions (维度) then.
However, the industry will need to deal with a lot of difficulties. Laws, costs and public acceptance stand in the way of widespread use of air taxis, according to Tim Schwanen, who is the director of the Transport Studies Unit at Oxford University
“In some ways, technology isn’t the difficult part,” Schwanen said. “There are problems around laws and costs, and there are problems around markets. Do we want these services Do we need them ”

Have you ever imagined being able to communicate with your pets at home and have them understand everything you say It sounds too good to be true, but scientists have started using AI to help communicate with animals.
Professor Bake told Scientific Magazine that AI allows humans to use technology to watch and understand the sounds and signals animals communicate with so we humans can try to speak back to them. She said trying to communicate in animals’ language could be better than teaching them how to use human sign language. AI is already helping us communicate with bats and bees. This could change what we know about these animals and our relationships with them.
Professor Bake explained how Scientist Tovel had used recordings and AI to understand bats. “Bats have their own language. They often argue over food. They have different names, or ‘signature calls’,” she said, “mother bats lower their voice when speaking to their babies. Their voice can never be heard with human ears. But AI makes this possible because a computer can be trained to listen like a bat.”
Actually, AI has so far achieved a lot in this field. For example, the computer not only listens but also watches bees’ body movement to understand what they are communicating. Bake said scientists now know how bees say things such as “be quiet” or “stop”. Scientist Landlof even created a robot Honeybee that entered a bee’s home and was able to communicate with other bees when it wanted them to stop doing something or fly.
1. How does the writer start the passage

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI人工智能) technology has developed rapidly and is being used in people’s life and work. From self-driving cars to smart homes to data analysis, AI is gradually changing the way we work and live. In this situation, many traditional human work can be replaced by intelligent tools. On the one hand, people are happy to have so many useful AI tools to make our work and life easier. On the other hand, people are worried that their jobs will be replaced by AI tools, and can’t find jobs to live on.

①That future is almost here. “I think it’s going to happen. Definitely in ten years…and hopefully much, much faster,” said Sebastian Thrun in 2021. At that time, his young company Kitty Hawk Corporation was working on developing a flying car known as eVTOL, or Electronic Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicle(车辆).
②Flying to work or school sounds unbelievable. Not only is it fun to fly, but “there would never be traffic again, because the sky is very, very large,” says Thrun. He also thinks eVTOLs could be greener than common cars. “We go much faster, we go in a straight line, we fly on less energy,” he says.
③So far, though, flying cars haven’t taken off as a product. Will their day come There are still many problems to solve. Their high price means most people won’t be able to afford one. So, some companies are developing them as air taxis that people could pay to ride. The main problem with flying cars is safety. Accidents in the air are dangerous to both the passengers and anyone on the ground beneath. To make eVTOLs safer, many developers are aiming to make them self-flying—no human pilot required.
④Another problem is space. Most aircraft need long runways to take off and land. Lifting straight up and down like a helicopter solves this problem. But eVTOLs still need special spaces, called vertiports, for take-off and landing. Finding places to put these could be tricky, especially in crowded cities. But maybe some could go on top of buildings.
⑤What do you think Would you enjoy riding to school or to visit a friend in a self-flying taxi Are flying cars a good idea, or should we find other ways to get around in the near future
1. What is Sebastian Thrun’s opinion about the future of flying cars
A. He thinks it will never happen.
B. He thinks it will happen in the next century.
C. He is not sure about the future of flying cars.
D. He believes it will happen in ten years and faster.
2. Why are some companies developing flying cars as air taxis
A. To solve safety problems. B. To make them cheaper.
C. To provide rides for people. D. To compete with common cars.
3. What is the possible structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.
4. What is probably the best title of the passage
A. Is a Flying Car Your Dream Car B. Will Future Flying Cars Need Drivers
C. The Exciting World of Electric Taxis D. The History of Air Travel Technologies
【答案】1. D 2. B 3. D 4. A

Four zebrafish (斑马鱼) and algae (水藻) live inside it. The algae give the fish oxygen , keeping them alive. The tank can also feed the fish, control the temperature and lighting, and collect fish eggs by itself.
Why zebrafish They are very small vertebrates (脊椎动物) and they share 70 percent of their genes with humans. “Next, we plan on bringing mice to space. We’ll raise them there for a while and then bring them back to Earth for further study,” Zhang Wei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国科学院) told CCTV News. Studying animals in space can help scientists understand how the human body reacts (反应) to space conditions.

Known as “air taxi”, the eVTOL aircraft (电动垂直起降飞行器) completed its first inter-city flight on
February 27th.
Do we want these services Do we need them ”
Besides, car designer Frank Stephenson, who designs Lilium’s aircraft, said companies must make safety into their first consideration (考虑). “The moment when one of these things has a problem, you’re going to lose a lot of public confidence and trust.” he said.

China sent a new X-ray astronomical satellite in space, Einstein Probe, on Jan. 9, 2024.
According to Yuan Weimin, a researcher of the satellite project, the satellite is expected to find the first light from supernova explosions (超新星爆炸) in the universe, monitor high-energy transient (瞬态) objects in the universe, which are now poorly understood by scientists.
When developing the satellite, a new generation of detection equipment (探测设备) with large fields of view and high sensitivity (灵敏度) was needed. But the important question was how to make such equipment.
Lobsters (龙虾) are a kind of sea animal which can be found around the world. Scientists discovered early on that lobsters’ eyes are different from other animals’. Lobsters’ eyes are made up of lots of tiny square tubes, pointing to the same center, which allows light from all directions to reflect in the tubes and meet on the retina (视网膜), which gives lobsters a large field of view. Scientists then simulated (模仿) the lobsters’ eyes to create a telescope to catch X-rays in space.
Through working together with other organizations, the X-ray Imaging Laboratory began the research and development work on lobster-eye X-ray imaging technology in 2010 and finally made a breakthrough.
“Thanks to the lobster-eye telescope technology, the Einstein Probe is able to monitor the poorly known soft X-ray band with a large field of view and high sensitivity,” Yuan said.
1. What is Einstein Probe
A. A newly-found planet. B. A newly-built space station.
C. A new X-ray astronomical satellite. D. A new telescope technology.
2. Why was Einstein Probe sent in space
A. To enlarge the field of view. B. To catch the supernova explosion.
C. To monitor the sensitivity of objects. D. To improve the detection equipment.
3. How did scientists create the telescope technology
A. By simulating the lobsters’ eyes. B. By observing lobsters’ movement.
C. By doing experiments on sea animals. D. By comparing lobsters with other sea animals.
4. What can we infer from the passage
A. The new detection equipment looked like a lobster.
B. Scientists knew nothing about supernova explosion.
C. China is the first country to send Einstein Probe into space.
D. The lobster-eye telescope technology leads to Einstein Probe’s success.

①Open AI has introduced a new technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create high-quality videos from text descriptions.
②The company showed a few short, vivid and realistic videos, including mammoths (猛犸象) moving forward in a snowy field and people doing everyday things like reading a book or walking down a city street.
③Open AI calls the new system Sora. “Sora is able to generate complex scenes with different kinds of characters, specific types of motion, and correct and true details of the subject and background based on simple text prompts (提示语),” the ChatGPT makers said.
④The new tool isn’t the first of its kind. Other companies, including Google, Meta and AI start-up Runway, have built their own text-to-video AI models. But AI analysts (分析员) said the length and quality of Sora videos went beyond expectation and was outstanding in all of the models.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI人工智能) technology has developed rapidly and is being used in people’s life and work. From self-driving cars to smart homes to data analysis, AI is gradually changing the way we work and live. In this situation, many traditional human work can be replaced by intelligent tools. On the one
hand, people are happy to have so many useful AI tools to make our work and life easier. On the other hand, people are worried that their jobs will be replaced by AI tools, and can’t find jobs to live on.
Some young people believe that with the popularization of AI translation tools, the need to learn foreign languages is greatly reduced. After all, an APP on a smartphone can translate different languages quickly, helping people who speak different languages communicate. In addition, AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and many other such tools or websites can help people realize all kinds of ideas, such as writing, drawing, making videos, searching for materials, and analyzing data. Most AI tools can help with writing in any language. Some teenagers think the ability to write in a foreign language or a native language is not important, as long as they can use AI tools. They no longer need to spend a lot of time learning these “fungible” skills.
However, other young people have different ideas. They believe that improving information literacy (信息素养) and the ability to control AI technology is more important in the time of AI. This includes not only basic computer skills, but also thinking and moral judgment (道德判断). Students should be prepared to live with AI, learn knowledge, use AI and even develop new AI tools.
1. AI technology is not widely used in ________.
A. self-driving cars B. smart home
C. data analysis D. emotional understanding
2. AI translation tools ________.
A. can completely replace foreign language learning
B. can translate all languages easily
C. reduces the need to learn a foreign language
D. can only help users with written translation
3. What does the underlined (划线的) word “fungible” mean
A. Replaceable. B. Repetitive. C. Useless. D. Boring.
4. Which is difficult for AI tools to replace humans
