Unit 6 Pets
单元话题阅读理解练习
(23-24八年级下·广东深圳·课后作业) All pet owners know that pets use their body language to communicate with us. Since they live much simpler lives than we do and they depend on us, they need to express their needs to us. For example, squirrels (松鼠) do this with their ears, bodies and noses. Sometimes they simply want our attention. They are telling us. “My food bowl is empty.” I have one squirrel. He tells me different things. For example, when his food bowl is empty, he lets out a bowl. When he is hungry and doesn’t find food to eat, he climbs onto the table and waves his long ears on it. He jumps up on my computer desk or my lap and smells everywhere to let me know that one of the other squirrels is picking on him. New research shows that 67% of people think they understand what their pets want or need. The more we show our understanding of what they are telling us, the better our pets will be able to communicate with us and the more conversations will expand. Try to pay close attention to what your pet is “telling” you and you will find it is eager to “talk” to you.

(22-23八年级下·广东广州·期中)Humans are just like any other kind of animal. Animals show their feelings with their faces and bodies. If they show their teeth and raise their backs, they’re angry. Humans do many of these things too. You can usually tell whether someone is happy, angry, nervous or proud just by looking at
them. We do not always need words.
We only have to look at our pets to see how close animal and human body languages are. When a cat is feeling confident, it will stand very tall and put its nose into the air. Humans do the same thing when they’re feeling proud.
Monkeys are very similar to humans. For example, children often put their hands together when they want something. Monkeys use the same gesture to ask for food from other members of their group. As a greeting, monkeys touch their friend’s hand. It's similar to the way we shake hands.
So you see, we can learn a lot about ourselves by studying animal gestures.

“Why shouldn’t I do so ” I turn to my dad and ask him.
“Because it can make them sick when they are not getting the right food. For example, chocolate is children’s favorite, but it is not good for many animals. So we should protect them and feed them with their own food.” he explains.
“Sorry, Dad. Now I know it is important to understand that animals need to eat right. I won’t do that again
because it is bad for them. And thank you for telling me that.”
My dad smiles and says, “Good for you, Jim. I am so happy that you are learning to think about the result before you do something. We can help the animals by being responsible for their health. What’s more, instead of waiting for someone to feed them. I think you should keep in mind that animals are our friends, and we should help them to live freely and naturally.”

You may not know their name, but you’ve probably seen photos of them swimming in hot springs on social media. They’re called capybaras(水豚), a kind of cute animals with some amazing facts.
They are big. As the world’s largest rodents(啮齿动物), adult capybaras weigh up to 50 kg. They are as heavy as some humans! They are up to about 130cm tall. Although they are fat, they can swim fast at a speed of up to 35km an hour.
They love water. Capybaras spend a lot of time in water. Their special feet help them move quickly through water, and they can also stay underwater for up to five minutes at a time. Capybaras like to sleep in water to avoid getting sun burnt.

(22-23八年级下·广东广州·阶段练习)Dolphins are not fish. They are mammals. They live in groups and speak to each other in their own language. But they are quite different from almost all land animals. Their brains are as big as men’s and they live a long life—at least 20 or 30 years.
Like some animals, dolphins use sounds to help themselves find their way around. They also use these sounds to talk to each other and to help themselves find food. They do not use their ears to receive sounds, but use the jaw—the lower part of the mouth.
It is strange that dolphins are friendly to men, and for thousands of years, there are many stories about dolphins and men. In the 19th century, in a dangerous part of the sea near New Zealand, there was a dolphin. The seamen liked him very much and gave him a very good name, Jack. From 1871 to 1903, Jack met every boat in
the area and showed it the way. In 1903 a passenger on a boat with the name of The Penguin shot and hurt Jack. Luckily, the dolphin didn’t die, and after a long time he was well again. He guided the boats through the area for nine more years, but he didn’t help the boat The Penguin.

(22-23八年级下·广东广州·阶段练习)While I was a middle school student, I liked spending hours watching wild animals. I watched them both on TV and in zoos. In the high school, I could speak the names of many kinds of wild animals. I could also tell lots of their stories.
After getting into university, I was very sorry to learn that a lot of wild animals were disappearing. However, some people found a special way to stop it with photos. I had great interest in both wild animals and taking photos. So I became a wild animal photographer after leaving university.

(22-23八年级下·广东广州·期中)In Ireland, scientists studied a group of 42 cats. They gave them three tasks. One was to give them some delicious food out of a plate. They found that the male cats preferred to use their left paw, and the female cats preferred to use their right paw.
Being left-handed or right-handed can also include eyes, ears, claws and even tails. In Italy, scientists discovered that dogs wag their tails to the right when they see something that they like. When they see something that they don’t like, their tails go to the left.
There are lots of fun examples. Left-handed dolphins swim in a different direction around the pool. Elephants
like to swing their trunks(象鼻) in one direction. Even snakes prefer to curl up(蜷缩起来) only one way.
Many people believe that polar bears are left-handed. They say that polar bears cover their black nose with their right paw, which helps them hide in the snow when they are hunting. Then they can sneak up(慢慢靠近) on an animal, and their left paw will be free to catch it.
Scientists, however, disagree. Some have watched polar bears for thousands of hours. They never saw the bears cover their nose during a hunt. They also saw no evidence(证据) that they were left-handed. Without taking any notice of this, many websites continue to say that polar bears are left-handed.
Scientists are still learning about animals and their body languages. If you see an animal the next time, try finding out yourself which it prefers—left or right.
