Recently, a video of Zhang became popular online. Many people were shocked at her fluent (流利的) English and wondered how she had such great English skills. Actually, behind this is a long journey of persistence (坚持).
Zhang comes from a village in Hebei Province. In 2012, she got the job as a sanitation worker in Chaoyang District, Beijing. One day, she met a foreigner. The foreigner spoke a lot of unfamiliar (陌生的) words to her. She didn’t know what to do because she couldn’t understand what the foreigner said. Soon, the foreigner found that Zhang didn’t understand his words. So, he pointed to the street and gave her a thumbs-up while saying, “Good, good!” Zhang suddenly realized that the foreigner was cheering her for keeping the street clean, but she couldn’t say anything
to express herself.
This unusual experience touched Zhang, and she made up her mind to learn English. Then, Zhang found her children’s textbooks and started her learning journey. However, learning English at an older age was difficult. Zhang would easily forget the words she learned. But she didn’t flinch from facing up to the challenge. She used all her free time to learn and memorize the words over and over again. Finally, her hard work paid off. So far, she has learned around 3,000 English words and has been able to communicate fluently with foreigners. Zhang said, “Persistence is the key to learning English. Wang Jibing is a 55-year-old delivery (投递) man living and working in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. One day in 2019, Wang had an unhappy experience. A customer left a wrong address. He searched three buildings and climbed eighteen floors before he finally delivered the food to the customer who scolded (责怪) Wang for arriving late.
“ If I had argued with him, I might have got negative feedback (差评) and lost my job. I had no choice but to say sorry all the time,” recalled Wang, who makes about 6,000 yuan a month by delivering food.
On his way home that day, Wang wrote a poem, Man in a Hurry, to express his feelings. Since then, Wang has been writing poems. Wang’s poems are simple and real. He often shares them with his friends.
In 2022, one of Wang Jibing’s friends posted Man in a Hurry online. It quickly went viral (走红) and was viewed over 20 million times. The same year, Wang published a collection of more than 180 poems, under the same title. His poems and stories deeply touched people who share similar struggles in their lives.
This April, Wang published his second poetry collection, titled I Love This World Clumsily, which includes about 130 poems.
So far, Wang has written about 4,000 poems. “Those poems came to me naturally and I enjoyed writing them very much,” he said. “However, the most important thing for me is to look after my family, so I will continue with my present job.”
“Poetry is like a break from stress and away to record my life. Although there is pain stressful situations, and struggles in life, poetry makes me confident and happy,” says Wang.

(2024·江西九江·一模)Boyan Slat is an inventor from Netherlands. He likes to create big projects to solve big problems, like plastic pollution in our oceans. When he was a teenager, he started a project called The Ocean Cleanup to help with this problem.
While on vacation in Greece at 16 years old, he went scuba diving (浮潜) and saw more plastic bags than fish in the sea. This made him wonder “Why can’t we just clean this up ”. So, he started looking into the problem and possible technology solutions to clean up ocean plastic pollution. Then he looked for ways to deal with this problem and shared his ideas in a TEDx speech.
Soon, the TEDx video about cleaning up ocean plastic pollution suddenly spread widely. People really liked his ideas, and he got a lot of support. This allowed him to give up his studies in Aerospace Engineering and then set up The Ocean Cleanup. With only 300 of saved-up pocket money, Boyan started working on his plan.
It took a lot of hard work, but in the end, Boyan and his team were able to prove (证明) that their technology could clean up plastic from both rivers and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Now, The Ocean Cleanup is busy cleaning up this big area of plastic in the ocean and has also put special tools in dirty rivers to stop more plastic from getting there.

(2024·安徽合肥·一模)Every Thursday morning, the 89-year-old grandma Wu Pinxian, plays beautiful piano music for people to relieve (缓解) their stress at the outpatient department (门诊大厅) of Panyu Central Hospital in Guangzhou, CCTV News reported.
