Have you ever lost something that was important to you, and thought you’d never see it again That’s what happened to Mary Grams.

Recently, you may have seen a lot of expressions (表达) like the above online. It is the latest popular style called “roaring genre”. It has short sentences, a complaining tone and a lot of exclamation marks (感叹号).
Internet users say the style is just a way of letting out emotions (情感), and in fact, it shows an active attitude towards life. But, at first, many of us think people who speak this way are quite angry.
Sometimes we may feel afraid of the tone and the exclamation marks.
Why Because on the Internet, we can’t see the face of a person when he or she sends a message. We can only guess if that person is happy or angry. And we could be wrong.
There are rules of behavior to follow when you’re online. It is important to remember that you are dealing with “real” people. So you should use the best manners—just like you would at home or in school.
For example, when you chat in English with someone online, you shouldn’t type in all capital letters (大写字母), because this means you are shouting. It can easily upset people, even if you don’t do it on purpose. You can use asterisks, like this or lines, like this to emphasize (强调) word. Or, you can use emoticons to tell the person what you’re feeling.
Also, it is not polite to use short forms unless you are talking to your good friends. For example, use “see you later”, instead of “CU L8er”.

This winter, Blossoms Shanghai (电视剧《繁花》) has been the talk of the city and beyond. Viewers (观众) all over China have been watching and talking about the TV series. Their strong interest has even brought many fans to the city. They come to walk down Huanghe Road, eat pork chops with rice cakes, and, of course, learn Shanghainese.
Blossoms Shanghai has two versions (版本). One is in Mandarin (普通话) and the other is in the Shanghai dialect. Many people like the dialect version better. They say it better shows the magic of the city’s culture.
Part of that magic lies in the culture’s openness. Do you know what “lao hu chuang” means Well, this phrase has nothing to do with “tigers”. It comes from the English term “roof window”. In the Shanghai dialect (方言), “tiger” sounds close to “roof”. Another example is “wo se”. It comes from the word “worse”. People use it to say that they feel sad. English surely isn’t the only influence (影响) on Shanghainese. The local languages of neighboring cities have had influence on it, too.
In most schools, students are told to speak only Mandarin to make communication easier. But many students continue speaking it after school. Over time, they forget their “native language”. I recently asked some of my young Shanghainese friends how to say “kitchen” in the Shanghai dialect. Most of them answered, “zi vang”. Few said, “zao pi ge” (灶披间) or “zao dou ge”.
