(22-23八年级下·江苏南通·期末)As a teenager, you may sometimes feel helpless when having problems with your parents. Chen Zanzao, a 17-year-old boy from Shenzhen, has created a charity community called Dear Theodosia to offer professional help to families facing similar issues. It now has 2000 regular participants(定期参与者).
Chen’s idea was inspired(启发) by the three-child policy. “My friend Sina and I thought it would bring problems like parental favoritism(父母偏心),” Chen said. “Most families still don’t know any methods to deal with this.”
They started to research both scientific parenting styles and people’s needs. They read a lot of literature and studies on the topic and surveyed more than 1,000 people. They found that the most effective and healthy family relationships are when parents are highly engaged(参与的) in their children’s lives.
They then founded the community to promote(推广) the idea. “We hold lectures and discussions as well as go on radio and TV programs to promote useful information,” Chen said.
Chen and his friend Sina would do one-to-one conversations with people who felt self-conscious(难为情的) about sharing their stories. “It’s understandable that at first they need time to trust us since we are so young,” Chen said. “But listening is the key.”
“We met many parents saying, ‘I never realized raising a child would be so difficult’, so I think it’s really important that parents should think over whether they could take the responsibility before they rush into anything.”

①RVs (旅行房车) are a great way to tour the country and see the sights, but thanks to one father-daughter team, they’ve helped people who’ve lost their homes in California’s latest wildfires.
②The idea of Woody Faircloth, EmergencyRV Organization connects people who are willing to donate their RVs to those in need. So far, Faircloth with his daughter Luna along for the ride — has sent 95 RVs to California area wildfire victims (受害者). Otherwise they might wait months for emergency housing (应急居所).
③Faircloth first got the idea for the organization in 2018. Like many that year, the father was touched by the news of California’s deadly Camp Fire that burnt hundreds of homes during Thanksgiving week. The story of a man who lost almost everything but managed to survive the fire in his mobile home impressed Faircloth. Then he asked Luna what she thought about finding an RV and sending it to a family, so they could have a place to call home for Christmas, and she was 100% on board.
④Faircloth started a GoFundMe activity to provide money for the first RV that he and Luna sent to California. As the news of their journey spread, people started reaching out to him, offering to donate their RVs — and from there, EmergencyRV Organization soon formed. All the people think what Faircloth did will make a difference to those in need. It’s hoped that these donations can help more people.
⑤Many of those who receive mobile homes are firefighters. Their tireless work in fighting the fire did not prevent their own homes from burning. One such man is George Wolley, who lost his own home in the Dixie Fire on August 4th. He said, “Before I got that RV, I felt like I was a burden (负担) on everybody that helped me... I slept a lot in tents and in my car. It gave me a place to go.”
⑥Faircloth’s organization continues to grow. He’s thankful for the many things he has and happy to be in a position to help others.

(22-23八年级下·江苏宿迁·阶段练习)The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means one who offers his or her “services”. There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage(垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta(加尔各答). The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video about her work in India and all over
the world. I was so moved by her spirit(精神) to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
9.According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who _______.
A.is willing to help those in need without pay B.can afford to travel to different places
C.has a strong wish to be successful D.has made a lot of money in life
10.Tracy started her work as a volunteer _______.
A.after she met Mother Teresa B.after she finished high school
C.when she was touring Calcutta D.when she was working in a hospital
11.Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer
A.She liked to work with Mother Teresa. B.She had already had some experience.
C.She was asked by Mother Teresa. D.She wanted to follow Mother Teresa’s example.

(21-22八年级下·江苏南京·期末)Sharon first started volunteering at the age of 16. It was the summer before high school, and she hadn’t really understood the meaning behind doing something for others until that day.
Sharon was joining a charity group to the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Dallas, Texas. RMH is a “home-away-from-home” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized (住院的) child at little or no cost.
Sharon remembers her first time walking into RMH — nervous and afraid of saying the wrong thing. After only 5 minutes, she got to know families. “That day, I played with kids, laughed with the adults, and heard many stories.” says Sharon. Since then, she has volunteered with RMH. She likes the joy her volunteering brings to others.
A smile that will always live in Sharon’s memory came from a girl named Caroline — a patient whose family stayed at RMH.
Caroline had bone cancer (癌症) and her treatment made eating very difficult for her. One day Caroline’s mom tried hard to get her to eat more of her dinner.
