The giant panda is one of the most popular animals in the world. A giant panda can grow up to 1.5 meters tall and weigh up to 160kg. People think the giant panda is very lovely. ①So it is not surprising that the World Wide Fund for Nature chose the giant panda as its symbol. The WWF tells people about animals that are in danger and raises money to save them.
The giant panda only lives in the wild in China. In the early 1980s, there were only 1,000 left in the wild. The main reason why pandas are endangered is that the area where panda can live has become smaller.
The WWF works to help giant pandas in the wild in many ways. One of the ways is to increase the size of panda reserves(自然保护区). Some reserves need to be joined together by planting bamboo between them to make “corridors”. These are paths that lead from one reserve to another. No one may harm the pandas in these areas. The corridors let pandas move from one habitat(栖息地)to another to look for food. ②People are working very hard to make sure the giant panda does not die out.

The weather gets colder, days get shorter and the leaves change their colours and fall off the trees. Soon, winter is here. Snow covers the ground. People live in warm houses and wear heavy coats outside. Our food comes from the stores, but what happens to the birds
Birds do many different, amazing things to get through the winter. Some of them migrate. This means they travel to other places, where the weather is warmer, or where they can find food.
Many birds migrate in autumn. Some travel in large groups, because the trip can be dangerous. For example, geese fly in noisy V-shaped groups. Other kinds of birds fly alone.
How do they know when it is time to leave for the winter Scientist are still studying this. Many scientists think migration is part of a yearly cycle of changes that a bird goes through. The cycle is controlled by changes in the amount of daylight and the weather.
Birds can fly very long distances. For example, the Arctic tern(北极燕鸥)lives close to the North Pole in summer. In autumn, it flies south, all the way to the South Pole. Each spring it returns to the North Pole.
Most birds migrate shorter distances. Do you know how they find their way to the same place each year Birds use the sun, moon and stars for direction.

The seasons in Australia are not like ours. When it is winter in China, it is summer there. Australia is a southern country-it is in the south of the world. June, July and August are the winter months; September, October and November are spring, the summer is in January, February and December, and March, April and May are the autumn months. The north of the country is hotter than the south.
A very large part of this country has no rain at all. The east coast (东海岸地区) has rain all year, and there are no dry months there. The southeast winds blow (吹) here all the year. They bring rain from the sea. There is not much rain on the west side. The southeastern part of Australia has summer rain from the southeast winds. They only blow here in summer.
The southwestern part of Australia has winter rain. The west winds blow over the southwest in winter only. In summer, the southwest of the country has no rain. In the north of Australia, there is no rain in winter. The rain comes in summer. The northwest winds bring it.

13.Which part of the country is hotter, the north part or the south part

Chogori (乔戈里峰) stands on the Chinese-Pakistan border. Chogori is from the Tajik language, it means “high, great and magnificent”. Internationally, it is better known as K2. Chogori is about 8,611 meters high, and it is the second highest mountain in the world.
And Chogori is not Qomolangma. On the one hand, Chogori is a steeper (更陡峭的) and more dangerous peak. In fact, it is the most difficult peak to reach in the world. The first two people to reach the top of Chogori—Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni from Italy—did it in 1954. In 1986, the first woman did it too. Since 1954, only 281 people have reached the top, and 49 others have been killed (However, Qomolangma has been reached 3,000 times and only 15 climbers lost their lives). Of all the over 8,000-meter-high peaks, it has the highest death rate.
On the other hand, this great peak is for professional climbers only. Here, no commercial (商业的) climbing organization will provide you with any services, and even top-class climbers will choose their climbing partners with a particularly eagle (鹰) eye. The leader of a Japanese K2 team said when organizing his team in 1982, “We are professional climbers, and all know that if we run into trouble at a height of 8,000 meters on K2, it is impossible to get help. If you do not have the confidence and determination (决心) to face possible trouble, you should not go!”
This is Chogori! In the eyes of the top-class climbers, it is the most beautiful peak, and it is the danger that attracts them.
16.Where is Chogori
17.What’s the height of Chogori
18.When did the first two people reach the top of Chogori
19.Which is more difficult and dangerous to reach, Qomolangma or Chogori
Cats or Dogs! These can be fighting words, depending on who you’re talking to.
Clearly, there are dog people and there are cat people. Dog people prefer dogs and think they are “man’s best friends”, while cat people like cats because they think they are elegant and independent. Sometimes the two groups even argue with each other.
Dogs seem to be winning the battle. An Associated Press poll(民意调查)in 2018 showed that people in the US liked dogs more than cats. As much as 74 percent said they liked dogs “a lot” but only 41 percent said the same thing about cats. The 2018 White Paper on China’s Pet Industry also showed that there were around 11 million more dog owners than cat owners in Chinese cities.
However, cats seem to get more attention online. There are even some new slang terms to refer to them. Cats are described as “masters”(“喵主子”)online, while the dog owners are “servants who clean their masters’ feces”(“铲屎官”). Even those who don’t have pet cats are doing something called “cloud cat petting”(“云吸猫”), which refers to viewing pictures and videos of cats online.
An article in The Guardian pointed out that dog owners usually go outside to play with their pets or their neighbors’ dogs. But since cats are mainly indoor animals, they are more likely to stay at home. The internet has become a virtual(虚拟的)“cat park” for cat owners.
But it doesn’t really matter if you prefer cats or dogs. Having a connection with any animal can make us feel good.
20.What are cats like in cat people’s eyes
21.What could we know from the 2018 White Paper on China’s Pet Industry
22.How do people do something called “cloud cat petting”
23.According to The Guardian, what might be the difference between dogs and cats 答案不超过20个单词。
