Last month I got th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico called the Flower Gardens. A team of professional researchers were trying to learn more about the fish and other animals that live in this part of the sea. The Flower Gardens are a long way from the shore(海岸) and we spent three days on a boat.
The team used a piece ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) of underwater equipment to collect information. This underwater equipment is called a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The ROV could measure water depth and temperature and it also had a camera that sent live film back to the boat. The ROV was great fun. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times.
However, the thing I ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first, I was quite frightened —mainly because I couldn’t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn’t afraid anymore. It was amazing to see the colourful fish swimming around and I could see all the way to the Flower Gardens, which are almost 30 metres down.
I will never ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )forget the Flower Gardens. The trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things about science and research projects. The team were very friendly and everyone was happy to explain what they knew about the sea. It was a great opportunity and it has made me think about my goals in life. The experience will surely encourage me to work harder to become a scientist.

World Book Day fa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )lls on April 23 every year. It was set up by the UNESCO in 1995 to encourage people, especially teenagers,to discover the pleasure of reading. It is also the day to honor great writers, for example, William Shakespeare, born or dead on that day.
Many countrie ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s celebrate World Book Day. Take UK as an example. On that day, millions of school children can buy books of special price, a much lower price than usual in any bookstore. It has been done every year since 1998.
World Book Day is ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )also celebrated in China. Wen Jiabao, Premier of China, does lots of reading every day. On World Book Day 2009,he called on people to do more reading. Wen suggested that young people should spend more time reading. "Books can not change the world, but people can change the world by changing themselves through reading," he said.
Why do pe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ople like reading One big advantage is that reading helps us become more knowledgeable and more intelligent. Also, reading helps us to follow the latest developments of science and technology. Besides, reading gives us information about other cultures and places of the world. When we read, we may find many things that are unfamiliar to us. We would have to use our brain to think about them or do more reading to find out the answers. The more we read, the more we know. What’s more, reading is also one of the most important ways to learn a foreign language like English.
"Reading ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) makes a full man." Books, magazines, newspapers and other" kinds of reading materials can help us to know more about the outside world and perfect us. So it is necessary for us to spend time on reading every day.

When 19-year-old Sophi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )a Giorgi said she was thinking of volunteering to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation (基金会),nobody understood what she was talking about. But Sophia knew just how important Make-A-Wish could be because this special organization (组织) had helped to make a dream come true for one of her best friends. We were interested in finding out more, so we went along to meet Sophia and listen to what she had to say.
Sophia told us ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) that Make-A-Wish is a worldwide organization that started in the United States in 1980. “It’s a charity(慈善机构) that helps children who have got very serious illnesses. Make-A-Wish help children feel happy even though they are sick, by making their wishes and dreams come true,” Sophia explained.
We asked Sophia ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) how Make-A-Wish had first started. She said it had all begun with a very sick young boy called Chris, who had been dreaming for a long time of becoming a policeman. Sophia said lots of people had wanted to find a way to make Chris’s dream come true --so, with everybody’s help, Chris, only seven years old at the time, had been a “policeman” for a day. “When people saw how happy Chris was when his dream came true, they decided to try and help other sick children too, and that was the beginning of Make-A-Wish,” explained Sophia.
Sophia also told us t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he Foundation tries to give children and their families a special, happy time. A Make-A-Wish volunteer visits the families and asks the children what they would wish for if they could have anything in the world. Sophia said the volunteers were important because they were the ones who helped to make the wishes come true. They do this either by providing things that are necessary, or by raising money or helping out in whatever way they can.

Hospitals have no ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t always been clean, quiet places. Long ago they were dirty and overcrowded. Nurses were never taught how to look after their patients and many people died. This is the story of Florence Nightingale, who changed all this.
Florence was born ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) in 1820. Growing up, she was a quiet and serious young girl. She spent a lot of time playing with her dolls. She would pretend that the dolls were sick and she was their nurse. People would bring sick or hurt animals to her to look after. She often went with her mother to visit the poor people. They took food and medicine to the sick. It was these visits that first gave her the idea of becoming a nurse.
Her chance ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) came in 1854 when Britain went to war with Russia . Florence was asked to take a group of nurses to look after the sick and wounded soldiers. The hospitals were dirty, and there was not enough medicine. Florence and her team cleaned the hospital rooms and beds. They made sure that the bandages were clean and that the soldiers got enough medicine. Florence and her team worked hard. At night she would go from room to room checking on the patients. There was no electricity so she would carry an oil lamp with her to see where she was going. She often stayed to talk to the patients, especially if she could see that they were scared or dying.
After the war, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) Florence opened a school to teach nurses to look after their patients properly. She never really got better from the illness that she had in the war and she died in 1910.
It is tha ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nks to Florence Nightingale that we receive the proper care in hospitals today.

When a child has ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) been told he is “uncool”,it can be very painful. He may say that he doesn’t care, and even act in ways that are the opposite of cool on purpose(故意的). But these are simply ways to deal with sadness by pretending it’s nothing.
Helping a child l ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ike this has to be done carefully, otherwise the child will be guided in a wrong way. If you say “Why are you worried about what other children think about you?It doesn’t matter!”,children know that it does matter. Instead,an active way may be best. You could say,“I’m going to do a couple of things to help make school feel better for you.”
If a boy is h ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )aving trouble making friends,it helps most if he can be in a school and in a class. The teacher can arrange things so that he has chances to use his abilities to be helpful to class projects. This is how the other children learn to value his good qualities and to like him. A teacher can also raise a child’s popularity in the group by showing that he/she values that child. It even helps to put him in a seat next to a very popular child,or to let him be a partner with that child in activities, etc.
There are thing ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s that the parents can do at home, too. Be friendly when your child brings others home to play. Encourage him to invite friends to meals and then serve the dishes that they consider “super”.When you plan weekend trips, picnics, movies, and other shows, invite another child with whom your child wants to be friends.
What you can do after ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )is to give him a chance to join a group that may be shutting him out. Then,if he has good qualities,he can start to build real friendships of his own.
61.What may a child do when he or she has been told “uncool”
62.Why should people be careful when it comes to helping a child
63.How can a teacher help an unpopular child
64.Can parents do ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )something to help their children get along well with others
