Stand up and Exercise, Everybody!
Nowadays, with the growing popularity of leading a healthy life, we students are supposed to take an
active part in physical exercise. I’d like to recommend my fellow students rope skipping during the breaks
between classes.
Skipping rope can be done indoors or outdoors, which does not require any special equipment or
facilities. All you need is a skipping rope and some space. There are two reasons why I highly recommend it.
As a great way to keep fit, rope skipping helps to burn calories, strengthen muscles as well as relieve our
academic pressure. Additionally, it can be done alone or with friends, making it a social and interactive
exercise.
In conclusion, skipping rope, literally beneficial for our physical and mental well-being, is a good
choice during a short break. So grab a skipping rope and start jumping your way to a healthier lifestyle!
第二节(满分 25 分)
The next day, they found themselves facing the immediate problem of finding water. The water they
brought had run out! They searched around for the water source with every possible means, yet only to find
nothing but a maze of towering pines encircling them. Fear gnawing at their hearts, they were stranded in the
middle of nowhere and plunged into pitch darkness. After a harvestless/fruitless day, the mellow twilight
1
smoothly veiled the skyline and the tranquility prevailed over the forest, but none of the beauty was admired
by the three weary hearts. Struck by despair and remorse, Kevin had nothing to do but pray his dad could
come to rescue. To them, seconds were dragged by like centuries.
On the third night, a distant engine sound broke the terrible stillness. At the sound of the engine, they
couldn’t restrain their mixed feelings of fear interwoven with relief anymore, with tears of ecstasy welling
up in their eyes. “Here! Here!” They jumped up and down and yelled at the top of their lungs with all the
might. Fortunately, rescuers found the three eventually. No sooner had their parents come into their sight,
they dashed towards their beloved parents. Kevin’s dad ruffled Kevin’s head gingerly, “It’s a blessing that
you told me your destination!” The mellow moonlight spilled through the leaves, dispelling the previous
gloom and telling a story about the mighty nature and a rescue.

Earlier studies suggested that fatigue from virtual meetings stems from mental overload, but new research
from Aalto University shows that sleepiness during virtual meetings might actually be a result of mental
underload and boredom.
“I expected to find that people get stressed in remote meetings. But the result was the opposite —
especially those who were not engaged in their work quickly became drowsy during remote meetings,” says
Assistant Professor Niina Nurmi, who led the study.
The researchers measured heart rate variability during virtual meetings and face-to-face meetings,
examining different types of fatigue experiences among 44 knowledge workers across nearly 400 meetings. The
team at Aalto collaborated with researchers at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, where stress and
recovery are studied using heart rate monitors. “We shadowed each subject for two workdays, recording all
events with time stamps, to find out the sources of human physiological responses,” Nurmi says.
The study also included a questionnaire to identify people’s general attitude and work engagement. “The
format of a meeting had little effect on people who were highly engaged and enthusiastic about their work. They
were able to stay active even during virtual meetings. On the other hand, workers whose work engagement was
low and who were not very enthusiastic about their work found virtual meetings very tiring.”
It’s easier to maintain focus in face-to-face meetings than virtual ones, as the latter have limited cognitive
cues and sensory input. “Especially when cameras are off, the participant is left under-stimulated and may start
to compensate by multitasking,” Nurmi explains. Although an appropriate level of stimulation is generally
beneficial for the brain, multitasking during virtual meetings is problematic. Only highly automated tasks, such
as walking, can be properly carried out during a virtual meeting.
“Walking and other automated activities can boost your energy levels and help you to concentrate on the
meeting. But if you’re trying to focus on two things that require cognitive attention simultaneously, you can’t
hear if something important is happening in the meeting. Alternatively, you have to constantly switch between
tasks. It’s really taxing for the brain,” Nurmi says.
第 3 页 共 10 页
21. How does Niina Nurmi feel about the result of the research
A. Confused. B. Confident C. Surprised. D. Optimistic.
22. What does the underlined word “shadowed” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Observed. B. Interviewed. C. Employed. D. Analyzed.
23. What can be learned from the last two paragraphs
A. Limited sensory input increases stimulation.
B. Turning off cameras boosts task switching.
C. Automated tasks stimulate constant switches.
D. Too little stimulation can cause multitasking.
24. What is the text mainly about
A. How remote meetings differ from face-to-face ones.
B. Why cognitive attention in virtual meetings decreases.
C. What role a person’s personality plays in remote meetings.
D. Where the problem with the present meeting formats lies.

Scientists have found a way to decode (解码 ) a stream of words in the brain using MRI scans and
artificial intelligence. The system reconstructs the main point of what a person hears or imagines, rather than
trying to copy each word, a team reports. “It’s getting at the ideas behind the words, the meaning, says
Alexander Huth, an author of the study.
Previous efforts to decode language have relied on sensors placed directly on the surface of the brain. The
sensors detect signals in areas involved in expressing words. But the Texas team’s approach is an attempt to
“decode more freeform thought,” says Marcel Just, a professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University.
The new study came about as part of an effort to understand how the brain processes language. Researchers
had three people spend up to 16 hours each in a functional MRI scanner, which detects signs of activity across
the brain. Participants wore headphones that streamed audio from the Internet. Those streams of words
produced activity all over the brain, not just in areas associated with speech and language. After participants
listened to hours of stories in the scanner, the MRI data was sent to a computer. It learned to match specific
patterns of brain activity with certain streams of words. Then came a paraphrased version of what a participant
heard.
The MRI approach is currently slower and less accurate than an experimental communication system being
developed for paralyzed people, where people get a sheet of electrical sensors implanted directly on the surface
of the brain. With an MRI-based system, no one has to get surgery.
But future versions of MRI scans could raise moral questions. “What if you can read out the word that
somebody is just thinking in their head That’s potentially a harmful thing.” Huth says. This technology can’t
really read minds uncontrollably, though. It only works when a participant is actively cooperating with scientists.
Still, systems that decode language could someday support people who are unable to speak because of a brain
injury or disease. They are also assisting scientists in understanding how the brain processes words and
thoughts.

Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way. The ideals for most
philosophical writing are precision, clarity, and the sort of conceptual analysis that leaves no hair unsplit.
There is nothing wrong with clarity, precision, and the like — but this isn’t the only way to do philosophy.
Outside academic journals, abstract philosophical ideas are often expressed through literature, cinema, and song.
There’s nothing that grabs attention like a good story, and there are some great philosophical stories that delight
and engage, rather than putting the reader to sleep.
One of the great things about this is that, unlike formal philosophy, which tries to be very clear, stories
don’t wear their meanings on their sleeve — they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for
the reader to wrestle with.
Consider what philosophers call the metaphysics (形而上学) of race — an area of philosophy that explores
the question of whether or not race is real. There are three main positions that you can take on these questions.
You might think that a person’s race is written in their genes (a position known as “biological realism”). Or you
might think of race as socially real, like days of the week or currencies (“social constructionism”). Finally, you
might think that races are unreal — that they’re more like leprechauns (一种魔法精灵 ) than they are like
Thursdays or dollars (“anti-realism”).
A great example of a story with social constructionist taking on race is George Schuyler’s novel Black No
More. In the book, a Black scientist named Crookman invents a procedure that makes Black people visually
indistinguishable from Whites. Thousands of African Americans flock to Crookman’s Black No More clinics
and pay him their hard-earned cash to undergo the procedure. White racists can no longer distinguish those
people who are “really” White from those who merely appear to be White. In a final episode, Crookman
discovers that new Whites are actually a whiter shade of pale than those who were born that way, which kicks
off a trend of sunbathing to darken one’s skin-darkening it so as to look more White.
Philosophically rich stories like this bring more technical works to life. They are stories to think with.

第二节 七选五(共 5小题:每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Once a year in a small mountain village, the Mande people gather to hear the folk stories of their traditions.
The man playing an instrument called Sosso-Bala while singing is the storyteller. He holds all the folk
knowledge of the Mande people.
Most of us don’t have a musical instrument that ties us together, but we have someone in our lives who’s
the keeper of our folk knowledge. Often it’s a grandmother, who keeps all our stories of wisdom ready to tell
upon request. 33 What’s the best way to get a baby to sleep Where do I come from What’s my
moral compass The stories provide an answer, and it’s useful to speak with someone who knows how things
are done.
34 Researchers have documented folk knowledge in other species—whales returning to parts
of the sea that they’d abandoned a generation before; monkeys that communicate hunting skills to their
offspring (后代). Folk knowledge is not only culture, it’s also survival. 35
Traditionally, we share it in small units—families sharing around a dinner table. 36 Look at
any social media, and you’ll see folk knowledge at work and at play. It’s exploded as we’re trained to look for
information online, rather than from within. In this case, chances are that our questions can be answered with
misinformation.
But we don’t gather once a year to reality check our “folk stories” as the Mande people do; nor do we
center our folk traditions around a musical instrument. The internet has no reality except its own and, left
unchecked, its wisdom has no rhythm. 37
第 6 页 共 10 页
A. It’s just chaos.
B. This is why we do it.
C. Human wisdom has been passed down through generations.
D. The stories can be useful for dealing with all sorts of doubts.
E. Nowadays, folk knowledge has expanded to digital networks.
F. Now the internet has made valuable folk wisdom at your fingertips.
G. Recently, we discovered that this very human practice isn’t limited to humans.

In an age of rapidly growing urbanization, rooftop farming has emerged as a sustainable response 53
the challenge of creating green space in cities. This innovative practice transforms rooftops into mini farms,
where vegetables, fruits, and even flowers 54 (plant), providing local residents with fresh produce and
adding a touch of nature to urban environments.
Rooftop farming, also 55 (refer) to as vertical agriculture, is more than just a trend; it’s a step
towards environmental conservation. Green roofs with vegetation help to absorb sunlight and release moisture,
cooling the air and reducing the demand for air conditioning, 56 in turn lessens energy 57
(consume) and carbon emission. Meanwhile, rooftop farms serve as educational platforms, 58 (teach)
city dwellers about sustainable agriculture practices and the importance of locally 59 (source)food.
As urban populations continue to grow, rooftop farming fosters community engagement 60
promotes healthier lifestyles by providing access to fresh and organic produce. When we look towards 61
future where environmental consciousness and sustainable practices become increasingly vital, rooftop farming
stands as a testament to our ability to cultivate more than just food—we cultivate hope for a 62 (green)

Kevin woke to the blaring beep of his alarm clock. “Can’t wait for that camping trip,” Kevin thought, filled
with excitement. As he was leaving home, his dad grabbed him by the hand and said, “Before you go, just tell
me the directions on where you and your friends are going to stay.”
“But dad!” Kevin complained.
“No buts!” Kevin’s dad added.
“Fine.” Kevin told him the directions and left.
The three friends, Kevin, Jay and Nathan, had been planning this adventure for weeks, packing their stuff
—tents, snacks, and a map—preparing for a 3-day outdoor exploration. Excitement ran through Kevin as they
departed for their campsite. “This trip is going to be awesome,” Nathan excitedly yelled as they set off. But
little did they know that nature had a surprise in store for them.
The first day at the campsite was going great, setting up tents, collecting firewood, and sharing stories.
“Man, we nailed these tents,” Kevin said. “I know it was easy really,” Nathan replied. The friends were happy.
Yet towards night, as the dark clouds gathered overhead, the atmosphere shifted, and a sudden storm
erupted with unforgiving anger. Rain poured down from the heavens like a relentless waterfall, transforming the
peaceful campsite into a muddy battleground. Worse still, a huge tree was uprooted and crashed down with a
deafening crack on their only means of escape— their car. Kevin’s eyes widened in horror as he spotted the
damaged wreckage beneath the fallen giant. “Our car!” he screamed over the howling wind, his voice a mix of

disbelief and despair. “We’re stuck here,” he declared, his words barely audible against the backdrop of thunder
and raindrops. They realized that their plans had been violently spoiled by forces beyond their control. The once
quiet campsite now stood as a deserted battlefield, the fallen tree serving as a painful reminder of the
unpredictable nature of the world around them.
