Recently my friend invited me to her residential hall, which is an African-American themed hall. They have lots of meetings and outings there. So I thought it would be fun. On this particular day they were having a pancake breakfast, just a time to mix. I was excited to be there, too.
I walked in at a time when the mini-party was at its peak. I found my friend; excitedly, we hugged and she led me to a seat in the back. We sat there for some time. I sensed some sort of discrimination. I wondered, were we just isolating ourselves or were we facing discrimination
My friend’s breakfast came in first, and it was a plate full of colors. My mouth watered. I have always liked rainbow dishes: they make me hungry. She let me pick pancakes and fruit; we ate and only then began to talk.
The black American contemporary music was extremely loud. Some boys and girls were beating the tables
and some guys on the stage were dancing in what looked like a kind of competition.
We talked about various subjects: hair, boys, shoes and books. And then we got to it. “What do African Americans think of Africans ”
We argued. I told her I thought African Americans were haughty. Why did they sideline us When we met in a narrow passage and our eyes met, they quickly looked aside before we greeted. Why Weren’t we all black I mean, wasn’t this exactly the reason why there was an African-American themed house to begin with
Did they look down upon us because they grew up in America and we in Sub-Saharan Africa Oh yes, I felt this was it! They believed that we were HIV-positive and that the giraffes were right behind our huts.
My friend uttered, “No!” And then she continued:
“I also thought so at one point but after living with these guys, I got to a different conclusion altogether. These guys are not from Africa. They were not born there and may have never been there. We can’t expect them to naturally like us or bond. We are different. Skin color is the skin color.”

Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send orders to machines.
Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, showed a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts.
In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the wheelchair and guided it with his thoughts.
“Our brain has billions of nerve cells (神经细胞). These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓) to the muscles (肌肉) to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles.” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with outside world and also to control the machine.”
The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp (头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer understands the signals and directs the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that recognize objects in its path. They help the computer react to orders from the brain.
Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer, software that understands brain signals and turns them into simple orders. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be divided into two kinds: communication, and controlling the machine. One example is this wheelchair.”
He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to ensure that they can use the technology over long periods of time.
46.BCI is a technology that can ________.
A.help to update computer systems
B.link the human brain with computers
C.help the disabled to become well
D.control a person’s thoughts

A.scalp→computer→cap→wheelchair
B.compute→cap→scalp→wheelchair
C.scalp→cap→computer→wheelchair
D.cap→computer→scalp→wheelchair
49.The team will test with real patients to ________.
A.make profits from them B.prove the technology useful to them
C.make them live longer D.learn about their physical condition
50.Which of the following would be the best title for the text ________
A.Switzerland, the BCI Research Center
B.New Findings About How the Human Brain Works
C.BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled
D.Computer Technology Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries

Improving memory is important to success in studying. But is there anything that we can do about it One solution might be walking backwards.
According to a new study published in the Journal of Cognition, walking backwards, whether doing it really or just imagining it can improve the brainpower in the short term. In the study, 114 volunteers were asked to watch a video in which a woman had her bag stolen. Then they answered 20 questions about the information shown in the video. Ten minutes after watching the video, the volunteers were divided into three groups. The first two groups were told to move forwards or backwards 10 meters while the third group was asked to stay still on the same point. The researchers found that the backwards walking group got two more correct answers on average than the other two groups. This suggests that a relationship between the concepts of time and space is important to the way our minds form memories,
When we walk backwards, everything we learn becomes strange to us. “This forces the brain to think in a different way,” US scientist Christine Weber told Forbes. It almost always means that our brain needs to be more active in the limited time. Naturally, our short-term memory will be improved greatly.
Besides improving our memory, walking backwards also plays an important role in physical health, especially fitness. Another study found that walking backwards puts less strain (压力) and requires a smaller range of movements from the knee joints (膝关节). Thus, there’s less pressure and pain in the knees.
In addition, walking backwards, compared to walking forwards, is more challenging. It requires you to use muscles and movements that you probably seldom use, making it a prefect way to change your exercise routine for greater fitness gains. Meanwhile, by making people put in extra effort, it naturally bums more fat and calories.
51.Which group of people performed best in the memory test
A.The staying sill group. B.The forward-walking group.
C.The imaginary-walking group. D.The backward walking group.
52.What do we know about backwards walking
A.It limits our thinking time.
B.It follows our exercise routine.
C.It can increase the activities of our brain.

53.What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 3
A.To add another point of the topic. B.To explain the result of the research.
C.To present the main idea of the passage. D.To provide some background information.
54.In what way does walking backwards improve people’s health
A.It can make people 8 joints stronger. B.It can make people more energetic.
C.It can keep people in good shape. D.It can reduce people’s stress.
55.Where does the passage probably come from
A.A news review. B.A health magazine.
C.A science textbook. D.An educational report.
第二部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
While other teenagers might be busy taking care of their personal pages online or playing games for hours, 14-year-old Jackson Oswalt from Memphis has been busy doing something different. He has spent his free time building his own nuclear reactor (核反应堆) in his home. Now, the boy is praised by city leaders for his achievement as he is the youngest person to have achieved nuclear fusion (核聚变).
At just 12 years old, Jackson chose to spend his time exploring his interest in nuclear physics. After scouring the Internet, the student learned of the story of Taylor Wilson, an Arkansas boy who won recognition in the field of science as the youngest person to achieve nuclear fusion in 2008 at the age of 14. Jackson was greatly inspired by him.
The process of the nuclear experiment is not easy at all. But Jackson thought if Wilson could do it, then he could, too. Maybe he could even break Wilson’s record in the process. The boy started his project by turning his playroom into a laboratory. Then he bought different kinds of things to build own nuclear fusion reactor.
“The beginning of the scientific research was just learning about what other people had done with their fusion reactors,” Jackson said. His parents spent nearly $8,000 to $10,000 supporting his nuclear experiment.
“With the money, I searched for and bought the parts that I needed. Often the parts I found were not exactly what I wanted, so I had to make improvements to them.”
Jackson’s hard work finally paid off. Hours before his 13th birthday, he made history as the youngest person to achieve nuclear fusion in January last year. Months after the project, Jackson continued to test his fusion reactor to further prove his project. On Tuesday, Memphis City leaders officially praised Jackson’s achievements with a resolution.
